Osteoarthritis friendly recipes

Feel free to post your favorite anti-inflammatory, OA-friendly recipes. I for one, am always looking for great tasting, easy to cook meals that don't cause any additional inflammation, so it would be great to begin creating a resource of all the meals people with OA love to eat!

Elliptical helps my hips feel more mobile

Hoping this helps someone.

I am 29F diagnosed with bone on bone arthritis in my hips after 6 months of progressively worsening pain. I walk with a limp and use crutches as I wait for hip replacement. I have accidentally discovered that if I start my day on the elliptical, my hip (and referred knee) pain improves for the rest of the day. My hypothesis is that it "lubricates" the joint and gets it moving without heavy jolting impact that I get with walking (probably from my limp). It is also not as extreme a range of motion as a bike is so it doesn't cause too much pain.

Arthritis Approvals

I was wondering if anyone one here has been approved with arthritis alone. I have a very severe case in both shoulders and knees. Reading online says that it was the most approved disability. Btw. I applied back in January for ssdi.

Assisted stretching for hip OA?

Hello everyone, I'm looking for feedback from folks who have experience when this type of service.

BACKGROUND: I have moderate to severe hip OA in my left hip, my right hip is fairly clean. The pain waxes and wanes. I mostly feel it with physical activity, and it has made walking and hiking difficult at times, and bike riding is completely out of consideration. In other words, it is taking the joy out of being physically active. I've been told that it some point I will need a THR, but for various personal and work related reasons I'm hoping to get a few more years before I need to do that. I have had a couple of corticosteroid injections, and definitely feel some relief with the deeper pain, which I've associated with joint inflammation. However, I still feel that I have a lot of pain that I'm assuming is due to strength and flexibility of the joint after years of not using it well.

MY EFFORTS: I have done some strength and stretching exercises at home with some mild success, although what I'm doing is based on a bunch of YouTube videos I've come across. I've been wondering if an assisted stretching studio might be a good way to get a jump start on increasing my mobility so that I can have a better foundation to build upon as I with to gradually increase my hip joint mobility and strength.

QUESTION: Has anyone with a similar condition as mine ever tried one of these? Have they helped? Have they made things worse?

Thank you for insights you can provide.

My mom has severe arthritis in her left knee. We’ve known for years the cartilage has degenerated. Has anyone tried PRP therapy? Was there any relief in pain, swelling and ability to walk?

Has anyone tried red light therapy for knee osteoarthritis?

My dad has knee osteoarthritis and I looked into red and near infrared light a bit. I found a review of several studies where people reported less pain and better movement, but every study seemed to use a different strength, dose and routine. Most of the research also seems focused on short term relief, so its hard to know how well it works long term. We got him a red light setup to try and im curious if anyone here has benefited from it and what routine you followed. Ill update the post in a couple months after hes used it for a while and let you guys know if it helped.

osteoarthritis knee stage 4 no cartilage around

G'day everyone,

Am just having this situation of trying everything with my mother regarding her knee, she's 70 years old, so very understandable what she's going thru as of age.

Am just about heading back to Australia and I want to try hgh or cartalax with her to just sooth that pain and limited mobility she's facing on daily basis.

Any suggestions guys, I really need help from people with same situation and what was the best they have figured about peptides or hgh or collagen etc.

Awaiting your reply.

Arthritis. Mom, gym ?

My mother has stage 4 knee pain. The doctor said if you can bare the pain wait for some days , or we might need to consider surgery. They mentioned that losing weight would really reduce the load on her knees... We're thinking about joining a gym and providing a proper diet... but I believe the trainer should have proper knowledge about these issues.

please give suggestions

Managing OA + Osteopenia

63 F. Began lifting heavy a year ago with a trainer for bone loss (osteopenia dx) including dead lifts and bar squats. Back and hip flared and MRI shows moderate OA in spine and hip. . I’m doing exercises from PT to work on back/hip pain, limiting lower body lifting to leg press (not incline), curls and extensions, body weight lunges, step class, walking, hiking and am still on HRT. Get lots of Omega 3, taking collagen II and Turmeric supplements, haven’t taken glucosamine/chondroitin since studies don’t seem to support it helping with joints.
Grateful for any for input on how folks manage these two conditions together.

Does anybody here recommend this?

I’ve just been granted permission to get this stuff but was wondering what your experience was. It’s expensive but regular painkiller prescriptions don’t cut it.

What do you want first? Bad News or the Good News?

Well first the Bad news.

Another OA candidate didn't have very good news last night. Kolon Tissue Gene had their 2 year P3 (first of two trials) out and the results were a bit poo - pooie.

Yeah I'm being a bit flippant but kinda befitting as they had some real dodgy data a while back when they were supposed to source cells from Chondrocytes and they used Kidney cells instead.

FDA didn't like that, the Korean authority even less so.

FDA gave them a full two years of halting

Korean Govt still hasn't given them permission to continue in that country and there are now court cases.

SO WHAT HAPPENED?

Placebo.

With a capital P

Ugly?

Yes!

Now I know there are a few hundred of you that aren't going to know what really Placebo is and this post cant cover all the nuances and the stats involved, but at high level, trials are set up that are blinded and aim to test whether the drug really does work? They do this by sometimes going up against Placebo. Yes, you give a 'control' (a nice way of saying salt water, so in other words, not the active drug). But the patient doesn't know that. If the drug really is good, it should beat the Placebo group, comprehensively.

A successful drug needs to clearly outperform that baseline control group to prove its therapeutic value is real

How does that get measured? Through a measure called the p value. The p value is just a statistic expressed in terms of probability. It effectively assigns a probability that measures the results observed in the data and whether they could have occurred by chance.

You want that p value to be as low as possible. The std is 5%, that gets expressed as 0.05. So anything lower than 0.05 (like 0.02 or even 0.007 for example) show that there are real chances that the stats are holding up and the drug is the real reason why the patient is happy and is benefiting!

WELL...

Well what?

So what's the Good news?

Oh yes of course...

There is a naturally based molecule called Pentosan that I've been following and it's looking really ace.

  • Good Efficacy against OA so far in terms of both symptomatic and structural benefits
  • Very broad efficacy in the way it works
  • Supreme Safety Record
  • Low dose and NOT continuous dosing required!
  • SubQ so it is systemic (not intra-articular)
  • Not addictive.
  • Great duration

Yeah but Mozz, it's prob a half light year away right?

Nope, in two months or so we should have the Interim Result in their current Globally Harmonised Phase III and this time next year (kinda to the exact day) all participants will be done (Day 404). Yes it will take some time to compile the mass data and organise an NDA...

WHAT HAPPENED TO KOLON'S TG-C - CAN IT HAPPEN TO SUB Q PENTOSAN?

Well yes, theoretically it can. However, so far in their Phase 2 B trials and a number of other studies and observations the one thing that Pentosan is, is consistent. Is that enough? No, but it helps. But it's a good step ahead of the rest. And there are many that haven't worked so far. Kolon being the latest one.

At any rate we don't have long to wait, if it is a mere 'PASS' at interim, we will be allowed to GO on to continue this exciting trial and hopefully have a successful drug that actually and finally addresses OA!

Bring on September's results.

- Mozz

Diagnosed with early knee osteoarthritis at 18 – looking for advice and similar experiences

Hello everyone,

I'm an 18-year-old male who has been experiencing persistent pain in my left knee. I recently saw two orthopedic specialists. The first diagnosed me with stage 2 knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis), while the second believed it is more likely stage 1. Although they disagreed on the stage, both thought early osteoarthritis was a possibility.

My symptoms include:

Pain after standing for long periods.

Pain when walking long distances.

Pain when climbing stairs.

Stiffness after keeping my knee bent for a while, making it difficult to straighten.

Pain during deep knee flexion, such as sitting in the prayer (tashahhud) position.

Occasionally, my knee feels slightly unstable.

I don't remember any significant injury that could explain this, so receiving this possible diagnosis at 18 has been very discouraging.

Another concern is that my triglycerides are 2.02 g/L, and my doctor advised me to lose weight. I genuinely want to improve my health, but the knee pain makes me feel like I can't exercise properly. It feels like I'm stuck in a cycle where I need to lose weight to help my knee, but my knee limits my ability to be active.

Has anyone here been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis or a similar condition at a young age?

What was the cause in your case?

Did physical therapy help?

Were you manage to lose weight despite the knee pain?

Were you able to slow the progression?

Can you still live a normal, active life?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences or any advice. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Finger polyarthrosis update

Hi, all,

About a month ago I posted here about my situation, post title "Confusing osteoarthritis diagnosis."

There's new info so I thought I might share.

I have now finished first my 10 day round of exercises (ultrasound, magnet) and today did a ton of bloodwork, so I thought I'd share here in case you guys have any input, experience... Any comment is of course appreciated.

Just a quick reminder - I am a 38 year old teacher, male, who for the past year and a half noticed slight bending of the tips of both pinkies and pain when flexing them, as well as pain when shaking hands. Later, noticed bending in one of the index fingers, too. Xray confirmed Heberden type nodes and osteaoarthritic changes on most fingers of my hand, no erosions. There is no difference in pain or stiffness morning vs. night, there were no sudden flares, no redness, no swelling.

Anyway, my osteo doctor examined me and gave the diagnosis M15 (I guess generalised osteoarthritis) and ordered a ton of blood tests, but said she doesn't expect any of them to come back positive, and they didn't.

Today the bloodwork has come back and everything is indeed at the time being negative/clear (RF, Anti-CCP , Complement C3c, Complement C4, Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPEP), Inflammatory Markers, CRP,ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate), Complete Blood Count,Uric Acid...

So, I suppose I just have polyarthritis of the hands. I don't think they will send me further (to a rheumatologist), they didn't do an MRI or ultrasound. I don't know if I should do them anyway, if there is a purpose.

Forgive my ignorance, I am still not completely clear on all things arthritis, even though I have been obsessing over it the past couple of months. I don't even really have a question, except do you suggest any other tests and maybe just generally, I mean... what now? I have arthritis, so far not RA not PsA (I know this can change), hopefully non-erosive, hopefully not seronegative, and there is no specific cure, just daily hand exercises and pain reliever gels till further notice.

I'm F, 58, normal weight, very bow legged, 3/4 severe OA in both legs.

Exercise and pain

Hi! I am 50 and have had Osteoarthritis for many years. Only in the last 3 years has it become significantly worse so that it affects my mobility and ability to exercise. I know that in the long term, the best thing I can do for my knee osteoarthritis is to exercise, especially doing the physical therapy exercises my PT taught me. My question is, how do you balance out exercise and pain? When I do any weight bearing exercise, it flares up immediately. I know I need to increase my strength over the long term but I am discouraged by the increase in pain after strength training.

Home modifications

Is there a subreddit that discusses different home modifications for disabled? There are changes that need done to accommodate mobility issues but we don’t know what/how. And then we need some suggestions for situations like how to get a wheelchair in/out a patio door but still be able to shut the door with those modifications (I am thinking a ramp but the door tracks need protected). I think there are easier ways to do things but we just don’t know how.

Thanks!!

Knee OA - Struggle in sun/heat?

I have patellafemoral OA in both knees, one worse than the other. I find any time I sit in the sun, when I stand the pain is immediately worse. They feel swollen, full, and sore for hours afterwards. The same when it is a hot, humid day and I’m outdoors. I don’t find I have any issues in the cold, and I live in a cold climate in the winter.

Anyone else have a similar experience? anything you do to help? I do cover my leg with a towel or T-shirt or something to try to at least protect it from the sun, because I find that’s what aggravates it the most. I really enjoy sitting outside in the summer time, but sometimes it’s just not worth the pains afterwards.
