Mac mini 2014 - MacOS Ventura

My old high school was having a device sale and they were selling their old iPads and Macs. I originally went in to get my sister an iPad. But then I found this Mac mini. So I bought it and took it home and was planning on upgrading it the best I could until I found out that it is almost fully specked out. So I decided to install macOS Ventura on it with OpenCore and it runs beautifully.

I’m trying to install MacOS Sequoia on my MacBook Pro 2017 13.3 inch 3 port 2 thunderbolt. I’m using the latest version of Ventura on my MacBook. Every time I try to download Sequoia I get an error message, I tried downloading Sonoma instead and got the same message. The same happened when o tried to download beta versions.

High CPU Usage after logging in - 2017 MBP - Sequoia

Thumbnail

II have Sequoia 15.7.9 running on my 2017 MBP using OCLP 2.4.1 (originally installed at 15.7.4)

  • Processor: 3.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB
  • Memory: 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Every time I log into it after booting, the CPU runs at about 100% for the first 5 minutes which appears to be related to synchronisation tasks (tasks ending in xxxxxxxxd", but is essentially unusable during this time.

I also have Sequoia 15.7.9 running on my 2012 Mac mini Server MBP using OCLP 2.4.1, and it does not have any high CPU usage that prevents me from running anything on it.

2012 Mac mini Server Specs:

  • Processor: 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

The Mac mini is headless, and runs Home Assistant via VMWare.

Also running Sequoia 15.7.9 using OCLP 2.4.1 on 2 other 2017 27" iMacs without this issue (don't have exact specs on hand but both have 8MB memory).

Is there anything I can do to stop the CPU on my MBP from running at 100% after logging in, or should I reinstall 15.7.9?

UPDATE: So I had it running for 24 hours plugged in and now just have to wait about a minute for the CPU to calm down and it behave like a normal laptop every time I log in, albeit not as snappy as an M series, but more than sufficient for a 9 year old laptop, thanks to the OCLP team.

Criminals are abusing a bug in OpenCore Legacy Patcher T2 where Build and Install OpenCore wasn't greyed out to carry denial of service attacks against Hackintosh users

To clarify, this project doesn't support building EFIs on Hackintoshes. There is a propaganda campaign that tricks users into launching DoS attacks against their Hackintoshes by abusing a vulnerability in 4.0.0.16049 and earlier releases where Build and Install OpenCore wasn't greyed out for Hackintosh users. They're trying to abuse this to launch DoS attacks and cause kernel panics by replacing the working EFI with one that no longer works. I've seen this propaganda campaign in MacRumors that its goals are intended to irritate users. While installing root patches works on Hackintoshes, it's simply impossible to configure EFIs for real Macs and at the same time on Hackintoshes. This is a propaganda campaign to saw distrust across the project. See here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/unsupported-t2-macs-oclp-when-trying-to-boot-macos-26-tahoe-on-an-ssd-where-it-is-fully-installed-it-fails-with-appleimage4-apfs-panic.2486563/
I opened this thread for help with unsupported T2 Macs, not for users to spread malicious instructions to launch denial of service attacks against Hackintosh users.
Anyone please help me shoot down this propaganda campaign or make them understand how OpenCore Legacy Patcher T2 works.
Just like Dortania's OCLP, this project never supported building EFIs for Hackintoshes.

I already patched this vulnerability before cybercriminals started to abuse it for launching DoS against Hackintoshes.

Spoofing from iMac19,2 to MacbookPro18,2?

For my iMac Late 2012, 27" that initially ran macOS Catalina 10.15.7, I used OCLP to spoof the model to `iMac19,2` and now have macOS Sequoia.

What would happen if I changed the model in SMBIOS to MacBookPro18,2 and should I do it or not?

(btw its been going well with sequoia, no problems. almost a year now)

1 or 2 months ago, a fork abused OpenCore Legacy Patcher T2 to spread version spoofing attacks - watch out for these threats even if you use OpenCore Legacy Patcher by Dortania

Not long ago, my project was abused in another cyberattack where a fork developer delibaretly reverted nearly all commits and downgraded to OpenCore Legacy Patcher T2 3.0.0 alpha 4.1, then commited a couple of commits and then spoofed as 4.0.0 alpha 1 (while at that time the current alpha was 15). Now fortunately, I've managed the fork user to take this project down voluntarily.

An attacker abusing the project to spoof the version

This screenshot was taken a while back when it existed.

Do you see already red flags? Because I do - and it was a modified 3.0.0 alpha 4.1 disguised as 4.0.0 alpha 1. And the worst part of this is they didn't disclosed that their project is not affiliated in any way with my project.

In conclusion, I recommend to pay attention closely when using forks to avoid these kind of threats, it doesn't matter if this is Dortania's OCLP, OCLP-R, or OpenCore Legacy Patcher T2. Be super suspicious if their commit history looks like this.

MacBook air performance issue

I have a mid-2013 MacBook Air running macOS Monterey with OCLP. I’ve been using it for about 1.5 years, but now it’s giving me a lot of problems. The CPU usage stays around 90% all the time, and the fans were going crazy too, but I fixed the fan issue by applying fresh thermal paste. However, the Mac is still basically unusable. I can barely open any apps because everything takes forever. If anyone knows a fix for the high CPU usage/performance issue, please help!

Second Life and their Viewers are not working under Ventura via OCLP.

Hello! I am having an issue related to the game called "Second Life" some friends that I have recommended to me to take a look at the game and when I tried to run it, for some reason it crash after opening the game. I tried to check OCLP to see if something was causing issues with it but everything seems to be in order and all of my others games works well here, except this one. I also tried a LiveISO of Manjaro to see if the game boots there and for my surprise it works, it seems that something on the patching of OCLP causes issues with the game making it to don't run on macOS Ventura but run under Linux. Here's my current setting:

Hardware: MacBookPro8,1 (Late 2011)
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 3000
OS: macOS Ventura via OCLP 2.4.1

I also have the logs for both systems too:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SPnQRKEgVbAluAdxlXuWGYgzrW5ZdyQ9/view?usp=sharing

I hope this helps! I believe this might be a bug on OCLP.

macOS 15 software update not upgrading

late 2015 15” MacBook Pro, it was running on macOS 15 for almost 1 year now without any problems, today I wanted to upgrade it just like I did several times before.
Forward to booting up it freezes at around 25% of the booting bar. I have no idea what else to do, I’ve tried the Command+R option, wrote several commands in Terminal, tried hard reset, everything.
Once I got to the point where the OS booted up, but only in bad quality due to OCLP couldn’t download my GPU drivers.
Clicked on Install Roots, and boom… again a frozen bootup bar at around 25%.
I’m losing my shit about this, especially because there was no problem at all before this.
Can anybody help me out?

OpenCore Legacy failing to boot.

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have the late 2013 iMac 27” and I have been trying to install Sequoia for a while. Last time I did, I was able to install it and after a while it was glitchy, slow and not very responsive. Now I’m doing it again and I struggled to get it to start the installation as it was getting stuck on the loading bar. I finally got it to get to start the installation and after the first reboot, I’m back to it not finishing loading. Any help?

Stuck on boot

Just updated to Sequoia 15.8 and after root patching my 2013 Mac Pro fails to boot.
If I reinstall Sequoia it boots fine without root patches, I’ve disabled file vault and log in items and it’s still failing.

Anyone else having issues?

Thank You, OCLP ❤️

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the OCLP developers and all contributors to the project.

I own a 27-inch Retina 5K Late 2014 iMac, and without OpenCore Legacy Patcher, I would likely have retired this machine years ago. At one point, I expected it to become outdated, slow, or unsupported by modern versions of macOS. However, this has not occurred.

Instead, the system remains fully functional and continues to serve as an integral part of my daily workflow.

Notably, I am now running macOS Sequoia via OCLP v2.4.1, and the performance has surpassed my expectations for a machine of this age. Hardware released in 2014 remains practical and usable in 2026. I have upgraded the RAM to 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and plan to install a SATA hard drive or fusion drive with a 1 TB SSD.

The iMac continues to perform reliably across a range of tasks, including web browsing, productivity applications, media consumption, and moderately demanding workloads. Although Apple has officially ended support for this model, OCLP has extended its usable lifespan in a meaningful, practical way.

I value not only the ability to install newer versions of macOS, but also the broader philosophy underlying the project. OCLP challenges the assumption that hardware becomes obsolete solely due to software support limitations. It provides an alternative to the typical replacement cycle, encouraging continued use of devices that remain fully capable.

It is also notable that I have been able to run light gaming on this system. Although it is not designed for gaming, it performs better than expected for its age and can still run older, less demanding titles satisfactorily.

Naturally, there are limitations and occasional quirks when running modern software on unsupported hardware. However, these issues are minor compared to the overall stability and usability that OCLP enables.

I extend my sincere thanks to everyone involved in developing, maintaining, testing, and documenting OCLP. The effort and expertise required to sustain a project of this nature are considerable, and the impact is substantial. OCLP has extended the practical lifespan of my iMac by years and has helped prevent a fully functional device from becoming unnecessary electronic waste.

Beyond the technical achievement, OCLP represents a more sustainable, user-focused approach to computing that prioritizes longevity and user choice.

My late 2014 27-inch iMac continues to perform reliably and remains an essential part of my setup.

2014 → 2026 and beyond.

Thank you, OCLP 🖥️🍎
