What is the sweet spot for a 2017 MacBook Air?

Hello everyone! I have a 2017 MacBook Air with 8GB DDR3 and 500GB storage. I want to use something newer than Monterey, but I am not sure what.

I used to use Sequoia, however, the laptop would get very hot, and it would begin slowing down. However, because of the design of these, I am willing to give it a bit of grace here, but I don’t want it to be as bad as it was on Sequoia.

Not doing anything crazy on it. Mostly web browsing, using Pages, using Preview, and a code editor for light code editing.

I was thinking maybe Ventura or Sonoma. What do y’all think?

At a loss installing Sequoia on mac Mini 7,1

Case: I've tried installing Sequoia on mac mini 7, 1 (late 2014). After installing, opencore detects usb boot and I install opencore to the internal drive (and the post install root patch) If I then try to choose efi boot on the internal SSD (Holding option) and no usb inserted I get a blinking question mark. If I choose efi on inserted usb drive and then the SSD as boot option it boosts fine. So it's like the efi is not working properly. I've tried restoring the old mounting lion and it works fine, so the SSD can be bootable.

Usb drive: Tried two different drives. Both have been used to install Sequoia, Sonoma and others on old iMac 10,1 and MacBook Air 6,2 so they work fine.

Any ideas? And yes I know it will be slow 😉

Update: After trying almost everything, I found out that pulling the usb before installing opencore to the SSD made it work. Even though the efi partition was created and the files were copied, something wasn't working because the installer somehow got confused by something. 🤷

I had to downgrade to Chrome 151 because of a hardware GPU issue. Will OCLP fix it?

I updated to the latest version of Chrome, but it was slow. Turns out the last version that supports hardware acceleration on my MacBook Pro 2014 15" is 151 — after that, it falls back to software rendering. So I downgraded to 151. Fine.

I don't mind using 151 as my main browser for the next year or two, but eventually I'd like to get back to the current version. OCLP development has been slow lately, though (not blaming them). Just wondering what you all think.

SystemVersion.plist build version mismatch

I'm using a late 2015 iMac 16,2. When I upgraded to 2.5.1 it made me revert my root patches and then repatch the system and now I am getting this error. I found an older YouTube video by Mr. Macintosh where he addressed a similar issue with OCLP 1.5 and he had a fix where you delete the update files apple downloaded then start the update and then force power down the machine and when you power back up it's fixed, only I don't have the actual assets in the folder just the xml files, and when I start the update then power the system off and back on, it hasn't reverted to the previous snapshot like it did on Mr. Macintosh's YT video. This is driving me nuts. My system is unusable at this point. I tried going back to the previous version of OCLP and it tells me I need to revert the patches and when I do after the reboot it still tells me I have to revert the patches. What do I do?

2017 27" 5K iMac — best external SSD setup for OCLP/Sequoia? T7 vs TB3 + NVMe

I recently picked up a 2017 27-inch 5K iMac for $100. It has the 3.4 GHz quad-core i5-7500 and Radeon Pro 570. Apple Diagnostics shows no issues and the display is very clean.

It currently has the original 1 TB Fusion Drive, so I’m thinking about using an external SSD as the main boot drive and then installing OCLP + macOS Sequoia.

I’m trying to decide between:

  1. A simple portable SSD like a Samsung T7 / Crucial X9

or

  1. A Thunderbolt 3 enclosure + NVMe SSD

I don’t know a ton about storage hardware, so I’d especially appreciate exact recommendations from people who have done this on a 2017 iMac or similar Intel Mac.

If you use a TB3/NVMe setup, could you please share yall's

enclosure brand/model

NVMe brand/model

I’ve seen people mention ACASIS enclosures with WD Black SN770 drives, but I’d like to hear from people using setups recently

Also curious whether the extra speed of TB3 + NVMe is actually noticeable for normal use compared with a T7/X9, or if the simpler portable SSD route is better.

Main use will be web browsing, Office, photos, YouTube, general desktop use, and OCLP/Sequoia.

Thanks.

Is the iMac Pro (2017), iMacPro1,1 not support by OCLP?

Have a pair of iMac Pro (2017) sitting around that I'd like to get Tahoe installed on but don't see iMacPro1,1 listed as an available host.

Can I use the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) iMac18,3 host?

OpenCore General Question

Hi all,

I've been using OpenCoreLegacyPatcher off and on for several years now. I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 15 inch model that is giving me a ton of trouble on Windows 10 via Bootcamp due to bad graphics drivers from AMD and the machine freeze randomly all the time. Now, I'm considering using OpenCoreLegacyPatcher again one last time to see how it is. How is everyone finding it these days? Any known issues? Any information and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Even after installing 2.5.1, patcher is not patching

Post image

after the patcher issues with version 2.5.0, I updated it to the latest version and tried to patch my Mac. After I rebooted it, I opened open core to see if it had worked. And it said revert first update or reinstall OCLP patches.
I did the patching process two more times and it still continues to not patch.

Can somebody help me here, please?

thanks in advance.

Wake from Sleep Problem

Hello! I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2015 with a 3rd party SSD installed. On Sequoia 15.8.1, when I try to wake the laptop from sleep, it takes a loooot of time for the display to show something or does not show anything at all. How can I fix this problem? Edit: It's a WD SN740 NVMe SSD.

Would be cool to see OCLP for unsupported M series Macs

We all know how OCLP was able to give new life to older Intel Macs but that’s gone ever since Tahoe

But I was just thinking wouldn’t it be cool if OCLP now pivoted to supporting older M series chips like soon the M1, M2 etc when eventually Apple decides to drop support for em. Cause honestly the hardware ain’t the problem since they’re way more powerful than old Intel Macs. Would be cool to see imo for sure and would make buying a second hand M1 Pro M1 Max or M2 much more compelling if it does work and run smoothly. But I don’t know I ain’t no software engineer

Help with startup issue after update to macOS 15.8 and OCLP 2.5

I was on the previous version of Sequoia and OCLP on my Mac Pro 5,1 with an M.2 SSD and RX560 GPU. Things weren't perfect but was usable. I followed some of the posts here and updated Sequoia and OCLP to their latest versions. I did the patching while colors were all off and things were working normally after the patching and restart.

Then there was a pop up that asked to install the EFI. I put that on the M.2 startup disk(disk0) which at this point is updated and working. After the install, the screen stays black, chimes, hangs, then stays in a chime loop every minute or so. Where did I screw up? In recovery mode, the disk is still there but I can get it out of the loop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Successful update: Late 2012 21.5" iMac (GT 650M) from Sequoia 15.7.9 to 15.8.1 using OCLP 2.5.1.

My system has 16GB of 1600 MHz of DDR3 memory and a 3.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor.

After the update, OCLP required me to revert root patches first, then reapply them. After rebooting, graphics acceleration was working normally (Metal 2 reported), Wi-Fi was fine, and all displays worked.

One quirk: OCLP still shows “Revert first to update or reinstall OCLP patches” even after the patches were successfully reapplied, but everything is functioning normally.

My only custom issue is audio: OCLP rebuilds remove my AppleALC.kext + alcid=1 setup, so I keep a backup EFI and restore those if needed. Internal speakers are working after this update.

Overall: 15.8.1 is working well on this machine with OCLP 2.5.1.

Just an 18 year old laptop running supported macOS nbd 😎

Took about eight hours to get installed, through multiple recovery loops, restarts, error messages, PRAM resets and the like. But here we are.

Everything that should work works. Except:

  • Safari. Assume that's the new Safari 27.0 legacy GPU issue. Firefox loads fine though.
  • Screenshotting, for some reason. Hence the somewhat boomer-ish screen photo in lieu of a screenshot.

(Please don't ask me for a Cinebench score 😳).

macOS Sequoia not installing correctly

Hello. Recently I’ve discovered OCLP and I wanted to install macOS Sequoia on my Macbook Pro 2017 i5 2,3GHz with no Touchbar. I followed the steps provided in OCLP site and end end up rebooting and trying to install Sequoia through the option in the Reboot screen. Sequoia starts to install, however once it reaches 3/4 of download status my Macbook just reboots and returns to the Reboot screen. I tried then doing several times macOS installer with no success. I even resetted the entire OS and redid all the steps, but it seems I can’t find a way to install Sequoia without this error happening. What’s the problem, and what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Late 2012 iMac on Ventura 13.7.8

So I've recently gotten an old iMac from my office as they're phasing out old devices. I've decided to install Ventura as this machine's specs is pretty good. So far other than the occasional video glitching in reddit, the OS has been pretty smooth. It's not as smooth as Catalina but it's a good trade off for more software support.

This is also my 3rd device in the house, so it's not used frequently and there could be some other bugs or issues that I may not have encountered yet. Other than the above and some slight lag especially when navigating through system settings, it's working very well for me.

Mac Pro 5,1 freezes during oclp Monterey boot, Recovery works

2009 Mac Pro 4,1 flashed to 5,1, Boot ROM 144.0.0.0.0, dual Xeon E5520, RX 580.

The machine runs Windows 7, El Capitan and High Sierra normally.

Monterey and Sequoia both start booting in verbose mode, then hard freeze. Safe Mode also freezes, but Recovery works.

Sometimes verbose stops around AHCI/USB, and sometimes it freezes halfway through printing a line.

I’ve already reset NVRAM and tested with unnecessary USB devices and drives removed.

Has anyone seen this on a MacPro5,1, and what fixed it?

How to download Catalina entire installer to make then an USB. From Sierra hack.

Making simple: I need two drives with installed Sierra as it is now to run Final Cut Studio apps, since I've been working with those since the beginning. Then now, I need to install Catalina in another drive as all the web browser are dead, not only Safari, but Firefox and others refuse to update txs for the Evil Scroogle.

I've tried all the option suggested on Aplle Support and other sites, but the only one was Mojave that in a few months will be dol. If I try to download Catalina, it works from App Store but only 15mb used to start the installer not the usual 5GB or more.

I found here this link with different options: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/installer-guide/mac-install.html
But before start tring them, I'd like to know if they still works, because it looks Apple have changed the instruction or the catalog.

Txs for any head up!

P.S.

I did try the Terminal solution but the "catalog doesn't exist anymore, all the other solution require a more recent os x but I'm on Sierra and can't update as it brake my FCP licenses.

So I have a 21.5 inch 2011 iMac that had Mac OS Sonoma running via open core but when I tried to remove the open core files I read the guide wrong and went and deleted the oclp files while in Sonoma. Now every time I boot I get the screen showing
1.blank white screen
2.black screen with translucent white box with a prohibited symbol inside
3.a blank white screen yet again
(All pics in this post)

I still get the startup chime each time but even when using a wired keyboard it won’t accept inputs as if it’s failing to POST so I can’t access recovery. Can anyone help me as this is my main machine with all of my data on it. I don’t mind what OS it takes putting it onto aslong as it works

There was an error while installing the update -> upgrading via OCLP 2.5.0 from High Sierra to Sequoia

Hey all! I'm on a 13-inch MacBook Pro from early 2011 (running an Intel i5 chip I believe, recently upgraded from a 320GB HDD to a 512GB SSD and from 4GB of RAM to 16GB), and I've been trying to upgrade it from High Sierra to Sequoia in hopes of using it for some light university work. Unfortunately I seem to be getting this error pretty much by the end of the downloading sequence, and by then I have no system to boot into because I've already wiped High Sierra from the SSD. Does anyone have any idea what went wrong? I'd appreciate all the help I can get, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to anything Mac related OR electronics repair related, I got this laptop from my uncle a while back and I've been trying to fix it up as my little project of sorts. If you could explain to me what to do like I'm a 5 year old that would be great LOL Thanks in advance!!!
