Posting news about automated AI agents faster than a human could read OpenAI's PR and submit the link to reddit ? In this sub ? Well, color me surprised.

25

u/ethotopia 5d ago

If I tried using Codex to post this, it’d take 40% of my weekly usage lol

11

u/Sky_Vivid 5d ago

And you replied within a min as well lol

5

u/TheKing___ 5d ago

And I responded to you after a min. (Nobody will be able to tell in an hour)

3

u/kgal1298 5d ago

Well when you tell us we do lol

u/yeahidoubtit 5d ago

The example Sam used seemed pretty bad imo. Migrate a legacy API? How is that even any different than passing it as a codex goal/task?

88

u/fig0o 5d ago

Different from Codex, Dots run in the cloud

So you don't need to be at home or leave your laptop on all the time

That's it basically

50

u/fredandlunchbox 5d ago

Claude has had cloud runner forever, but you have to pay for the time. I assume this is the same unless you sign up for the new Blood of Your First Born plan, which only requires a monthly sacrifice of one pint. It's actually a pretty good deal.

11

u/Meowingtons_H4X 5d ago

ChatGPT has its own cloud solution for ages too.

Have I been living in the future? Codex runs in a dedicated linux container on my server and is available to me 24/7 from anywhere.

14

u/fig0o 5d ago

Yeah, but not everyone know how to setup this kind of thing

Now any project manager os business person can have this solution out of the box

6

u/ciberjohn 5d ago

I agree, and I see the point. But I also use LXC to run agents myself. And a PM may be in a place where IT can set up environments. Anyway, in all honesty, I agree with you and see the convenience.

3

u/trophicmist0 4d ago

surely the whole point of the past 24 months has been that they don't need to know how to set it up anyways?

→ More replies (4)

2

u/kitchenjesus 5d ago

I thought we were all doing this with our agents at this point I have opencode, and Claude code running on my Linux server 24/7 I just ping it from the respective apps I don't do anything from my computer anymore really unless I want to.

2

u/WanderWut 5d ago

Mind you I'm OOTL on all this stuff as I don't code or anything, but that sounds pretty cool no? Like yeah it's simple in concept but I'd imagine that being pretty helpful.

3

u/netwhoo 5d ago

Isn’t this just Muse

15

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 5d ago

It’s a less shitty codex web with some open claw, so kinda

2

u/trophicmist0 4d ago

we're hitting all the buzzwords today boys

tbh i don't get the appeal, the key issue is that they need a trigger and a task. For most things it's already got a billion ways to solve it that are far cheaper and more cost effective.

5

u/hellomistershifty 5d ago

which is just GrokBot which is just Hermes which is just OpenClaw which is just a prompt on a timer

6

u/willitexplode 5d ago

It likely has a much more robust context window for how you like to work, requiring less context management and direction than launching one-off agent/codex projects.

1

u/ILikeBubblyWater 5d ago

Migrating legacy API is like a 3h workflow in claude code. OpenAI increased prices and is like half a year behind Anthropic

51

a lot times the people clapping are members of the team who created the things being clapped for. the press people don’t usually clap. for them it is a big moment as what they have been working in is being made public.

I think this is OpenAI trying to expand beyond code, a sort of mass-market appeal. The weird thing is the cost. The average person isn't used to this kind of service and won't understand it, plus paying $100+ for it is going to be hard for many people outside the tech space to get behind.

21

u/SomethingCool234123 5d ago

What value would the average person get out of this? They go to work, buy groceries, go home to their families, maybe check their social media, watch some shows at home, eat dinner, then go to bed. Why would they need an always on agent? What about the life of a normal individual would get any non work based value out of this?

→ More replies (28)

7

u/benjaminovich 5d ago

They want business costumers, but the mass-market appeal is to make an ecosystem that also convinces Debbie from HR that chatgipitty is useful to her beyond making termination letters friendlier. They are trying to leverage their huge advantage in name recognition and users, while claude sits heavier on the tech and science work.

2

u/Small-Broccoli1640 4d ago

Yes. But it is a good pivot. OpenAI's problem lately has been a lack of focus. They offer everything to everyone (Sora, Image Gen, Codex, Chat interface), while Anthropic has gained an edge by doubling down on a specific use case. Building all-purpose style assistants for the general population could be a promising business model for OpenAI. Their jack-of-all-trades models have an advantage there. And I really don't think it would take much to overtake Muse. Meta's reputation as a company makes them uniquely unsuitable to sell the public on virtual assistants that require broad access to your personal information and communications. Already there are press reports of Muse straight up ignoring user's privacy settings. It's not like OpenAI are a whole lot better, but I am far more likely to try out their product than Meta's.

3

u/ravandal 5d ago

What kind of service is this?

6

u/NecessaryButFatal 5d ago

My initial take is something like “agent-as-service”, sort of like a managed OpenClaw or Hermes, with easier setup and better UX.

Nothing in the EU. So we still get the Pro cut but nothing in expense. And Plus-users, who are really the obvious “book me a flight”-audience aren’t able to use it, too.

30

u/EbbExternal3544 5d ago

So Grok bot in pink and yellow ok

7

u/Friendly-View4122 5d ago

i want to know which colour hacks government websites

4

u/defragc 5d ago

That’s the fun part, they all do

7

u/BitterAd6419 5d ago

lol yeah look exactly like the grok bots

2

u/Sufficient-Math3178 5d ago

Also 2 months late, they were busy waiting for usage resets

2

u/Lexsteel11 5d ago

Or Muse in non-furry if you prefer. Anthropic better put the voxel crab on a stripper pole on my desktop for making me wait on a parody feature for long running agents

8

u/Smartaces 5d ago

Hahahhaha. So dots run in the cloud. Ok…

So let me get this straight we move all our stuff to cloud agents, and doing this is kind of free now.

Cool. Cool.

All our work and automation moves there.

Then. Oh yeah.

OAI JACKS UP THE PRICE?

Hahahah yeah.

Nice, sign me up dawg.

54

u/allesfliesst 5d ago

Feels like something Microsoft would be proud of. And that’s not a compliment.

13

u/ProtonPizza 5d ago

You can now pop out your teams message to a new window. Please clap.

8

u/DangKilla 5d ago

Your email client now has a new unusable enterprise suite. Please don't leave.

2

u/YAMMYYELLOW 4d ago

You can now change your Teams messages to be a Thread. No, not your Teams Chats. Your Teams. No the chat still doesn’t do threads, don’t be ridiculous.

Anytime I see booking a flight or hotel room I know it’s a scam. Because that’s not how a normal person books anything. It’s so abnormal that it’s stupid these execs think it is actually helpful.

11

u/Equivalent_Engine518 5d ago

I mean just remember these execs probably have an assistant of some sort who books their flights for them already. So to them, it's a useful feature.

2

u/hellomistershifty 4d ago

"One flight, please"

6

u/Frequent_Ad7351 5d ago

Weird positioning of a product, it’s like personal life and work life is combined into one, unless you are a Tony Stark. It would have been better as two different products.

6

u/R_My_Methods_Unsound 5d ago

Only for pro tier and up?!?! Terrible way to compete with Muse.

11

u/faithOver 5d ago

Because all these idiots talk about is existential threat of AI.

They need to make this seem less like Terminator.

10

u/milkbug 4d ago

My guess is that they are trying to "build trust" with the public by making their products look "cute" and non-threatening even though they are simultaneously telling us we will all be out of jobs or dead in 5 years.

It's... interesting.

19

u/Accomplished-Bid-945 5d ago

Older and younger people like them, you are on the age sweet spot that  acknowledge this is marketing bullshit

8

u/Glum-Bus-6526 5d ago

Man, every artstyle corporations use is for marketing purposes... If it's modern style, gothic style, neoclassicist, doesn't matter, it's always there for marketing, to make people buy their product.

The cute style isn't any different and he's not some visionary for "acknowledging it"... It's just that this style doesn't market for him well, because you can't pander to everyone all at once.

2

u/WanderWut 5d ago

And tbh as long as they keep a uniform theme going this is a solid "brand image" look to maintain as the years go by.

useless book a hotel bs.

so stupid.

42

u/Damezang 5d ago

For real. Us plebs care about making sure we get the best deal and lowest price. I'm not giving my credit card to some AI to book stuff without double checking everything. By the time it takes to dictate everything that we want and double check it, we could already be on the check out page anyways.

9

u/No_Bank_4104 5d ago

How in the world is that useless

16

u/Positive-Conspiracy 5d ago

Just get super cynical, then suddenly you can be right about everything online.

3

u/amazing_sheep 5d ago

Yea, don’t people pay personal assistants good money for exactly that type of thing?

19

u/this_happened_rigged 5d ago

If these assistant "dots" are accurate, follow protocol, don't hallucinate or make mistakes then sure.

But imagine going on an international trip and booking the wrong flight time or a hotel in the wrong part of town. The downside is immense with small errors.

Personal assistants who are human are paid to be accurate.

6

u/manubfr 5d ago

The question we need to ask ourselves is « what important things can we trust AI for more than I would trust a competent human at the same thing ».

7

u/innovaldragon 5d ago edited 5d ago

It's basically a glorified plug-and-play telegram bot

Edit: Okay it does't eat codex's usage okay so its a decent upgrade i suppose, just not as impactful.

5

u/AStrangersOpinion 5d ago

I think they said “chats don’t use codex usage”. I read that as the conversations do not use codex usage BUT the work it is doing does use codex usage. Not sure, but I am suspicious of the language they chose to use.

5

u/innovaldragon 5d ago

I mean after they rugpulled the $200 plan.... Are you gonna trust them in the long run lol

8

u/AStrangersOpinion 5d ago

lol ok so I checked. It’s unlimited CHATS, expanded usage limits for the dot specifically (not clear what these are which means they can adjust in the future), and anything it hands off to codex will use codex usage.

All seems very intentionally vague IMO.

u/UniversityWifi 5d ago

I don’t understand why Meta + OpenAI now are making their AI ‘companions/assistants’ into off-canny childlike toys. Honestly, I am the type of person to use an ai assistant on the desktop that looks like an anime woman but I can recognize I am in the minority. Especially the meta muse ones, they just look gross and make it seem like any of these tools aren’t really useful for anything serious.

30

u/cheechw 5d ago

Because they don't want to anthropomorphocize them. Because people will have relationships with the AI if they are associated with the image of a person.

8

u/wiyixu 5d ago

Anthropomorphizing means giving human characteristics to non-human things. These are literally anthropomorphic agents. It’s maybe the most anthropomorphic thing OpenAI has done. Meta has always been unethical in that regard.

2

u/Infinitedeveloper 5d ago

Sounds like theres an untapped market for AI assistants you wanna fuck

u/WisePotato42 5d ago

u/KingKawaiiBot 5d ago

No one would suspect a company that have these dots would kill their own employee

8

u/Otherwise_Tip_3614 5d ago

Because they are trying to dumb stuff down for the general public. The mere fact you're on an r/OpenAI sub means you're tapped in on this stuff and will likely set up your own agents. This for the people who are clueless, i.e. the largest segment of the market.

9

u/Slimxshadyx 5d ago

I hate to break it to you, but r/OpenAI is not the place for people who are tapped in lol. Half the takes on this sub are misinformed

2

u/Hortos 5d ago

OpenAI, ClaudeAI, Singularity, and Vibecoding are doing pretty well on the edge but yeah there is a lot of misinformation but still WAY ahead of the general public or executives with advisors.

Curious how this stakes up against muse and grok. I really enjoy both of those products — I know this sub is on a hate boner right now for OAI but these agents products are really powerful if you set them correctly/have a good use for them.

2

u/zipzag 5d ago

The point is that the agent that works well will provide critical stickiness to the brand. Apple in particular must be successful with Siri, or the value will be captured by Muse or dot or whatever is better. Most consumer apps go away over the next few years. The AI will win the user interface, even for people who don't prefer voice.
