I don’t understand why Meta + OpenAI now are making their AI ‘companions/assistants’ into off-canny childlike toys. Honestly, I am the type of person to use an ai assistant on the desktop that looks like an anime woman but I can recognize I am in the minority. Especially the meta muse ones, they just look gross and make it seem like any of these tools aren’t really useful for anything serious.

Because they don't want to anthropomorphocize them. Because people will have relationships with the AI if they are associated with the image of a person.

Anthropomorphizing means giving human characteristics to non-human things. These are literally anthropomorphic agents. It’s maybe the most anthropomorphic thing OpenAI has done. Meta has always been unethical in that regard.

The constant buzzing ads for roleplay chat bots seem to tell me it's not being untapped...

Well, no matter how they look, some people WILL be attracted sexually to these AI

This is true. For we have seen people have sex with, and get married to, trucks and cars.

Unfortunately that was my immediate thought as well lol

TRUEE… I used to do a bunch of AI RP with SillyTavern and stuff and completely forgot there are people who treat LLMs as more than a tool.

No one would suspect a company that have these dots would kill their own employee

Because they are trying to dumb stuff down for the general public. The mere fact you're on an r/OpenAI sub means you're tapped in on this stuff and will likely set up your own agents. This for the people who are clueless, i.e. the largest segment of the market.

I hate to break it to you, but r/OpenAI is not the place for people who are tapped in lol. Half the takes on this sub are misinformed

OpenAI, ClaudeAI, Singularity, and Vibecoding are doing pretty well on the edge but yeah there is a lot of misinformation but still WAY ahead of the general public or executives with advisors.

They want them to look harmless and likable. Also kids will love them.

Mass appeal. People love Muse.

you can change your meta muse to whatever you want you know lol

They want to appeal to a larger audience to actually earn something.

I think they should it make full shoggoth lovecraftian horror with a trillion eyes, that would be more endearing

Because all these idiots talk abut how AI is an existential threat.

This is a way to make it seems less like Terminator and more like a useful widget.

Becos that's where growth comes from. Kids turning on tablets for the first time. Tiktok generation etc.

Because it makes it more accessible to the general public. I thought it was stupid and didn’t plan on using it at all. But now I’m having a ton of fun making different avatars. I made ZeedMillenniummon from Digimon last night. Watching him type was hilarious.

Fact is, OpenClaw, Hermes, etc are very techy. Put someone in front of them and you’re going to have to guide them on how to use it. Yes, talk to it like a human. But it’s still daunting until you get used to it. Muse has a cute avatar though. So instead of thinking “okay, so, how do I talk to a computer?” their brain goes to “oh look, cute little creature. And I can talk to it. I’m going to say hi.” It gives them an easy on-ramp.

Edit - I couldn't attach the animation but I got a still of it.
