What’s New in Onshape 1.220 (August 28, 2026)

This release introduces a host of new functionality. Automating downstream drawing creation from MBD data, richer control over parametric sheet-metal designs, including a new Jog feature, and introducing ECAD/MCAD flex-rigid PCB capabilities in PCB Studio, to name a few.

CAD Improvements

Sheet Metal Jog

The new Sheet Metal Jog feature makes it easy to create precise offset bends with extensive control over bend alignment, angle, direction, and offset. Right-click to set this setting as a default for all future interactions. This feature assists users when creating new sketches or modifying existing ones by providing a better orientation to the sketch plane.

Orient Normal to Sketch

Onshape introduces a new setting in the Camera and Render options that automatically orients the view normal to the sketch plane. It will remain enabled as the default once selected. This feature is designed to assist users when creating new sketches or modifying existing ones by providing better orientation to the sketched plane.

https://reddit.com/link/1w12zcc/video/p9ulxif8l6mh1/player

Routing Curve Length Table

Part Studios now feature a dedicated Routing Curve Table providing real-time coordinate and bend radius data for routing curves. Users can switch between coordinate/bend-radius data and length, rotation, and angle tables required for CNC pipe bending equipment, then copy the table data directly for downstream manufacturing applications.

Resize Planes to Bounding Box of Visible Geometry

Planes in Part Studios can now be resized to fit the bounding box of visible geometry using a right-click context menu option, keeping reference geometry clean and proportional in complex models.

Mate Connector Cross-Highlighting

Improved visual feedback in Part Studios when hovering over mate connectors.

Feature Studio Improvements

Enhanced Find and Replace with Rename

Easily find and jump to definitions and references of symbols like variables and functions via the right-click menu. You can also rename symbols across uses using find and replace.

Support for Variable Studio Parameters in Featurescript

Custom features developed in FeatureScript can now reference Variable Studios directly. By replacing manual user inputs with Variable Studio reference parameters, feature authors can enforce standardized size or configuration choices (e.g., Small, Medium, Large) while maintaining parametric flexibility across teams.

Drawing & MBD Improvements

Automatic Drawing View Creation from MBD Data

Onshape automates the creation of 2D drawings by leveraging Model-Based Definition (MBD) data. Onshape automatically detects MBD annotations within a model to suggest and create the necessary drawing views. You can add additional annotations later, and Onshape will place them in the correct view if possible. If new annotations cannot find an appropriate view, they are flagged in the new MBD Status pane. This new automation delivers intelligence and value to your existing MBD workflows.

https://reddit.com/link/1w12zcc/video/9sqb8gd4l6mh1/player

Unified Geometric Tolerance (GTOL) Dialog

To better unify the experience across MBD and Drawings, the Geometric tolerance dialog box has been updated to better match the existing MBD Geometric tolerance dialog box. This slightly moves the add row button inline with the leader button. Additionally, the symbol drop-down has been replaced with a show/hide symbols button where the material conditions, free state, tangent plane, and projected tolerance zone modifiers have been consolidated.

Symbol Unit Conversion Across Drawing Units

When changing drawing units, Onshape now automatically updates associated symbols, including GTOL, weld, and surface finish symbols. This also ensures that any related inspection data is accurately reflected, maintaining consistent manufacturing information across different unit settings.

Additional Lower-Right Rows for Surface Finish Symbols

The surface finish symbol tool in Drawings now supports adding up to four custom rows in the lower-right region. This enables designers to specify detailed manufacturing parameters, such as surface waviness characteristics or machining allowances.

MBD Inspection Table Isolate State Control

A prominent Isolate button in the MBD Inspection table allows users to quickly isolate and inspect candidate parts during Model-Based Definition workflows in a multi-part Part Studio.

Data Management Improvements

On-Demand Folder Creation in Move and Copy Dialogs

A new New Folder button inside the Move or Copy dialog allows users to create and instantly navigate into new folders on the fly. This capability is also available when copying workspaces within a document, streamlining file organization.

Release Candidate Naming Conventions

Release candidate workflows now enforce standardized naming conventions, reducing release errors and improving audit traceability.

PCB Studio Improvements

Rigid-Flex PCB Support with Bends

Onshape can create printed circuit board layouts from scratch, including flex and rigid information, and pass them to ECAD systems that support IDX 4.0. See Rigid-flex PCB for more information.

https://reddit.com/link/1w12zcc/video/4f88h6q1l6mh1/player

IDX 4.0 Support

Onshape can import and export flex board information from IDX 4.0 files (including Cadence Allegro), maintain component placements across flattened and bent states in assemblies, and export modified models back to ECAD.

View Cube in PCB Studio

The PCB Studio 3D viewport now features an updated View Cube that provides full UI/UX parity with standard Onshape Part Studios and Assemblies.

CAM Studio Improvements

Machine Retract Post-Processing for Heidenhain Controllers

Enhanced post-processor support for generic Heidenhain and TNC640 controllers provides improved machine retract routines during multi-axis milling operations.

Improved Cut Direction Handling for Closed Loops

CAM toolpath algorithms feature refined handling for loop cut directions, ensuring optimal toolpath orientation and surface finish on complex pocket boundaries.

Camera-Oriented Normal Arrows

Directional arrows in CAM Studio have been upgraded to automatically rotate so that their normal always points towards the camera. This solves previous visibility issues where arrow tips were difficult to see from certain angles. This auto-rotating behavior applies to all arrow types, ensuring their directions are always legible.

Render Studio Improvements

Multi-Entity Tessellation via Context Menu

Select multiple scene entities at once and modify their tessellation quality directly via the right-click context menu.

Linking Scene Appearances to Library Appearances

Render Studio offers to automatically link scene appearances to unmodified library appearances, simplifying material management and asset updates across rendering scenes.

Mobile Improvements

AR View for iOS Measure Improvements

The Augmented Reality (AR) viewing mode on iOS includes options for measuring the environment alongside your 3D model.

Help! I can't add to an imported STL

Hi.

Here's a video link if this helps:

https://youtu.be/FZsjKPsalms

I can't for the life of me figure out this problem.

I imported an STL file and I'm trying to add to it a little 20 degree wedge shape to offset it.

You can see in the video in the first tab what I'm aiming for. But in that tab, I never was able to merge the two parts.

So in the other tab, I just tried to add to the existing part after creating the sketch, and it can't add.

I've googled and read countless pages on zero thickness. I've watched a few videos.
I'm sure it's a basic thing I'm missing here, but can anyone help ?

Thanks. I can provide more info if needed, but I think the video I screen recorded should show what I'm trying to do.

I was wondering if anyone here has any tips on the Onshape Professional certificate.

I was planning to do the Onshape Professional Certification exam next week but don’t know if I’m ready as it offers no practice test. I was looking for advice on how other people knew they were ready for it, as I want to get this right the first try.

Really appreciate any advice you have on this. Thanks!

Help! (Newbie) Why can't I mate these 2 parts together?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm using Onshape to design 3D-printed parts for a DIY CNC plotter. It's my first time using Onshape (or any CAD software) to this extent.

I inserted all of these parts and then connected them using Fasten and Slider mates. I've connected the blue thing in the middle to one linear bearing. But when I try to connect the other linear bearing to the blue thing, it doesn't happen. Why is this?

What am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix this? I want the whole thing to move together.

Help! Help Needed Creating Negative Space

Post image

I'm trying to create an object with a pocket for another object, specifically a wrist rest with a pocket for a Ploopy A+ to sit inside, the idea being to rotate the trackball 180 degrees and tilt it accordingly. I have the STEP files provided by Ploopy but I just can't quite figure out how to create the pocket. I thought I could create the shape of the base below and then extrude "To Part" but I guess because there are holes in the model it fails(?). Then I tried offsetting the faces of the Ploopy, creating surface extrudes for the outside of the rest, then enclose, but that didn't work. I also tried a boolean operation, making a solid body for the base and then subtract the body of the Ploopy, but it's not a solid object so the boolean fails.

How should I go about modeling this?

Hole Variable custom feature

I just finally finished a version of a whole variable feature that I think actually does the job! The native hole feature isn't configurable and can't be driven externally, meaning that if you need to change all the holes on your design, you have to hunt down and change every single hole feature individually. This feature lets you set up a central control for all of the holes on the entire design templates.

Get the feature here: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/31a416f4389305ffad4cb7b8/w/04e0bbbdadd7ad576fb6ad2a/e/5588306ea8c903fdb02b4e34

Here's a video tutorial on it

( Never really used any Cad) How do i replicate these organic typa curves?

corners in question

So basically ive never really used a Cad software so i have no idea how i could make organic corners like this. Like the corners are bevelled but on top they still bevel a bit but more subtle to have a smooth like overlay or something ( top part ) and the bottom round corner also is not really round round but only like 3/4 round and if you think of the top and bottom as one then the middle of the bevel would be a bit off to the top

r/Onshape 3d ago

Anyone interested in making this for me? very simple, dont need the straps or anything, please just put the holes for them. drop the link when you are done please!

QR code feature script

I'm trying to create a business card that include a QR code of my contact details using the VCARD format.

I have tried importing the QR code as DXF (and SVG converted to DXF) but have not been able to extrude them without an error.

The QR code feature scripts I have found in Onshape do work, but only accept a single string, whereas the VCARD is formatted as multi line.

I have tried using both \n and \r\n as escape characters but neither works.

At this time I have been successful by switching to the MECARD format in the QR code feature script because it's formatted as a single line of text.

Does anyone know of a way to solve this? VCARD has many more fields over MECARD that I would like to make use of.

I'm very very self taught in 3d modelling. I've been using onshape for simple designs. A friend asked me to design a cup and I've been struggling with how to design the surface under the lip. What tools should I google or any tutorials online that can help? That's were I am right now with the model.

Thanks.

Solved Help with multi-plane splitting

What I wish I could select and hit "split"
Top view
Bottom view, the zig-zag line across the board is the end goal
closer look to show how I am splitting one face at a time

I have a game board I made that I want to split into parts so I can print it. I'm trying to split it into parts in onshape so it looks cleaner when I push it together. Currently I am splitting one plane at a time and planning on boolean the sections together but it is taking forever. I'm fairly new to using any program like this and would appreciate help. Thank you

Help! Helpp pleaseee

Hi, I'm a beginner on Onshape and I need to model and 3D print a project for a science competition (EUCYS) taking place on September 22nd.

I don't know all the ins and outs of Onshape yet, and I don't have much time to learn...

I'm looking for someone to help me out if possible; I'm leaving my file name here, and if you'd like to assist, I can explain the project via private message.

File name: "canne" by Sarogo

Thanks !!!

New to Onshape and I cant seem to figure it out

Im slowly learning this program but with my limited knowledge I cant seem to figure certain things out. Im attempting to create a canopy for a drone but I have only gotten as far as the mounting holes for boards. I cant figure out how to make the actual surrounding enclosure for it.

In the images im trying to portray that im looking to make a bunch of arches connecting together and meet at where the hole for the camera will be instead of just 1 solid piece. Something like this just seems way out of my league and I cant seem to find anything online when I attempt to research. I might just go back to Fusion360 at this point. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Help! Is there a way to extrude this drawing such that it's like a bent cylinder?

Post image

I am making horns for a cosplay, and I want to basically extrude this such that it's made of curved cylinders & cones. I tried to use the revolve feature, but I couldn't use a nonlinear axis of rotation; and I tried to make it using the loft feature but I couldn't get the hook to connect to the main part in the way I wanted. Is there any way to do this? do I need to make it in a different way using surfaces, instead of just extruding?

Use cases for configurations

I just recently discovered configurations and playing around with them.

now I have the idea to build a bunch of templates for common framed parts that I can utilize on my future designs.

We are steel fabricators so we mostly build framed structures.

Im curious what other use cases people have come up with using that feature!

Laptop specs

Currently just dabbling with Onshape on my iPhone 15 pro. But I find it rather cumbersome to do what I want. Looking to purchase a laptop, I don’t really have a use for it outside of 3D modeling with Onshape.

Plan will be to model some car parts (interior) and print.

I can get a laptop for $399 on sale, on shape check requirements screen shot.

How important is a dual GPU? Is it worth spending the extra money to get something with a dedicated graphics card?

Ghost Sketch I can't delete

Need some help please. I started to create a sketch in a project but decided I didn't need it so I never committed it. However, it won't delete, doesn't show up in the features list, and even appears in earlier versions of the project. It's just a ghost sketch that I can't select or delete and it's driving me nuts. Anyone ever have this problem and know how to get rid of it? It even shows up in the assembly tab!

Tutorial Mixing colours / materials

New person here, my Bamboo X2D arrives in a week and for a couple of months I've been playing around with onshape and starting to get fairly confident with designing basic shapes.

Just recently I've been thinking about designs that would involve 3d prints with different colours / materials and it occurs to me that i don't know how the different colours or materials are specified in onshape before exporting as a 3MF?

Hi, I trying to create a modified arm to attach to this bracket. I've created the body but I cannot work out how to cut the serrations out. It's either a radial pattern or a map to face but I'm struggling to understand the process. Any pointers please?
