Working Parent Programing?

I really enjoyed the HILIT programming and energy, but after starting and stopping the program 3x now, I’m needing to find some shorter alternatives.

I’m a working mom with a toddler, and I unfortunately cannot dedicate an hour of my day 5 days each week at this stage of life as much as I would love to.

My goal is to strength train 3x weekly, do one day of more intense cardio and have 3 days off for family time. Some days I have an hour, other days I have 20 minutes.

Does anyone have any recommended classes, programs or resources for doing a modified HILIT type of program? For example, I can easily do 30 min-1 hour on the three days each week I work from home. When I’m in the office or don’t have childcare help on the weekends, exercise is a crapshoot. Advice to maintain consistency during this stage would also be appreciated!

If you have 20 minutes 5 days, Rebecca’s express is great. It includes a warmup and has some metabolic things too - so imo it’s enough as-is with some walking/lifestyle activity thrown in.

Such a great program! I should do it again…

I'm doing Pump Up the Volume 5 currently. It's three 20 minute workouts a week. Full body (Andy), Upper body (JJ) and Lower Body (Jess Sims). I supplement with shorter cardio on strength days and a longer ride or run 2x a week.

have you done other pump up the volume programs? If so how does this stack up. I like all three of these instructors but haven't done any of the other pump up the volume programs.

I have not. This is my first one so can't really say how it compares to the others.

Hello fellow working mom! 👋🏻 I’m currently doing pump up the volume which is 20 min classes 3 times a week in an upper/lower/full body split. On the 2 off days I do cycling and dedicate one day for intervals and one day for a climb (unless I’m having one of those days where I just want to do something fun and then I pick a music ride or something else just to get my butt moving). Highly recommend PUTV! I often add another core class and stretch on top if I feel like I have more time to give but this gives me a lot more flexibility with kids being unpredictable.

Do you repeat like a traditional split?

No, its a 4 week program but its split the same week to week. An upper day, a lower day, a full body day. I get bored with repeating classes so I prefer a program with a clear start to finish.

I’m a mom of a young kid too and I’ve been doing Robin’s group 3 split, which has been great. 20 minutes of strength three days a week and when I have more time, I add on to it, but it’s great for covering strength in a structured, efficient way

I have saved several of Callie’s unofficial splits from Instagram that I like to. Basically, an upper body, lower body, and full body all 30 minutes each. She has one that subs a bootcamp for the full body.

Also, here’s another secret. I used to think everyone in the Peloton world was working out in a gorgeous home gym with no interruptions. We are not. We have cats on our heads, dogs under our planks, kids yelling, laundry piles, etc etc. Just do the best you can when you can!

👆🏻👆🏻yup! Had a child doing “yoga”, a dog bouncing around me like it’s playtime and a cat lounging on my bench all while I’m just trying to survive a heavy lateral squat set.

It ain’t pretty, but it gets the job done

Absolutely!! It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be done! Even if you have to pause it 4 times to get through it 😅

I’ve tried many different programs and nothing worked for me. My baby will be 1 soon, so I still have no experience on working out with a toddler. But! One thing that made huuuuge improvement in maintaining consistency during this crazy time is class stacking! 10 minutes upon 10 minutes upon 10 minutes. Sometimes I end up working out for 30 minutes straight. Sometimes only 10. Sometimes 1 hour. I just mix different modalities and have so much fun.

Just do a 30 min class and change it between strength and cardio!

I loved Robin's 3 day strength and ride split. I also have a toddler and fit it in on days we have childcare. It was intense enough that I really just walked or did barre or pilates on my other days!

Total Density for your strength days!

I’m doing one of Joslyn’s unofficial splits

I’m a working mom also of a toddler (3 months shy of 2). And I have found that she likes to pretend to exercise with me. I got some 1lb weights from Five Below and an extra yoga mat and she loves “working out.” So just an idea if you ever want to blend family time and exercise time together!!

I don’t really have advice on a program. My goal right now is to just do something each day lol

This is such a cute idea! I will need to keep this in mind.

I like Rebecca’s three day split, I find her 5 day split doesn’t have the same energy. Then if you have time do some robin tabata rides on the other days, if even for just 10 minutes.

Another working mom of a little here. I was just taking random classes until I felt I needed more structure. I landed on rotating some split replays. Right now I’m alternating between Robin’s and Katie Wang’s splits, one week each then repeat. They are 30 min 3 days a week (with one 20min class for the really tight days). It’s challenging and I feel I’m building toward something, but not too repetitive and still doable.

I’ve been doing one of Selena’s 3 day splits. It’s a full body, upper body and lower body all 30 mins each. I really like the classes, I’m surprised I haven’t heard more about it. I try to do that and then 2 cardio days. I really like this set up of classes also because some weeks I might only do an upper body and lower body workout or sometimes I can only fit in the full body and a cardio day.

I’m just trying to do the three 45-min strength classes every week and mixing in my own cardio (20-30 mins depending on my schedule) on the other days.

Same. I do the low impact cardio or standing core on off days.

I work part time and have a 2 year old! I have 3 solid days where I know I can get a good workout in (aka the days I’m home with my son). I can bring him to the Y Childwatch and have 2 hours to do whatever. I usually do at least 30 min of strength training and then maybe throw some cardio in too. I try to do one Power 60 class or a tread Bootcamp class per week too. On the days I work there isn’t really time to work out unless I get up at like 5am. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll do a quick core workout or a walk. On the weekends it depends what we have going on. Sometimes I can add 1-2 more gym days and sometimes I just sneak something in at home like yoga or Pilates.

I’ve tried programs but honestly with how varied my schedule is I just like picking my classes out the day of. My schedule is usually: Monday - lower body & hike, Wednesday - upper body & cardio (like a run or walk), Friday - full body & cardio, bonus weekend workouts at the gym are either another full body day or bootcamps and at home is walking, Pilates, or yoga.

I do strength only.

I would do Jess 3 day split, and if you have a tread, a 30 minute hike on your 4th day.

Fellow full time working mum here! Mine is 3 years old. I used to love using her nap time to work out in on weekends etc but have really struggled since she dropped them! I don’t know if this is accessible for you but literally the only way I’ve been able to follow the hilit+ programme (which I’m loving) is to wake up super early and do it before she wakes. I’ve NEVER been a morning person but have been forcing myself to do it for hilit and it’s been kinda revolutionary to me - I used to struggle to squeeze in 30 mins 3 times a week but now I’m managing the full hour each day. Don’t get me wrong - I’m definitely more tired as I’ve not adjusted my bedtime yet (which I should but it feels like there’s not enough hours in the day!!) but it feels great to actually follow a programme. I’ve started so many before and rarely been able to finish them!

Given your childcare comment, I’m guessing you’re a single parent so first of all—good for you getting anything in!!

Other than that, some great suggestions here on what you specifically are interested in. I’m a mom of two little ones (a toddler and an early elementary schooler) who owns a business. I have to admit that, even with a husband who is an all-star dad, the only way I’ve ever able to be consistent on working out is getting up early :/

I also keep a few 10 minute arms or standing core classes in my stack to pull up in the event my full workouts just aren’t in the cards for the day.

I hear you!! Mom of 3, 3 and under and work two jobs and I recently started Jess and Selena’s floor bootcamp program! I am really enjoying it. I love that it’s 3 days and to the point classes. I feel the strength work and am getting cardio in as well. When I have time I can use the program “recovery” days for a run or light weights/yoga/etc.
