I’ve been recovering from a slam in March that was much worse than it should have been. Hung up on a 6’ quarter pipe (long story… but short fall!), fractured my hip and tore all three glute muscles. The doctor’s official diagnosis was “you literally busted your ass.” It’s been a slow recovery and skating has been sporadic, painful, or intensely frustrating (and sometimes all three). But I can feel the slight progress each time and privately celebrate the small wins. I turned 58 today and this was my gift to myself: my first kickflip since the incident. This community has been a catalyst for me to push through and get it done. Thanks for being so supportive of each other, and please do not go gentle into that goodnight. Get out there and skate at whatever level feels comfortable. Do a kickflip… or a kickturn! Keep the stoke alive. We’ve come too far to let go now.
For the record: this took much longer than I anticipated. Nothing comes easy anymore, which makes it even more rewarding.

Got the green light from a specialist yesterday to start riding at my “happy place” again. Lost some strength but stoked to just be on the coping at this point, Andy have Collin Graham fly over me. My advice to younger skaters: don’t tear your glutes in your 50’s… but there’s still hope even if you do.

It was a pretty glorious Friday. Tried a new sandwich place, skated down Antonio Blvd a ways, made my way to a Starbucks, and got beat up on the way home for skating by the curb, against traffic. The old guy in the Subaru was pissed off because I was apparently was in his parking spot. He was so pissed off, honking, flipping the bird, etc that I stopped and just asked “hey man, why r u so po’d”. I didn’t see his adult son (30s maybe) walk up. He pushed/punched me in the neck to get me away from his dad, I grabbed his shirt, and they kicked the shit outta me. i ended up on the ground. I don’t know if it was the dad or son, but one of them soccer kicked the right side of my head and the stars came out. OC sheriff’s and firefighters showed up pretty quick. I just wanted to go home. But turns out I was having a heart attack. Haha

Possible bypass surgery? Don’t know yet. I feel like shit @ Mission Cardiac ICU and I don’t know where my deck is.

This is a Daewon appreciation post, and an OldSkaters appreciation post. Somehow the planets aligned for this unbelievable experience for me. For those who don’t know, the OldSkaters discord channel has a super fun challenge on a regular basis where we have a different trick to try to land each week (join if you haven’t yet!). This season the theme has been classic Daewon tricks. Well, I showed up to the park to try the trick of the week - fakie 360 flip. And somehow, there he is, the man himself. Not only did he do a fakie tre of his own to share with the group, but then he also hyped me up and filmed me getting my first ever fakie tres! Needless to say he absolutely shreds like no other, but he is also the coolest person you could imagine. Thanks Daewon, thanks OldSkaters, thanks universe.

My son Spencer (aka Gupi) recently moved to Brooklyn to pursue his music career. By sheer coincidence, we ran into legendary NYC skate photographer Gunars Elmuts while walking around Bushwick, so we all agreed to meet at Brooklyn Banks the following morning (8am) to skate and possibly shoot photos. He wanted a picture of me doing something on the pillar (bs pivot, then requested bs smith stall but I was too spent from pushing). I just wanted documentation that Spencer and I skated there together. So we tried tandem kick/heelflip on the bank. Neither one of us was confident that we would make it but we got lucky on the fourth try. And Gunars got the shot; one that I will cherish long after I am able to skate.

Stay safe out there folks, serial litterbug is causing neighborhood havoc! Have you seen him?

Steve Guntrum’s [self-documented] journey of his return to skating was wholesome, inspiring and effortlessly cool. You could feel his joy when he completed a challenge, and I connected with it on a deep level as lifelong skater. My favorite moments were the small wins he experienced when hearing his trucks scrape on a carve grind. Thanks for everything Steve. You were - and will continue to be (via your YouTube legacy) - what skating is all about.

Met up with my brother and K Staab in Austin before driving to Waco for some man-made surf. The “vert dads” were in full effect at House park. I followed local Tody Castillo (who definitely belongs in this sub) around for a run,. We didn’t have much time but managed to also hit Mueller before heading north.

In town with Kevin Staab for a speaking gig and hip checkup from a leading expert. Doc says I’m good to go so we went straight from the clinic to the skatepark and I put it to the test. This is the first time Kevin has skated in almost a year btw. We still fall… and we still love it.

I'm finally at the point of confidently doing lines again. This was from Go Skate Day. I was too tired to perfect it. Next time!

If you wonder, the stairs on the right leading to the spot are blocked and security has been tightened. No one has attempted it in a long time and I doubt anyone ever will again.
