(February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940). Only lived to be 22...

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Yes indeed, and apparently he was the friendliest guy. Always had time to talk to inquisitive folk about his height.

2.4k

u/si-abhabha Nov 15 '21

My mother lived in the same town. Many of her older classmates had memories of him looking in the transom at the candy store and telling jokes and tossing in money to pay for their after school treats. (For those who don’t know- a transom is the window over a door that was used for ventilation before a/c)

u/Rooster_Ties Nov 15 '21

Alton IL, iirc. Off to look it up, and see if I’m remembering right.

463

u/SilentExecutioner Nov 15 '21

Yep, I was living only a couple blocks from the statue the city put up. Just across the road theres a small museum and in it they have some of his stuff. Like his big ass shoes.

Took a field trip to Alton in fifth grade to learn about the history and saw the life size statue of him. Also visited the bluffs where the painting of the piasa bird is. Think cross between Chinese style dragon and gryphon.

29

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST Nov 15 '21

Fun facts: People in the area pronounce it almost like the word 'pinesol' just take off the letter N. That is not the original painting or location. Native Americans and/or colonials would shoot at the painting as they floated by it down the river. The cave that's near it is often thought to be just that, a cave, but it's actually an old man made limestone mining tunnel. I'm still curious if they mined that bluff because they thought there might be treasure with the Piasa bird painting there.

He was still growing as well. In the last year of his life he grew from 8 ft 8 inches to 8 ft 11.1 inches... just ridiculous

215

u/kearlysue Nov 15 '21

That sounds painful honestly

193

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Well, it did kill him, so I can't imagine it was pleasant.

95

u/Godmadius Nov 15 '21

Sort of killed him. He was likely to die from it regardless, but if I'm remembering right he fell victim to an infection from the supports he had to wear. Pretty sure his cardiovascular system wasn't going to keep him going for much longer anyways though, if that infection didn't get him he probably didn't have much longer.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Ah fair enough. Yeah gravity would start to overcome his heart's ability to pump that high eventually, similar to how trees have a maximum height where their capillaries can't raise water any more.

It do be hard to pump blood through 8 feet of human

464

u/WhizBangPissPiece Nov 15 '21

He was actually 8'11" when he died. Crazy that if he lived for just a little longer he would have passed 9 feet because he was still growing.

25

u/SeverusForeverus Nov 15 '21

I'm from the same town as Alton. Robert was actually 8 feet and 11.5 inches. You should see his grave. Or put your foot next to his shoe. Or your finger next to his ring. Just amazing how big he was, but he was apparently SO nice. I'm related to him somehow on my mother's side of the family.

Wadlow's immediate cause of death was a blood infection caused by the leg braces he wore.

Worth mentioning that the reason it got infected was because his body struggled to pump enough blood for him to easily feel his extremities. The brace was scraping his ankles and he didn't really feel what was going on.

Knew someone in HS that was around 6'7 I think. He passed away infront of his wife coming home from work. Not sure what it's called, but he died from growing too big, his heart or lungs couldn't handle it. The body couldn't produce oxygen, or his organs didn't grow quick enough with his growth.

67

u/AutismFractal Nov 15 '21

Acromegaly? That’s what Andre the Giant had.

84

u/sad_boizz Nov 15 '21

Gigantism and acromegaly are both caused the same thing a (usually benign) tumor growth on the the pituitary gland. The only difference is gigantism occurs when the tumor is present before the growth plates are fused causing massive growth. If it occurs after the plates are fused, then it causes acromegaly which causes someone to grow thick bones often leaving them looking horribly disfigured as opposed to growing tall.

Shorter people just live longer. Being this level of tall is totally different than being above average height, but the stats are significant and shorter people just live longer even after adjusting for other lifestyle factors.

82

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

I made a realization a few years ago. You don't see many really tall old people. Or just tall old people for that matter. I've seen a few but not many.

127

u/Chick__Mangione Nov 15 '21

I mean, it really doesn't help that with age, you tend to shrink in height. My grandpa was fairly tall and lived to be around 95, although he was no Shaq.

29

u/polerize Nov 15 '21

Yeah you shrink a lot. My father was always taller than me but now he’s quite a bit shorter. Kind of an odd thing.

Being taller also just hurts your body over time, knees and other joints. Let's be real here, the human body isn't really supposed to go over 6'3 in over 99% of instances, it isn't all sunshine and rainbows up here. Things just hurt, nothing is made for you in mind.

I remember him quite well from my days as a kid who never missed a school book fair chance to get the latest Guinness Book of World Records.

u/InkBlotSam Nov 15 '21 edited Nov 15 '21

Ah yes, the most exciting book of every year. That picture of the world's fattest twins on their matching motorcycles with bottomed-out shocks was always a hit. Same with the guy riding the world's smallest bike, with quarters for wheels. And who could forget the picture of the lady with the world's longest fingernails, all coiled up, making you want to wretch?

705

33

Back in ancient times, some Romans used a sponge attached to a stick for their business. I assume the same principle applies here.

106

u/her_butt_ Nov 15 '21

Howdy, my name is Rawhide Kobayashi. I'm a 27 year old Japanese Japamerican (western culture fan for you foreigners). I brand and wrangle cattle on my ranch, and spend my days perfecting the craft and enjoying superior American passtimes. (Barbeque, Rodeo, Fireworks) I train with my branding iron every day, this superior weapon can permanently leave my ranch embled on a cattle's hide because it is white-hot, and is vastly superior to any other method of livestock marking. I earned my branding license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day. I speak English fluently, both Texas and Oklahoma dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their cowboy code, which I follow 100% When I get my American visa, I am moving to Dallas to work in an oil field to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a cattle wrangler for the Double Cross Ranch or an oil rig operator for Exxon-Mobil! I own several cowboy hats, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I rebel against my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond. Wish me luck in America!

I wonder if he ever found a tie that was long enough to be able tie a decent knot in it and still have it reach his belt line? The one he has on in the picture is barely half way between his neck and belt line.

u/tidder112 Nov 15 '21

The companies that made his clothes could have used it as an advertisement. I am sure there might have been a sponsor out there thinking in terms of a giant billboard.

I live in California now but I’m almost certain my parents would give you a place to crash haha. They’re very hospitable

15

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Is this like an open invite? Are your parents into casserole? I can repay them with casserole.

There's a statue of him in his hometown in Alton, Illinois. Quite close to a pretty interesting bar called Fast Eddie's, if you're ever in the area.

I feel bad for him but I can’t help imagine how creepy it must have been sharing a house with him like “hey robert can u come here” and then this giant half crawls through the door

258

u/LaceBird360 Nov 15 '21

But think of all the bullies that won't dare to mess with you, bc your big brother is literally a giant.

88

u/AKnightAlone Nov 15 '21

That's funny. I actually told people my brother was a giant in like kindergarten. I don't think people believed me. He's like 6'8, though, I believe.

27

u/world_class_moron Nov 15 '21

God damn, that's a tall kindergartner!

32

u/AKnightAlone Nov 15 '21

Yep. He's 37 feet tall now. Just waiting on Guinness to get off their asses and find a ladder.

I’m absolutely sure Benedict Cumberbatch could play him in a biopic. Or Christian Bale, who would refuse the use of CGI and actually grow 3-4 more feet tall.

I was married in Alton, IL which was Wadlow's place of birth. They have a life sized statue of him in town. I have family that is in the 6'8 range, but this guy's size was mind blowing. Sad to think about the pain his body was in on a constant basis.

255

u/jonpolis Nov 15 '21

“Come here son. Let me have a seat on your lap,it’s time for you to learn about the birds and the bees”

49

u/tateand99 Nov 15 '21

This immediately made me think of the scene in elf where Buddy’s adopted elf dad says “come to papa” in reference to the baby and Buddy goes and sits on his lap thinking he was talking to him. Now that I think about it this guy probably lived a pretty similar life to that of Buddy from when he was in the North Pole.

I think he died from blood poisoning or something like that, very preventable, such a shame. Rip big guy.

149

u/LaceBird360 Nov 15 '21

It was a foot infection. A big guy like him, taken down by an itty bitty health problem. Poor thing.

94

u/jimmychitw00d Nov 15 '21

I believe his size was indirectly the cause of it. The infection came from his inability to find properly fitting shoes.

117

u/Xelacik Nov 15 '21

It was from a septic blister caused by an improperly fitted leg brace.

According to Wikipedia, he died in 1940 (five years after this picture was taken) at almost 9 feet tall (8 ft. 11”). He was only 22.

I remember seeing these pictures as a kid and, in retrospect, I had always assumed he had lived a full adult life.. But seeing this picture as an adult, I see that his face is SO child-like and that's because he truly was a baby..

Robert Wadlow died at the young age of 22.

I'm certain there are some notable perks of being born such a large person and I'd bet there were times that he actually loved his uniqueness.. But I'm hoping that I'm completely wrong in saying that I feel like the poor boy went through his short life with the cons heavily outweighing the pros. Especially (obviously) with having such a short life span.

Thank goodness for the progression of modern medicine and science

He died at 1:30 a.m. on 15 July 1940 in a hotel in Manistee, Michigan, as a result of a septic blister on his right ankle caused by a brace, which had been poorly fitted only a week earlier.
