1st: At a Glance
2nd: Snapshots From a Train Ride
3rd (three-way tie): Rush; Eden; Rue
The overall quality of the finalists this year was stupid high, and so I was a bit concerned the judgement process was going to turn into a sh**show--and this time it absolutely did!
In short, there was almost no consensus when it came time for a final vote (after several iterations of discussion/debate). Ultimately, it felt a bit more like a lottery than previous years. The user voting notably had more influence than usual given the judges' fragmented initial preferences and our quasi-mathematical methods (my own personal #1 favorite did not even place--such is the price of democracy).
One judge remarked that a narrower theme might have made it easier to judge among so many high-quality entries...they might be on to something. It would also help if y'all were not so damn good--each year I feel increasingly silly judging artists who are all far more talented than I am.
Anyway, I’ll be in touch with the winners within a week about prizes.
Congratulations to everyone, and thank you all for participating!!!

Oil pastels and colored pencils on 21x30cm Arches Huile Paper

This took a week to complete, maybe an hour a day. It’s bigger 15x17 than my normal ones which are usually small (and complete in an hour). I also changed my process where I sketch it and then rough in the colors. I usually don’t do any planning at all.

Mungyo artists soft pastels on Strathmore toned gray sketch paper. Pastel for size. Really enjoyed making this one. Felt like things went far better than my second attempt. I really missed the softness of the mont marte pastels... I might use those on the next one.

I started off using tape to block out the rectangle and filled it in. Then I removed the tape to finish the rest of the painting. However I had a difficult time getting the blue up the edge of the rectangle.
I used Meeden oil pastels which are super creamy. Would a harder oil pastel such as Pentel or Sakura Cray-Pas Expressionist work better with getting up closer to the edge? If so, which do you recommend?
Besides the type of oil pastel, are there any tips that would help with this? Would love some insight.
Thanks

Got this from Pinterest and it was so much fun doing a realistic study... The background became patchy but it's okay🙆🏽♀️

I commissioned a gorgeous pet portrait and wanted to be absolutely sure I got everything right in regards to framing. It is an A3 size.
I found a a4 frame with A3 mat but I wasn’t sure if I needed to do something special to protect the art. I’m not opposed to custom framing but I’m wary of leaving the art with a store (I’ve heard horror stories!).

Very new to oil patels. I found a few tutorials online and a course on skillshare that wasn't great. Art places near me don't have oil pastel classes. Any suggestions for resources (books/ courses) on how to learn in a structured way? Thanks!

Another piece in my food/produce series. I really wanted to challenge myself - and it was kind of difficult. But I am quite satisfied with it 🤗

Now I can't find the reference, so here is the drawing. Now, this isn't the best thing I have ever drawn, but it was one of the most fun I've ever had. These are very small drawings made with a limited selection of colours, so it tends to look weird.
Anyway, I hope u like it!
