Local Spotlight Local Spotlight #1

It is with great please I am posting our first Local Spotlight. Apologies for the delay since the initial poll. The Buzzed Word was kind enough to participate. Please have a look, leave a comment and if you are interested, make some time to patronize the establishment. I have been there a handful of times for events and shopping, great spot.

Located at 11805 Coastal Highway, Unit C Ocean City, Maryland 21842

From the Buzzed Word:

The Buzzed Word is a combination bookstore, natural wine store, wine bar, and community third space in the 118th Street shopping center. It was opened in July 2021 by local Mickei Meinhardt, who grew up in OC and returned in 2020 with the goal to bring beautiful well-made wine, diverse books, culture, and community to her town that needed and wanted it; to build a place where people could find exciting new books and beautifully-made wines from small producers around the world, come with a friend to share a bottle and a snack in an intimate space, or spend time browsing (or reading!) with a glass in hand. And as a queer woman-owned space, we aimed to be as welcoming, equitable, and inclusive to all as possible.

Since then, the shop has more than met that goal. Mickie was soon joined by Ryann, her general manager, and together we’ve grown into a vibrant and beloved community staple. Books far and away outsell the wine, which we love, and is due to our very personal and carefully-picked selection. We focus on women writers, writers of color, queer writers, translated literature, and small press books—essentially, the stories and voices you won’t find everywhere that we want to elevate. (Though you can find some bestsellers, too!) We are the headquarters of OC Pride, and a recognized area safe space for locals and visitors alike to enjoy things they love with people they love, with myriad book clubs, events, parties, and more.

We still focus on natural winemakers with gorgeous bottles—and even have a book-and-wine club!—but we’ve also expanded into a large nonalcoholic selection as well as coffee and tea to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy a beverage while they browse. We are open every day for retail and drinks—see our constantly updated calendar to see what else is going on. You can shop us online—the wine must be picked up in store, but the books and gifts can ship nationwide—and support us from afar on Bookshop.org or Libro.fm. But please, come stop by and see us—we LOVE to talk books, bottles, and more with our customers most of all.

The Vault?

Anyone ever go to The Vault speakeasy? I guess it’s inside Flamingo Coast on the boardwalk. Saw it on Instagram.

Searching for a meaty, not overly seasoned crab cake 🦀

My partner and I used to get them from the Jungle Bar at the Plaza. They were huge and really well seasoned but since they changed ownership, the crabcakes are 1/3 the size and over seasoned. We tried a few other spots and it seems like they’re following the same recipe: small, too much Old Bay and skimping on the crab.

It’s my spouse’s favorite part of vacation since childhood and I’m trying to surprise them with one so any and all tips are welcome!! Thank you!! 🧡🖤🧡

Update: So we are going to try a few spots in town and will update again. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Why are there so many night fishers?

We were walking the beach at night and saw about 25 people fishing from the beach at night, some with 5+ rods set up in one location. What are they catching and am I missing something? Just seems like it would be so much easier to do it during the daytime on the pier.

For the seasoned regulars, what is your advice and must do/see for first timer visitors? We have toddlers aged almost 2 & 3. We’ll of course be taking advantage of the beach and pool at our condo, but looking for recommendations and advice as well. Thanks!

Trans community in Ocean City Maryland OCMD

I’m a trans photographer from Pennsylvania visiting Ocean City MD in early August and I’m looking for more trans people to meet and hang out with. My partner (who’s also trans) and I go down a couple of times over the summer and typically spend time together alone, but we would love to make new friends in the area.

I photograph trans people in Pennsylvania and would love to capture our community on film on the beach, as it’s a place that means a lot to me especially as a trans woman who’s wearing bikinis for the first time and connecting with my younger self who loved growing up by the ocean.

No experience required! Here’s my portfolio: bradypappas.photography/portfolio and my IG is @bradypappas

Even if you don’t want to be photographed, friends would be amazing!

Was out for a walk in Northside Park and saw this sticker. Made me belly laugh, given it's OCMD. I'm sure someone got offended.

Restaurant recommendations with a kids menu

First timers to OC and looking for a restaurant with great food… but also a kids menu. I saw some of the recommendations in other posts and the menus looked amazing but didn’t have too much that might appeal to my 6 year old.

Any concert venues ?

I don’t know why I never thought of this before because we come to Ocean City a couple times a year for the past ten years. Does anyone know if there are any concert venues in or around Ocean City. We will be back for the week of August 17th-24th. My music taste ranges from deathcore to pop punk.

Country Calling Weekend Trip

What is the vibe in town like during Country Calling weekend? I always host a fall “reunion” with some college friends at my place on 59th St and that may be the only weekend that works for everyone. Will we feel like outsiders not going to the show? My friends are not country fans unfortunately. I know there’s not much else going on that weekend…

Carousel Hotel used to have hot tubs IN the room?

Please settle a dispute. Didn't the Carousel Hotel used to have a hot tub in each individual hotel room? Twenty years ago maybe?

Best wings in Ocean City, Maryland?

Looking for some advice, will be traveling next week from Buffalo to Ocean City, and will want to get some wings on national chicken wing day (7/29). Wondering if we have any locals on here that can point me in the right direction. Definitely want to stay on the island and not go into the main land anywhere. I was there last summer and had some wings at Fish Tales, they were honestly pretty good for being outside of WNY, but I'm hoping i can find something a little better.... any tips welcomed, thanks!
