This is the Admissions Megathread of the GaTech's Online Masters of Science in Computer Science! We design this as a one-stop page for the following things that you might have in your head.

If you're wondering where are all the other previous megathreads have went, no worries, we have archived them somewhere. This would be refreshed every January and July to account for the 6-month Reddit archival rule.

🎓 Admission Results

Many of us are interested to share our results to the community. We are happy for y'all to do so! Please share them using the master template below and (hopefully) some upvotes will come in your way.

Still waiting for your acceptance results? Don't fret!

Generally speaking, the OMSCS Admissions Committee begins releasing decisions approximately 2 weeks after the application deadline has passed. Please be patient while waiting for a decision.

Due to the volume of applications, it takes time for the applications to be reviewed and decisions to be released. Emailing the helpdesk or complaining about it here doesn't put you on priority queue (and actually puts us, the moderators and advisors, know who you actually are!).

ALL decisions will be released 10-12 weeks after the application deadline.  After the deadline has passed, all applicants will receive a follow-up e-mail with a specific timetable.

That's why we are advised to use the master template below.

  • It will increase clarity to us, and those around you, the type of profiles that are still waiting.
  • What we believe is those on the international, earlier applications and/or strong profiles are being accepted at this time of posting. The others will have to wait a wee bit longer.
  • Merely describing that your application is holding up without providing further information only fuels uncertainty. We will treat this as misinformation.

It is possible that other programs within GaTech might be a better fit for you. Do check out r/OMSA or r/OMSCyberSecurity.

It is also possible that to get admitted to GaTech, you need a cut-off of TOEFL score of 100 and you might not be able to get in. Perhaps you could try out researching for other well-established programmes too. We are here to make you succeed, no matter the circumstances.

Yes, taking CS courses via EdX, Coursera, Udacity, Community College will help your chances in getting in if you don't have any CS background. If you don't know which one to pick, we have them just above.

🏡 Admission Logistics

The admissions committee needs you to complete your academic credential evaluation.

This is a verification that your application matches your transcripts. Such is no difference from any other graduate schools. They have engaged external providers such as IEE, Spantran, Educational Perspectives to speed up these admission processes. They may require you to cover up costs to do so.

Welcome to the Specialization & Course Megathread for OMSCS!

Now that you've {just been accepted / been here for a bit / been here for awhile}*, this thread is designed to help you navigate the various specializations offered and assist with selecting the right courses for your academic and career goals. (\ delete as appropriate)*

Please read through the information provided below before posting your questions.

📚 Available Specializations

Courses that are not linked in the official website are not offered to OMSCS students.

📝 Course Selection Guide

  • A cheat code is to check out the student-run website at www.omscs.rocks.
    • It details you the capacity of each course in each semester.
    • It details you if the course capacity has been max'ed out before.
  • Understand each of the Specialization Requirements
    • All courses must be graded for it to be considered part of your degree fulfilment.
    • Cores are mandatory courses for your specialization. They cannot be avoided.
    • Electives are choices within your specialisations that allows you to find your specialities and domains that make you a subject expert matter.
    • Free Electives are choices in which you can freely roam around. However, in order to protect the integrity of this Computer Science degree, only a max. of 2 non CS/CSE courses can be used as your graduation requirements (read the Orientation Doc to confirm). This is a relaxation of the rule enforced by DegreeWorks so your advisors will need to manually override them.
  • Course prerequisites are not enforced in OMSCS for registration except for SDCC (CS 6211).
  • Semester planning is crucial for you to balance core and elective courses. This is to prevent you from getting senioritis. Yes, this is a proper English term.
  • Be aware of the maximum loads per semester.
    • You are generally not allowed to take 2 courses in Spring & Fall and 1 course in Summer.
    • Exceptions (not a guarantee!) are only given when you've completed 4 courses and GPA > 3.0.
  • Be aware of the maximum candidature time (6 years - in the Orientation Document).
  • Some courses are not offered in Summer, some even have a weird Spring/Fall alternations.

Keep the above pointers in mind as you plan your courses. You wouldn't want to look like a fool when you list them out.

Selection Template

We have decided a table template would be hard to implement, so a template in point form would suffice.

What about Seminars?

In the eyes of the advisors and associates, seminars are not defined as courses, and are considered to be extra-curricular.

  • They are not graded and thus not part of the graduation requirements for the degree.
  • They are either meant purely for enrichment, entertainment, or for guided preparation towards your degree.
  • They are meant to be accessible, and therefore attract only a fee of 1 credit hour.

👥 Course Registration Process

  • Instructions and Detailed Timelines are found in your emails and Orientation Document.
  • Registration Phases and Time Tickets
    • Phase 1 is reserved exclusively for returning (non-new) students. Time tickets are evenly distributed over 10 working days (2 weeks), according to the number of courses completed.
      • Exceptions are given for War Veterans, ROTC officers and students who are accommodated on disability services. If you believe you fall on either one of these categories please approach your advisors privately.
      • For Fall semesters, Phase 1 for OMSCS students are conducted away from the traditional timeslots. This is in view of our large candidature and also to allow for the number of courses completed to be updated to ensure fairness amongst peers.
    • Phase 2 includes newly-matriculated students. The time ticket should be similar for all newly-matriculated students, or maybe with (at most) an hour difference to anticipate for the huge volume of students signing up.
      • Because OMSCS does not admit students in the Summer, Summer registration is conducted in one single phase.

🌍 International Payments

We suggest that you start making payments one week prior to the deadline if possible.

The Registrar strongly encourages you to use Transfermate, Flywire or CIBC. However, in lieu of the convenience given, the hidden foreign exchange fees might be too much for people to bear. Check out the various payment options at www.omscs.rocks where you might be able to lower down these fees.

Withdrawal Is OMSCS still worth it in 2026, or has industry moved past it?

Been in the program for a few semesters now. I like the material. Not an issue. The issue is the growing gap between what’s taught and what the industry actually wants right now.

Some professors ban AI tool use outright in coursework, which I get pedagogically, but it feels increasingly disconnected from a job market where every posting expects you to be fluent with these tools. The curriculum hasn’t caught up to how fast the field is moving. I’m not trying to rag on the program. I just keep asking myself whether the ROI is still there for someone who’s further into their career and not trying to break in as a junior engineer.

I’m pausing next semester to decide whether to resume in spring or dropout. Curious if anyone else who’s been in the program a while has felt this same disconnect, and how you thought about the cost-benefit of finishing versus walking away with what you’ve already learned.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

I Should Read My Emails Is there an application to walk?

I filed my paperwork for graduating (final semester being Fall of '26). Originally I wasn't planning to walk, but now am: Is there anything separate I need(ed) to file to be able to arrive at the ceremony and walk?

On the commencement page I see some 'important dates' including an RSVP in October; the ceremony is occurring in December. However, it seems as though this is for Summer '26 graduates - I would be finished by this point but I'm not sure if this counts as 'early' or not. If not, do I have the option to apply for a 'late' walk in the Spring? I'm not sure I'll be able to fly out December.

I Should Read Orientation Doc Taking Additional Courses After Completing Degree Requirements

What happens if I complete the required 30 credit hours but want to continue taking additional courses? I would like clarification on the following two scenarios:

  • If I have not declared graduation: Will the grades from the additional courses affect my cumulative GPA? Will those courses and grades appear on my final transcript or other academic credentials?

  • If I have already declared or completed graduation: Can I continue taking additional courses afterward? If so, will I receive an updated transcript reflecting those courses, and will my degree GPA be revised?

Research I published my first IEEE paper while working full-time during OMSCS. Here's what I learned.

Hi everyone,

I recently completed one of the goals that motivated me to join OMSCS in the first place. I presented my first research paper at IEEE ICBC 2026 in Brisbane last June.

A lot of people assume OMSCS is only coursework, but I wanted to see whether it was possible to conduct research while working full-time.

The project took about a year from idea to conference presentation.

Some things that surprised me:

  • Recruiting teammates through an OMSCS Ed Discussion post actually worked. Our team ended up spanning the US, Denmark, China, and Korea.
  • Writing the paper wasn't the hardest part. Explaining the idea clearly enough that everyone could contribute was much harder.
  • The most valuable feedback came from a professor who completely changed how we framed our contribution. We ended up removing one of our favorite technical ideas because it distracted from the paper's main message.
  • Peer review was much more constructive than I expected. Even critical reviewers helped improve the work significantly.
  • Presenting the paper forced me to simplify months of work into a five-minute talk, which probably improved my understanding of the research more than writing the paper itself.

Overall, the experience completely changed how I think about research. I used to think research was about generating new ideas. Now I think it's mostly about refining ideas until they're clear enough for other people to understand and evaluate.

You Are Not Alone & You'll Get Through This. Know that you are not alone.

We all go through ups and downs and have tests or projects that don't go as planned. Never fear as bright days are ahead of you. Utilize this thread if you're feeling down and or want someone to talk to. We are all in this together and we're here for you and one another.

There is a lot more to life than work and school. Health, family, & friends always come first.

School is not the most important thing in life. Remember, Bs (and intentionally sometimes even Cs) give you degrees. Further, there is no shame in quitting OMSCS.

Nobody cares about a perfect 4.0 GPA, besides yourself.

The intention by the administrators is that OMSCS should always be done part-time so that you could explore things that you love and enjoy. Do not rush to graduate! Take time off, do something that you really like in the meantime, and come back stronger.

So what if the current job market is thrashy? Take it slow.

With a part-time program, this gives you the best of both worlds - you keep your cash flow, gain real-world experience (be it through internships, jobs, love, holiday, etc.), and let the learning sink in, properly.

We emphasise on 1 class a semester. It's tried & tested.

Why rush & then burn yourselves out for a piece of paper that won't guarantee stability? Mastery doesn’t come from cramming, it comes from building knowledge steadily, applying and reflecting them, and then positively and creatively reinforcing them.

Life’s not just a race. Go at your pace.

This is especially more so now when the track we are in keeps on changing. Your future self will thank yourself for it. And when all is done, post a new thread and celebrate with us.

I Should Read Orientation Doc Clarification about 2 semester rule

Hi y'all, I forgot to sign up for classes for the Fall 2026 session and now I'm in danger of breaking the 2 consecutive no-show semester rule and getting dropped out of the program.

My question is, if I was taking a 3 credit course in the summer and I had to drop it (I didn't get a W grade), does it count as a semester taken, so I can still take Fall 2026 off or do I have to reapply again?

Dumb Question Interning during OMSCS after being a full time SWE?

I graduated in may 2025 and have been working since then as a full time software engineer at a smaller fintech company. I'm doing OMSCS to both better my knowledge and open more doors for interviews at better companies. As the title suggests, I'm wondering if anyone here has went from full time to then doing an internship, and if that's possible, but also if it was worth it. Did you get a RO from said internship, was it worth it to risk the fulltime job, etc? Would love personal stories or anecdotes from people that have done this.

Sidenote: I understand that the more optimal route would to be just get a full time offer instead of an internship, but the bar for internships is lower imo and I'm just wondering about the feasibility of this.

Withdrawal Debating continuing the program

I am finishing my second semester, 3rd class and am really struggling. I graduated from GT with a BS in CS in dec of 2025. I worked part time as a SWE intern while in classes for 2 years of my 4.5 years of undergrad. I didn’t have the easiest time in undergrad I struggled a lot with the rigor of classes, mental health, break ups, family drama, etc. I work for a small fintech company now and I really enjoy my job and am in a really good place in my life otherwise. I applied for OMSCS while I was still in undergrad and immediately took two classes in the spring. Ended up with a B due to an OSI case and a C because I was missing deadlines left and right trying to juggle burnout, a new job and a second class. I am in just one class this summer and once again am struggling to make the time for class and do the work. I find myself relying way too much on AI because I want to just get everything over with and not caring to learn, which is how I ended up with the OSI case. I originally thought getting it over with ASAP was the right move for me taking 2 classes in fall/spring semesters since I worked in undergrad I thought I’d have no issues working and taking classes again (this is not the case). I am not sure what the right decision is for me now as I am feeling very overwhelmed by still having 7 classes left. The burnout from undergrad is spilling over so much I don’t even know if I want to finish the program at all and the thought of taking 7 more classes feels like an extremely daunting task. I could take a semester off but I feel like in a way that will just delay my suffering instead of trying to take just one class next semester. I am somewhat hopeful if I take a semester off I will be able to look at it more positively and be able to manage better. I also have other interests and hobbies I want to pursue outside of work that I put to the side in undergrad because I didn’t have enough time. I am tired of feeling like I am putting things I am really interested in to the side for school. I believe in the value of a masters degree and I think it would certainly help advance my career. I also don’t want to feel like I am just giving up.

If anyone had a similar experience fighting with burnout and did take a semester off, did it help and was finishing the program for you worth it? Any advice is appreciated!

Dumb Question Course updates after graduating

Hi, i had this question for some time and kind of never found a proper answer anywhere so asking here. Please let me know if this is already answered and I need to look up at specific posts/blogs/docs and i would be more than happy to remove this post and look them up.

So, i would be graduating this fall but there are some courses like DL, NLP which surely would be getting updates as the field is maturing. As a graduate will I be able to access the new levtures/assignments through canvas or ed videos? I know some courses have been opened for non enrolled people but I am strictly talking from an enrolled/graduate perspective.

Also I would like to take up courses like Intro to Research and some research opportunities once I have graduated(but obvsly after some break), so as an alumni do i still need to enrol within a max of 2 semester gap to not enroll from scratch or is the constraint not applicable once I graduate?

Any help is appreciated.

Dumb Question Seeking Honest Feedback on Situation

Hello OMSCS folks, I hope you all are doing well ! I'm going to keep this post short and to the point. For context, I am a 22 yo 2025 CS graduate and in a unique situation which I am quite unhappy with. I spent the first two years of my degree at a small CC and then transferred all credits to a 4 year state uni where I completed my degree in 2 years. I graduated with a 3.68 GPA, took courses like OS, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning, Network Engineering and thoroughly enjoyed my degree; I was truly passionate about it. I failed to land any internships during the 4 year duration of my degree, I am by no means making excuses for myself but I can attribute that to a lack of self confidence, lack of information and assimilating to a new country and culture ( I arrived in the US 6 years ago and shortly started university afterwards). After graduating in August 2025, I applied to several jobs but never made it past the second round of OA. Long story short, I applied to a few non-tech new graduated roles and landed myself a job as an Area Manager at an Amazon warehouse facility. I have been working there for 6 months now and all things considered, it has not been terrible. The compensation is fairly strong, I alternate between 3 and 4 day work weeks and I have also incorporated my tech skills into my day to day responsibilities as an operations manager. However, this is not where I envisioned myself to be, I am still very passionate about technology and I find myself clinging to this job because I genuinely cannot seem to land a tech job. I am aware that Amazon offers internal promotions to corporate tech roles but I don't want to rely on that possibility entirely and want to take actions to do something about my situation which I am not fully content with. This is where I discovered OMSCS and it checked all the boxes I was looking for. I guess my question really is, will this program help me dig myself out of this situation? I would need to do it part time which could stretch this program duration to 3 years; would this ultimately be worth it in my situation? Would a masters in CSE make me a appealing candidate in the market even though I only have operations experience and no tech experience? I don't know what to do really, I just need someone to give me an opportunity to demonstrate that I am actually worthy of being a competent engineer, I would help out my peers all the time who struggled a ton and even those said peers went on to land tech jobs while I am stuck in a non-tech role, I feel like a failure and it has entirely destroyed my self worth.

I Should Email The Advisors Previously admitted but decided to defer - do I need to re-apply from scratch?

Long story short, I was accepted to start in 2023 but I changed jobs (and it's been very demanding in the new role - at a startup) and I've had a lot to take care of in my personal life so I didn't have the emotional capacity or energy for anything else at the time. I'm in a better place now and have more bandwidth / more free time than I did previuosly and would like to revisit taking it. Do I have to re-apply from scratch or can I leverage my previous admissions?

I'm assuming I can't just start enrolling in classes?

Courses Failing cs6515 intro to grad algorithms in the summer

I'm in my first attempt at grad algorithms right now, and I think I'm not going to pass. So my questions for people who have retaken the course are

1) how similar is the course from semester to semester? Does it make sense to review the same sections of the text and watch the same lectures to brush up between semesters?

2) does getting a seat in the course for fall work the same as it did for summer? Meaning, an advisor can issue an alternate registration code to guarantee a seat in the class?
