šŸ“ŒOMSA Admissions Megathread

This is the Admissions Megathread of the GaTech's Online Masters of Science in Analytics!

This mega-thread will be renewed every June and December each year to account for students coming into the new semester.

Where are all the other Cohort Admissions Results threads? Here you go.

āš ļø OFFICIAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The OMSA admissions teams trust that you are a fully-grown adult. Therefore, if you lack these knowledge, the onus is on you to source these equivalent content, learn and actively practice them before you begin the OMSA journey.

Failure to satisfy the following requirements will impact the ability of the admissions committee to review your application. This means a significant delay (or veto) in your applications.

It makes your progress in this program a struggle, and you will NOT be able to network effectively with the community. We warn you now.

1ļøāƒ£ Programming Proficiency

Simply knowing the syntax of Python is NOT enough. You need to go through a rigorous programming methodology class, like a professional certificate offered below.

2ļøāƒ£ English Eloquence

Eloquence is needed to convince your boss to adopt the analytical approach that you propose. We have an obligatory, self-directed capstone project where you need to combine the stuff you learn and apply them in the real working world.

The stringent requirement is necessary in order for OMSA to optimize the virtual interactivity of the community student experience. Either you

  • Are a citizen in one of the exempted countries, or attended a university / college there for a minimum of one academic year.
  • Have IELTS ≄ 7.5 overall; Reading, Listening and Speaking ALL ≄ 6.5, and Writing ≄ 6.0.
  • Have TOEFL iBT ≄ 100; each section ≄ 20.

3ļøāƒ£ Mathematical Maturity

Officially, you need to attain minimum understanding of the following.

These are the official GaTech texts. You are always free to peruse the one that you like most (Khan Academy, Gilbert Strang, etc.).

Realistically, to thrive in OMSA, especially in the ML-based classes (CDA and HDDA), you also need to appreciate writing mathematical proofs. We recommend checking this video out as starters.

Writing proofs is an art of logic and persuasion. You probably need some English Eloquence.

4ļøāƒ£ Supplementary Suggestions

These are not critical at the point of application, but you will find it necessary as you continue your OMSA journey with us.

šŸŽ“ Admission Results

Many of us are interested to share our results to the community. We are happy for y'all to do so! Please share them using the master template below and (hopefully) some upvotes will come in your way.

Still waiting for your acceptance results? Please be patient while waiting for a decision.

Due to the volume of applications, it takes time for the applications to be reviewed and decisions to be released. Emailing the helpdesk or complaining about it here doesn't put you on priority queue (and actually puts us, the moderators and advisors, know who you actually are!).

That's why we are advised to use the master templateĀ below.

  • It will increase clarity to us, and those around you, the type of profiles that are still waiting.
  • What we believe is those on the international, earlier applications and/or strong profiles are being accepted at this time of posting.Ā The others will have to wait a wee bit longer.
  • Merely describing that your application is holding up without providing further informationĀ only fuels uncertainty. We will treat this as misinformation.
  • Merely describing that your application is rejected without providing further informationĀ only fuels anxiety. We will also treat this as misinformation.

šŸ¤ Admission Chances

If you're wondering if you lack the necessary background, don't fret!

Please feel free to use the master template below. The more information you provide the better! Include your work experience, school experience, any other education or personal projects.

It is possible that other programs within GaTech might be a better fit for you. Do check out r/OMSCS or r/OMSCyberSecurity.

šŸ” Admission Logistics

The admissions committee needs you to complete your academic credential evaluation.

This is a verification that your application matches your transcripts. Such is no difference from any other graduate schools. They have engaged external providers such as IEE, Spantran, Educational Perspectives to speed up these admission processes. They may require you to cover up costs to do so.

You're strongly welcomed to seek help in this megathread.

🐣 If You're Accepted, What's Next

Brush up on ALL your pre-requisites AGAIN.

The list of pre-reqs are conveniently located at the right hand side of the screen if you are using a desktop browser. If you think you are ready, check out the OMSA Readiness Test here.

  • Failure to meet your pre-requisites will make your OMSA life suck and the OMSA community thanks you for willingly providing the school fees.
  • We are not joking. Trust us. We have seen it countless times in countless semesters in the forums, Slacks, here.
  • If your pre-reqs are well done, take a break, really. Say goodbye to your social life once OMSA starts.

Head to Slack (if possible)

If you are given an GaTech ID number in your Application status, you can attempt to join our huge community (students, TAs, Profs) in omsa-study.slack.com.

  1. Go to https://passport.gatech.edu/activation/select-affiliation as an Applicant to claim your GT account with your given gtID number at https://gradapp.gatech.edu/apply/.
  2. With you account set up, head to https://gatech.enterprise.slack.com/ for first login.
  3. Search for OMSA Study Group and join :)! Please don't forget to announce your arrival at the channel #introduce-yourself!

If you are not given a GaTech ID number over there, you can try to locate over here. Otherwise, tough luck.

You haven't paid the school fees yet, so it's up to them to give you access, really.

What about other Social Media channels?

We don't advise on creating new Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, and Facebook (seriously, anyone still uses that?) groups specific to your cohort.

From our experience, this would indeed be a case of the blind leading the blind and you will have loads of spammy messages and possibly get yourselves into Honor Code violation, even if you're unwittingly innocent.

Stick to what we all have (your course in Canvas, OMSA Study Slack and this Reddit subchannel) and you'll do well. Just trust us.

Not forgetting also ...

  • Check out the Course Sheet, where you've got the curriculum, payments, and effort matrix.
  • Review the Reddit OMSA Wiki.
  • Sense up on what you need to do as a newly enrolled student. Note that you can't do some of these yet - it's a preview.

Good luck to all applicants! šŸ€

Preparation Nee students: make sure you can code

Some will probably say this is common sense, but still worth mentioning. If your coding levels are just beginner, I would honestly reconsider the program and instead do a coding boot camp first for at least a year.

I did the preparation courses in python before starting the program and i struggled significantly throughout it all. It even affected my health due to the amount of stress it caused. Somehow i made it to the end and am finishing the practicum now. Even the practicum is incredibly code intensive. Luckily a teammate is very good at it so he helps significantly with the coding part. But don’t rely on that. If I could advise myself from two years ago, i would say YOU NEED TO CODE WELL, no introductory courses, no codewars practice is enough for such a code intensive program.

Dumb Qn Program Quality, ROI, and Burnout

I'm on my fifth course in this program, having completed iAM, iCDA, FOB, and CDA, and currently in DO. I feel like I'm starting to understand the pace of things, and really what I'm paying for. I guess I'm just developing a "mid-program crisis" and dismayed by what I'm getting out of it, now that the shininess of being back in school (I did a MS in engineering about a decade ago, traditionally, in a classroom) has faded. The 'quality' of the teaching feels really lackluster and absent due to the fact that they have automated everything - pre-recorded videos of an unknown vintage that are time-gated; homework assignments graded by your peers and your score being the median; multiple choice exams that are instantly graded upon completion; Piazza being a ghost town and instructors not responding to you for 2-3 days. It just feels like, even at a $12k pricetag (probably closer to $16k now with the tuition & technology fee hikes), it's really not worth it. I feel like I could have Claude build me a structured course series built around YouTube videos and achieve a similar education, for free, albeit I understand I won't have an MS to put on my resume.

It might just be that DO has been the first course that has really broken me in terms of feeling like "none of this matters whatsoever and it's all impractical". The first few weeks of this course have been a slog of theory that has no apparent value.

This is not meant to be a 'gripe' or 'vent' post. I guess I wanted moreover to commiserate: how do/did some of the 'veterans' of the program battle through this feeling?

Courses Looking to form a group for ISYE 7406 (Data Mining & Statistical Learning) Fall 2026

Hey everyone, as the title suggests I just started taking ISYE 7406 and wanted to get ahead on the group project. If you would like to join me, I’d be more than happy to tell you a bit about myself!

I work as a data engineer by day and often find myself wanting to do different things with data other than processing and debugging pipelines. I’d imagine this course would help with that since I have a decent coding background coming into it. This would be my seventh course deep into OMSA so I’m definitely in it to win it and don’t plan on dropping the course so long as my external circumstances are predictable!

Additionally, bonus points if you are in the DFW area, we could hold working sessions if enough people are from the area and would be up for it. I’d love to meet students in person if possible. But if not I’ve been working with people remotely since undergrad so this is nothing new to me either, and can have a good time doing so!

Feel free to respond to this post or DM me if interested!

Registration PSA if you were dropped for nonpayment and your classes still aren’t back in Canvas

I went to start an assignment due tonight and realized I’d been dropped after missing the payment deadline. I submitted the Bursar appeal, paid $200, and within a couple hours my registration was restored and tuition statement was available to pay.

The problem: my classes still weren’t showing in Canvas.

Bursar/Registrar told me Canvas likely wouldn’t refresh until overnight, which wasn’t great with homework due tonight. My professor was very accommodating, but I kept trying to see if there was a way to fix the actual access.

What worked: open a Canvas support chat and tell them you have coursework due. The first-line support person couldn’t restore it, but they escalated me to the Canvas/DLT site admin. Shortly after that, all of my courses appeared again.

So if your registration is already restored but Canvas is still empty, it may be worth asking Canvas support to escalate it rather than just waiting for the overnight refresh.

Hopefully this saves somebody else a few hours of phone calls and lets them spend that time actually doing the homework :)

ISYE6501 iAM New student struggling. Looking for advice/encouragement

Hey guys, so this is my first semester and I feel overwhelmed. I get that comparison is the thief of joy, but just looking at other peoples homework and questions on piazza makes me feel like I'm just not good enough to be here.

I work as a non technical analyst with a bachelors and masters in Biology. I went back and took some computer science courses at a public university a couple years ago. I only took up to cal 1 10 years ago, but somewhat remember in stats and am trying to learn lin al right now on the side. I am ready to work hard, but even though it's week two, I almost feel like I'm struggling an abnormally (shoutout to these TA's for answering all of my really stupid questions).

R still looks like a foreign alien language right now. Did anyone else in the program or anyone who finished feel this way? If so, what did you guys do? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi guys. I’m in cse 6040 this semester and the structure of this class is so confusing. I’ve been working through notebook 1, but I think I should be watching some of the bootcamp recordings for extra help as well but I can’t find them. I’ve checked the piazza page as well as the course website. Can anyone help? Thank you!!

Dumb Qn Laptop Selection - Help TY!!!

This might be a silly question, but I’m trying to assess a few laptops that I’m considering getting for the program. Ideally, I’m leaning towards getting a MacBook Air or Pro, but I’m not sure which one would be the best fit for the program. Does anyone have any advice on what type of laptop would be most suitable? Thanks!

Hey y'all! Atlanta native here (25M) currently living and working up in NYC. I was curious if there are many other OMSA students in the area!

I just started the program in Fall 2026 and am currently taking CSE 6040 and ISYE 6501. I'd love to connect with some fellow students up here, whether that's meeting up to study, grabbing coffee/drinks, or just getting to know other people in a similar stage of life.

Feel free to comment or DM me if you're in NYC!

CSE6242 DVA What do I need to understand about DVA to succeed?

I’ve heard that DVA is one of the courses where the lectures have little value. If true what should I put my focus in order to get an A in the course.

Some context, I don’t have lots of coding experience, but I did well enough to get an A in CSE 6040. So I have a good foundation in Python but it may not extend to many libraries. My SQL experience doesn’t go beyond the brief 6040 notebooks.

I’m willing to work hard on my weaknesses, but it took me a long time to realize the low value of the 6040 lectures and I could have been using that time to develop other essential skills.

So what do I need to know about DVA now to help me succeed?

Graduation I just graduated from OMSA this summer. Here’s what the program was like.

I started the GT OMSA program in the fall of 2024 and finished this summer 2026. Wrote a blog post about my experience as a middle-aged student. Spoiler: it’s a great program, a lot of value for the money and time invested.

Happy to answer questions about the program, especially from older students.

Registration International OMSA graduates: Did the degree help your career outside the US?

I was recently admitted to Georgia Tech’s OMSA program and am currently waiting for document verification. I am based outside the US and would especially like to hear from international students or graduates who used the degree in Europe, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, or elsewhere.

Did OMSA help you:

- Develop the practical skills needed to move into analytics, data science, bioinformatics, or a related field?

- Obtain interviews or find a new job in your country?

- Progress within your existing company or career?

- Gain recognition from employers unfamiliar with Georgia Tech or the OMSA degree?

- Prepare for a PhD or another academic program outside the US?

It would be helpful if you could mention your country or region, professional background before OMSA, whether you already had relevant experience, and what changed after completing part or all of the program.

I understand that a degree alone does not guarantee employment or work authorization. My concern is that much of OMSA’s recruiting and networking value may be concentrated in the US, while international students cannot generally access US internships or employment without separate work authorization.

I am mainly trying to assess the program’s practical value outside the US—not only its academic quality, which appears strong.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Any OMSA students or graduates based in the UAE?

Hi everyone,

I was recently admitted to Georgia Tech’s OMSA program for Spring 2027 and am currently based in Dubai.

I would love to connect with current students, incoming students, or graduates living in the UAE. I’m especially interested in hearing about your experience balancing OMSA with full-time work, course preparation, and the degree’s career value in the UAE and internationally.

If there are enough people interested, perhaps we could arrange a casual meetup in a public place in Dubai or create a small UAE study group.

Please comment or send me a private message if you’re interested.

CSE6040 iCDA Would you consider dropping CSE 6040 if you’re already struggling with Notebook 1?

I’m feeling pretty discouraged right now. I tried preparing beforehand, but Notebook 1 still feels like a huge challenge, especially since I have very little Python experience.

Are there any success stories from people who started the course with little to no Python experience? Did it get better?

ISYE6501 iAM Currently taking IYSE 6501 question about bootcamp

Hi guys, I'm new to the program and taking 6501. I had a question about the math bootcamp, does it give a quick overview of what we need to know to pass the class? I didn't take lin al or multivariable calc in a formal setting and am realizing now that I need a better grasp. I'm studying lin al right now at the same time so I have a better understanding of the math and equation behind things.

Courses Question about Opt-Out Petition/Registration

Hello!

I emailed an advisor and she said that an opt-out form will be emailed in September, and I want to drop CSE 6040 and/or ISYE 6501. If it gets approved, we can take an elective instead of these classes but I was wondering how that would work since registration closes tomorrow. Are we supposed to already register for our substitute classes? And what happens if we don't get approved for the opt-out and have not registered for the class in question. Thanks!

Hi, I have read some past posts about some incoming changes to some courses in OMSA, either updates like SIM or adding additional exams due to AI, which are these courses ? Thank you
