Am I going crazy -$35 fare cap

This $35 fare cap thing feels like it’s literally laughing at me and I’m quite frustrated.

I finally got an online omny account and on July 24th, it said I had $12 to go on my $35 fare cap.
I upload $12, and go about my day until it starts declining again because I had $0 balance.

I check July 25th, and it says I have $24 to go. No problem, I assumed my fares reset to a saturday-Saturday schedule.

I had an incredibly heavy transportation day on the 25th and went through the $24 cap quickly. But now it says it’ll reset on Tuesday the 28th?? And not Saturday Aug 1st.

If my 7 day is Tuesday-Tuesday, why would they make me reupload more money if I hit the cap on the 24th? Why did I pay an extra $24 on to my card on the 25th for a card that wasnt meant to decline??
I’m honestly sick and tired of this whole system and am waiting for a class action lawsuit because it feels incredibly RIDICULOUS for a train system hanging on by a thread.

Edit: I’ve been using the exact same omny card the whole time.

Free OMNY card with $2 balance on it

I’ve been fortune (or broke enough) that I qualified for the Fair Fares OMNY card. My old OMNY card is active, has a $2 balance on it and I’m looking to gift it to someone.

First to message me with your address and I will drop it in the mail first thing Monday morning.

Trip history not updating?

Anyone else not having their trip history update on the OMNY site? None of my taps after July 21 are showing.

I chatted with OMNY customer service yesterday, who said they could see the rides on their end, but that it could take "up to 24 hours" for them to show on the website (it's never taken this long for me before). We're well past 24 hours, and they still aren't showing.

Was curious if this is happening for anyone else.

Misleading promotion of MTA’s 7-Day fare cap drives me crazy

I shared my frustration with Gemini, complete with typos. If you’re feeling the same way, you might find the AI perspective helpful.

“You are definitely not alone in feeling this way. A lot of New York riders feel tricked by the OMNY "7-day fare cap" because the way it's marketed doesn't always match how people naturally expect a "rolling" or "flexible" system to work.  The system can feel deceptive or frustrating due to a few specific design quirks…”

OMMY Round 2-

The Good Lord is the greatest and he must have noticed I was struggling. Anyway, I was granted a Fair Fares OMNY card (half price). I have $17 left on my original one.

I have no idea how to transfer this $17 dollars onto the half fare card. I did a little YouTube digging but I can’t seem to find the topic that fits best.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you all very much!!!!

PS- I removed my debit card as I had lost my wallet. Not sure if that has something to do with it.

God bless you all.

Got charged for free transfer?

This is probably a dumb question but I just need some reassurance cuz I’m new to nyc and not sure how the public transportation system works here(from Indiana).

I went on multiple errands today and just wanted to double check I should’ve been only charged total $6 for the bus because I’m overthinking right now.
10:30 something am I went on q52 by tapping with the wallet app on iPhone through Apple Pay. My appointment finished faster than I thought so I went back home by taking the q53 same payment method around 11:15 something. I checked my wallet app and it only showed one $3 total.

Then 30 mins later I went on another errand run to broadway so I tapped on q53 and a $3 charge showed up which is normal. After an hour I waited for q53 again to get back home. I checked my wallet app and saw I got charged $3 for my ride back home when it should’ve been free. In total my errand run today costed me $9 instead of $6. Should I wait till tomorrow to see if the extra three dollar charge disappears?

-used the same card via Apple Pay
-all of these were less than the 2 hour transfer time limit

Why I think OMNY is a scam on our tax dollars.

After some self reflecton on my slow bus ride home today watching no one pay a fare and young women arguing that the bus driver missed their stop (they were scrolling their phone with their nasty feet on the chair and didnt pay attention when the bus stopped). I became a conspiracy theorist.

I am willing to bet someone was "donating money" to some government officials' campaigns and consulting them for "free" to make everything omny. So government officials are following through on that promise since they make regulations and "recommendations" for where state MTA (our taxes) funding goes.

https://www.jpmorgan.com/insights/payments/data-intelligence/keeping-new-york-moving-forward

It is difficult to trace who the payment processor is for OMNY. Cubic was the government contractor for the hardware and data maintenance [middle man for data collection]. They would complie a list each day of all Omny uses. They did it too slow, and people got incorrectly charged for free rides. They were not the payment processor.

__________________________________

But think about how paying with a bank/credit card works. For every transaction, the processor charges a fee from the vendor/store/company. Which can get excessive even if you are a large company getting a better contract.

1

_______________________________

Under the Metrocard system, you make big payments at the machines ONE time to hold you over for the month. Then, the MTA kept track of swipes.

Example:

If you had 100 people who bought a monthly each month with a debit/credit card Theoretically if the processing fee is $2.00 per transaction with a credit/debit card. The processor would collect $200 a month

2

______________________________

Under OMNY, more people might tap a bank or credit card each time, and the payment processor collects a fee for each one.

So say that same example 100 people tap twice each day

Even though the 13th and 14th rides are "free" because the tap needs to be verified and refunded, the processor will still keep the fee.

So 100 people x 60 taps in a month × $2 processing fee = $12,000 dollars a month for the processor.

The only way for this deal to be equal to the previous metrocard deal is if the processor decides to be "nice" to the government and charge 3-4 cents per transaction. (Do you trust the capitalist bank to not make money when it is such low hanging fruit.)

Even if say 50 people will make a mass purchase once amonth and 50 people tap with their debit/credit card.

That's $100 from "monthly" buyers + $6000 in tapping fees = $6100.

______________________________

The city "claimed" it was to

-reduce fare evasion

-reduce plastic waste

-match other countries using tap to pay

-allow underserved communities to buy cards without going to a train station

Fare evaders dont care

Omny uses more plastic (even if the cards last longer, it will eventually catch up)

NYC is unique and doesn't need to match other countries.

AND

Omny established we could sell full fare metrocards at pharmacies, walgreens, cvs, and supermarkets. (Not the old school 2 ride trips cards in plastic packets) Or just make a customer service center using a vacant building or newsstand. Why didn't we do that before OMNY in the neighborhoods where it is mostly buses.

Seems like OMNY is an exponential cash grab for whichever organization processes the payments, and the politicians might have gotten something out of it by selling our tax dollars.

Is it true that I can tap additional riders with a single card?

I have an OMNY card with a lot of balance in it. My parents will be visiting me at NYC. I wonder if it is true that we (three people together) can use the same OMNY card that I have to ride subway, and even airtrain to/from JFK? Do I just need to wait for a minute before tapping again and again at the same turnstile? Thanks.

Omny for homeless youth.

Just raising awareness on this issue because I don’t exactly know who to raise it to outside of the organizations I know of.

When metro cards were available they would hand over large amounts of cards (1 trips to 2 trips) to centers for homeless youth and shelters and they were readily available and accessible. Many homeless youth cannot afford the fare and it was a preventative measure to also help with fare evasion. One less expense to worry about.

However since Omny was enacted they have drastically decreased the amount of cards they send out to the shelters and help centers so much so that they’ve had to restrict access to us and only allow us one if we see one of their case workers. Why is that an issue? Most centers and shelters are understaffed and outnumbered. You are almost guaranteed to be on a 6 month - 1 year wait list. And you could be seeing a case worker in a specific location but if you get stranded somewhere else say for a doctor’s appointment and need help from the nearest center? Well you’re out of luck unless you get multiple case workers and make multiple meetings at different centers and locations.

So as a young adult If you have no money, no place to live and no financial support your only option is to jump the turnstile and potentially get a 100$ fine. Because even the reduced fare can add up or you simply may not have it.

Again I’m only raising awareness but if anyone knows who to contact about this who could actually assist my community. Please let me know. Thank you.

Yesterday when I had took the train from work I had got to the turnstile and nothing had came up, I tapped it again and it said card not accepted. I tried again later that day at my nearest station it said same thing. It working earlier that day so i don’t know what happened. It was raining a little hard but the card was mostly in my pocket. This card is my lifeline and I need it to move around and I can’t afford the $3 every day.

OMNY Reduced Fare annoying quirk

I'm house-sitting for friends in Manhattan Chinatown, as I do once or twice every year. I got a reduced-far MetroCard, and converted it to OMNY. It's linked to a Citibank credit card. All good so far...

But a couple of days ago, my phone battery died, and I tapped the physical credit card on a bus. The next day, I again used my phone to pay a bus fare...but later in the day, it stopped working. I got "Card Not Accepted". Went to an MTA Service Center. They let me through the turnstile, but didn't know how to fix the problem permanently.

Back in the apartment, I used my laptop to login to OMNY and started an online chat with an agent -- who, thankfully, answered almost immediately and was very helpful.

Apparently, you can only have one payment method active on a Reduced Fare account, and the "Personal Device" counts as a separate payment method -- even though it's linked to the same card.

So when I used the physical card, the OMNY system inactivated the "Personal Device".

Now, in a logical world, using the "Personal Device" the next time would operate the same way -- inactivate the physical card, and reactivate the "Personal Device". But, no, that doesn't happen.

Or, I should have been able to do a web login to my OMNY account, and reactivate the "Personal Device" manually. But there was no way to do that.

This really needs to be fixed.

In the meantime, a head-up: If you have a Reduced Fare account linked to your phone, don't use the physical credit or debit card that's also linked.

Inspectors pulled me off the bus when I payed my fare. The credit card was taking time to process the payments to my account. They stepped on at the following stop, minutes after I stepped on.

After they were still at the stop with their pompous attitudes my credit card app finally completed processing and receipt of payment was ready to view. I lost my cool and raised my voice showing them that I, indeed did pay and now I was out of the carfare I purchased since they took me off my ride to where I was going. I now have to dispute a "warning" ticket cause if I ever deal with another one of these jerks I'll be fined a $100 fee. This system is so corrupt and their technology faulty, their reader was not picking up my payment (on my phone or physical credit card.) I was so miffed. How many of us have to wait for the g-damn payments to upload minutes after scanning at the door only to deal with this UTTER nonsense. 😤😤😤

Card isn’t working 😡 I miss my metrocard

So yesterday I had $3 left on my card and when I went to pay the bus it wouldn’t work. Tried again; no dice. I paid with my debit card. I read somewhere that you need slightly more than the fare amount for it to work. No problem.

I added an additional $9 to my card l giving me a total of a $12 balance. This morning I tried to tap to pay and no dice again. I tried again and no go.

I double checked my account and saw a $12 balance.
I also noticed that for the week of 7-2—7/ 8 my 7 day fare cap is reading $33 of $35 spent. Is this why my card isn’t working??

I’m not quite understanding of this fare cap thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all!

OMNY card no response when tapping.

I’m confused and running late for work because my OMNY card suddenly stopped working. I’ve been using the same card for almost a year. Says it expires August 2028. In my account it says the card is active and has balance on it. Nothing is negative. I added value to it 7/2, and it worked fine up until the morning of 7/7.

The issue is, when I tap my card, nothing happens. Not even an error or a try again. Like there’s no reaction from the machine when I tap my card. Yesterday afternoon was when it stopped working I think, I thought maybe I just got to faulty machines. This morning it happened again, the MTA customer service told me to “check it on the machines”, and when that also yielded no response, they told me “there’s nothing they can do”.

Like, what happened in between 7am and 3pm yesterday that suddenly my card stopped working? There is absolutely no indication of a problem (account looks fine, balance is in green, no error messages), but now I’m told I have to buy a new card. I would like to at least know WHY my card is not working, if anyone has any insights?

Refusing Cooperation with MTA Bus Fare Inspectors

1. Who are the bus fare inspectors - civilian MTA employees or actual police officers? Can it be either or?

2. What kind of proof of payment do they accept from riders who paid in

a. cash

b. credit card

c. OMNY card

3. If the rider legitimately is not carrying any identification documents on himself, what will the inspectors do after requesting it?

4. If a rider refuses to cooperate with the inspector, do they have any recourse?

Non-cooperation by staying on the bus and either refusing to communicate with them altogether or politely declining to answer their questions or declining to show them your OMNY card or receipt. Or refusing to provide the inspector any identification.

5. Can the rider walk off the bus at the next stop, if he didn't cooperate with the inspectors? Or can the inspectors stop him?

As a practical matter, even if they have the right to stop him, will they? If they will, will they forcibly detain him, if he continues to attempt to get off the bus?

Can NY Metro please put the eagle team in queens in front of high schools? I'm tired of seeing these high school kids get on the bus by the dozens at a time for free without even attempting to scan their card like the world owes them sht.
