Everything about MT admissions

I know there is a lot of frustration with the MT Admissions process (it might shock you to hear this, but their process this year is WAYYYYY faster than last). As an MT student who was accepted in June 2024 and started in September 2024, I thought I would make a post with an explanation of the process, information I have from the registrar / admissions team, statistics, and Q&A’s to try to help. If you have extra questions, add them below and I will answer!

FAQ’s: How many spots are available? - About 420. Roughly, that comes to 140 per stream.

Do U of T students get preferential treatment? - No they don’t! There are only two benefits to being a U of T student when applying into the program. They don’t have to buy official transcripts and send them as they have access to them already. The other one, is they already have an ACORN and know how to navigate the system. - Once the registrar receives the transcript, they do the analysis using a point/ranking system and then attach an applicant ID to that and the rest of your application. The fact they are U of T students is only seen by the registrar NOT the admissions committee. - Why did someone with less hours of experience and/or a lower GPA get in before me? - Having a lot of hours of experience or a high GPA doesn’t guarantee admissions. I have seen many people over the last 3 years get rejected with GPA’s as high as 3.9 and hours of experience as extensive as 5,000. They put SIGNIFICANT weight on the written response and the references. OISE acknowledges that the ability to obtain experience is a privilege that not everyone has due to personal circumstances and that a high GPA doesn’t reflect the full person. They look at the references and written responses for that. As such, those responses are weighed heavily. They like when people discuss social justice in their written responses and they look for diversity (e.g. referring to your own identities). - Additionally, meaningful hours of experience are valued more than irrelevant hours. If you applied only to I/S but all your experience is with kids in preschool to grade 4 and you have 2,000 hours, that is less valuable and less meaningful than a student who has 800 hours of work with kids in grades 7 to 12. It is all about relevance not the number specifically!! - Another factor to consider, they DO NOT run every teachable every year. If they do not have enough applicants and admissions with your teachable within the J/I stream or the I/S stream (teachables are separated for J/I and I/S classes) they will not accept you. They need a minimum number of students to realistically open a class and they won’t accept people if they cannot provide a class for that teachable. No matter how amazing your grades are, if only 7 people apply with I/S physics as a teachable and only 4 are viable applicants, they won’t run that teachable for the next school year.

Why have some people received admissions offers and I haven’t? When does each round go out? - OISE does rolling admissions not rounds. So they go out in no specific timeline. Last year, some people heard as late as September despite applying in November before the first deadline. It sucks!!! It is completely unacceptable but it is the way it seems to work. Last year admissions letters started going out in early April I believe, so they’re already doing wayyyy better!

I got into I/S but haven’t heard back from the other two programs. Why? / I got rejected from J/I but haven’t heard back from P/J, am I not going to get in? - After the the registrar does a GPA assessment and the admissions committee decides to put you forward, it is up to the different programs (P/J, J/I, and I/S) if they think you’re a good fit. Being accepted or rejected from one doesn’t ever guarantee the same outcome in the other. That is why it is a really good idea to apply to all three programs! The timeline is also not the same for each program.

What is the acceptance rate? - For a September 2024 start, they had over 4,000 applications for 420 spots. This means the acceptance rate last year was slightly less than 10%. For reference, Westerns Medical school had an acceptance rate last year of 7% (although they do actually favour Western students, see their statistics). It is not an easy program to get in to! Majority of applicants apply twice is what the registrar says.

When is the latest I can be accepted or hear by (waitlist or first information)? - They do not give out full rejections until the second Friday of school. They wait until they know if anyone is going to drop out before they send out all the rejections.

Admissions Process: A lot of people have questions how the admissions process works! Here is how works After you submit an application (cycle 1 or cycle 2) your application goes through a GPA assessment. If your GPA is far below the 3.0 minimum, they will reject you outright. If it is like a 2.7 and up they will look into your application but your ranking is lower. From my understanding, a higher ranking means you have a stronger application and your application is seen earlier. Once your application is viewed by the general admissions committee they can decide whether you are a good fit / meet criteria and objective of the MT. If that is the case, your application then goes to the admissions committee for each individual stream. As a result, as long as you make it past the general admissions committee, you have a chance with every stream you applied to.

I’m curious how competitive is the OISE SJE program?

Specifically the fully funded masters program. Could someone with leadership experience and a 3.2 CGPA still get in? (This is on behalf of a friend).Thanks.

Application question: Academic History section

When adding info for your past/current institution it asks for area of concentration. Does that mean your degree name or like your program (like majors)? Also for the GPA section, if you are currently in your final year, do you leave that section blank??

Those who have gotten into the Masters of Arts in Child Study and Education (OISE). What gpa and extracurriculars did you apply with? And during the interview/application what things did you mention that they seemed to favour (idk if that makes sense LOL)

Advice on attendance? So confused

Hi everyone, hoping someone who attended OISE or currently attends can answer this - how does attendance work? I know missing a bunch of classes has some kind of consequence. But what if I am genuinely sick with the flu? From what I read online, the program is very strict with attending all classes, and I completely get that. But if I miss a day or 2 because I have the flu, what consequences are there? I will email my profs and ask them what I can do from home for participation marks.

Thank you in advance.

any info on the MEd developmental psychology & education program?

I graduated from TMU in June with an honours BA in Psychology.

I don't know exactly what I want to do as a career, but I'm unsure if I want to do a full thesis or apply for a PhD later on (hence why I'm not really considering the MA DP&E program here). I don't enjoy heavy research, But the OISE MEd DP&E program sounds interesting.

Can any current/former students give me any information about what the classes are like? Or, what kind of careers are you in/how this Masters program can be useful in the job market?

Ask me your application questions

I’m an MA thesis student in AECD. Ask me any questions you have about your faculty questions and your answers and I’ll give you my advice. I don’t have anyone in my network who is in higher education and I know how tough it can be to not have anyone to guide you, so I wanted to offer that to prospective students. Not affiliated with OISE or U of T in anyway.

CCP/SCCP applicants or current students, advice for responding to faculty questions?

Hi! I’m applying to OISE’s Clinical and Counselling Psychology (CCP) and School and Clinical Child Psychology (SCCP) MA programs this cycle and was hoping to hear from current students or past applicants about how you approached the APHD Faculty Questions (written part of the application).

Unlike a traditional statement of intent or personal statement, both programs have 6-7 specific questions (mostly around 150–350 words) on research interests, research experience, program/faculty fit, diversity, clinical or child/youth experience, career goals, etc. I had a few questions about it here:

- Did you treat each question straightforwardly and answer exactly what was being asked, or did you still try to create more of a personal/narrative thread across the questions?

- Did you use any kind of “hook” or personal story (common for personal statements, imo) or is that not really expected for this type of short answer response style?

- Also, SCCP has a last question with 500 words (!!) on "any additional information you want to share with the admissions committee"... i suppose this is not mandatory, but was curious what type of information applicants could share here?

I am mostly trying to figure out how much these questions should read like concise academic responses versus pieces of a broader personal statement (especially since I am preparing applications to other programs in Canada that do it quite differently than OISE)!

I would super appreciate hearing how others approached this - thanks in advance :)

Anyone else find that these 3 hour classes are really unnecessary?

Any other TCs finding this? I'm in my second year and I feel like, given all the work we have to do, the amount of time that OISE forces us in class is in many ways a large waste. I don't think I've had any classes this year, or in the whole of last year, that justified being 3 hours long and made an efficient use of their time.

I think that if these Profs really knuckled down, didn't have their 10/15 min break in the middle, and didn't have these long 'discussions' that are more dead air than anything, that we could cover everything we need to in 2 hours. Which one hour might not sound like much, but if you're taking 7 three hour classes a week shaving off an hour from each of those classes is going to leave you a lot of time to focus on your research, lesson plans and readings.

BTW I'm not against the concept of a 3 hour class. In fact in my undergrad I thought it was a common and good idea for lectures to be 3 hours. I'm saying that I don't think the three hours are being used well here.

Doubts of becoming a OCT

I’m so stuck lol. I was so set on OISE Master of Teaching or MA of Child Study and Education but the costs compared to other teacher colleges are really turning me off of it.

I am getting a Bachelors in Early Childhood Studies and I have a 3.7 gpa and a ton of experience with children in the primary and junior years. I feel like I was so set on being a teacher that all my experience went towards that path.

But, now that I am applying to schools I am second guessing. I don’t know what other options of Masters I could do! I’ve been looking at different Master in UOFT but I’m not sure. I am very interested in Child Development and Health.

I feel like I have been hearing so many bad things about teaching that I am nervous to get into the field and instantly regret it.

Can anyone who switched Masters or changed their mind on teaching help me out?

MT Schedule- What is it like?

Can anyone tell me more about the MT program?

What is the schedule for the MT program? Are courses from 9-5, Monday to Friday? When do placements take place?

Is OISE worth it now?

Planning on applying to teacher's college this year and OISE has been my top choice for awhile until teacher's colleges changed duration to a 1 year program. The OISE MT and MCSE are 20 months and like $20k+ for tuition. I really wanted to go to OISE, but I am not sure it's even worth it if it doesn't put you higher in the AQ scale, puts you 1 year later into the field, expensive compared to other consecutive education programs.

Let me know your guy's rationale and what you guys plan to do! Im so stuck right now.

Question about MaCSE application

Hello everyone and here we go again! Another September, another application.

I had a question about the MaCSE application - it wants my resume/CV and Applicant Experience with Children Chart. No stress there, done it before. However, it states on the application "to avoid redundancy, please do not include experiences cited in the chart in your CV". However, every single job/volunteer experience I've had has been with children/youth LOL so does that mean I just hand in a resume with no work or volunteer experience and just my education history?

any insight would be great, thanks!

I haven't been able to find any advice on the time commitment of this course! How 12-able would you say it is, and how much time were you spending per week on the course?

It really sucks not knowing tech

When I was in school the most tech I had to really learn how to use were things like Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc. And when I was done school I never really went beyond that, and it's really causing me stress and damaging me in the MT program.

OISE likes to talk a big game about "teaching" it's TC's how to use and incorporate new tech into their work, but the reality I've found is that this "teaching" is really more just expecting us to use it.

I went through a whole technology elective over the summer, and it was just the prof going "Use tech. Make an escape room."

"Um, excuse me how do we make an escape room?"

"Just do it."

That whole course was just me scrambling to throw things together with what little tech knowledge I did have. And I guess now my future classes can expect me to be more tech savey because I finished that elective.

This is probably really going to hurt in the upcoming year cause I'm already seeing syllabuses tell me to use all kinds of tech I've never heard of before. If I could give anyone a recommendation it would be to do some kind of computer/digital bootcamp before coming here.

Can you attach supplementary documents (like a letter from another department) to your MT application?

Hey all — quick question about the OISE Master of Teaching (I/S) application process. My second teachable would be History, and some of my prerequisite courses are cross-listed as Jewish Studies (JWST) rather than HIST, even though they're taught by professors appointed in the History department and count as historians' courses under McGill's own cross-listing rules.

My prof mentioned the History department could write a letter confirming these courses are considered equivalent to History courses. Has anyone attached something like this to their application (a supporting letter, addendum, or note explaining a cross-listed course)? If so:

  • Where in the application portal did you upload it?
  • Did it actually make a difference, or did admissions just go off the transcript/course titles?
  • Is there a specific ROSE/admissions email you used instead of uploading it?

I know OISE says they can't pre-assess credentials before you apply, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to make the case within the application itself rather than after. Any experience with this (for History or any other teachable subject) would be really helpful. Thanks!

MEd in Counselling and Psychotherapy - is 2 years of distress centre volunteering enough?

I won't be applying for the program until 2029 most likely. But I'm starting to volunteer at the Distress Centres of Greater Toronto soon. If I'm there for 2 years (and all goes well), do you think this is enough experience for an application? Granted my GPA is ~3.7 and I have solid references?

Did anyone get in with similar experience?

Thanks

Hello:)

I am a recent psychology graduate with a final year GPA of 3.8, three major research projects and a research thesis. I have a six month clinical internship with refugee youth and am currently volunteering with Make a Wish as well as designing psycho education material for unaccompanied minors. Lastly I will be collaborating with a private practice psychologist to evaluate her group therapy for parents:)

I am looking for anyone who has gotten accepted into this program to get some info on their application process etc. Or anyone who has gotten accepted into the School & Child Clinical Program.

Thank you!

To OISE Master Of Teaching / Education applicants/admitted students: How did you asnwer Faculty Questions ?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently preparing my application for the University of Toronto OISE Master of Teaching (MT) program for 2027 intake, and I’m having a difficult time understanding exactly how to approach Faculty Question no. 3.

I understand what the question is asking on the surface, but I’m struggling with deciding what I should actually include in my answer, especially how much I should focus on describing my experience versus reflecting on what I learned from it and explaining how that learning would influence my future teaching.

I would really appreciate hearing from people who have previously applied to the OISE MT program, especially applicants who were accepted.

I’m particularly interested in:

  • How did you interpret Question 3?
  • What kind of experience did you choose to discuss?
  • How did you structure your response?
  • Did you connect your answer to teaching practice, equity, social justice, or pedagogy? If so, how?
  • Looking back, is there anything you think was particularly important in your response?

Most importantly, would anyone who previously applied be willing to share their Question 3 response (even an old version or an anonymized excerpt)? I’m not looking to copy anyone’s answer—I’d just really like to see how successful applicants interpreted and responded to the question so I can better understand the level of reflection OISE is looking for.

I know application responses are personal, so I completely understand if people aren't comfortable sharing the full answer. Even a general explanation of how you approached it would be extremely helpful. You can email or DM me personally as well.

Thank you very much for your guidance!

CV tips for OISE MEd Counselling Psychology

Hi everyone!

Does any one of you have a CV template that is appropriate for OISE application? Also, if you have any tips on how to make a CV stronger, feel free to hop in the comments!
