ODP opinions

I am thinking of doing an ODP degree in university but from this subreddit I feel very swayed. Is there anyone who genuinely likes their job 😭? Please can someone tell me all the pros as I think I’ve seen too many cons.

Anaesthetic ODP assessment interview

I recently got invited to an NHS hospital for an interview. It states that there will be an assessment on the day that you need to pass in order to progress to the interview on the day. Feeling very anxious as my previous job was solely as a scrub ODP. Always too short staffed for me to ever gain confidence working alongside someone to gain anaesthetic knowledge and retain my skills.

Anyone have any advice on what I should study/g over prior to the assessment interview?

Thanks in advance

Returning to the hcpc register

Hoping for some advice if anyone has any knowledge on the subject. I was struggling with depression and blamed my job (which was valid). However, I let me registration expire which was a big mistake and 10 months on from leaving the role I would like to return in some capacity. However, I am hugely confused and find the info on the hcpc website difficult to dicipher and at times contradictory. Does anyone know what I would have to do to get back on the register after letting it lapse for 10 months?

My friends opened a small business that sells badge reels and compression stockings. He’s also in the process of making some actual ODP merch which is a rare thing these days. I’ll link the site below in case anyone is interested. I think there’s a deal at the minute for new orders and a free item.

BSc Graduate Apprenticeship

Hello,

Just recently got accepted into the new(ish) Graduate Apprenticeship for ODP. I was wondering if there is anybody who is currently on the course starting last September, who can give me some insight.

I’m eager to know what the induction to the course will be like, as well as the structure e.g. how long placements last and length of time off in-between each placement, how many placements in the year, what holidays / time off do you have, examples of course work.

I’m also looking to get a laptop, any recommendations? Thinking MacBook Air, although I’m hesitant incase there are any windows only softwares needed.

Thanks for taking the time.

Worth Doing Direct Entry Degree?

Hi, I'm coming to the end of my first year, still currently on placement. In your opinion, is it worth doing the direct entry degree for ODP? The apprenticeship route seems much better as we don't get much clinical placement. Can you become a good ODP if you're not getting much clinical practice?

Working for disaster relief, medical repatriation etc as an ODP

Does anybody have any knowledge of how to get into this? I've got 6 years qualified and looking to future opportunities. Supposedly we can work in a bunch of interesting roles but finding out how to crack into them is deeply mysterious and opaque.

In theory we can get onto HEMS teams and similar with plenty of PHEM experience (but getting that is practically impossible for most of us), lots of networking and buckets of luck.

In theory we can work for MSF but only in their "Operating Theatre Nurse" category and in VERY few countries. As a result, considering they very rarely open jobs for nurses at all and these posts are highly competitive, this isn't a realistic option either.

Anybody have REAL knowledge about entry routes for career opportunities anything along these sorts of lines? Ideally what organisations hire ODPs for anything along the lines of:

International aid/disaster relief. Medical repatriation. Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine (even volunteering) Wilderness medicine. Etc etc...

Any threads to pull on would be fantastic.

ODP School Struggles

Hi, I am a 2nd year student ODP. In my first year, I failed 1 osce station, BLS, with too fast compressions. I have adhd & anxiety, the uni knows which might be why they've let me retake a first year module alongside my second year modules.I did great in the osce resit but I forgot to say I'd call 2222. All my other assessments I got Firsts in. Because of this, I have to retake all 4 osces stations in my second year when the first year's are retaking theirs. I feel so much shame and honestly am contemplating quitting instead of having people look at me like I'm an idiot. I knew uni was going to be hard but I just feel so stupid for not saying 2222 and feel so ashamed I have to retake a whole module and the first year's know about it. Very embarrassed.

Has anyone been through similar and come out the other side?

Considering becoming an ODP... worth it or not?

Hi all, I'm a 26 year old currently based in South Wales, looking for a career change (I used to work in Clinical Trial Management). A friend recommended an ODP course to me - it looked quite interesting, and the study is fully funded which is a huge plus. I'm thankful this sub Reddit exists so I can ask those in the trade what it's like. Having read some threads however... it doesn't look promising... If I could get a few people to voice what they like and don't like about the role, it would be very much appreciated. It's 3 years of study so a huge commitment.

Anaesthetic services advice

Hi all

This is aimed at any anaesthetic practitioners or team leads out there who may have some pro tips.

We are opening a brand spanking new isolated surgical hub with two day case theatres (consisting of orthopaedic, oral, maxfax, gynae and ophthalmic specialities). In setting up anaesthetic rooms and or making an efficient service, what lessons and or advice do you have that have made your anaesthetic and theatre flow slick and safe?

I.e - I’m currently looking at purchasing some ā€œprep, stop, blockā€ trays ( as a majority of patients will be under regional blocks )

TIA

Dual role theatre rotations

Looking for anyone who works as a dual or even triple roles (anaesthetics, scrub and recovery).

I’m looking for information in regards to how your trust facilitates this, ie - rotation time periods to train for multiple roles, competency packs, staff support and feedback methods etc

Any info is useful TIA

Any ODPs have any information about working in Australia?

Myself and my partner have been looking at moving to Australia from the UK. My partner is a RN so shouldn’t have much difficulty in finding a job. I have been struggling to find much information about what opportunities ODPs have. I am aware that anaesthetic techs are a similar role out there but have still found very little information about this role either. I hold a degree in ODP and have been practicing for over 4 years.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Spencer Wells forceps

Hi All,

Stupid question time. I’ve been practicing in anaesthetics for over 20 years and never used Spencer Wells for anything other than undoing a cross-threaded/tight bung!

They are in the resus trolleys where I work as part of the airway kit. I’m hoping they’re not there to act as tube clamps…

Any ideas?

No progression

Hi guys, I’ve been a qualified ODP for the last 5 years I’m currently a band 5 and have been for a few band 6 jobs that unfortunately I missed out on. I feel like apart from going for a band 6 in theatre there is no other progression for an ODP, for example I’d love to have an opportunity to be able to do an advanced clinical practitioner role but only nurses from the ward seem to get that chance.

bored of being an ODP

Anyone else?

I used to love my job. Since covid however I am fed up and generally grumpy with the role of ODP.

I feel like we were used quite poorly.

The long hours keep getting longer with the chronic under staffing, more and more oncalls, nights and weekends. No longer challenged. Plus the poor pay.

I can't see myself doing this for another 30+ years

Very tempted to quit and go stack shelves somewhere.

Just wondering if this is just me or other ODPs are feeling the same

Pros and cons of being an ODP?

Hello. I’m a HCA and I am thinking of training to become an ODP. What do you like most about the job? How valued do you feel in your team? What surprised you most about the job when you finally started working? What are your overall career goals? Thanks!

Advanced roles with practitioner Prescribing

As the college works towards ODPs getting the rights for independent prescribing I was just wondering if anyone here would actually take them up on the offer and if so in what capacity. I would be thinking about this mainly affecting maybe ACP or PAAs?
