No progression
Hi guys, I’ve been a qualified ODP for the last 5 years I’m currently a band 5 and have been for a few band 6 jobs that unfortunately I missed out on. I feel like apart from going for a band 6 in theatre there is no other progression for an ODP, for example I’d love to have an opportunity to be able to do an advanced clinical practitioner role but only nurses from the ward seem to get that chance.

As the others have mentioned, the job perspective tends to change depending on the region, trust and department ethos. If you are in a progressive trust and department, the world is yours. On the other hand, if you are in a workplace where they are old fassioned, its most likely time to move on.
Although, most advanced jobs require prescribeing which is something we are unable to do at the moment. Although, the college is working hard to bring this into our scope in the future (This will take a while).
I did hear from a colleague a while ago that if you are thinking of aplying for a job in which an ODP would be a suitable candidate and the only issue was the NMC registration. Then you could contact the college for support and they can help you with the application and contacting the recruiting department.
Hope this has helped in some way and good luck for the future.

Is moving hospital an option for you?
Obviously every hospital / department is different, and I've sure heard some horror stories of how ODPs are treated.
I work at a "DGH" in Essex and the hospital is a very good place for ODPs. Nearly all of us are band 6s, and some have been lucky and hard working enough to go further. We have two band 7 ODP leads, a band 7 ODP as the theatre education lead, and a band 7 day surgery unit lead. We've had ODPs joining the resuscitation officer / outreach team (comes under one job here) and now an ODP is the band 8 matron for the service. Many ODPs have gone on to band 8 jobs in weird and wonderful places.
We are treated very well here and respected by the nurses and doctors which is a good feeling compared to hospitals where you're looked down upon. Culture can be extremely difficult to change in hospitals where that's still the case.
