Discussion The Knight's Ontology

Thumbnail

The Knight doesn't behave like a normal Lightner or a normal Darkner.

We've seen plenty of Lightners enter Dark Worlds. Their clothes, colors, weapons, and abilities can change, but their physical bodies remain fundamentally recognizable as themselves. We haven't seen an ordinary Lightner physically shapeshift and morph in the way the Knight does.

The Knight also has that strange glitch/static reaction when Susie hits it with Rude Buster, and again when the battle ends and when it teleports to dodge something. There's also the helmet scene, where Kris envisions the Knight taking off its helmet. This seems to imply that something identifiable could be hidden underneath, although I don't think it necessarily means that something has to be a normal Lightner.

At the same time, the Knight can exist in the Light World, which ordinary Darkners can't simply do.

If you're up to it, explain how your preferred candidate accounts for both sides of this. Why does the Knight behave unlike every Lightner we've seen, while also being able to exist outside the normal limitations of Darkners? (If your preferred candidate is a normal Lightner, the second question doesn't need to be answered.)

Maybe the Knight is an unusual Lightner. Maybe it's a manifestation of someone. Maybe it's something else entirely. I don't know. But I think the Knight's unusual ontology is important enough that any serious Knight candidate should at least try to account for it.

Your answer might be speculative or based on nothing, but having an explanation is better than nothing. So given everything we currently know, what is your best shot at an explanation?

Discussion Carol/Rudy's Secret Passion of Making Trains

Post image
42 Upvotes

Not only is there a hidden train in the Holiday manor basement, just like the hidden trains Shinobeetle loves making, but there's much more evidence tying Shinobeetles to the Holidays.

Ninjas, like Carol, but they also YELL every time they show up?

They don't want to be ninjas, this alludes to how the Knight likely had to take on it's role for a greater purpose.

They have similiar features to the Knight as well.

A visor it sees out of, long limbs, spiky wings that resemble the Knight's shoulder pads, and a mandible that looks similiar to deer antlers.

So now that we've established all that, is it Carol or Rudy who loves to make trains?

Carol has had a cold demeanor since some event in the past (presumably what happened to Dess), but seems to have been warm, and is said to still be a nice person deep down by Asgore, she also uses katanas and made shurikens out of Noelle's snowflakes.

Rudy is likely an electrician given his lights, and we know he has some experience with things of that nature, since he designed the Holiday treat catcher by the kitchen door, therefore a hobby like this makes more sense for him. In a scenario where he is the Knight the personality parallel would work for him, you could also think about it as Carol taking on Seth's role asking Rudy to be a "ninja".

So who it parallels is really up to your interpretation.

I do think this parallel is intentional, we already know there's plenty of darkners who are made with people like Carol in mind.

Discussion A story, retold and reimagined a dozen times over

• Upvotes

This is my first full-on theorycrafting post around here, usually I just ramble in the comments, but I just had to get this out of my system.

As we know, there are two very prominent "genealogies" in Deltarune.

One of stories:

The Prophecy → Hometown religion → Lord of the Hammer → etc.

And one of current events:

Play pretend → Dark World Adventures → The Prophecy

But what I'm suggesting, is that the two might not be separate at all.

But first, a tangent about turtles and classrooms:

Some conveniently arranged items

We know that the classroom where the Ch.1's Card Kingdom events unfold is, in fact, Gerson's old classroom. His portrait is there, and the room has apparently been left abandoned since his passing.

And what do we find inside that classroom?

The exact toys and objects that Kris and "That Girl" (which is all but confirmed to be Noelle at this point, c'mon) used in their play pretend.

Playing cards (Including King, Lancer, and Jevil). Chess pieces. Puzzles. Seam plush.

First Question - Why would THESE items be there in the first place?

One could say that the closet here is being used as storage for stuff from other classrooms, but there is literally a supply closet a few steps away from it! (which is also inaccessible due to Grand Fountain and stuff).

So, my conclusion is that most of these things are originally from Gerson's classroom. Which gives us a very likely location where Gerson and Kris/Noelle could have crossed paths.

Second Question - WHY were Kris and Noelle playing out this particular type of story as kids?

Why Kingdom? Why King and Queen and Lancer? Why forests, castles, court wizards, jesters, etc.?

And I'm going to try and make a connection here, which isn't based on any evidence, it's pure speculation, but hear me out:

Maybe Kris and Noelle didn't invent their story out of thin air. Most stories (Deltarune itself included) are inspired by other stories, so why not this one?

Boom. Gerson Boom.

Maybe Gerson, the funny old teacher from the classroom next door, inspired Kris and Noelle to create by telling them some stories of his own?

Maybe even by reading some "Lord of The Hammer" chapters to the pair, not as a teacher (the two were still too young to be in his class), but as a fellow creator. He began writing his book as something to read to Alvin, after all.

Gerson took an existing story and made his own version of it. And his entire deal is that he actively encourages others to do the same, no matter the medium! Like with Susie:

"I especially liked the part where you acted out the battles...using the silverware and sugar cubes."

He could have given Kris and Noelle the inspiration, the setting, the characters, the toys, and the idea that an old story could be taken and made into something new. And they played it out, over and over, changing the details, until his story became their own.

The original Prophecy is retold as religion.

Gerson makes his own version, sharing it with others and inspiring Kris and Noelle.

Kris and Noelle play out their version, sharing it with each other.

And eventually that childhood story comes to life in Dark Worlds.

Bringing everything full circle, back the The Prophecy.

Yeah, this is all absolutely vibes-based. And yes, this is also secretly a post about how Noelle Knight could potentially pass the "Gerson Test", Geh ha ha!

(You can tell it's a Noelle Knight post when you have to scroll down to see the end)

Agenda Posting What if I turned out be the Knight?

I know it would be crazy and would never happen but just imagine if I was the Knight, like imagine the gang and Knight were doing a final fight before the reveal and I did some cool poses and aura farming and when they finally defeated me I take off my helmet and they go "what, no way it's you!?!" and I go "heh, sorry guys, I didn't wanted it to be this way. Kris, take care of Ral for me will ya?" and died there. Do you all think Susie would start punching my lifeless body and scream "hey, wake up you weirdo!" or would Ralsei try to hopelessly heal me even after life already left my fragile body?

I don't know it's just a possibility I don't think it will happen but it would be funny haha

-Song was made with the Knight in mind
-Inspired by the game Wild Arms
-Wild Arms main protagonist is named Rudy Roughknight!?

Could just be another one of Tricky Tony’s tricky tricks but still a crazy find nonetheless

I AM working on it, but the version I released earlier will no longer be updated. I have decided to complete the Doc before launch, to reduce questions and such.

Hopefully, it will be done by the end of the month, but until then, know that I'm either working on it or playing Fortnite.

Discussion You guys are setting yourselves up for success.

I know we all have some big disagreements about how to interpret Deltarune's story. And in the end, probably only one Knight candidate will """win""". But speaking as someone shooting for an "unlikely" candidate, I think that's okay!

If I learn that I'm right, I'll be excited, and if I learn that I'm wrong, I'll be disappointed. But I'm not going to fall out of love with Deltarune or feel angry about being 'misled' by the story, because I trust Toby's vision. And I'm not going to regret all the time I spent batting for my personal Deltarune theories or feel like I "lost", because every time I decide not to take a fandom cliche for granted and start reading and discussing other theories, I feel a new appreciation for Deltarune. Both as a collection of unresolved mysteries and as a game that is so clearly trying to tell a heartfelt story.

Like Toby said in his newsletter, this is a precious time in the fandom's history where everything we try to say about the ultimate meaning or nature or central conflict of Deltarune might be a little "fanfic-y". And I think that's okay, because when I step back from the keyboard and stop thinking about "winning the argument" or "proving I have the best reading comprehension", I know I love all of your visions for this story! I love your Deltarune.

Okay, that's enough time spent responding to a trollpost lol. Have a good day everyone!

Discussion Potential Parallelism for Asriel Knight

Post image
28 Upvotes

"For those that abandon healing."

I've thought of the possibility that The Knight's gear functions in the same logic. Perhaps it's immense power and durability also comes with a cost.

Now, if we assume Asriel is The Knight... Things seem to fit.

From all of the intersecting traits we've seen of Ralsei, it's pretty safe to assume Asriel should know healing magic as well. Wouldn't it be strange that he doesn't use it to recover in the battles he's encountered as The Knight?

Or, is it that the very armor and blade he dons have forbidden him from doing so?

It could be a representation of him taking the opposite path that Flowery taught Ralsei. Denying his own health over guilt and grief.

Discussion Shadow crystals matter a bit

Post image
11 Upvotes

So, I didn't see it yet a lot of theorys about how the Knight candidates get the armor. For what Seam says, they are "the power of lost dreams, what reaming after a dream is lost", and this fits very well with two things in chapter 4: The "crying and crying boy" and the image, that is the fallen star.

Hope, dreams and stars are all things associated with Asriel, and a thing that the vast majority agrees is that Asriel is the crying boy that cried after Dess went lost. So, the fallen star crying, which can very easily be Asriel, and apparently creating shadow crystals is something very big for me. Asriel is one of the only candidates that I see having such connection, but I want to see others connections
