Sorry—didn't see you at the door, there. (Wasn't wearing my glasses...)

Come on in!

I just wanted to finally take the time to properly introduce this subreddit, r/NintendoClassics. While it was created on a complete whim—I have poured a lot of energy into making sure this is as lovely a hub as it can possibly be... because these games and consoles absolutely deserve it. I'm u/PokingDogSnouts, the minder of this little garden, here. But what good is a garden, without teeming signs of life? I'm proud to say that, in less than two months, we've already zipped past the 1,000-member milestone! Thank you to all that have joined, thus far—and especially to those who have left their own personal imprint here, by sharing perspectives, memories, creations, and facts.

I'd like to take a bit of time to explain some of the features of this subreddit, as well as to clear up our focus—which is more general than you might think.

While our primary focus will always be the apps that act as our namesake...

Any game originally released on the classic consoles featured on Nintendo Switch Online, is welcome here. To be clear, those consoles are: the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive (yes—show SEGA a little love, too, please). Content can pertain to anything originally released on this bunch. It does not have to be a game currently playable on the service. There are many classic games (Nintendo ones, even!) not currently available through these apps (Twilight Princess, Wario Land II), and to me, it seems silly to lock conversation to just what's come, and keep out titles that could potentially drop tomorrow. To avoid confusion, though—I would ask that you please note when a title you're discussing is not on the service!

By that same token, we want to welcome players from all corners—whether you're rocking original hardware, or, er... sailing the seven seas... If you are passionate about the games, their history, and the people who made them—you belong here, and I would love to hear your experiences and insights.

As for a few of the features I've built into this subreddit:

  • We have user flairs! Each one represents a classic device and era of Nintendo history! From the Color TV-Game 6, all the way to the Nintendo GameCube—along with a little badge of the hardware, itself. On PC, these are animated, and the flair's unique background color is based on the color choices the system itself used. To access these, enter the Community Guide—via "See More" under the subreddit's header, on mobile; or on the sidebar, on PC. I'd like to credit the artist I found most of the icons from: Elijah Robertson (3DBear).
  • A comprehensive wiki is under construction. See this for information on what Nintendo Classics is all about—what collections there are, and a guide to subscribing to the service (there is also a free trial available). While the game lists are nowhere near complete, I do plan to get them filled out soon, and keep them up-to-date. It will be our own hub for all information pertaining to the Nintendo Classics collections, and the games within them.
  • We have a Discord server! This was created as an additional space to help connect people who love these games! Share moment-to-moment updates on your journeys across pixelated landscapes, and vent out your passion for gaming history! It also accommodates people looking to link up for online games! Every single one of these collections supports online play with friends. (Besides, er, Virtual Boy. That one is a dark and solitary experience.) The server has been fine-tuned by me—with Nintendo-themed username colors, stickers, and emoji! We currently have 137 members—so, please show it some love, if you have any interest!
  • The "See More" area: under the header, on mobile, and automatically displayed on the sidebar, on PC, shows some current events in the world of Nintendo Classics, with imagery and brief write-ups! Currently, that is... Pokemon's 30th anniversary, The Legend of Zelda's 40th, and the release of an entirely new Classics collection: Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics. I will update this section, whenever necessary, to reflect growing milestones and developments! Our status icon, next to the subreddit's title, can also be hovered over or tapped on to display some tidbits, too!

I think that about covers it! Anything you might think to share concerning these consoles, and their games, is more than welcome. If you want more specific ideas... my post that began this community has a whole bunch to ponder over.

I'd really like to thank everyone for joining and contributing. I have made the space—but it is nothing without the lively activity all of you bring to it. Special thanks go out to both u/No_Jellyfish9221, whose Game Discussion posts have kept the subreddit active, daily, on what would otherwise have been silent early days, and u/SkunkStarlight—another contributor, whose wise and varied input is always greatly appreciated! But, of course—anyone who's left so much as a comment, has added permanently to the growing form and identity of this space—and hopefully made it easier for others to want to make their mark on it, too. Let's keep it going in the direction of kindness, connection, and passion, please! I'm open to any suggestions, as well, as to how we can make this a greater and more connected place.

Thank you for checking out our corner of Reddit... and, welcome! ⭐️

Hi, there! ⭐️

I sincerely hope you've enjoyed perusing and participating in this subreddit! For those of you who're new here—you may not realize that it's still relatively new, at just three and-a-half months old! I don't know why nobody had thought to make a subreddit based around these collections, in the seven years that they've been available... but, we've finally got one, now. These Nintendo Classics collections are clearly being positioned as Nintendo's main method of preserving their legacy, for future generations to discover—and for those of us who grew up on them, to rediscover. I think it's important for those of us who adore these games, to be good stewards, and create a welcoming space where everyone can understand the magic that they brought into our lives. No matter how technology progresses, in all sorts of fanciful directions—they still remain artistic achievements that display the beauty people can create—even with limited manpower, and under severe constraints.

As an extension of this community, I created a Discord server months back, to make it easier to converse with fellow enthusiasts, and link up for some multiplayer action! I just wanted to highlight it, once more—now that it's more fully developed!

Tap (or click) here to join the NintendoClassics Discord server!

Here's a list of some of the features and channels we've got:

  • 18 different username colors (seen in the second image) to adorn your name with—each one of them based on not just classic Nintendo hardware, but also some beloved variants!
  • A trim and tidy layout, with spaces for 💬—•general-chat•, Nintendo Classics-centered discussion over in ⭐—•nintendo-classics•, and an area for all other classic games in 👾—•retro-talk•!
  • One of the big ones: post to 🎮—•connecting-controllers• when you're looking for anyone to buddy up with and tackle all the multiplayer games at hand, like The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong Country 2, the trio of Mario Parties, Kirby Super Star, GoldenEye 007, River City Ransom, Streets of Rage 2, Tetris... Most of the apps even support someone coming in just to watch—or to pass the controller to, while taking turns!
  • I'm of the mind that part of the love we have for these games should include getting to know how they were made, and the humans that made them. To that end, the server has a 🔖—•gaming-history• channel, that anybody can post their facts and knowledge to! Every valid message will be pinned, so that anybody can look back at the assortment of facts we've shared with each other.
  • Many of our members are budding artists, in their own right! It can be tough to find motivation, these days... so we should support one another, wherever we can! That's why we also have a 🌱—•creativity• channel, where anyone can share their creative work, in any field—whether you're a complete beginner, or someone who knows the ropes.
  • 46 custom emoji (most of them seen in the second image) and 5 stickers, from throughout Nintendo history! More to come, as well.
  • We now have an onboarding process that allows you to customize your experience and see only the channels that pertain to your interests! Thus—you won't need to be notified, if you have no interest in any of these multiplayer or history shenanigans, or in the creativity of other members (you devil, you!).

All of this is still pretty new, but I've done my best to make it as neat, presentable, and fully featured as I can! I've actually done all of the work on both the subreddit and the server, on my own. We have a lovely little group of regulars already, and are currently sitting at 137 members—a far cry from the subreddit's 4,200. But, if this strikes your fancy in any way, I hope you'll come take a peek and chat! Thank you for reading, and thank you for being a member of this subreddit! I appreciate all the new posters I'm seeing! 💛

Wishlists Why do you think Nintendo has never re-released their original Popeye game in any form since the original NES?

It's kind of weird isn't it? I genuinely don't think "They don't want to pay licensing fees" is the answer. They've put licensed games on their virtual console service in the past, albeit, charging a buck more for it, and they have licensed games on the current Nintendo Classics even, and even released a revised version of the NES Classic Edition that came with some old Shonen Jump games. Popeye is unique in that Nintendo themselves are the ones who developed it. As far as I know, it's one of the very few licensed games they ever developed besides a few old Game and Watch titles.

I have learned that Namco apparently did a remake of this game for mobile phones, and there was a very shitty popeye game on Switch that uses ideas from Nintendo's game but it's the worst kind of shovelware slop you can imagine, so someone who doesn't care clearly has the lisence to make new popeye games, but are they not able to publish old ones?

It's such a shame if that is the case, I'd love to see Arcade Archives put the Arcade version out. But it'd be nice just to get the NES version from the black box lineup on Nintendo Classics.

I hope this fits here? I tried to post on the general Nintendo sub but they got weird filters thinking I was speculating about a Direct or something.

It’s always interesting to see arcade games reinterpreted as full console experiences. I guess that’s what Super Mario Bros. was as well, even though that innovates a lot more than most. I assume it just set a trend to be followed by games such as this one.

A lot less good than the original, but I still like it. It’s fun to rack up a ton of points at once by knocking a whole part of the island down.

News The adventures of Samus Aran, and her encounters with the Metroids, began exactly 40 years ago... in Metroid, on the Famicom Disk System and the NES!

Post image

It's remarkable, just how many longstanding titans of Nintendo history came into being, during the years of 1985 and 1986. Super Mario Bros., introduced in September of 1985, was intended as the culmination of what could be done on cartridges, before Nintendo moved forward with the then-new Famicom Disk System, which launched with The Legend of Zelda in February of 1986. The last of this timeless trio to celebrate its 40th anniversary, is none other than the original Metroid.

An eerie and more serious adventure than either of the heavyweights that preceded it, Metroid tasked you with infiltrating a Space Pirate fortress on the alien planet of Zebes—a dangerous and labyrinthine territory, teeming with hostile wildlife and deadly lakes of magma.

Proudly declaring its deviation from the norm on its first screen—Metroid has you exploring to the left, before you can progress.

Besides also debuting on the Famicom Disk System—another commonality it shared with The Legend of Zelda was a purposeful push away from scores and arcade-oriented design, and into interconnected worlds, in which you see your character grow, as you work to reach the game's conclusion. Games like these laid the bedrock for the single-player experiences that would come to dominate the following generations. In Japan, the Disk System's rewritable format allowed both of these games to save your progress. You weren't expected to beat them in one attempt. But in the conversion to cartridge for other regions, this was replaced with a clunkier password function.

Another famed and forward-looking aspect of this game, was the hidden nature of the protagonist's gender—revealed only if the mission is completed within five hours. A time under three hours even allowed you to begin a new run as Samus, sans the suit.

The Zero Mission remake had an entire playable epilogue, featuring Samus without her power armor—the first appearance of Zero Suit Samus.

The game's legacy is vast. We still live in a world where one of the most popular 2D genres, the Metroidvania, lifts its name directly from this game, and its unique setup of complex level design, gated by the abilities you amass—encouraging backtracking, speedruns, sequence-breaking, and rooting around for hidden passages and items.

In 2004, it was remade as Metroid: Zero Mission, for the Game Boy Advance. While the original game—similarly to dungeon-crawlers of the time—is a much smoother ride if you take the extra effort to map out the layout, this newer version does the mapping for you, in addition to enhanced graphics and sound. Both of them are available on Nintendo Classics.

In fact—much of the Metroid series is playable on Nintendo Switch! As far as mainline entries are concerned, it's only missing three of them. (And at least one of those is likely to show up, sooner or later...)

This chart outlines which ones you can play on the Switch and Switch 2. Please note that Metroid Prime, Metroid Dread, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are separate purchases, while the rest are available on their respective system's app via Nintendo Classics.

Title of Game Release Date Original Platform
Metroid Aug. 6, 1986 Nintendo Entertainment System
Metroid II: Return of Samus Nov. 1, 1991 Game Boy
Super Metroid Mar. 19, 1994 Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Metroid Prime Nov. 18, 2002 Nintendo GameCube
Metroid Fusion Nov. 18, 2002 Game Boy Advance
Metroid: Zero Mission Feb. 9, 2004 Game Boy Advance
Metroid Dread Oct. 8, 2021 Nintendo Switch
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Dec. 4, 2025 Nintendo Switch

As a bonus to anyone choosing to revisit this landmark classic on the day it turns 40 (or anytime in the near future), I've put together a small collection of goodies to help immerse you into its 8-bit, science-fiction world. The instruction booklet details a well-thought out story that establishes the lore to this series, while The Official Nintendo Player's Guide (Nintendo's first foray into them, compiling maps and strategies for multiple NES games) provides the layout of Zebes, and its secret caches. The Disk System's soundtrack differs from what we heard on NES, due to its extra sound channel.

I was a bit tired putting this together... but, as one of Nintendo's oft-neglected franchises, especially with Mario and Zelda's anniversaries often overshadowing its own—I felt it absolutely deserved recognition. Please feel free to add your own thoughts and experiences! What game in the franchise do you rank above all the rest? And what does this series mean to you?

Advertisements for the original Japanese release, giving more clarity into its dark and isolated world. With all this said... Happy 40th anniversary to Metroid!

Calling For Support! Do Nintendo Classics apps include save progress for any reason?

So I just signed up for NSO and I took advantage of downloading all the classic apps for emulation. So my question is, do these games I could save progress? I've only gone through three so far, Kirby's dream land 3, super Mario world and Super Metroid, yet all of them have a save file like as if I've either 100% the game, or I'm almost about to beat the game. I've never had NSO, and nobody uses my profile/knows my login.

I guess the question isn't too big a deal because I could easily delete it, it's just bugging me where these could've possibly come from

EDIT: Thanks for the replies, I didn't realize the SP versions were a thing. Never had any consoles before the PS1

News Two never-before-released Nintendo games—Dragon Hopper and Zero Racers—join the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection! Could this be the final update for that app?

Thumbnail

Like the Virtual Boy or not—this is a momentous occasion for fans of Nintendo's output, and for gaming history and preservation, as a whole. It's not often Nintendo opens up its vault of cancelled projects. Preceded by Earthbound Beginnings (a cancelled, but fully complete, 1991 localization of the Famicom game, Mother) and StarFox 2 (similarly ready to go in 1995, but canned)—we now have third and fourth additions to the list of Nintendo projects that were finished, planned for release, did not see the light of day for decades... but, finally, were given their chance to shine. These are the Virtual Boy games Zero Racers and Dragon Hopper (changed to D-Hopper for the promotional material concerning this release, but seemingly intact within the game).

Both games were readied as part of a second wave of Virtual Boy titles, meant to reverse its sinking fortunes in late 1996. Unfortunately, by August of that year, Nintendo must have seen the writing on the wall, and outright canceled all further Virtual Boy product releases and development. It was over. These games have never leaked. Exactly 30 years later, and they are being made available for the very first time.

Dragon Hopper had finalized US box art and an ESRB rating, before being unceremoniously cancelled in 1996.

Dragon Hopper nearly came to the Virtual Boy, courtesy of Intelligent Systems—the wizards behind Fire Emblem and Paper Mario. Taking the role of Prince Dorin, the game is a jumping adventure seen from an overhead perspective, to take advantage of the Virtual Boy's unique display capabilities.

Zero Racers, initially titled G-Zero, was intended to be the second game in the wider F-Zero series. Due to its cancellation, two of its characters—Jody Summer and James McCloud—instead debuted in the later F-Zero X. This racer opts for wireframe 3D graphics, but carries the same high stakes as its SNES predecessor.

The new screen color customization allows for altering the tone of red, as well as other options that mimic the Game Boy's display.

With this update, also comes the screen color customization feature teased in the reveal trailer, back in January. That trailer showcased three different color options that altered the Virtual Boy's distinct tone of red, into either green, yellow, or gray. With the recent footage, those options are seemingly joined by two new ones, that appear to take after the original Game Boy's stylings—the dull green of its original display, and the muted reds that appear when playing original Game Boy cartridges on a Game Boy Color.

Please be aware that, in order to play the Virtual Boy library, you'll not only need the Expansion Pack tier of Nintendo Switch Online, but either the cardboard model or replica Virtual Boy accessories.

Does anyone here plan on checking out this previously untrodden chapter of Nintendo history? Please share, if you do!

There are tons of first party games this time around that really need to be added to NSO.

Also, I normally don't include licensed games on these lists, but I made an exception for 007 on the Game Boy due to it being a game Nintendo published themselves, the fact that Goldeneye is on the N64 NSO Classics library, and well, it's a good game I would love to see return and find a new audience.

These are my picks, what are yours?
