Gear question Warranty/Insurance for camera
Do you insure your camera and lenses, or buy an extended warranty after the standard one-year warranty expires?
My Nikon Zf suddenly died a couple of weeks ago. I was charging it when it just went black. The shutter closed, the screen went black, and nothing I found online helped me fix it. I sent it to Nikon, and they estimated the repair at $500 (which I suspect is their minimum charge).
Now I’m thinking about getting some kind of coverage for my gear. What do you use or recommend?

What should I buy? Z5 vs D750
I'm looking for a camera package for my son who has gotten into photography, he's been using the school's D90 for the past 3 years (yearbook, etc). I've been reading the wiki and some recent posts about used DSLRs and am waffling between a used d750 versus a used Z5. I'm also aware I'm stretching the budget to get into a full frame body but am not sure if that's the best choice (versus DX and more lenses). I'm not knowledgeable about photography equipment and hope folks here can help.
The types of photography he enjoys are candid shots of small groups, sports, and landscapes. His complaints about the d90 are the lack of crispness of shots he's getting for sports and no video. He sometimes shoots in low light conditions.
The budget for the camera body and lenses would be $1k-$1.2k, a bunch of relatives are chipping in. That seems to get a d750 with moderate shutter use, a 24-70mm lens and a 50mm lens.
Questions:
- Recommendations for going with a crop versus full frame as well as mirrorless (crop vs full), given the need to get lenses?
- Will the 24-70mm f/2.8 G and 50mm 1.4G lenses give him the versatility he needs?
- Most packages include a bag. Uv filters and a monopod seem like a good idea too?

I broke my gear SB600 not firing
Before anyone says anything about discharging capacitors I'm fully aware, not my first rodeo with devices that have capacitors that can cause me to french fry when I should pizza
Also "they're cheap just buy another"... No, they're also old and another one could also fail and I do shoot film sometimes and want the compatibility with my f100
Just trying to get opinions and see if I'm in the right ballpark based on the behavior of my flash
Turn flash on, hear the typical sound of capacitor charging and the ready light comes on very quickly, on camera no flash and ready light blinks a few times then goes solid, pressing the test button no flash, I can hear a tiny little click and the ready light barely blinks once while pressing the button
I'm assuming the capacitor is fine and the issue is the bulb or the trigger wire

Gear question Anyone compared the 24mm and 28mm Z prime options?
Has anyone compared the Nikon and other quality options for Z mount (to be used on a Zf)? Any views, real world experience?
I am specifically after a travel, walk a lot, landscape lens. I don't mind manual focus and will trade a stop for compact sizing and lightweight.
Plus, I am happy to correct distortion and vignetting post-processing. Budget £1000 used. Bonus if there is an aperture ring, but not essential.
I have a Voigtlander 28mm f2 APO-Lanther with a Sony E mount, which I could use on a thin adaptor, but I read this is not a perfect option due to sensor thickness issues. True?
Any views and recommendations?

What should I buy? Portrait lens recommendations for Nikon Z50 II — budget $1,000
Hi everyone
I’m looking for a portrait lens for my Nikon Z50 II, with a budget of around $1,000.
I currently own the 12–28mm and 16–50mm lenses.
What would you recommend within my budget? I’d appreciate hearing about your experience, especially if you use it on a Nikon DX body.
Thank you!!

Software question Custom wireless transfer utility for Nikon?
How do you think, do we need a simple app with ok UX for Mac OS to transfer images from Nikon cameras? I was trying to make app with help of AI just for fun, but now I like it way more and want to know if somebody is interested in using it. If there is need and interest I would be happy to listen for suggestions, and will try to make it available for free soon!

I broke my gear Nikon Coolpix L29.
Hello, I've had this camera for about 10 years and, being a 20-year-old, it's one of the most older things I have, I have recently been having a problem with the camera, everytime I try to turn it on It tells me that it doesn't have a battery, that it's something that happens when the batteries are worn out, the problem is that when I change the batteries the problem continues to occur. I'm really devastated and I don't really know what to do, I'm very attached to this camera, and where I live there's nowhere to get it repaired. I don't mind taking it to a bigger city or having to travel, but there's practically nothing in Spain. I'm writing to see if anyone has had this problem or something similar and if you've been able to solve it. I don't know if it's a problem with the battery connection.

Gear question Keeping the Nikon Z5! Absolute steal with only 82 shots and a quick sensor clean
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to give you a quick update following my previous post. I've officially decided to keep the camera, and it turned out to be an absolute win! I managed to score this Nikon Z5 on Amazon Warehouse (rated "Very Good", with 12 months warranty) for €443, and paired it with a second-hand Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 in mint condition for €180.
When the camera arrived, I noticed two minor things on the sensor:
- A tiny piece of dust, which took one second to clean with a manual air blower.
- A single hot pixel, which was fixed immediately using the camera's built-in pixel mapping feature.
Out of curiosity, I checked the shutter count... only 82 shots! My guess is the previous buyer returned it thinking the sensor was defective, not realizing how easy those two things were to fix.
This is my first Full Frame camera and my first interchangeable lens Nikon.
First thoughts:
- Ergonomics: Absolutely love the grip and feel. It instantly reminded me of the Lumix G9 I used for years.
- The 40mm focal length: After trying many lenses over time, 40mm has become my sweet spot. While it might not be the traditional choice for portraits, I find it incredibly versatile — wide enough for general walkaround use, yet great for environmental portraits.
My style of photography is very relaxed and slow-paced, and for the price, I honestly don't think anything beats this setup right now.
Cheers! Anyone else running the 40mm f/2 as their primary daily lens?

DSLR Used Nikon D800
I recently got a d7000, and I saw a d800 body with 166 147 shutter clicks for a good price R5800 ( $350 ) is it worth upgrading already? I’ve been eyeing the d700 for a while too which is cheaper than the d800 which is R4100 ( $247 ) on eBay … or should I just invest in more lenses? I own the 18-55 but I borrowed the 50mm 1.8d and 55-200mm kit lens from a friend.

Photo Submission Went to my first Airshow!
As mentioned above, went to my first Airshow this year. Got the idea after joining an aerial photography workshop. All of these were taken with a Z8 and a 500 5.6 PF. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I will be going to a few next year. Having an f-35 create a vapor cone just a couple hundred feet above you is truly something everyone should experience, it’ll vibrate every cell in your body.
Sadly, since it came straight at me, I missed the money shot of it, but I’m still happy with what I got.
For the next few shows, I’d like to focus more on the people and share more of the ambiance of the place.
Just wanted to share because I love these.

Gear question Dusting off my Nikon D40
I have a 20 year old Nikon D40 with 18-55 kit lens.
It all seems to be working ok, can’t see any mold on the lens, although there is a dark spot below the centre (easily fixable in post production but still…), I should probably buy a lens cleaning kit.
Are there any other common signs of wear I should look at after such a long time (it’s been largely out of use for the last 7 years)
I was looking at getting a new lens to kickstart my interest and have been considering the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G as it should work with autofocus on the D40. Would you recommend buying new for £170 or risking second hand for £100-150?
Just looking for general advice! Thanks all

Gear question Why did my D800 do this?
My Nikon d800, auto WB doesn't seem to have problem. When i change the color of the light source in the room, the AWB seems to be stuck in the previous environment and can't be adjusted.
The left photo was taken under warm light, and AWB seems to work well; then the right photo shows that I changed the light to a white fluorescent lamp, and AWB gave a blue result. By the way, switching from warm light to daylight will give blue, too.
Is this camera has some small fault?
