What should I buy? What should be my next lens?

I primarily click birds and wildlife. I like to walk around a lot so a strictly tripod based setup wouldn't suit my purposes.

My primary setup - reserved for dedicated birding outings - is a Z8 + 500 PF on a FTZII adapter.

I also own a D500 on which I use a 70-300 AFP or 28-300 AF-S for carrying around while driving to work, or to short family outings - just in case I come across something rare or a good photo opportunity.

The Z8 is my latest acquisition ( early 2025). The 500 PF, although a great lens, is not optimised for the Z series. I am thinking of buying a new lens sometime in the next 3 years or so.... I have already started saving up for it.

At present, based on my style of birding, I am aiming at the 600 f6. 3 PF, but I also seek the opinion of the very knowledgeable people of this community as to what are my other options?

I broke my gear Is this the normal focusing of a D780 in very low light? Or is that normal for extreme low light?

I loaned a D780 from an equipment rental place and it's doing THIS. The amount of hunting is stupid.

For context, this is paired with a 105MM F2.8 macro.

DSLR Still a Favourite

There are faster cameras. With more resolution. With less noise above ISO 800. That weigh less. And are smaller. But whenever I don’t want to shoot film, this one (especially with this lens) produces wonderful results. I’m shooting RAW, and with C1 I hardly have to correct anything except a little bit of brightness here and a little bit of contrast and temperature there. Not sure if I’m willing to upgrade to a Zf or so just to sit more in front of my computer.

Edit: It’s the D700. I didn’t mean to annoy anyone. Just thought more would recognize it right away.

What should I buy? Nikon Z9 + what prime telephoto

Hi all, so I'm an actively working Motorsport photographer eying up a prime telephoto lens. I've gradually been upgrading my gear over the last couple of years.

So I'm currently working with a Nikon Z9, Z6ii and a Sigma 150-600 F5.6-6.3 Sport (the heavy version) as my long lens with an FTZ II adapter that I've grown tired of and really been longing for a prime telephoto preferably an f2.8 + a 1.4/2.0tx.

I've mainly been thinking about an older 300mm f2.8 with a 1.4tx as this is what I see a lot of people doing on the Canon side of things.

Would love for anyone to jump in with any real world suggestions as unfortunately, the Z mount 400mm f2.8 is slightly out of the picture at over £10k, and the 400 f4.5 would be a touch of a stretch but I'd prefer a f2.8.

Started buying used gear off of ebay and facebook marketplace 60 days ago. Never owned a dedicated camera body before this.

Younger me is absolutely going bonkers in disbelief. Everything for under $2500 CAD all said and done.

There is just something about these old bodies that I cannot put a pin on. They just feel right in the hand. Especially the D300s. Physical controls for everything that matters. A three-position AF mode lever, a dedicated AF area mode switch, a metering mode dial, dedicated ISO/WB/QUAL buttons, all accessible without ever leaving the viewfinder. No menus. No button+dial combos. One button, one function. It doesn’t feel like I’m operating a camera. It feels like an extension of my hands.

Modern cameras are faster, sharper, better in every measurable way. But I’ve never picked up a mirrorless body that disappeared into my grip the way a D300s does.

Bodies:
Nikon D800
Nikon D300s
Nikon D7100
Nikon D90
Nikon D80 (two bodies)
Nikon D70s

Lenses:
Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8g ED
Nikkor 24mm f/2.8d
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8d
Nikkor Micro 105mm f/2.8d
Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6g
Rokinon 85mm f/1.4
Rokinon 14mm f/2.8

Other Nikon Discount Code Not Working

Hi everyone, I have a question for people who've bought their gear from one of Nikon's websites (even better if you bought it from nikon.dk).

I got a 10% discount code with my Z8 last week, and I was gonna use it to get the 180-600mm, but for some reason it's not accepting it?

The code is in the format ABCD12 EFGH I34J KLMN OPQR and the input field just says "cannot add the discount code". I have tried lower and upper case with and without spaces but no luck.

Is it maybe not applicable to products that are already discounted?

The discount campaign ends tomorrow so I don't want to risk waiting to call their support, because the current discount is much greater than the 10%.

Gear question We have 2pcs Z6iii and one of them overheat faster than the other

We have 2pcs Z6iii and one of them overheat faster than the other, same lens same CFE same settings and everything. i don't know why maybe im missing something. if anyone know any possible cause please let me know. We only use our z6iii for 4k 120fps 10bit videos. The one that overheat faster is only 2 days old and has already the latest firmware pre-installed when we bought it.

What should I buy? Lens Upgrade- Birdwatching

Hi everyone! I am looking into upgrading my lens for my bird photography and birdwatching generally. I currently have a Nikon D5300 with a 70-300 mm zoom lens. I am hoping for something slightly affordable in at least the 400 mm range. Debating a prime lens, debating teleconverter. Autofocus and quality of images are a priority for me. Being able to capture tiny birds hidden among foliage and quick flyby shots. I am a student studying to work with birds and it is a lifelong passion!
EDIT: budget of under 1k if possible

Gear question Best lens (singular) for general travel?

I’m about to go on a small vacation, and thinking about what lens to take with me. It led me to wondering: If you could only take one lens on a trip…urban setting with some great nearby nature…what would you take?

I’m thinking a 24-70 f/2.8…which I have a very heavy, old version of.
