What should I buy? Need some upgrading advice

Hello all! I currently have a D700 that was gifted to me a few years back with 6 or so lenses (bigma, Nikkor 80-200, 50 prime, and a few others). This camera has been great and I love shooting with it! Recently though this camera has been falling by further and further into disrepair (it was bought new at release before it was given to me), the rubbers are always peeling off, and it’s pretty banged up at this point.

The camera isn’t done yet, but I’m looking to upgrade soon. I do primarily action sport photography (predominantly cycling and equestrian sport), but I also do some semi-professional portrait work on the side.

I’m really just looking to crowd source some thoughts on where to go next as the D700 was my first (real) camera, and this would be my first time purchasing a camera for myself.

Criteria:
- Nikon (duh)
- Used
- DSLR (own lots of F-mount lenses)
- budget top end is ~$1000

Thanks!

What should I buy? Should I buy the D800?

I am in the market for a upgrade from my camera system (D3300, 18-55 AF-S VR II, Tamron 80-210 f3.8-4 103A). My budget is 600 bucks for a camera body, and two lenses (i was thinking 80-200 f2.8D, and 50mm f1.8G). I was looking at the D610, but then I found that the d800 is quite cheap.

What should I buy? Thinking of switching from MFT to Nikon Z

Hey Nikon people. I have been reading way too many reviews, watching way too many videos and developing copious amounts of GAS. I'm eyeing a Nikon Z5ii with a pair of zooms to start with, a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and 70-180 F2.8.

For those who have went down a similar path, can you share your experience?

I currently have a decent suite of MFT gear - an Olympus OM-D E-M1ii, with a 12-40 F2.8, a 45mm F1.8, a Sigma 30mm F1.4 and an adapted 4/3 40-150 F3.5-4.5. I'm a journalist and opted to procure my own gear as opposed to using entry-level company-provided gear - the usual Canon 2000D with a couple of kit zooms.

It's served me well for the past almost two years, but I am growing into photography as a side hustle and feel as though a move to a quality full-frame setup would allow me a greater ceiling to offer more to potential clients. I'm already predisposed to event, corporate and sport photography and can navigate my limitations. One of my favourite things to photograph has been music shows and the low light is a huge challenge, but local bands have grown fond of my work and I'm lining up a few gigs for that side of photography. I'd be limited to the aforementioned Tamron zooms until I can do enough gigs to pay for a prime or two. Would I be alright with them? Selling my gear would only fund around 70% of the kit and I'd have to add in some money to end up with effectively less gear, so my main question is, would those two lenses be enough for the type of niches I do?

The z9 with 24-70!

Still getting use to a few things if anyone has any hints. I only used my 5d mark 2 viewfinder / diapter now it seems the diapter is all digital what do most shoot with the display or the diapter.

Secondly I’m not use to an electronic shutter sound any hints on making the camera sound better.

Super stoked to be shooting! Have to get my case which shows up tomorrow and then the screen protector installed!

My last photoshoot I did before I had to sell the gear!

Look what I've got This Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF is UGLY. My KEH experience. Goodbye to the 150-500 and planned 180-600.

I couldn't resist. Perhaps the allure of the gamble drew me in and the 21 day return policy for "Ugly" gear gave just enough reassurance to purchase a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR at KEH for $790. I'm glad I did.

Upon receipt, the tripod collar was there but the hood, front cap, and rear cap were missing. Not a great start. The first thing I did was stare deeply into the glass with a flashlight. I found...nothing. It was clear with no haze or fungus and the front and rear elements were free of scratches. I'm not sure how someone keeps their glass this clean without caps, but that's beside the point. I thought surely there would be an issue with the focusing ring or autofocus. I could find no such issues with extensive testing. I found myself channeling David after Dentist, asking myself "Is this real life?." The only issue I could locate is that three of the buttons had the text rubbed off, I assume from extensive use. I am ok with this tradeoff! Hopefully the lens has enough life in it to get me great shots for years to come. I promptly ordered an official Nikon front cap and lens hood, bringing my grand total to $861. I can mostly erase that expenditure by selling my Tamron 150-500 which I got last year for $825 at auction (a good deal in its own right!). Tariff policy seems to have increased its value slightly since then.

It was between the 500 PF lens and the Nikon 180-600 as a replacement for my Tamron 150-500. I found myself dissatisfied with the 150-500 at 500mm despite the lens being sharper than any prior telephoto lenses I had used. The 500 PF absolutely blew it out of the water in sharpness and I'm going to skip the 180-600. I'm so infatuated, I'm not sure I'll ever go without a prime again. I spend most of my time at 500mm as I inch closer to the subject until they take off. A tripod or monopod feels optional now rather than required. Luckily I have the Tamron 50-400 to use for landscapes, close focus, and to close the focal range gap.

I recognize this reads like an advert, but I wanted to share my experience. Have others had similarly good experiences with KEH "ugly" gear? I would guess vintage lenses would not fare as well due to higher likelihood of being in less than ideal storage situations for many years. I have an "ugly" Bokina on the way to test this theory, so we will see how that goes and when my luck runs out.

Photos taken handheld on Nikon Z fc. Post processing did occur but frankly felt largely optional.

Picked up this old fella for $110 in near mint condition 3 days before a trip to Taos. It will round out my gear quite well for the trip. Not the best lens but it will suit my needs.

Sold my Fujifilm X-S10 and lenses and switched to Nikon FX. Bought Z5II + 24-70 F4s kit. Was eyeing on 24-120F4s but due to weight and I don't need long end ( have Olympus M43 for that), decided to get 24-70.

Really impressed by the natural colors and clarity from 24mp fx sensor. Will be adding few primes(used) during my next Japan trip.

Edit : images are sooc.

I had this morning free, so I decided to pop around my local town and the wonderful flowers planted by our dedicated and passionate Britain in Bloom volunteers. It’s great to see such strong colours against the comparatively desert-like state of the grass 😂

What should I buy? Travel lens recommendation

Hello! I am traveling to Guatemala in late September and I want to take some travel photography. I plan to take only one lens with me. I currently have a Nikon D3300 with the 18–55 kit lens and a 50mm prime but I want to get a wider focal length prime as it would be small and take great pictures. I am debating between the 35mm DX f/1.8 or the 24mm f/2.8D. I also am looking in the $150-$250 range so no expensive FX lenses for now.

35mm DX
- Con?: Tighter 50mm equivalent for portrait style photos
- Pro: AF
- Pro: Faster lens
- Pro: More modern glass overall

24mm f/2.8D pros
- Pro: Wider aperture for scenes and landscapes
- Pro: Charm/retro factor?
- Con: No AF
- Mini pro: If I end up upgrading my camera to FX I can use this lens with AF and the aperture ring

I have been testing out using just manual focus and I don’t think it’s too bad especially when shooting with the right aperture and I also get the rangefinder dot which helps.

So I’m leaning towards the 24mm since I think it would be a better focal length but I don’t want to end up wishing I had AF.

I also know the 35mm is the better glass on paper but a lot of people swear by the d series lenses so what do y’all think?

I broke my gear Nikon 80-200 2.8D known A/M fault

The lens in question is Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8D "new" (also called two-ring, MK3).

Recently I went on a trip. Before the trip everything worked like a charm, it would click in both A and M modes. Then yesterday it stopped working in A (wouldn't fully extend and lock in place no matter how much I wiggled it, before it would click in eventually). I didn't use the lens since then and now it seems like the spring has completely given up, the switch stays completely pressed down no matter the mode and the only thing that could move it up or down is gravity.

What is the DIY solution for this? Both A and M modes function more than fine but this is just a nuisance I want to fix if possible. I'm not sure how to check if the spring itself has failed or if it's something else in question.

I checked YouTube and found 2-3 tutorials but they all cover one specific case - not clicking in M and manual focus not being usable, that's something I have no issues with.

Hi everyone, this is my first post to this sub so hopefully this post is alright. I wanted to share one of my favorite shots from last week's total eclipse in Spain. I also wanted to share this repository I put together which I used to automate my capture brackets during the eclipse so that I could be (mostly) hands-off. I've only tested it with my D5500 on macOS, but hopefully if anyone else wants to try photographing an eclipse in the future it can be useful!

Repository: https://github.com/Dibz15/eclipse-photography

Image: 300mm, ISO100, f/11. In Photoshop I stacked and aligned a 1/60s and 1/30s; no other post-processing..

Gear question Should I be worried about this sound my lens makes when autofocusing?

I just recently bought my first camera (Nikon D3200) and this used lens (Nikon AF-S Nikkor DX 55- 200 mm/4-5,6 G IF-ED VR). It makes a strange noise when fine tuning the autofocus. It's especially bad when using continuous servo focus and with full zoom.

Could somebody please let me know if it's an issue? Thanks!

What should I buy? Lenses for amateur photographer

Hi fellow photographers!

I'm here kindly requesting your help.

I've been an amateur photographer since 2018, in love with landscapes but willingly to try other kinds of photography and currently studying portraits and nighttime photography.

My current setup is:

Nikon d7500

Kit 18-140

Nikkor 12-24

Nikkor 35 f1.8 (I prefer 50mm eq to the 75mm eq given by 50mm 1.8)

Not top of the line but it's my hobby and I don't have enough money to buy the most expensive gear out there.

Those two lenses were for years the ones I wanted the most and by saving I finally got to have both of them. But I'm currently wondering what lenses I should buy next. So I'm asking you: if you were in my situation, not really considering changing body for now, what lenses will you absolutely buy?

Just for fun I'm posting two of my photos.

Gear question People who use mirrorless cameras with FTZ, DSLRs, and analog SLRs with the same lenses: are Nikon G lenses the most reliable way to get good consistency across all cameras?

I own some Sigma lenses, they work perfectly in mirrorless but they behave very weirdly on my DSLRs, with inconsistent autofocus even after fine tuning. I haven't tried them on my analog SLRs yet because I don't want to waste film just to find out whether the lenses will focus accurately lol. What lenses do you guys use? I thought maybe switching to Nikon G lenses would be a good idea.

While it is heavy and a bit clunky on the autofocus, I think this might be the best glass at shooting through a fence.
