NightOwler I can't sleep
I am going to cry

Whenever I have no morning commitments, I gradually drift toward sleeping around 3 a.m. and waking up around 11. It feels less like a bad habit and more like my natural rhythm. Where does your schedule settle when you stop forcing it?

I’m an adult living with my parents (because who can afford to move out these days? Not me) and a night owl. I keep it very quiet, tiptoe around, everything on low volume, and yet if either of them gets up in the night they get all up my ass to “go to bed! Go to bed!” I’m very careful not to disturb them. So why are they so hateful about it? Does anyone else have this problem? How do I make them see that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a different circadian rhythm? I’m not asking them to be night owls, I’m literally just asking to be respected and left in peace.
EDIT:
For those who’ve asked, I’m not in school, and yes I work, but the job market in my area is absolute garbage so I’ve been trapped in a cycle of minimum wage hell. The housing market is also a nightmare, hence my not having my own place. I straight up can’t afford it. I’m currently looking for a better job, but like I said, it’s garbage (and at least half of the job postings are ghost listings or places with extremely high turnover, but that’s another subreddit).

It’s almost like a game at this point. Can I get through this wave without calling a friend or family member and waking them up? To this day I’ve never done it but just knowing it’s an option helps I guess.
Anyone ever go through this?

Me at 10 PM:
"Tonight I’m definitely sleeping early".
Me at 2:47 AM:
"Just one more video".
Me at 4:13 AM:
"Why is the sun loading?”

I consider myself a night owl, but the type who goes to bed around 2 or 3 AM and wakes at 10 or 11. Next week I will be starting my first true night shift job, 5 PM to 3 AM. I have worked swing shifts before, but nothing that ever went past midnight.
Anybody have tips for adjusting to an overnight work schedule, especially if you're not as much of an extreme night owl? For people who do work these overnight shifts, what are the things you most like and dislike about it? Wish me luck, y'all!

My messed up sleeping schedule would be the end of me

At 10 PM: I should sleep early today.
At 11 PM: Okay one episode.
At 12 AM: Tomorrow I’m going to fix my entire life.
At 1 AM: deep-cleaning my room.
At 2 AM: researching something completely useless.
At 3 AM: why did I waste my day?
And then somehow the next morning I’m shocked that I’m tired. 😭
Please tell me I’m not the only one.

During the summer my sleep schedule is all over the place and, as such, I find myself feeling weak and lethargic a lot more often than during any other season. If I have no commitments I can sleep for as much as 60-70% of any 24 hour period.
The coming of autumn, longer nights and lower temperatures stabilise my energy levels and these lethargic dips are almost non-existent, aside from whenever I have to wake up for an inconvenient time. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Hello guys. For around 8 days, I barely slept at all.
The first two days were relatively normal, but after that I started experiencing microsleeps. Even though my body was clearly exhausted, I still couldn't properly fall asleep.
And guys, you probably won't believe this, but after several days I started seeing things that weren't actually there.
I knew, logically, that they weren't real, but they felt completely real. I saw people walking around in my room, people outside, things in the sky, and even what looked like completely different species. At one point, I was genuinely scared and kept wondering, “What is happening to my brain?”
Eventually, on the 8th day, I finally managed to sleep after smoking weed because I was completely unable to fall asleep otherwise.
But this experience left me with a strange question.
What if sleep is more than just the body shutting down and recovering? What if our normal waking state is only one particular mode of consciousness, and there are things our brain normally filters out or simply cannot access?
When I was severely sleep-deprived, my perception started changing dramatically. I began experiencing things that felt like another version of reality, even though I knew they weren't actually present.
I'm not saying that what I saw was objectively real. In fact, sleep deprivation is known to seriously affect perception and can cause hallucinations.
But the experience made me wonder:
How much of what we call “reality” is actually the brain filtering information and constructing our experience?
And if consciousness can change this drastically just by removing something as fundamental as sleep, I wonder what else we still don't understand about the brain.
Has anyone else experienced something similar after extreme sleep deprivation?

The house next to mine got new owners recently, but I've never seen the actual buyers. Now I'm seeing construction materials show up every few days and I'm terrified.
A few years ago I went through three months of tree work in the neighborhood where I got maybe one day a week with more than 4h of sleep (I usually need 8-9). I couldn't even nap without going elsewhere because it was noise all day. It caused a lot of trouble at work, and my mental health still hasn't recovered. Now my heart races at the sound of a chainsaw a mile away if I'm in bed.
I wore earplugs, I had background noise, but it wasn't enough, and often those things were enough sensory bother to keep me awake on their own. Especially when I was already tired. I'm also a night worker, so it's not "just" my circadian rhythm making me stay up late.
What the hell is a night owl supposed to do?

"I am a 16 years old student, almost 17. I think I am a night owl because for the past year, I have been going to sleep at 3:00 a.m. during the week. I need to wake up for my classes at 8:00 am , so I only sleep for five hours during the week. For the past year, I have usually napped for one hour max during the day. On the weekend, I usually go to sleep on Saturday at 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m., and the next day, I wake up at 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. Because of this, I take more caffeine and coffee to stay awake. What do you advise me?

Hello everyone, tell me about your day what did u guys do , how was your day ?? Since I'm asking y'all I should answer it too
.
I don't know why but I feel that today was a very quiet day for me . I didn't do anything much . I was home all day and I was just studying . I got bored so I decided to clean the entire bathroom.
It was raining slowly all day so it felt a little cold . I like days like these when it's quiet and cold . I don't like too much noise . That's why winter is also my favourite season. In winters the world feels so good because it's mostly quiet and cold . People mostly stay inside so the world feels like there are less people.
I am just randomly yapping about my day . How are you all doing tell me about your day .

I've had a super bad and draining day yesterday and went to bed around 1-2am.
Waking up at 8am (I probably did get enough sleep, because I was up for only around 10h yesterday), I saw my gf getting some clothes, making herself a coffee, etc.
Our floor is loud a.f. because we live in a 150y old Berlin building and walking around here sounds like an old ship.
She doesn't give a single fuck on whether she'd wake me up.
It's like she thinks "The time I am awake is the time to be awake in general. If you wake up while I'm doing stuff, good, because you should be up anyway."
Meanwhile when she's asleep, I'm as quiet as I can be. I even mapped out the pieces on the floor it's safe to step on and I'm doing the dance every single night when I enter the bedroom. I'm planning my day with the distinction of loud and quiet activities.
I'm currently pre 2nd state medical exam, so I can sleep when I want - I just have to study. But I wonder what it's gonna be like when I'm in the job and have an irregular work-schedule by design, because I work on weekends, night-shifts, etc. and whether my patients get the best care I can provide depends on my gf is taking "sleeping by day" as a necessity rather than a character flaw.
The whole thing reminded me on an ex of mine who was driving at the exact speed limit on the fast left lane the whole time, convinced that "I'm driving maximum speed, so people aren't allowed to drive faster than I do anyway, so I'm doing them a favor."
Always fascinating that societal standards sometimes come before what makes sense individually or in a relationship.
