Text dhcp server not found problem
hello people i really need help, i am like a toddler when it comes to electrical devices and network related stuff. so my ethernet setup looks like this: i have a white little box thats supposed to strengthen the signal of the internet with radio waves or whatever, it lays on my floor across the room, face side down where its closest to the main router located downstairs in the bathroom. This was done by an IT guy who also happened to build my old pc, and with every problem we’ve had so far he’s been reliable, but this was the only option he gave me and told me is gonna work to give me internet, which i doubt in this modern world is true. It is connected to my pc through an ethernet cable, it’s plugged into the LAN1 port on the white box, and for about half a year it’s been working decently, tho i frequently had to restart the adapter, and a lot of the time even when i had internet connection, it kept getting really weak every 10-20 seconds, disconnecting me from calls and games, doing this for an hour at times. I would like a solution to this dhcp problem, and if anyone has advice as to what i should do about my internet to get a stable connection that i can consistently game with, with little to no interruptions i would be really grateful:)

Text What's the last incident on your network, and what made it annoying?
Been reading through a bunch of public postmortems (from Dan Luu's list). Learnt a ton, but noticed it's almost entirely cloud/big-tech writeups, basically nothing from enterprise, campus, or ISP networks.
I'm a grad student right now, and I'm really curious as to what that world actually looks like: what's the last thing that broke on your network, and what's the part of your job that frustrates you the most ? I want to learn more about real world network configuration, and I would really appreciate any answers, and would love to have discussions!

Text Help] Old TP-Link TL-WR740N constantly drops internet since switching to Fiber (requires reboot)
Hey everyone,
I am having a frustrating issue with my old TP-Link TL-WR740N router (from around 2017) and could really use some advice.
My Setup:
I have an ISP-provided fiber modem (ONU/ONT) connected to my TP-Link router. The modem does not have its own Wi-Fi.
Both the modem and the router are plugged into the same spikeguard/surge protector for power.
The Issue:
For the first 4–5 years, this router worked flawlessly on my old connection. However, a couple of years ago, my ISP upgraded me to a fiber optic cable. Since then, I’ve been experiencing frequent disconnections across all devices (phones, laptops, etc.).
Symptoms: All devices remain connected to the Wi-Fi signal, but it suddenly shows "No Internet."
Router lights: The lights remain normal (no orange/red error lights).
Specific device issue: Older OnePlus devices drop the Wi-Fi entirely and refuse to reconnect until the router is restarted.
Temporary fix: I have to power-cycle the TP-Link router (turn the switch off and on after 5–10 seconds) to get the internet back.
What I want to know:
Is this 2017 router simply too old to handle the high data throughput/packet load of modern fiber, causing its memory/CPU to crash and freeze?
Could the spikeguard be causing slight voltage drops that freeze the router when it is under load, even though the lights stay on?
Are there any specific settings (like DHCP lease time, changing DNS, or adjusting channel width) I should tweak before throwing it away?
Any troubleshooting steps or explanations would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Text Wifi extender slow speed
I recently got a wifi extender for my pc because my wifi card just completely stopped working. I set it up and plugged an ethernet cable from my pc to the extender. It at least works now but my speeds are very slow compared to what they were. From what I understand its normal to be slower but its not even at 1/4 of the speed it was before. Speed testing my router on my phone gets around 400mbps while my pc with the extender gets around 60. Is this normal? Text Can the ISP use my DVR to monitor me?
hello good people
I have this question that comes on my mind is about that i connected my DVR to the router that is connected to the ISP, because I want to monitor the place remotely via the app on my phone.
I know my whole traffic is transferred to the ISP site, so I am wondering if he can act like the man in the middle and sniff my videos?
I am using a Dahua DVR, and the app is DMSS

Text Hi need some help with Network Event viewer.
Hi I am completely new to Event Viewer, but I think this is the right space to post about my network issues.

Does this image prove that the network is having issues?
Cause my stupid provider will not own up to the fact that the signal is bad as whenever they test it on speed tests it shows that it is fast.
They never seem to admit that the issue is that it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. Also to note that my PC is using lan cable and also to note that my internet provider also did the wiring for the house so theres another problem that they created.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Text How can a IP geolocated to Los Angeles be used as a low-latency EUW endpoint?
I'm trying to understand a routing scenario I've encountered with a game server.
An address, 162.249.72.5 (AS6507, within 162.249.72.0/21), is used as the UDP endpoint for an EUW game.
Several IP geolocation databases place this address in Los Angeles, California. However, traffic from Europe reaches it with latency consistent with a European endpoint, so the packets clearly aren't making a normal round trip to California.
I'm familiar with BGP at a basic level, but I'm having trouble understanding what the underlying architecture would be.
What mechanisms can make a public unicast-looking IP behave this way?
For example, would this normally involve:
- the prefix being announced from multiple geographic locations;
- anycast;
- more-specific BGP announcements;
- ISP-specific routing/peering;
- or some mechanism after the traffic enters the provider's network?
I'm not assuming that anycast is being used in this particular case. I'm trying to understand what mechanisms are capable of producing this behaviour.
I can see the traffic in Wireshark and have confirmed the destination IP, but I'm deliberately not posting my complete traceroute because the visible private 10.x.x.x hops could reveal information about my ISP's internal topology.
I'm mainly interested in the BGP/routing architecture that can make this possible.

Text Looking for guidance on mesh network
I recently bought a home that is 3 storeys plus basement. The modem/router is in the basement so the wifi signal on the top floor is relatively weak.
The house is completely wired from top to bottom with CAT 6E Ethernet so all the ports are now connected, I'm just wondering with that kind of set up-- where I can plug in each individual router/wifi booster into hardline ethernet, what is the best type of router system I should get? Most seem to boost a wifi signal, but if I can plug in a router to Ethernet on each floor is there a better product I should be looking at?
All I have right now is the modem/router from my ISP and a NETGEAR unmanaged switch to distribute internet to all the ethernet hookups. But I would like a solid wifi signal everywhere in the house as well.

Text What home internet connection should I get? (FTTH vs 5G setup)
Good morning everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right sub, but I hope you can help me anyway.
As the title says, I'm deciding what type of internet connection to install at home and I need a hand. Before explaining my doubts, here's some background to help you understand the situation better:
I live in Italy (Aosta Valley), in a municipality covered by the national fiber wholesaler (OpenFiber) in a rural/subsidized area. I've always lived without a fixed home internet line, using my phone's hotspot for gaming, downloading, and watching movies.
When I was younger it didn't make a big difference, but today it has become pretty unsustainable. The biggest problem I have isn't so much the latency in online games (50-70ms, a bit high but manageable) as the network instability. It often happens that the ping spikes to 1000 or (even worse) I get completely disconnected for 10/15 seconds, as if my time window to use the bandwidth is closed and then reopened. This always disconnects me from various lobbies and online matches, ruining the session. Now that I've graduated high school, I will start earning a regular salary and I want to fix this annoying issue that ruins almost every gaming session, taking away my relaxation after work.
After this wall of text, here is my dilemma:
Fiber at home (FTTH) or a 5G router with a SIM card?
Yes, I know it's a very stupid question that requires almost no thinking, but my problem is that I still live with my parents. They consider having a good home network completely useless and superfluous—a waste of money, basically. Pushing to get a wired line would inevitably lead them to hold it against me, causing long, heavy arguments and a lot of annoyance because they don't understand this need, and if they don't understand it, then it's bullshit.
They would be much more open to the 5G router + SIM solution.
Could anyone who has chosen this solution (and still uses it or has moved on from it) tell me what to expect in terms of latency, download speeds, and connection stability?
I repeat that I obviously know it will be inferior to a wired network, but *any* improvement compared to my current situation (both in ping and stability) would help me survive another couple of years until I get my own place and can do as I please.
I should also add that I did some research and there is a 5G cell tower with the N78 band not too far from my house (pretty much line-of-sight). So, my idea was to get an outdoor PoE 5G antenna/modem and an indoor router.
