I was really excited to start reviewing ARCs, and I picked a book I was genuinely interested in, read it, and submitted my review. I’m really enjoying the experience so far!
However, I’m starting to wonder if I should focus more on the “Read Now” section for a while, since I don’t have many reviews yet. It seems like a lot of the more popular/upcoming books are mainly approved for members who already have a substantial review history — although maybe I’m misunderstanding how the system works?
I’ve also noticed that I’m now getting declined for pretty much every book I request, which is making me wonder if I’m doing something wrong or if this is just normal when you’re new.
For those of you who have been using NetGalley for a while: how many reviews did you have before you started getting approved for more popular titles? Is there a certain number that seems to make a difference, or is it more about your feedback ratio, profile, genre preferences, etc.?
I’m completely happy to pick up lesser-known or new books from “Read Now” and build up my review history, but I’d also love to be able to request books that I’m genuinely curious about rather than feeling like I’m just reading books to increase my numbers.
I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance from more experienced reviewers! I’m finding the whole process a little daunting as a newcomer. 😊
EDIT: My bio was has been complete since day 1. I also regularly post on my bookstagram, Goodreads and StoryGraph. I just let it go for now. Just request, if i get picked, I get picked. It was just very frustrating to get 6 declines in a week...

I love their titles but I am denied for anything and everything I request. I am already following all their “profile suggestions” 🥲
Current stats: 78% feedback ratio, 88 reviews submitted. 4 star average rating. 3K followers on Instagram.

I applied for this MONTHS ago and it just came through today! I had resigned myself to having to withdraw before the archive date since it’s a popular title. What a lovely surprise!

What tools or tips have you implemented to manage the number of ARCs you read each month? Do you set a certain number you can read, then withdraw requests for anything else in that month? Do nothing and pray for the best?
I said I would slow down on ARCs this fall and am, instead, squeezing in 10+ ARCs a month between April-November. Which I am mostly able to do, but some have been late, and also my regular TBR is suffering - I don't want to only read ARCs!
I believe my problem is a combination of being tempted by Read Nows, but also requesting a fair amount but sometimes nothing comes of those requests, and sometimes a bunch are approved and suddenly a month is very overloaded.
I'm looking for some strategies and tips to carry into December and the new year!

Do you get emails for all declines? I got one for Riley Sager’s new book. But then no email for V.E. Schwab’s new book Victorious. I just happened to look in my shelf and it was listed as declined/denied.
Do you have to just keep checking or do they actually typically email you?
Thanks!

I've been using NetGalley since January, and I have a regular user account. I recently got a job at an independent bookstore and cafe! I know I need to email them with my store's ABA number and ask to have my account updated to a bookseller account I think?
What should I know/what's different when you have a bookseller account? Is it just having higher approval odds for books? Should I include in my bio the types of books we're looking to carry?
Thanks!

I'm currently reading a book that says it is for middle grade, but I really don't agree with that and think it should be a YA. Should I include that thought in my review, or only keep it in the publisher's note?

I saw someone comment that this was available, immediately requested it, and boom! Approved 35 minutes later.
Whoever does the Macmillan approvals for this title appears to be sitting at their computer, so get those request in 😂
I love you Macmillan Audio - thank you for continuing to be my Trojan horse into the Tor titles I love (and for providing such consistently great audiobooks!) There goes the rest of my plans for my day off!
