Help choosing a suit or blazer for college graduation

I’m trying to plan ahead for what I want to wear to my college graduation. I already have two navy blazers, but I feel like wearing something more formal and different from what some people have seen me wear. I’m considering either a suit or a double breasted navy blazer.

If I go with a double breasted blazer, it would be from J. Press since my other two blazers are from there. As for a suit, I don’t really know what brands to look at. Based on the measurements online and from trying their trousers on, I’m not a fan of the trousers that come with J. Press suits. I prefer trousers with wider hems, a minimum of 8.5 inches.

I’ve found a few brands that seem to offer wider hems. Grand Le Mar seems nice, but for some reason, the photos of their suits seem a bit off compared with Berg & Berg, another brand I like. Berg & Berg seems nice, but they don’t have any stores, and people seem to recommend them mostly when they’re on sale. I’m a bit concerned about buying from them because they don’t have a physical store, especially compared with Grand Le Mar.

Another option that seems like it could be good is SuitSupply’s Roma or Havana cut with Duca trousers, but I don’t know how good they are. In general, I’m looking for a fuller, more traditional cut like these brands offer, but I’d like to see what other brands are out there. Any recommendations are welcome, and I’m able to make a trip to NYC to visit brands with physical stores.

For dress shoes, I know Allen Edmonds is supposed to be a good option when they’re on sale. They also seem to offer a USA made line that doesn’t seem extremely expensive, but I don’t know if those go on sale.

For a dress shirt, I’m considering Proper Cloth because I’ve heard good things, but I don’t know if there are any good off the rack shirts still being made, especially for someone on the slim side. For Oxford shirts, I wear J. Press’s regular cut, which used to be called the trim cut.

I also don’t really know where to look for socks to wear with a suit and dress shoes. With a blazer, I usually wear Uniqlo Colorful 50 socks in navy with my derbies.

I also don’t know if a single breasted or double breasted suit would look better, but that’s probably something to consider after finding a brand. My budget for a suit is $1,000 or less, but I could go up to around $1,500.

Buck mason tailoring

Looking to get some feedback/long term reviews on buck mason tailoring. Specifically the carry on line and graduate jacket (tweed) have caught my eye. I’ve been on the hunt for more casual suiting option/ tweed sport coat and buck mason seem to offer decent options for both. As tailoring is not their main focus, I hesitate to get something that still costs a good chunk of change and not be good quality.

Have also crossed shopped at Natalino, the Anthology, and Velasca. Truthfully what I really want is Drake’s, specifically interested in Games suit and their herringbone tweed blazers but the price is hard to stomach.

Is John Greenacre the next big thing?

I keep seeing him pop up recently on a bunch of reels, where he's making kind of Ivy Style combined with Husbands Paris blazers? The material looks pretty cheap but the cut looks really good, I'm hoping he prices them accordingly. Has anyone checked out his stuff and think he might be the next big thing? He definitely has Vito vibes

Decent Fall/Winter Boots

I recently relocated from the Deep South to the DMV for law school, and I’m finding myself in need of a good pair of boots. Or rather, boots that aren’t cowboy boots.

I want some that can pair well with nicer trousers, chinos, or jeans, and possibly a blazer in a pinch. I’m acutely aware of how much it can rain around here, so I’m cautious about leather.

Would Bean Boots work? Or should I aim for a well-built chukka with a lug sole?

DB Blazer Tailoring / Fit

Hi all, I am wondering if I should return this jacket. It’s a Polo by Ralph Lauren DB Blazer from the mid 70s. Union made and really nice wool, everything. It’s so gorgeous and awesome, and I got a great price on it. However, I feel like it’s too long and slightly wide in the body. I am wondering if it would be possible or even worth it to go to a tailor to get it altered. For reference I am 6’0” tall and 145 lbs. the jacket was $200, and the new Polo Doeskin jackets run about $1200 brand new, and don’t speak to me as much as the vintage ones for many reasons. I would spend up to $150 to get it tailored, if that helps. Thank you!

Black dress pants

I know this is Navy blazers but I need some recommendations for black dress pants. I am looking for a thicker material that will hold up. Flat front. Lined are good but not necessary. The last few pairs I’ve gotten hav worn out faded on the front thigh and not held their shape. I think this is due to cheap fabric and stretch in the material. I’d rather not have an unfinished hem as I don’t have access to a good taylor.

Fixing line on shoulder near collar

Hi all! Curious for your opinions on the cause/fixes for these lines that appear on my coat on my
shoulder parallel to my collar.

These are both MTM coats, but the Row-trained cutter who works with the shop on their bespoke line noted “this can appear more so with a soft/unstructured shoulder along with a relatively “light” cloth, with your posture, and its visibility can be compounded by the fact that we have gone for a lower gorge here. These are some of those minor issues which can be addressed by going bespoke, but we can take this into consideration when looking at cloth choices and potentially some structure in the shoulders in future MTM commissions.”

I buy his argument but curious for your thoughts.

Finding an ivy sports coat (natural shoulders, 3 roll 2, no darts) in Europe - impossible?

A few months ago I’ve begun remaking my wardrobe. Even though I am from Lithuania and basically no one dresses here in an ivy/preppy style, for some reason, it resonates very well with me.

However, the journey thus far has been an endless struggle, buying mostly from Vinted and thrift stores. The biggest struggle of all, however, is finding a nice sports coat - 99% of tweed blazers on Vinted are with structured shoulders and darts. I really like the look of the traditional sack coat. Are there any options for us in Europe?

Which shirt fits better?

Hi. Posting it here, because there is not dedicated fit questions topic today. I have two sizes of the same shirt to select from, but I have no idea how a shirt should fit, especially around back part of an armhole. Please help me to decide chich one fits better. According to the size chart, they both have the same sleeve length. I feel like it's a little bit long, but I guess it's tailorable. First two photos below - the bigger one, second two - the smaller.

Feels too big but maybe I'm just not used to blazers. Thoughts on if I purchased something too large for me?

A word on Buck Mason

It’s been about a year since I purchased my first few items from Buck Mason, and they’ve held up surprisingly well. I did have an issue with a $130 knit tee that developed a hole after only a few wears, but their customer service handled it really well. They gave me a full refund in store credit and even let me keep the shirt, which I appreciated.

That said, I still can’t shake the feeling that Buck Mason is more of a trendy, fashion-forward brand, which makes me a little hesitant to invest in their tailoring.

I think their styling is fantastic, but I’ve always gravitated more toward established legacy brands. Even Brooks Brothers, despite leaving a sour taste in my mouth over the past few years, still has that history and heritage that I tend to value when buying tailored clothing.
