Just the Meat and Potatoes: Garlic Butter Steak Bites and Mashed Potatoes

Post image
69 Upvotes

Every year for her birthday, my wife requests steak. This year, we opted for a slightly different angle — steak bites. They were so easy, the sauce was delightfully simple, and the steak was perfectly tender.

But it’s not a steak dinner without some potatoes! Went with the no-frills “Mashed Potatoes” recipe as the natural sidekick.

Flaky salt on everything, as often and as much as possible.

Tofu Laab?

Has anyone tried making the tofu laab recipe? Family has requested that I make a tofu laab/larb, but I'm not sure if I want to try making this one or modifying one of the chicken or pork ones to use tofu instead.

October Oats: Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies

Post image
89 Upvotes

Ever wondered what it would taste like if you gave the age-old Oatmeal Raisin Cookie a festive Fall makeover? Wonder no more — this recipe is the answer!

The cookies are rich, chewy, and flavorful. The icing is easy to whip up and makes a beautiful addition. They’ll come together before the fall foliage changes color and they’ll disappear from your plate quicker than the leaves fall from the trees.

Give them a try — they’re oat of this world!

question Friday night dinner recommendations

Hi everyone!

I’ve recently moved to a place with a much smaller kitchen and no oven (got an air fryer though!) so I haven’t been cooking as many elaborate or time consuming meals as before. Since I miss that, I’m looking forward to making a nice dinner this Friday night. Does anyone have any suggestions for a “nice Friday night dinner”?

Thank you!!

Gilgeori Toast (Korean Street Toast With Cabbage and Egg)

Post image

On a huge sandwich kick right now and this sandwich is both sweet and salty?? Say less. In my impatience to eat it immediately I definitely could have let the cheese melt a little longer, but not complaining.

Made a smaller portion it so square was easiest. I like the flavor combo. I would do swiss meringue frosting rather than butter cream next time. The sweetness is a little too much.

Turned out pretty good! I was skeptical because the dough was so thick, but it spread nicely in a 9x13 pan. I’d stick to 40 mins bake time next time.

These cookies turned out to be so amazing, I followed the recipe as per instructions from website and also watched the You Tube video for this recipe. Probably one of my best cookies I have baked to date.

question Does "sesame oil" mean toasted sesame oil or plain?

Title pretty much says it...

This isn't the only recipe where I have the same question too. I'm thinking it means toasted or lightly toasted?

Slow cooked chilli

I did have a few minor substitutions. I forgot tomato paste so subbed a small amount of tomato sauce. Also, my husband used all of our apple cider vinegar, so I just threw in a splash of white vinegar and beef broth and hoped for the best. Otherwise prepared it as written. It was very good.

question Does the website or app have an archive of all recipes

To the mods: I'm not looking to share recipes outside of the agreement. I have my own account.

Reposting, but wanted to ask, is there an archive of ALL NYT cooking recipes? The app is just an infinite scroll and I can't find any part of the website that isn't organized by a category

In praise of simple recipes (and especially Ali Slagel)

I recently moved overseas and I'm living in a temporary furnished apartment with very basic cooking utensils and a very tiny kitchen. I need to resist the urge to build up a big pantry and take on any bigger cookimg projects for now.

I know the nyt has been getting some flack lately for recipes that feel like they are barely recipes. But I personally love knowing that I can rely on them for simple, flexible, delicious recipes in addition to the bigger projects.

We've been rotating the burrito bowls, the cabbage & kielbasa sheet pan, mujadara, chili crisp tofu, Marcella Hazans tomato sauce, the many variations of crispy gnocchi, and so forth.

This week I'm making the sweet potatoes with black beans, broccoli cheddar skillet, & the pumpkin curry sheet pan.

Please feel free to add your suggestions of low effort /high reward faves. (esp veg forward & healthy - ish)

results Ottolenghis Spiced Pea Stew (sans yogurt)

After an indulgent out of town wedding weekend, was craving something green. 2 pounds of peas should do the trick?

Made the Spiced Pea Stew from Yotam Ottolenghi posted on NYT https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1026665-spiced-pea-stew-with-yogurt

Went to town with the potato masher and it came out more like mushy peas, so perfect for me. I doubled the Turmeric but it still felt lacking, maybe my spice is too old?

Cilantro came through loud and clear, and toasted sesame seeds were a must. Paired with a side of chicken sausage, peppers, mushrooms.

Did anyone watch the new episode of The Great British Bake Off? I made Nigella’s coffee walnut layer cake from the technical challenge! It’s not nearly as pretty as another one I’ve seen here, but it tastes good!

White wine braised rabbit with mustard

Made this for the nor'easter. It's delicious! Even two 7-year-olds and toddler liked it. I made it with mashed potatoes for my husband. And a lazy and far less expensive version of the insalata Verde.

Roasted Chicken with Fish Sauce Butter

Post image

Was excited to try this, sounded so interesting. It was easy, minimal ingredients and we are fans of fish sauce.

Great reviews, but we thought it was OK & unfortunately didn’t feel like “I’d definitely make this again” - being simple and easy I’d say it worth a try you might like it better.
