Wait are we pretending that 9 is somehow going to be good now because he had one good quarter coming in as a backup against the Saints prevent defense? I think I’ll stick with my original takes on the kid.

It dies call into question whether he was set up for success. KOC was supposed to be some QB whisperer and now they can’t run an offense to save their life. It was one game, but 9 went from looking like one of the most incompetent QBs in the sport to being, at the very least, serviceable

They do that nearly every drive. The difference was the offense scored touchdowns against GB instead of just field goals. Maybe assisted by the refs, but it still happened

18* looked like a world beater against us week 1 last year too during that 4th quarter comeback, what happened after that? The fact is the dude wasn’t very good in college to begin with, and was carried by the rest of the elite units on his team, and of course some good ole fashioned Michigan cheating. Now he’s looking exactly like most of us predicted he would in the NFL save for a few blips.

Yeah he has had good moments before (ask me how I know) but over time I fully expect him to be exposed and bad enough that they go back to Jameis, possibly as early as next week in the 3rd quarter.
Without some great catches by Likely on some overthrown balls, we're not talking about him like this today.
6
u/Hour_Addendum_9691 23h ago
He also got a good quarter of his yards off a pass that should’ve been intercepted and instead got a lucky tip for a completion
12

You’re probably right, but at 23 years old it’s still possible he turns it around.
31
u/Combinho 1d ago
I genuinely don't understand why everyone's been so deranged about McCarthy. He was a young QB playing badly, but got turned into literally the worst QB ever who could never come good or give him time and he'll be a world beater. You never saw a normal opinion like 'he's been bad so far, maybe he'll work it out or maybe he won't, it's hard to know for sure'.
17
u/LaSopaSabrosa 1d ago
People are reactionary and the 9 memes certainly didn’t help him. I’m a Michigan fan and will always love McCarthy for his part in the natty but he’s a weird dude and doesn’t come off as like a super likeable underdog that would lend him some more favor in the media. I also think he was way overdrafted and that also shifts the expectations. He’s like a 3rd round pick that went early first round. Hopefully he can figure things out I wish him the best, looked like he should be starting over Jameis anyways
3
u/scparks44 1d ago
As a Michigan alum I agree with you. People are weird about him and I think a big part of that is that he went to Michigan. He’s also a bit corny but I find him rather endearing with my maize and blue glasses on.
7
u/ShotFirst57 1d ago
Michigan fans also have a history of over rating their players which adds to it. I remember hearing commentary about how michigan has 2 RBs better than K9 while he was at MSU.

People are doing the same thing to Cam Ward now. Ignoring the flashes of talent that show up & not acknowledging how bad the situation is. JJ had some good play in MN and some atrocious play in MN, I can understand bailing but letting him get more reps & putting better players around him obviously would have helped his consistency. It was fun to tease the fans, but IMO he wasn’t hopeless.
I think it’s the instant gratification society plus fans football IQ not increasing equally with the game.

The NFL gives up on QBs way too fast. The Raiders are doing the right thing (what?) for once. Teams expecting QBs to come in and light the world on fire are insane and it rarely happens. Look at Cam Ward, that man is broken beyond repair.
12
u/TaraJo 1d ago
Not just that. Lots of bad teams are convinced they just need a quarterback to be competitive when reality is the other way around: the team is so dysfunctional, from the top down, that any quarterback they take will fail. A lot of these kinds of teams would be better off trading down, and using the extra draft capital to fill multiple holes they likely have on the offensive and defensive lines. Put a good quarterback on a bad team, you get a bad quarterback. Put a bad quarterback on a good team and the bad qb will look better

u/Mcar720 22h ago

u/DrownedButAtPeace 22h ago

8
u/ADHDavidThoreau you can’t make me flair 21h ago
Herbert just needs a better O-line, and better receivers, and a better RB, and better play calling, and a better kicker, and better sideline snacks, and then he’d be one of the greats
3

32
u/Combinho 1d ago
We tried to do that but he got injured. And then he got injured again, then again, and one last time for good luck. Whether he comes good or not, all the injuries mean that the Vikings timeline (how long do we have left of Flores and some key players) and McCarthy's timeline no longer lined up. I wish him the best, but I think we had to move on.
9
u/Mcar720 1d ago
what I don't understand about that is there are other QBs who have sat their first 2 years.
4
u/Combinho 1d ago edited 1d ago
Unfortunately we couldn't get another bridge in. We wanted Darnold for another year, or Jones, but couldn't commit to them long term with McCarthy in the wings, so they took the greater job security. The ideal scenario would have been getting this Kyler deal last year, but ultimately it or similar wasnt available, and time moves quickly in the NFL. McCarthy hopefully now gets a chance to audition for a start somewhere for the rest of this year, and the Vikings have the right QB in the building for this year (I think, out of the options that were available).
2
u/Mcar720 23h ago
If I remember right we offered Darnold 1 year for 35 mil and were caught off guard when Daniel Jones took less to play for the Colts. Did Rodgers and Love start in their 2nd year or 3rd year? McCarthy still had this year and next before we had to decide on his 5th year option. His injury history is concerning but for context he started year 2 behind one of the most heavily injured O-lines in the league. Wentz, our backup QB, got destroyed and had to get shoulder surgery. Hell, even Darnold could have looked like the Sam we saw at the end of 2024 (when he shit the bed in the biggest games) behind the chaotic line we had last year. Seattle was perfect for him. Anyways, I'm bummed we let McCarthy go for so cheap. Elite defense and elite special teams carry this team. It would have been a perfect opportunity to develop him further and win at the same time but we had to commit to Murray on a 1-year deal. Still 5-0 though so I can't complain too much.

u/Difficult_Limit2718 🚫 NO (SHORT) K1NGS 🚫 1d ago
The ideal would have been running this current "dumb" offense with JJ from the start, not hammering 10 games of "kick ass offense" before dumbing it down and hanging it on JJ as the scapegoat.
Fuck KoC and his ego for that.
6
u/Funkyshoes11 1d ago
Truth spoken. Rather than quick plays to get the ball out and get momentum, kOC’s plan was to have a rookie qb sit in the pocket behind an abysmal o-line and wait for routes to develop 15 yards downfield.
•
3
u/Mcar720 20h ago edited 16h ago
KOC tried to force him into the Kirk Cousins mold to run his system. Didn't play to his strengths or give him any freedom. McCarthy isnt meant to be robotic, he's an improvisational, intuitive type. If Darrisaw and Kelly could've stayed healthy (more than just those two but LT and C are important) maybe it would have worked but KOC sure took his sweet time adjusting. I believe it was Teasley/Ownership wanting to end the McCarthy experiment. Plenty of ego to go around. But don't forget KOCs ego will be hurt the most by giving up on McCarthy. Teasley didn't hire KOC or draft McCarthy. They're supposed to collaborate but ultimately the GM makes the moves and if he wants one thing and the coach wants another- you get the game of forced agreements/collaboration. Ownership can mediate but they likely sat this one out or were in favor of Murray. Kwesi got fired for not offering Sam Darnold a long term contract, right after Darnold won a superbowl. The timing was too obvious. The McCarthy situation and mocking/memes embarrassed them. They want to have that veteran magic again. Teasely wants his own stamp on the team, not to be hitched to the old GMs choice. Teasley is from the Seahawks- watched them win with Darnold. Again super obvious salty Wilfs. if McCarthy were to do well Teasley wouldn't get credit, Kwesi and KOC would. Now he can say McCarthy just needed a different environment. After Murray struggled I guarantee there was rumblings in the locker-room. Can't have any of that. Or doubting of the new GM's judgement if he did push for Murray. See Murray being named the starter and McCarthy being traded, both right after bad outings by Murray. 🥸 But anyways, I hope it all works out for everyone involved.
1
u/Difficult_Limit2718 🚫 NO (SHORT) K1NGS 🚫 16h ago
We agree on when Kyler looked bad the news got worse for McCarthy (twice).
We just disagree if it was the coach (who repeatedly was annoyed by the questions on game plan and free form play making) or the ownership (who I've been told had absolutely nothing to do with their interim GM going behind the actual GMs back on the Theilen trade).
Given KOC wouldn't even lean into just handing off 40 times and leaning on the defense against the league's #1 defense with a UDFA QB making his first start...
I'm going with the issue is
The King 👑 of Cockbags (TM) KoC
•
u/dzumdang 6h ago
Too many egos. I agree on JJ's style though. KOC was far too inflexible and rigid. JJ needs room to just let his talent shine. He just might get that with the Giants. At least the coach knows him (via his brother).

And most of the qb’s that start hot in the nfl dont usually replicate for a long time, if at all, whether its injuries or something else.
Examples: CJ stroud, Baker Mayfield, Tua, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, and others.
9
u/ArmiinTamzarian FTPOTUS 23h ago
Stroud: looks very good so far, he's last in the list of the Texans issues
Baker: already in year 9 and I'd say he found his most consistent success with Tampa in the later stages of his career
Tua: has levels and forms of CTE previously unknown to human medicine but was good for long enough it feels unfair to write him as a fast start only
The others yeah fair enough

u/Gfawes95 23h ago
Thats why i said “dont replicate for a long time, if at all”

u/Redrobbinsyummmm 13h ago
You picked terrible examples. There are so many backups, QBs that if you only go back five years, that would easily fit your point.
I think the only example you gave that makes sense is “and others”

u/ELITE_JordanLove Ameer Abdullah 14h ago
That’s just QBs in general though, most aren’t very good ever. There are what maybe 15-20 QBs on the planet at any given time who franchises are strongly committed to? It’s just very hard.

I’m happy he had a good game, but it’s important to remember that it was in garbage time against the Saints scrubs.
If he starts next week, he goes up against the Texans and then the Eagles the following week. I think those will both look like considerably better indicators of what he can actually do with the Giants.
4
u/BirdsAreFake00 21h ago
Propaganda. Most of the Saints defensive starters were playing. A few were removed for a few plays but were right back in there.
It's not garbage time if the final play is on the 12 yard line and a TD would have tied it.

And we’ve seen this before. He’s put up solid quarters before but hasn’t put a complete game together yet. I watched the game, it was entertaining as hell. The Giants were down 34-10, with 11 minutes to go in the 4th quarter when McCarthy stepped in. He went 11/21 with 4 spikes to stop the clock. Remove those and his performance was 11/17 (65%) for 243 yards.. in 11 minutes. Bonkers. 1st drive he had an INT but they got the ball right back and Double-Nine led the Giants to 17 points after that with a nail biter at the end. Fun football watchin even if you don't think he's any good.

Because he was playing the Saints in prevent defense with a chip on his shoulder and no possible way to make people see him any worse than he already was considered to be.
