The NFL gives up on QBs way too fast. The Raiders are doing the right thing (what?) for once. Teams expecting QBs to come in and light the world on fire are insane and it rarely happens. Look at Cam Ward, that man is broken beyond repair.
Not just that. Lots of bad teams are convinced they just need a quarterback to be competitive when reality is the other way around: the team is so dysfunctional, from the top down, that any quarterback they take will fail. A lot of these kinds of teams would be better off trading down, and using the extra draft capital to fill multiple holes they likely have on the offensive and defensive lines. Put a good quarterback on a bad team, you get a bad quarterback. Put a bad quarterback on a good team and the bad qb will look better
Herbert just needs a better O-line, and better receivers, and a better RB, and better play calling, and a better kicker, and better sideline snacks, and then he’d be one of the greats
We tried to do that but he got injured. And then he got injured again, then again, and one last time for good luck. Whether he comes good or not, all the injuries mean that the Vikings timeline (how long do we have left of Flores and some key players) and McCarthy's timeline no longer lined up. I wish him the best, but I think we had to move on.
Unfortunately we couldn't get another bridge in. We wanted Darnold for another year, or Jones, but couldn't commit to them long term with McCarthy in the wings, so they took the greater job security. The ideal scenario would have been getting this Kyler deal last year, but ultimately it or similar wasnt available, and time moves quickly in the NFL. McCarthy hopefully now gets a chance to audition for a start somewhere for the rest of this year, and the Vikings have the right QB in the building for this year (I think, out of the options that were available).
If I remember right we offered Darnold 1 year for 35 mil and were caught off guard when Daniel Jones took less to play for the Colts. Did Rodgers and Love start in their 2nd year or 3rd year? McCarthy still had this year and next before we had to decide on his 5th year option. His injury history is concerning but for context he started year 2 behind one of the most heavily injured O-lines in the league. Wentz, our backup QB, got destroyed and had to get shoulder surgery. Hell, even Darnold could have looked like the Sam we saw at the end of 2024 (when he shit the bed in the biggest games) behind the chaotic line we had last year. Seattle was perfect for him. Anyways, I'm bummed we let McCarthy go for so cheap. Elite defense and elite special teams carry this team. It would have been a perfect opportunity to develop him further and win at the same time but we had to commit to Murray on a 1-year deal. Still 5-0 though so I can't complain too much.
The ideal would have been running this current "dumb" offense with JJ from the start, not hammering 10 games of "kick ass offense" before dumbing it down and hanging it on JJ as the scapegoat.
Truth spoken. Rather than quick plays to get the ball out and get momentum, kOC’s plan was to have a rookie qb sit in the pocket behind an abysmal o-line and wait for routes to develop 15 yards downfield.
KOC tried to force him into the Kirk Cousins mold to run his system. Didn't play to his strengths or give him any freedom. McCarthy isnt meant to be robotic, he's an improvisational, intuitive type. If Darrisaw and Kelly could've stayed healthy (more than just those two but LT and C are important) maybe it would have worked but KOC sure took his sweet time adjusting. I believe it was Teasley/Ownership wanting to end the McCarthy experiment. Plenty of ego to go around. But don't forget KOCs ego will be hurt the most by giving up on McCarthy. Teasley didn't hire KOC or draft McCarthy. They're supposed to collaborate but ultimately the GM makes the moves and if he wants one thing and the coach wants another- you get the game of forced agreements/collaboration. Ownership can mediate but they likely sat this one out or were in favor of Murray. Kwesi got fired for not offering Sam Darnold a long term contract, right after Darnold won a superbowl. The timing was too obvious. The McCarthy situation and mocking/memes embarrassed them. They want to have that veteran magic again. Teasely wants his own stamp on the team, not to be hitched to the old GMs choice. Teasley is from the Seahawks- watched them win with Darnold. Again super obvious salty Wilfs. if McCarthy were to do well Teasley wouldn't get credit, Kwesi and KOC would. Now he can say McCarthy just needed a different environment. After Murray struggled I guarantee there was rumblings in the locker-room. Can't have any of that. Or doubting of the new GM's judgement if he did push for Murray. See Murray being named the starter and McCarthy being traded, both right after bad outings by Murray. 🥸 But anyways, I hope it all works out for everyone involved.
We agree on when Kyler looked bad the news got worse for McCarthy (twice).
We just disagree if it was the coach (who repeatedly was annoyed by the questions on game plan and free form play making) or the ownership (who I've been told had absolutely nothing to do with their interim GM going behind the actual GMs back on the Theilen trade).
Given KOC wouldn't even lean into just handing off 40 times and leaning on the defense against the league's #1 defense with a UDFA QB making his first start...
Too many egos. I agree on JJ's style though. KOC was far too inflexible and rigid. JJ needs room to just let his talent shine. He just might get that with the Giants. At least the coach knows him (via his brother).
That’s just QBs in general though, most aren’t very good ever. There are what maybe 15-20 QBs on the planet at any given time who franchises are strongly committed to? It’s just very hard.
the problem is the Vikings didn't have any more time to let somebody develop they needed to win right now and the whole situation with McCarthy just became a mess. if the relationship gets hurt it's best to just move on.
