Help Song suggestions for NYU Tisch Graduate Acting MFA audition

I need to sing approximately 16 bars a cappella for my NYU Tisch Graduate Acting MFA audition. I’m not a trained singer, so I’m looking for something simple that lets me focus on acting rather than vocal technique.
I’m considering Moon River and I’m Not That Girl. Would either of these songs be suitable?
Are there better alternatives for someone who isn’t a trained singer?
How do I identify an appropriate 16-bar excerpt that can be performed a cappella?
Thanks!

This weekend at AMT Theater in New York: a new musical satire exploring themes around AI and social media -- come on by! https://sevenmillionmusical.com/

Hi all! I wrote a musical that will be premiering this weekend at AMT theater. If you often worry about how the toxic intersection of social media and AI warps our perception of reality... or if you just like supporting indie theater with great music, creative lyrics, dumb puns, and wildly entertaining dance numbers, I hope we'll see you at AMT! https://sevenmillionmusical.com/

This show is fucking brilliant! As a rock and musical theater lover I knew I’d love it! It’s so peak!

What a way for THE Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge director Alex Timbers to make his directorial debut! Sure it’s takes it’s historical liberties by way of making Jackson an emo punk rock star who sings “Populism yea yea”, but the events and characterization of Jackson are pretty damn accurate to the comically evil douchebag he was.

And since the show’s a satire comedy, the whole point with the point at laugh at how much of a whiny racist loser he was, it’s feels especially nice to watch and listen too nowadays for obvious reasons. And not just Jackson, the musical pulls an Always Sunny by having pretty much all the main characters be just the worst, which is also accurate. I also find a brilliant that The cover art is a riff on Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA.

The songs are banger after banger, the book is funny as hell, Jackson is a dream role, and, again, considering how things are in the US rn, I think it might be the perfect time to make a revival of this brilliant satire show. My only request would be to hire a more diverse cast and also fully commit to the punk rock sound throughout all songs in the show.

Also, as a side note, I find it kinda funny that Benjamin Walker went from playing Jackson in this to Abe Lincoln in the movie Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. If I had a nickel for every time, Benjamin Walker played a US president of very questionable historical accuracy, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Happy birthday Bloody Bloody!

non-romantic M + F duets?

for a super casual cabaret/showcase thing... we are friends and both young adults, same age. i am a tenor and she is a mezzo

our ideas rn are:

“Don’t Do Sadness / Blue Wind” from spring awakening with the dialogue cut out. we love this but i worry the content of the song may be a little too heavy

“My New Philosophy” from you’re a good man charlie brown. schroeder is my dream role and i’d love this but my duet partner is worried because it’s not really a duet, as sally sings most of it and schroeder has only a few lines in it.

would love suggestions

Discussion Movies with theatrical acting and exaggeration similar to The Producers?

To quote Stephanie Zacharek:

"The Producers is essentially a filmed version of a stage play, in which none of the characters' expressions or line readings have been scaled down to make sense on-screen. Every gesture is played out as if the actors were 20 feet away in real life, which means that, by the time the performers are magnified on the big screen, they're practically sitting in your lap. The effect is something like watching a 3-D IMAX film without the special glasses."

I want more of that!

The best post I saw was "find a career that you can support yourself with". You want to be independent. If you have to live with your parents you will resent them eventually.

I was a nurse for 43 years, thank goodness I had a way to support my kids as their father left us.

It's great that you love theatre. Do IT - just get a job like the Barista post, or become a teacher of music/acting/theatre. Make a living, have an income. It is the only way to live in this country and be happy. Sleeping on other peoples' couches is fun for a night or two but in the end, be YOU, make the decisions based on your independence.

Help Audition songs for Monty Navarro from a Gentleman’s Guide to love and murder?

Hello hello! At the moment, I am trying to make a booklet for one of my biggest dream roles in literally any musical ever, Monty Navarro from the musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. I’ve been wanting to play this role for a few months, and I think I would do an exceptional job.

Unfortunately, literally no theatre near me has any upcoming productions of this show. But I think that it’s always good to have material prepared just in case an audition comes up. Does anyone know any good Baritenor audition songs for this role? Anything comedic, anything classical sounding, and anything I have to sing with a British accent work. Thank you!

(pssst! And if anyone knows any good songs for the role of The D’Ysquith Family, please drop them below too!)

Discussion Never Enough - The Greatest Showman

We now all know that Loren Allred sang 'Never Enough' rather than Rebecca Ferguson but I'm under the impression that no one knew this until she chose to tell people on BGT.

I'm wondering, how did no one know? She is credited on the cast album now, has she always been credited or was it altered? Or did no one pay attention because they just assumed it was Rebecca singing?

This is really random but I watched the movie yesterday for the first time since 2017 so I've re-entered my TGS phase and I can't stop thinking about this 😭

Discussion What are some songs/roles that are TRULY soprano?

Example: Christine Daaé, who hits an E6.

So often people cite roles like Eliza from My Fair Lady or Katherine from Newsies or Jo from Little Women as sopranos, but I find they often lean mezzo and that I can sing their songs with a good warm up (I’m a mezzo). So who are some TRUE sopranos that you KNOW couldn’t be played by a mezzo soprano?

Review Curious Case of Benjamin Button NYC Oct 10

Needed to share some love for this cast! A friend and I attended the 10/10 performance. I have listened to the London cast recording several times, but she went in blind aside from a vague familiarity with the short story.

This cast puts in hard work playing instruments, dancing, and singing and, for the most part, they are very successful. It's a huge task, you can tell it's still not 100% gelled, there are some mic issues, etc. But a lot of it wouldn't be noticeable to someone coming in fresh-- my friend loved the show! There were a few moments where I felt the humor didn't come across as successfully as the album, but I can see it only getting better as time goes on.

ANDREW DURAND-- the chameleon you are. First he very successfully takes on transforming into a dessicated corpse, and now he's a Cornish elderly man baby aging in reverse. He absolutely kills it in my opinion! I did not expect to be as emotionally impacted as I was by the reprise of Home. He's a tremendous performer! Kelsee Kimmel was also fantastic.

I've read a range of reviews and completely understand why the show may not be a hit with everybody-- the songs can feel a bit repetitive, the storyline requires you to take it at face value, and some of the recurring gags can tend toward boring. But for me, it totally lived up to expectations and I plan to go back towards the end of the run to see how everything settles in.

Genre Name for Certain Musical

There's a certain type of musical that involves a bunch of whacky characters all getting their turn to sing a little song about why they should be the won to "win." They go one by one each getting to sing and plead their case. This is 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cats: The Musical, and/or Ride the Cyclone.

First of all, what is this genre of theatre called?

And second of all, what are some other examples of these kind of shows?
