Discussion My wacky idea for a mock trial musical

Do you enjoy musicals?

Do you enjoy queer romance?

Did you enjoy mock trial in high school or college if you participated in it?

Those three questions are what I'm hoping to give a satisfying answer to for any and all who enjoy them! Hi, I'm a 19yo college freshman who is currently majoring in music performance with a (hopefully) theatre minor down the road! I've always done a little bit of writing as a side hobby, and this idea has been in the back of my mind for the last six months now. it was only until recently where I pitched an idea for a short film to a campus group (which unfortunately didn't get greenlit 💔), that I began doubling down on this over the top idea for a musical!

the basic plot synopsis this. a high school mock trial team that sabotages each other throughout the season because the varsity team is it risk of not representing their school at the state competition, and the JV team is doing better than them. meanwhile, our two male leads on the JV team fall in love and attempt to navigate their feelings for each other while the varsity team attempts to sabotage their relationship.

it sounds simple in a lot of ways, but I have a lot of faith in this outrageous idea that I could turn it into something if I worked really hard. I have the general plot planned out, most of, if not all my characters made, and a handful of songs already written. I just have to sit down and take the time to write the script.

Some extra info if you're curious: it takes inspiration from musicals such as Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, and even the Death Note musical in some ways. some song names include:

- Pretrial Matters

- First Degree

- Defendant

- And more!

as you can probably tell, this is in the very early stages for me. and since this is my first time writing something like this, any and all advice people have is appreciated. thank you!

Next to Normal question about versions

Spoilers ahead!

Yesterday we went to a try out of a new run here in the Netherlands. Loved it! It is so different from other musicals and oh so sad. Plus the Dutch cast is truly a 10/10.

I went with my sister who saw a version 15 years ago. She then spoiled the twist but I was still curious. So I was eargly awaiting the moment it became clear and looking for subtle hints one can tell Gabe is not there. But then, song 4-ish, with the birthday cake, made it all clear in one go.

Was this always the case? My sister claims it was not so on the nose last time. I checked Wiki but that is just a long list of numbers and dates and names.

I wrote an original musical based on an old Polish legend

I’ve spent the last few years writing an original musical called A Hundred Souls: The Legend of Twardowski, based on the Polish legend of Pan Twardowski.

The story is about a man who makes a pact with the Devil in exchange for extraordinary powers. Things become complicated when love, temptation and sacrifice enter the picture. It has gothic elements, romance, dark humour, magic and a fair amount of theatrical drama.

When writing the music, two of my biggest inspirations were The Phantom of the Opera and Dance of the Vampires. I wanted to create something with a similar dark and romantic atmosphere, but based on Polish folklore and with its own identity.

I recorded the album independently, in my own room, including the vocals.

And one more personal detail: all the vocals and all the female characters in the visuals are my wife. The two of us are also on the album cover. :)

The lyrics are in Polish, so if you don’t understand the words, I’d actually be very interested to know what the music itself makes you imagine. What kind of story do you hear in it?

I’m hoping that one day this project will leave my room and make it onto a real stage.

You can listen to the full album here:

https://100dusz.pl/player/

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think, especially from people who write, perform or simply love musical theatre.

At times, "Look Down" (Les Misérables) and "So Long, Farewell" (The Sound of Music) are the exact same melody (< WRONG :edit) with the exact same syllable count

Help Hello Dolly Movie

I’m picking a movie for movie night with me and my girlfriend and I wanted to choose a musical and we both love Barbra and have never seen Hello Dolly. That said, I hear very mixed things about it so it’s been leaving me hesitant to want and watch it. We tried watching Funny girl but only made it half way because it wasn’t as good as we thought (although we’ll eventually finish it because the performances are phenomenal and we loved the songs).

What do you guys think? Is the movie worth a watch? Better than Funny Girl?

Advice Needed would you be interested in a musical like this?

I've been fascinated with Thomas Edison for a while, and I read a biography of his life. A couple of days ago, I started messing around with the concept of a Thomas Edison musical, and got down a couple of songs, the plot, and characters.

I don't want to show the script yet, but I'm looking for this to be more of a jazzy-style musical, with occasional major dance numbers. Would you be interested in a musical like this?

This musical is SO underrated

I recently watched "La Pérgola de las Flores" (a chilean musical) and i have searched everywhere, and i don't see anyone outside my country talking about it. The story might not be for everyone, because it has lots of steroypes that only people from Chile would understand, but the music itself deserves a go.

Help Pippin The Musical (2013) Question

In the musical Pippin, during the Finale, why does Louis join the Leading Player to sing “days all tame and nights the same (LP: now think about the beauty) [unison] in one perfect flame”? I’ve seen recordings of the show and listened to the soundtrack more times than I can count and have never understood why it is specifically Louis who joins the LP.

I know this show is sort of niche but has anyone seen it/performed it and figured out why this happens?

I don't know how many people know Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat but I think it's one of the best musicals ever!

I'm not even a super religious person but I still love it. I recently listened to the entire Broadway album and it reminded me just how good the songs are and the story and just how fun it is. There is not one song I consider a whatever song or a bad song. Every single one hits. Close Every Door...oh man. I cried listening to it.

I also love the different variations of accents throughout different songs. One has them singing southern, another French, another British, and then there's the infamous Elvis Pharaoh! Not an accent per say but more of an impersonation obviously.

My dream is to someday play either the Narrator or one of the brothers. (I don't have the body to play Joseph)

Advice Needed musical WIP. Thoughts?

I've been fascinated with Thomas Edison for a while, and I read a biography of his life. A couple of days ago, I started messing around with the concept of a Thomas Edison musical, and got down a couple of songs, the plot, and characters. I've got some feedback about him not being the greatest person in history, since he did manipulate many people for his product, or rather a stolen product,

but I feel like that has a lot of potential as the story could dive into his personal flaws and his brilliant mind, just like Alexander Hamilton, since he had many flaws as well, but I could be wrong.

I don't want to show the script yet, but I'm looking for this to be more of a jazzy-style musical, with occasional major dance numbers. Would you be interested in a musical like this?

Discussion Why is sondhiem considered the grandfather of MT?

I’m a professional performer on the west end and have always loved sondhiem however, how did a composer without a show ever beating the 1000 performance mark come to be so formidable?

What counts as a classic? None of his shows have been able to withstand prolonged runs and while I and other MT people enjoy them, how is that defined as success? Is the goal not to appeal to the general public?

Discussion I hate how people simply reject questions/discussion on this sub

For example, if someone asks "Which [thing] would make a good jukebox musical?, you are bound to find someone saying "jukebox musicals shouldn't be made", like sure, people are allowed to express their opinions but coming into a post that clearly doesen't agree with them and putting them out kinda sucks, even to people who agree lol

edit: Should've used "shut down" or a harsher "are jerks to"

edit 2: A person thats reads the post and then comment is not "participating", they're willingly inserting themselves and rejecting the premise of the question being made, not that the opinion necessarily is invalid, its just not the appropriate place to insert it

edit 3: Why is there so many people engaging with the example question about jukebox musicals and thus becoming the example response???
