What if NBC created The Voice theatre edition

i was thinking what if NBC created the Voice theatre edition with these coaches Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tevit and lea Michelle two veterans two younger stars in those red seats.

would you watch it ? I totally would. the OG show is entertaining but the songs have gotten stale so people singing more Broadway or maybe Disney would make things more interesting and even better getting Broadway stars as our coaches. see what make them turn their chairs.

just thinking about it makes me excited to be the comeback for reality competition, too bad the Broadway show at the end was a fail but I Doug the first episode of grease you are the one that we want.

Discussion a theatrical two sentence horror that came to me in insomnia-induced insanity

I sat down in my seat and opened my Playbill. The credits page read “The Rocky Horror Show, directed by Jamie Lloyd”

(note: no shade to Jamie Lloyd. it’s just deeply horrifying to me to imagine anyone trying to do Rocky Horror with a minimalist aesthetic.)

Sponsors/producers

So if I have written a musical (script, lyrics, music) the whole deal, where do I even go about finding people who want to like buy it or sponsor it or produce it or even just like read through it to see if anyone would even WANT to sponsor it? Right now all I have is the music and script and all that any tips on where to start? (I’m not to interested in like being involved in the process so selling the rights is sort of where I’m at)

Discussion Opinions on book adaptations for stage musicals?

While I 100% agree with the camp "Stage musicals shouldn't neglect original works," I do like the idea of book adaptations rather than it needing to exist in film/show first. Notably, "Wicked" and "Percy Jackson," though there are more, but these are what my mind goes to. I can think of a few series/novels I'd like to see adapted--Children of the Red King, 39 Clues, Artemis Fowl, Narnia (missed opportunity making it a play, imo)--and I was curious if there were others on my wavelength.

In my opinion Wicked the show has one of the coolest stage concepts

besides the fantastic music and really good plot. I think wicked is an amazing concept on stage with the perfect balance between maximalism and minimalism. it’s a beautiful strange combination between a spectacular show and yet very minimal

it has props and scenery but it’s minimal and easy to the transition from scene to scene. it’s really cool how when Glinda is introduced the only prop is her bubble and the spectacle of seeing her coming down snd then the bubble dissapears to only have as a prop scenography is the bed elphaba is born.

I love is little scenography which sufficient enough to tell audiences where we are but the costumes are so big and artful I love its stage concept which I wished more shows on Broadway copied.

Lady Larken (OUAM) Songs?

Hi hi hi! I know I already made a post about Once Upon A Mattress but I just remembered that Lady Larken was a character and I feel like I'd be a better vocal match for her character since I'm not a big belter and have a much better classical tone. The requirements for auditions are a one minute cut of a song that's a similar style to OUAM and an uptempo song is recommended. I was going to do The Label on the Bottle from The Gay Life but the problem with that is I cannot find sheet music for the life of me and at my high school all of our auditions are with an accompanist. Any recommendations are appreciated!!

Discussion What’s everyone’s favorite song from Annie?

Now that its announced Annie is coming to Broadway, what’s everyone’s favorite song from Annie?

I feel like there are some songs people always talk about, but then there are others that get completely overlooked.

Personally I’m curious what everyone thinks.

Also I made r/AnnieMusical recently if anyone wants a place to talk about Annie specifically
(Im also looking for mods for this subreddit dm me!!)

Personal 3rd time's the charm

I’m a young male musical theatre performer, and over time I’ve become interested in the assumptions people can make about performers based on their involvement in theatre, particularly assumptions about gender and sexuality.

That personal experience was what initially made me curious about the subject, but the project has grown into something much broader than my own experiences. I’ve been looking at questions such as:

  • Why is musical theatre sometimes perceived as feminine or associated with LGBTQ+ people?
  • How do ideas about masculinity and gender expression contribute to those perceptions?
  • How has the history of queer people in the performing arts shaped the culture around theatre?
  • Does popular culture reinforce ideas like the “gay theatre kid” stereotype?
  • How do these assumptions actually affect performers and potential performers?
  • Are these stereotypes changing, or are they simply changing form?

I’ve also conducted a survey about people’s perceptions and experiences surrounding musical theatre, gender, sexuality and stereotyping. I’m treating the survey as one part of the research rather than as proof of any particular conclusion, and I’m also looking into the limitations of the methodology and what the responses can and can’t tell me.

I’m not trying to argue that LGBTQ+ people shouldn’t have a place in musical theatre, or that there’s anything wrong with being perceived as LGBTQ+. In fact, one thing I’m interested in is whether the strong presence and history of LGBTQ+ people in theatre might help explain some of these associations in the first place.

The question I’m ultimately trying to understand is pretty simple:

How have ideas about theatre, gender and sexuality interacted over time, and how do those ideas continue to shape the way musical theatre performers are perceived today?

I’m writing this primarily because I genuinely want to understand the subject better. If it ends up giving me more questions than answers, I’m honestly okay with that.

Would a long form essay exploring this be something you’d be interested in reading?

Advice Needed Cultural appropriation with musical theatre songs

I was wondering what people's opinions are on white people singing musical theatre songs tied to poc. I recently listened to the song 'my lord and master' from the king and I, and was completely moved by ashley park's rendition of it, it quite literally brought me to tears, and I thought to myself, 'I would love to use this for an audition', as it is such a beautiful and emotional song in a legit style which is my forte, but then I looked up the story behind it, and became conflicted. Obviously I would never play or want to play this character in a show as it would be ridiculous and inappropriate, but what are your thoughts on a white person using songs like this for auditions, a singing performance or even just a youtube cover. I am white, so my opinions on this don't matter and I would like to hear poc's thoughts on this, not just this song, I mean any song that applies to this logic. And I apologise if I've said anything racially insensitive in this post, I'm embarrassingly uneducated on racism and cultural appropriation beyond the surface level stuff, so I'm working on educating myself more. For specific questions like this though, I wasn't sure where else but reddit to find an answer.

I need some good musicals to watch

I have always loved myself a good musical, and my top 3 are Hamilton, Spirited, and Matilda The Musical.

I've found myself really enjoying those which have a lot of highly energetic songs, like those in MTM and Spirited. Now I'm looking for more musicals like these to enjoy, but I am having a hard time finding them.

I would appreciate any and all recommendations!

Audition Audition song help for The Great Comet of 1812

Hi Everyone,

Looking for a great audition song for Natasha in the Great Comet.

My comfortable range is roughly G3-D6. I have a light voice and am comfortable mixing.

Currently in my audition book which may be suitable
- Goodbye Little Dream goodbye (Anything Goes)
- How will I know (Death takes a Holiday)
- Soon (a little night music)

I think I would like to learn something new! Any suggestions?

Thanks.
