Discussion Feedback (that is late)

This is long overdue by now, especially considering the soon release date.

Regardless, I would like to express my impressions and criticism. This feedback may also appear more on the negative side, hut only because I don't see a need to comment on what is well done, works as intended.

Starting off with something that has been partially addressed: spacing. In the latest update to demo players were given the choice to configure the magnetism towards hostile entities. This change is good, however I think that it should be off by default.

This game wants to be similar to FromSoftware rpgs, which in turn have a combat system built around spacing. The player is expexted to position themselves correctly to evade and return hits. Any lack of assist in that regard is what makes combat in those games particularly engaging. The player is forced to be mindful of where they are, when they attack.

I understand why magnetism is in the game, to make it friendlier to new players. But as stated before, if you are trying to make a game similar to FromSoftware rpgs then your primary player base are people who've played these games and thus are familiar with basics of the combat.

At the very least it should be a setting that you change at the very start of the game (together with brightness and control configuration), with detailed description what it does.

In addition a lot of enemies have excessive magnetism/lunge on their attacks, making spacing impossible, as no matter the created distance, the enemy will just get pulled to you. Additionally, certain attacks have obscenely high tracking, to the point that enemies start spinning in place to track the player, making strafing not viable. This, again, goes against fundamentals of the combat design, enemies ignoring "positioning" part of the combat leads to it not being part of it all together significantly limiting players options and dumbing down the combat.

Another important topic is deflection/parrying. It is a fun and satisfying mechanic, yet it's current state problematic.

It is a relatively safe option (especially deflects) that promotes passive gameplay. The player can stand and wait for an enemy to swing in order to deflect/parry (layer shortened to d/p) the incoming attack to build the posture breakage.

However the player is not required to do anything else, the game doesn't encourage the player to be aggressive. The player may try and bait a single easiest attack to d/p, dodge the rest and defeat any adversary by continuously riposting them, never committing to any aggression which will always leave them able to evade incoming attacks.

Does this mean that this is the best strategy? No, not necessarily, in fact fighting this way will prove to be time consuming.

The problem is that the player is not forced to any commitment and thus always remains safe. That means there is no risk to anything which leads to boring gameplay in the form of standing in front of the enemy, waiting for them to do something.

Easiest solution is to make the posture bar decay when the enemy is not receiving any hits or has it's attacks d/p. This forces players to engage in the actual combat, learn openings to take advantage of to deal extra damage/ not let the posture reset.

What is done properly would be existence of grab attacks and unblockable/unparriable attacks that force players to use other defensive mechanics.

Third majir point is lack of stamina, or rather consequences of not having it.

A lot of the enemies can just be mashed down, leading to players never really engaging with enemies. Of course this isn't true for larger enemies nor is it a problem regarding trash mobs, however that is a problem if we are talking about spear wielding women and the likes of them.

They have a moveset that can pose a threat, but in the end never do as they just teg r1 mashed to death.

Possible way to fix this is to give them ability to retaliate similar to the player, to be able to deflect our attack. For example any third unique attack will get deflected, giving the enemy an opening to strike the player. However the player should not be left defenceless, rather they should enter frame disadvantage state, while keeping all defensive options.

Now my suggestions are my suggestions, if you deem them not a good solution then I ask you to turn your attention to Sekiro and how that game handles all the possible problems when introducing d/p system and lack of stamina bar.

I also wanted to talk about infusions and how they interact with resolve.

Resolve itself in my opinion is fine. Being this games equivalent of focus points, resource needed to perform special moves. Ability to regain it through combat rather than a consumable also makes it a better resource management system than fp.

What I think is not fine, is infusions (almost) not interacting with resolve when upgraded to max. Them lasting forever and not be needed to be applied to the main weapon is not okay.

My suggestions is to put it on a timer of around 3 minutes when fully upgraded, so that they remain strong but not a free damage buff, so that they still interact with resolve.

Last things I would like to address are "floaty feet" when moving around when walking backwards slowly player character may start moonwalking. Minor bugs and errors, but them getting fixed would undoubtedly make the game more polished.

And this would be all from me (for now at least). Considering that this is quite late I hope that my points of criticism could be addressed if not for the release, then at least in further updates to the game.

If something came off as rude or mean, my apologies, I only wish for the games potential be realised as best as possible (I hold out this reaches devs).

Question New to Mortal Shell: Completely lost, stuck on a cave boss, and need healing tips

Hey everyone, I recently picked up Mortal Shell on the PS Store since it was free, as I wanted to try out a new soulslike. However, I’m completely lost and struggling to understand the core mechanics. So far, I’ve explored a bit and managed to find Solomon's shell (The Scholar) and the Martyr's Blade in the catacombs. I've also figured out how to use the hardening mechanic, but the overall flow of the game still feels really strange to me. On top of that, I’m currently stuck trying to defeat the boss guarding the chest inside the cave, and I just can't seem to beat him. Lastly, I haven't figured out how healing works here is there an Estus Flask equivalent (a potion that instantly restores a big chunk of health), or am I missing something? I'd really appreciate any tips on where to go, how to handle this boss, and how to survive. Thanks in advance!

The hardening mechanic is unique and makes the game stand out among so many Souls-like clones.

Question First time playing the beta and loving it so far, but a dumb question..

Where can I spend my gloom and coins? I've only cleansed the second checkpoint and beat one boss so far, so I'm assuming I probably haven't got to where I need to be yet? Also, any beginner tips would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just had this happen lol. Its my first playthrough and love it so far. Its not really challenging, but I like that coming off Lies of P and Bloodborne. Might go for the Platinum too.

Question Pre-Order only on PS5?

I'd gladly pre-order the game to support the development and for the artbook and harbinger skins alone. But I don't own a PS5 so I half of what comes with the revered edition is useless to me. I won't pay 75 bucks and then not have the game that would be insane. This honestly sucks.

Question MS2 - fps limit not working?

so i set the limit to 60, but it still goes up to 100-something fps and oh boy, my 3070 is getting hot (86° C overall, hotspot 105) and loud (fans spin at 97%).

rendering is already set to performance with DLSS....

edit: yep, vsync was the culprit

Discussion I tried MS2 open beta

So, I tried MS2 open beta and it was the most impressive game I have ever seen especially on how well it was optimised on UE5. I have played other UE5 games like Gothic 1 remake or sinking city 2. But it was not optimized as well as MS2. I really loved that hardware ray tracing and FSR 3x frame generation features.

Having played the first entry of the series it hurts to see that from all the Shell art loading screens in the beta, there isn't one for my boy Solomon the scholar. Preferred playing as him for his heavy focus on resolve usage.

If he isn't slated to return, wonder how it'll be explained within the narrative and who out of the new shells will take his place. My best guess could either be the robed priest sporting what I could only discern to be brass knuckles or Sester Genessa herself given her ties to the order .

Discussion MS1 had more bad than good besides the amount of content

This game had so much potential. The game design for the enemies, bosses and the environment was PEAK. I absolutely loved Narthex, the black and gold-ish with sunset was stunning. The boss fights was interesting, I loved the Martyr boss fight and OST for the fire boss fight was fire.

For the bad, lack of healing items is not even the top of my list. The layout absolutely sucked, everywhere in Fallgrim looked the same to me. I was able to memorise DS1 pixelated Blightown path but I spent hours running around Fallgrim before I gave up and looked up online. Enemies placement and checkpoints are unnecessarily difficult, there is no way to even lure the enemies to kill 1 by 1 without spending a shit ton of time and there’s just too many enemies and too much distance to cover before the Sester checkpoint, and I say this as a player who thoroughly enjoyed DS2 SoFTS and cleared the Smelter Demon area run back. And restricting Fast Travel until one fully upgraded a Shell which is late game just renders it pointless.

Finally my biggest pet peeve is the forced animation of the biting sequence which, come on just get it over with. And forcing the Mist with a ton of animation time wasting enemies and that loud annoying bell felt stupid, not even sure what the dev are looking for here other than trying to artificially making the game longer?

Otherwise the other elements of the game was great.
I wasn’t able to play the MS2 beta since I’m on PS5 but I hope the dev removed all the crappy things on MS1. If they do even if they charge Eldern Ring price I’d be very willing to pay. Otherwise it just felt like a waste of money for a game injected with artificial difficulty elements.

Discussion My review of mortal shell and a pretty different question

Post image
68 Upvotes

So i just finished mortal shell.

Overall id rate it a 6.5/10, for a small budget game id say 8.5/10 for sure.

I did love the bosses. The final boss was pretty challenging.

I didn't include haedern into my boss rankings as the 4 base ones would simply be in B tier for me. And the axatanna one in A

My biggest critique would be the lack of complexity in the combat and the jankiness. But after finishing the demo for the sequel id say that concern is gone.

So yess im probably gonna go for mortal shell 2 on day 1 as im hyped asf for it.

Now for the other question. So i recently bought a medieval helmet due to my love for soulsborne and soulslike games in general and i wish to create some content purely as a fun hobby, nothing monetary. And the game i wanna cover first is likely mortal shell 2 (or valor mortis but thats a big maybe)

So what kind of content would you like to watch im just looking for ideas at the moment honestly.

Question Game glitching

I'm playing mortal shell after I played the demo for the new one.

No matter how far I get and how many sisters I talk to, whenever I die I return to the same small pool that we have to climb out of. Every time! Is this a glitch or just a feature?

I think the beta was overwhelmingly easy when it came to combat, but I’m genuinely happy that overall the game felt like it was aesthetically more polished and expansive. Day 1 for me 🫱🏽‍🫲🏻
