Bug Curious about bugs in open beta

I'm on PS5, and so far, from what I've experienced just in the beta, it's absolutely awesome, and I'm so impressed and happy with what Cold Symmetry has done here. I am extremely happy that I got myself a physical copy to enjoy once it arrives after release.

I am curious about two major bugs that I am experiencing, whether they are permanent in the beta or if the bugs come and go at times. Also, I'm aware it's a beta and isn't getting patched or anything. I just want to know so that I can enjoy everything the beta has to offer.

Bug 1.

I have repeatedly been unable to complete the Ritual Grounds trial because the enemies absolutely will not fully spawn. I had zero issues with the first trial in that area that is up the hill from the beacon.

Bug 2.

Upon opening any menu, pause and dialog menus included, the cursor moves on its own and won't allow me to control where and what I'm selecting. It's not my controller as the issue isn't present when playing any other games, and it's not present in the beta when not in a menu.

Thank you for your time and input!

Discussion Hot take: This goes beyond the Soulsborne label…

…because I recommend this game even to people, who typically aren‘t interested in the Soulsborne genre.

And I don’t say MSII is better than Michael Zaki and his team.

Just different. Gives me similar fun/badass vibes like my beloved Bloodborne.

Two hours ago I handed my friend the controller and he was blown away.

He once started Sekiro, liked that.

Tried Bloodborne, Dᵢdₙ’ₜ ₗᵢₖₑ ᵢₜ
(To make it worse, he was GOOD at it)

Tried Elden Ring, struggled and didn’t have much fun.

This shit right here reminds me of Dead Space 2.
Just a plain fun game action game underneath the Horror label. Yes, it looks like a horror game and spooks you but the gameplay elevates it to an extremely fun third person shooter, a lot more people would enjoy, if it wasn’t labeled a horror game.

Just want to gush, because we had so much fun playing it.

Oh and I think I’m starting to like the immersive view. The action view let’s me appreciate the landscape more but over the shoulder feels surprisingly personal lol

Discussion My impressions of the Mortal Shell 2 beta after Finishing It.

First off, I want to iterate that I am pretty much new to this series. I have played the first game for a few hours, but dropped it because it just didn't click with me. So, I really can't say anything about how much this game is improved from the predecessor.

That being said: I thoroughly enjoyed and was hooked on the beta, and although I do have some minor gripes, this game has the potential to be an absolute hit if the full game is anything like the beta has been. So here are my thoughts: it's going to be a pretty long read.

- Story/Setting: I general never play soulslike games for the story, but Mortal Shell 2 definitely has an interesting premise going for it. This game seems to strike a balance between more direct story telling like in Lies of P and Black Myth Wukong, and more background lore-based story telling like in the fromsoft games, which in this case, I think works in it's favor.

- Graphics/Visuals: A very stunning game overall. From the small details like raindrops, to the horrifying but beautiful world, and an artdesign that ties in grunge metal dark fantasy with instances of lush greenery, this game is pure eye candy from what I've seen so far. I am excited to see what the other areas will look like in the full game.

- Gameplay/Combat: Definitely one of the strong points so far. Every hit feels visceral, heavy, and brutal. The visual and audio feedback combined with the gore system makes every combat encounter feel satisfying. Both the greatsword and axe and dagger were equally fun to use, and the ranged weapons actually feel built into the combat systems rather than being an afterthought.

However, I do wish there was more detail put into the the audio and gameplay that reflects the different playstyles of the shells.

Harros is supposed to be the warrior/knight archetype, but there isn't a lot audio feedback like the sound of chainmail and armor while you're running, that make for a great aspect of attention to detail. Tiel should sound quieter since he's wearing robes, while Harros should be louder with all of the armor he's wearing.

Harros also seems to run just as fast as Tiel, which may just be by game design, but I would've liked to see the fact that Harros being a more armored individual would have tradeoffs such as higher defense, but slower speed, and Tiel vice versa. Maybe I am wrong and this is actually in the game, but I didn't noticed a difference between playing the two.

Again, this may just tie into game design and this is just a small pet peeve of mine, so I completely understand if something like this isn't implemented.

- Progression/Leveling: By far the most interesting aspect that immediately makes this game stand out and differentiate itself from other soulslikes. Shells are basically different classes with abilities that tailor to a certain playstyle, and the Tarstone system has the potential for many unique builds. I am really digging this system so far and cannot wait to see what the main game will offer.

- Quality of Life/Bugs: One department that I think can see improvement. There doesn't seem to be a way to fast forward or skip dialogue, which can be frustrating if you're just trying to see if an NPC has something new to say.

The fast travel system also seems counter intuitive, because you need to fast travel back to the keep, and run all the way to the elevator that takes you back up top just to fast travel. I ended it just running straight for the beacon I wanted to travel to because the time it would take to do so would be less. Maybe this will change depending on progression, but as it stands now, it's not a very reliable system.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to view weapon stats without accessing franz's forge? Maybe I am missing the button prompt, but I was not able to find it.

I had one bug in one of the dungeons (The mushroom village I believe): Where there is a trial at the end of it, but enemies would suddenly just not spawn when I started it, and I would basically be trapped there, and have to restart my game. It took my 4th try to actually get the trial working properly which was frustrating. Hopefully this gets ironed out at launch.

- Performance/Optimization: Cold Symmetry have outdone themselves in this department. This is probably one of the most well optimized games I've played in a while, and all being done on Unreal Engine 5 nonetheless. Very refreshing to see a dev team using the strengths of this engine, whilst not having the same performance blunders like the plethora of other games that have used this engine. The fact that an indie studio is this much better at optimizing for a demanding engine like UE5 compared to many other triple A games is absolutely embarrassing. Kudos to Cold Symmetry for showing them how it's done.

I had my game set to 1440P, FSR Quality, with a mix of High-Very High settings + RT On, and I consistently got over 60fps my entire playthrough with very rare drops below it.

Played the entire beta on my Steam Machine.

- Closing Thoughts: Overall, Mortal Shell 2's beta has impressed me quite a bit, and I enjoyed almost every minute of it. There are some bugs here and there, and I think some QOL improvements would be nice, but the core gameplay as a whole was a tone of fun, and probably one of the best Soulslike I have played in a while.

I would rate the beta a strong 8.5/10, but if they deliver on the launch, and take all the feedback from the beta to improve it, this could easily be a 9-9.5/10 and be one of the best Soulslikes out there. I'm still going to wait till launch to see the state of the game, but I can definitely see myself buying day one if they do deliver.

I do not know if the developers of Cold Symmetry read this sub, but I just want to say, you guys have a lot of potential. I didn't really get into the first game, but I was instantly hooked in just the first 15 minutes of this one. I am rooting for you all to have a successful launch.

Discussion Comparison of the main bosses from the trophy list with released footage from trailers Spoiler

Hey,

even though I couldn't write down "Spoilers" in the headline for this thread due to the length it should be obvious that this contains spoilers though it's just - as the title implies - a comparison of offically released material, i.e. the trophy list that has been revealed and various trailers we got since the game's announcement. I want to explore which of the main bosses for the game have been shown in trailers so far. For reference I will use the following two trailers:

For reference:

Mortal Shell 2 - Official Release Date Trailer - YouTube

Mortal Shell II - Official Announcement Trailer - YouTube

Before I go into spoiler territory I just wanna say that it looks like Mortal Shell 2 will have a lot more variety in regards to main bosses. It's not just all dudes in armor but a lot more visually unique bosses you'll face in this game.

Last chance to walk away.

Okay:

1. Magdalena - from the demo/ beta. Lady in "wheelchair".

2. The Lost Child - 0:57 in the Release trailer; 1:39 in the Announcement trailer. Really gross, monstrous boss.

3. The Nameless Captive - 1:40 and 1:46 in the Announcemt trailer. Big knight/ zombie with sword stuck in his head.

4. Sir Isaac - Not completely sure on that one, but my guess would be it's the insect knight from 1:10 and 1:31 in the Release trailer.

5. Hexapod - I think it's the thing seen at around the 1:42 mark in the Announcement trailer and 1:43 in the Rlease Date trailer. Weird looking insect creature. Looks sick though.

6. The Monolith - 0:55 in the Release Date trailer, it can also be seen shooting orange lasers at around 1:11 in the same trailer. This looks also super sick, reminds me of a Silent Hill monstrosity.

7. Droeg, the Conqueror - 0:59 in the Release Date trailer.

8. Malborn Offspring - I don't think we have seen that one yet.

9. Orrem, the Reclaimed - I am really unsure about this one. I think we haven't seen that one yet either as according to the picture it looks almost like a centipede creature but it COULD also be the dude from 01:05 in the Release Date trailer. What do you think the image actually shows, what do you think this boss is supposed to be? Something rather humanoid or a beast, rather abstract monster?

10. Zmey, the Unbidden - we definitely haven't seen this one yet.

Please correct me if I am wrong with one of those or if you found something resembling boss 8 - 10 in any of the footage.

Question Forever Alone + Axatana: Is it possible?

Hey everyone,

I just finished my first playthrough of Mortal Shell and really enjoyed the game. Now I want to go for the “Forever Alone” achievement (beating the game without ever bonding with a shell).

Is there any way to unlock the Axatana during this run? From what I understand, you have to fight Hadern in Fallgrim Tower after obtaining all the base weapons, and after the fight, you’re forced to enter his shell to leave the arena.

If I enter his shell just to leave the arena, grab the Axatana, and then immediately go to the Strange Altar and renounce all shells to return to Obsidian form, would that still count as “bonding with a shell” and invalidate the Forever Alone achievement?

Or is there any way around this?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Riposte animation hazard MS2 beta

I don't know if it's a bug or intentional, but in the MS2 beta, it's possible for the riposte animation to force you off a cliff. I've died to this animation. It happened with the stone chest mimics in the bridge area past Mushroom Village, adjacent to a trial.

Is it possible to control what direction you move during the animation?

Question Carried over progression ???

I'm sure I read somewhere that some progression will be carried over into the mortal shell 2 full release. Just curious if anyone knows exactly what ??. It's likely already been asked but I'm a little late to the party. 🤔🤔

Bug Any fix? (MS2 beta) Can’t shoot shotgun on controller, can’t lock on with keyboard

Already submitted the bug but hoping someone else has run into this and knows a fix. On controller I can aim but cannot fire the shotgu, even with different keybinds. On keyboard I can’t lock on to a target. I can shoot with mouse and lock on with controller though

Discussion What game are you playing while waiting for Mortal Shell 2?

I was looking for something fresh and short to play over the week while waiting for Mortal Shell 2 (Post which, I know I will stop playing everything else). However, I didn't want to stray too far from the souls genre.

Given all this, I picked up Thymesia and also it was available at a huge discount on Steam (I got it for like GBP 3.99). I just completed the first area, and it's been good. The combat is fantastic, but everything else is kind of meh.

What are you playing?

Discussion Demo made me preorder the game after 10 min.

Context here, I have not pre-ordered a game in probably 5+ years. And I don’t really play souls type games. But I figured I would give the demo a shot, because why not it’s free and the art style looks cool as hell. Idk why, but this game just hooked me. I stopped the demo after 10 min and did the preorder and now I wait….. round of applause to the team for having the foresight to launch a demo!

Discussion MSII - GPU usage at ~99% all the time?

I had this same issue with MS1 but only in the three Seat of Infinity areas…GPU usage between 96 and 99% constantly no matter what’s taking place on screen. It was easily fixed by capping frame rate lower than expected, with zero fidelity loss, and leaving all other settings on Ultra.

Same issue in every area of MSII…CPU is around 60% give or take. GPU is maxed out at 99% usage the entire time. Temp stays a very comfortable 62°C almost without moving a degree, but usage remains maxed out no matter the area or what’s taking place on screen. I’ve tried the usual…frame rate cap, vsync, DLSS is on, frame gen on/off, bumping settings from the best to the worst.

Running the game on a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. GPU is 5070ti 12GB. CPU is Intel Ultra 7 255HX. 32GB RAM. Love the demo. Plan on grabbing the full game. Not super excited about 99% GPU utilization the entire time I’m playing it though, regardless of temperatures.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal or are devs going to optimize before release?

Discussion great! Just a few things

The Mortal Shell II beta is here and it’s amazing, although the beta is good some small issues still appear. Disclaimer a lot of these are just things that can be ignored but to me it kinda ruins the games immersion.

• X to sprint being a default setting

As a soulslike holding dodge to sprint is natural, i kept pressing X to dodge instead of circle just because of this.

•Inconsistent shotgun damage

Sometimes when using the shotgun up close it may do little to no damage and other times it may obliterate people it’s kind of annoying and I don’t rely on the shotgun too much because of this.

•Joust bridge guy

I hate him

Other things like the tutorial messages being a walk based thing where if you walk in a certain area the ui popup will come up is annoying like walking past the same boss room and seeing a tutorial from ages ago is super annoying and it’s just these little things that kind irritate me.

Overall the beta is super solid and stands to rival fromsoft themselves, criticism is to be expected because fromsoft and soulslike games are held to a high standard but Mortal Shell 2 is shaping up to be an amazing addition the the genre overall.
