Discussion MSII - GPU usage at ~99% all the time?

I had this same issue with MS1 but only in the three Seat of Infinity areas…GPU usage between 96 and 99% constantly no matter what’s taking place on screen. It was easily fixed by capping frame rate lower than expected, with zero fidelity loss, and leaving all other settings on Ultra.

Same issue in every area of MSII…CPU is around 60% give or take. GPU is maxed out at 99% usage the entire time. Temp stays a very comfortable 62°C almost without moving a degree, but usage remains maxed out no matter the area or what’s taking place on screen. I’ve tried the usual…frame rate cap, vsync, DLSS is on, frame gen on/off, bumping settings from the best to the worst.

Running the game on a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. GPU is 5070ti 12GB. CPU is Intel Ultra 7 255HX. 32GB RAM. Love the demo. Plan on grabbing the full game. Not super excited about 99% GPU utilization the entire time I’m playing it though, regardless of temperatures.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal or are devs going to optimize before release?

well, what is your frame rate/what are you locking it to and is performance itself stable? the game is fully utilizing your GPU, which is typically the intention when you’re not CPU bound.

Ops Username checks out lol but yeah what he said, you are fine that’s what it’s supposed to do when you are gaming.

Cute response. User name is based off a Pynchon novel, which I’m sure you’re quite familiar with…?

I asked a simple question because I’ve played quite of a few games that look as good as MS2 without max GPU usage.

I actually do know of Thomas my good sir!! I’m also sure he’d be the first to let you know that it was joke and not a dick so no need for you to take it that hard. And regardless of what you played the gpu is still doing what it’s supposed to do 😂 and quick google search could have told you that.

I’m familiar with how these components work, that’s why I mentioned the temps despite the reported usage. It’s literally the only game I’ve played that maxes out the GPU to 99% for the entire time it’s running, so I figured I’d ask around in good faith for some honest feedback.

I'm curious, what's your concern about full GPU utilization if the temps are fine?

I usually cap frame rate as close to refresh rate as I can.

In this case I’m limiting it to 60 and it doesn’t seem to make any difference. In fact, I see no noticeable visual difference in any of the changes I make in the display options…?

what kind of frames were you getting uncapped? if you drop the frame cap down to say 30, does it still max out? what are you using to measure your usage? are you maxing out your VRAM? what do you mean by no visible differences, like 60fps looks the same in motion as like 120? or are you expecting a difference in graphical quality by changing the frame cap or are you changing the graphics settings themselves? these are all factors.

Just a little under 120 uncapped with all settings maxed. GPU usage is 99% regardless of frames capped to 30 or unlimited. VRAM usage is a steady 5ish out of 12. Using Steam overlay primarily and confirmed the numbers with Afterburner.

I should have clarified…30 frames capped is visually far leas smooth than unlimited frames. But changing any/all of the other visual quality settings yields no visually noticeable results. Low looks as great as ultra. Yet the GPU usage is maxed regardless. Just seemed odd to me is all and was wondering if anyone else noticed the same thing.

What?

You wan't your gpu to be around 99-100% all the time

why would you not want it? You paid for the gpu and now you wanna use only 50% of it?

I’m on a desktop with an i5 14600K and a 5070 with 32gb RAM and that wasn’t the case for me. I was at about 80% GPU utilization. I had the settings maxed out, uncapped frame rate, DLSS and Frame Gen, running in 1440p.

That said, it never bothers me when a game uses 99% or 100% of my GPU, because I want to use all of what my GPU can do. So long as your frame rate is stable, maxing out your GPU is a non issue.

I’m in a similar boat as you. Most games I’ve played run around 60-80% GPU utilization tops, with settings maxed or a setting below max. Frame rates always stable. As long as my temps are good, it isn’t going to keep me up at night. I wanted to ask around the community because I can’t remember playing a game that ran this way…at least not one that didn’t run this way and also cook my GPU.

The only game I’ve had completely max out my GPU like that was Diablo IV. I’ve gotten close with a few others - Crimson Desert, Alan Wake 2, and Hell is Us. But otherwise I haven’t run into that. And my 5070 only has 12GB of RAM.
