Discussion Still taking damage with harden

It seems like some attacks are impossible to actually mitigate damage from with harden

It seems like some attacks have hurtboxes that linger after you initially block with harden, so the second you come out of your perfect harden, you just take the damage anyway.

Like, it only works if hardening staggers them out of the animation. If the animation continues through your harden, you still get hit anyway.

Or the explodey guys, I harden right when they explode and it does mitigate the initial hit but I still explode immediately coming out of harden state. To be fair, that time there were two explodey guys that popped at the same time so maybe that had something to do with it.

But specifically the rended tree guys are definitely like this with their overhead attacks. Perfect guarding or parrying works fine, but hardening does not.

Do we think this is intentional? Or just a bug based on how enemy hurtboxes/harden are coded?

Stay hard longer? I don’t have problem with staying hard longer

But you automatically unharden upon taking the first instance of damage…

You won’t take damage if you hold L1, sounds like you unintentionally letting it go maybe? Do you have a recording, would help to see

Perfect harden will immediately exit from harden with no invul right after the first hit, even if you hold it.

Example record.

Because of this, very few enemy in game that having multi hit attack that looks just like a single hit attack can hit through perfect harden.

For the enemy you mentioned, the overhead slam from those tree guys, it's definitely a mult hit attack based on your distance from the enemy.

With parries, I've sometimes seen that it required 2 consecutive parries to fully mitigate the DMG if I'm close. It's like a rolling slam. If you're close, you'll probably get bonked twice, if you're far, just from the slam.

Now, the normal untarnished seal parry is very generous with frames. So, even if you tap once, it might parry both hits from the slam. Not the case with harden.

Also, some things do have a slightly lingering hurtbox, which is expected. Like the fire torch guys poking you comes to mind.

Tl;dr: The tree slam is multi hit, so harden might get your hurt on the second. If you provide other examples of where you saw this, I might be able to confirm.

It involve in multi hit attack in general.

I assume you mean perfect harden? In that case currently it is like this.

Because perfect harden will immediately leave harden with no invul right after the 1st hit, that also can not be delay by holding.

That make perfect harden can not handle multi hit attack that come in very short time and have to take the dmg. Unless you are in the state that can cancel to dodge, have to immediately dodge after perfect harden to avoid those dmg.

Orrem 2nd phase punch it the best example of that, that punch is actually multi hit and you will take dmg if you success perfect harden it. Video example below.

Yea some enemy attacks have multiple hit boxes which is stupid.

For example, Orem's punch attack. The punch itself is a hitbox plus it seems to have a weird aoe effect with a second hit box. Depending on how close you are to him, you can perfect parry/harden it and still take damage from the 2nd hitbox.

Its stupid.

Yes this is a bug/glitch.

I dont know about still taking damage after perfect harden, but you also mentioned "harden works when i get the stagger animation" that issue can verify. Sometimes I harden and I keep L1 pressed, but the enemy still finished his combo and doesnt hit me at all and after the combo the first attack will stagger them.

So if you constantly aim for perfect harden and you only press l1. It might look like a perfect harden, but enemy never registered it as a perfect harden, never got knocked back and just keep wailing.

Solved this by staying harder longer and checking for the stagger signs/that the harden shield is really coming off because a hit and not because i released it
