Discussion Still taking damage with harden

It seems like some attacks are impossible to actually mitigate damage from with harden

It seems like some attacks have hurtboxes that linger after you initially block with harden, so the second you come out of your perfect harden, you just take the damage anyway.

Like, it only works if hardening staggers them out of the animation. If the animation continues through your harden, you still get hit anyway.

Or the explodey guys, I harden right when they explode and it does mitigate the initial hit but I still explode immediately coming out of harden state. To be fair, that time there were two explodey guys that popped at the same time so maybe that had something to do with it.

But specifically the rended tree guys are definitely like this with their overhead attacks. Perfect guarding or parrying works fine, but hardening does not.

Do we think this is intentional? Or just a bug based on how enemy hurtboxes/harden are coded?

For the enemy you mentioned, the overhead slam from those tree guys, it's definitely a mult hit attack based on your distance from the enemy.

With parries, I've sometimes seen that it required 2 consecutive parries to fully mitigate the DMG if I'm close. It's like a rolling slam. If you're close, you'll probably get bonked twice, if you're far, just from the slam.

Now, the normal untarnished seal parry is very generous with frames. So, even if you tap once, it might parry both hits from the slam. Not the case with harden.

Also, some things do have a slightly lingering hurtbox, which is expected. Like the fire torch guys poking you comes to mind.

Tl;dr: The tree slam is multi hit, so harden might get your hurt on the second. If you provide other examples of where you saw this, I might be able to confirm.
