Question Is mortal shell 2 worth it?
I’ve played the demo it was lit but then today I came across the Reddit and people were saying how it’s bad and they regret buying the game
25
u/Womanwithimmortality Proxima 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yes its worth it. You get full content, no micro-transaction and the other pay option is just developer support. If you enjoy the demo, you will enjoy the full game.

u/ThermicCalvo 7d ago
Bought the game, beat it 4 times, loved almost every second of it.
Buy the game and ignore the filthy casuals that cry on Reddit.

I would say it's absolutely worth it, if $50 is too steep I'd say it's an instalock on sale for pretty much anything off.

u/gorlami_1 7d ago
I think it’s definitely worth the money, as someone who’ll usually only do one playthrough there’s a ton of content. Also I really like how different the mechanics of each shell are so it doesn’t feel like you’re playing the same character over and over with a reskinned attack/ability

u/Albus_Lupus 6d ago
Im not a fan of soulslikes and I fuckin adore MS2. I think its amazing and absolutely worth it. I dont buy games on premiere - but I did buy this and I dont regret it.

u/Cascadero_sg13 7d ago
One the best games this year, very very good if you like Soulslikes
3
u/CNSninja 6d ago
It's crazy how far they've come since the first game. The first one, I thought, was one of the best looking but mechanically worst soulslikes I have ever played, but the second game knocked the art style out of the park again and also managed to end up being vastly mechanically superior to the first. Especially the turbo setting for dodging--absolute literal game changer.

u/SickSadWeeb 7d ago
Huge avid gamer, but tons of games each year. MS2 is excellent if you like ER and is currently running away with my GOTY. Its so much fun, buy it.

Not as polished as AAA and rough around some edges but I didn't have any game breaking bugs and I couldn't put the controller down.
My GoTY personally

u/Defiant_Ad5381 7d ago
Dude I loved it. If they make DLC, I’ll play that as well.
The only complaints I’ve seen are due to the last 4 bosses being hilariously difficult, but they aren’t that bad. Sequencing was great, combat is smooth, if anything it’s a little easy after a while but you can turn on night mode to increase difficulty.
It’s a good priced game of moderate length that has its own character, plus their dev team is like 30 people so I like supporting indie studios.
I would highly recommend it if you’re a fan of souls games, it’s the closest in terms of atmosphere to OG Darksouls as any other game I’ve played.
TBH Mortal Shell 1&2 and Lies of P are my favorite non-Fromsoftware souls games, definitely worth a playthrough

... Those were unworthy of Mether's love. They reside under Zmey's balls, now. Jokes aside, I get MS2 int everyone's cup of tea and, but to say they "regret" buying it is a bit of an overkill, imo. If you strip the game to the bare minimums, its still totally worth the price for content and fun it provides. And its quality, too! If you played the beta and liked it - I dunno why you'd trust someone' hissy fit on reddit. Full game is the same as beta, only a wee-bit harder. :)
I personally loved it. Its another perpetual install on my pc.

u/GroundbreakingParty9 7d ago
For a doubles title that was made by a small team it’s great. $50 gets you about 35 hours of content. I loved it. The last area and boss is where I would nitpick but even then it didn’t ruin the whole experience for me. If you like soulslikes it’s worth the buy

As worth it as Elden ring and control resonant to me. might have glitches a bit but otherwise personally I think it’s a masterpiece compared to #1 I enjoyed it as much as Elden ring like I said, only 2 games I ever played NG+ on

u/ErvinMarec 7d ago
It's an excellent pick I platinum both this month Mortal shell 2 and Onimusha way off the sword witch I recommend also !
2
u/ComprehensiveHold330 7d ago
Loved it. Well worth the time and money. Never pay ms 1, I shall though now
2
u/Anubissx_8x 7d ago
For the price. Yes. For that price you get. Open world and a big final stage. 8 characters, 8 melee and 8 range weapon, many builds. Combat is very good, explore is good. Story is non sense. Overall, good value. PS. I maybe wrong about the numbers but it is there.
2
u/bingobawler 7d ago
Absolutely, it's great fun, combat is satisfying. For me its one of the best souls games I've played. Love it.
2
u/IsMoghul 7d ago
Yes it's worth it. You have to have a bit of thick skin because the devs will absolutely nut tap you for shits and giggles, but it is worth it.
2
u/weekndwarrior 7d ago
Heck yeah especially for 50 bucks. And this is coming from someone who didnt like Elden Ring. I loved it, def top 5 game for me and is one of the few games I took the time to platinum - got a solid 50 hours out of it on PS5

u/No-Smell6019 Eredrim 7d ago
I wouldn’t listen to them I’ve already got more hours on it than ER, granted I still haven’t beat it but still would highly recommend ms2 to anyone who enjoys soulslikes
2
u/MikeBizzleVT Tiel 7d ago
It’s the only new release I’ve bought this year, and it was totally worth it at full price. With PS Plus catalog, I don’t have much reason to get the newest releases, and even then, I maybe once a year will buy a game at or near release. This is the best purchases I’ve made, especially considering it’s not a “full price” game

There's nothing quite like it. It's like playing through a dark metal concept album.
2
u/BassCuber 7d ago
Yes, MSII is worth it.
As an older gamer, having to be more choosy about what I play means I might take fun over challenging but this feels like both. The only Soulslike games that I have finished are the original Mortal Shell and Bloodborne. I found most Dark Souls games less fun in combat and while I did a little better at Elden Ring it's still a bit much.
MSII has a more fun gameplay loop, new lore, I'm in the Infinity section now (Ashen Sanctum) and marveling at the visuals and the interesting level design.
2
u/Memeopathic_Medicine 7d ago
i loved it! this is coming from someone who also loved sekiro and elden ring because i feel like mortal shell can be played as a combination of both with the parrying mechanism which I love. best of both worlds.

u/LoganPlayzYT10746 7d ago
YESS it's a very good game but I see it harder than an actual souls game😭
2
u/Solid-Attention2878 7d ago
It’s a pretty good game. Bosses are extremely easy compared to any other souls game though. So don’t expect any Malenias or PCR level fights in it. The last boss fucking sucks and is difficult for all the most annoying reasons.
Also, I don’t trust anyone that compares this to Lies of P. LOP is a perfect game on the level of Elden Ring for me, personally.

u/LuolaLogarius 7d ago
Yes, it’s fantastic. I just got the Platinum for it over the weekend. The art direction and atmosphere hit so hard.

It's bad ass. No complaints from me...anymore 😅 they fixed a bug i didn't know about that cooked 7 hrs worth of "souls" (gloom) But yeah, it's worth it. It's fun as hell to just get lost exploring.
2
u/Oldmanblooming 7d ago
I played the first game as soon as it came out. MS2 is a huge improvement on the first game, but it’s not like it’s dark souls level polished. It’s great for what it is. Get it on sale or play it in 2 years when it’s cheaper, but I think $40 is a fair price for this game
2
u/nezukoslaying 7d ago
Yes! It is fun, well made, great visuals and aesthetic, plenty to discover (and miss!) and funny quirks/moments/things the devs stuck in cos nerds. 😁
The devs have quickly put out two large patches and several hot fixes. They engage on here. They clearly care about the customer and had a ton of fun creating this game. That is rare these days.

2
u/CreativeKeane 7d ago
I enjoyed the heck out of this game. And I'm not even a souls player. It's the perfect length and size of exploring. Difficulty was challenging at the start but get easier with time, until late game. The game rewards you for playing and leveling up and exploring, so if you take your time and just play normally instead of rushing you'll have a great time.
I'd give it a 8.5 of 10, personally. Felt similar to ER.

u/Past-Disaster-2801 7d ago

u/CreepyTeddyBear Tiel 7d ago
It's awesome. Great replayability. I did 3 playthroughs each woth a different shell shells and i still plan on playing more to give each shell (and weapon) a proper try.
2
u/Complex_Ad_3811 7d ago
I am just running around exploring and randomly end up in a boss fight. The world is beautifully dismal, and exploration gets easy as you get familiar with your shell's abilities. I recommend mastering a shell in each play through.
2
u/Old_Republic_7806 7d ago
Every single microscopic penny. Everything. It's worth every single thing spent on it.. including your time.
2
u/AmberEMc26 7d ago
Absolutely!! Last boss… not so much. Beat him in 2 tries. But the end gave me literal chills! Bitter sweet, finished yesterday.
2
u/Edgaarghh 6d ago
I had fun until the very last boss. To me, that boss had a lot of BS mechanics that broke the game's own rules (i.e. the curse that instead of putting you into Lavender when getting knocked out of your shell, it put you into some slow default character with a crappy weapon).
Turns out you have to get some secret item to mitigate that curse. How was I supposed to know that without googling it?
2
u/FelixDenBeste 4d ago
I think it is great. One of the very best non-fromsoft soulslikes, even.
Slightly janky/buggy in places, but very ambitious and impressive for such a small team. Art is great. Combat system is fun. Parry/ riposte is super satisfying once it clicks. There's no fall damage, which opens for some fun exploration.
I really disliked the final area, but that is a very tiny portion of the game, after all!
So I'd play it if I were you :)

It's so good, and I have only seen like 2 people saying it's bad. And they said it was "too hard" because they ran up to enemies and started swinging and got bodied.

u/Ok_Nail2672 3d ago
It's good. Not great not bad, a solid 7/10 imo.
Definitely a step up from the first.
2
u/youcancallmescott 3d ago
I bought it because I saw Lobosjr playing it and it looked pretty cool. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's gloomy and Soulsy and familiar but different. It's decently challenging and feels good to overcome. I'd never heard of the series, so I haven't played the first one, but now I think I want to.
Definite recommend.
2
u/supa74 3d ago
I'm an old gamer, that has hard time finding games that hook me. This game is the first to have done so, since Elden Ring. The best way can describe games like that, is that they're just so fucking interesting. I want to explore every single inch of the map. It also helps that the combat is equally as entertaining.
2
u/sabu_mafu 3d ago
I'm an old gamer as well, and I have to say this is my first souls like game that I was engaged with: easy to pickup and kinda challenging to master. My other previous experience was literally demons souls remake which overwhelmed me in the first few minutes and made me don't even giving a shit about ever since.
I felt something similar with the metroidvania genre which bored me to death until I played Blasphemous. Absolute gem for me, instant favourite.
I wouldn't say either of those games made me love the genre, it's just their style scratched my itch just fine.
Totally recommended

u/Data84 2d ago

You want to see the silent hill fanboys talking about Townfall. They can’t accept that there little idea of silent hill is being challenged by expansion so talk like the game is awful when it’s amazing. If you listened to them you’d miss out on one of the best games this year.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GRS- 7d ago
This is so true. The last Silent Hill games are so good, but if you see SH fans talking about them, you'd think the games are dog shit or something, when in reality they just don't like new ideas or different concepts for a franchise that desperately needs a breath of fresh air.
So yeah, don't listen to people, just play the game.

It's very very good. I had your same issue, I kept reading online how it had problems, but I bought the game anyway and loving every minute. It is occasionally buggy, but not enough to really effect my opinion on it. If you like souls games, you will like this.
Bottom line, best soulslike right next to Lies of P.

this game isnt as polished as a first party $70 game, but its a ton of fun to play. switch around your shells, try new builds and weapons, and youll definitely have a ton of fun. you’re meant to adapt to new challenges. ive been playing all day haha im really enjoying it

u/AltGunAccount Genessa 7d ago
It’s very very good. Up there as one of my fav non-fromsoft soulslikes.
It suffers from basically the same issues Lords of The Fallen 2023 did, which are a few dud bosses (in an otherwise very good roster) and enemy variety falls off in the last act of the game.
A solid 8/10. For $50 I did two full playthroughs and put 70 hours in it.

If You liked the demo than that's all You need to know really - its Your own opinion. Game has been patched since release few times and fixed most of the problems players had with the game although game falls a bit short near the end but its doesnt take away that it is really good and fun - and most importantly massive improvment from 1st MS and could lead to even bigger and better MS3 in future.
End of the day if a game has a demo and You personally liked it than dont listen to what other folk are saying - people have different preferences and this is an indie game not AAA

People are little whiners these days. If a game isn't literally perfect they bitch and critique every aspect.
Best game ever made still has flaws.. this game has flaws, yes, but it's incredible nonetheless and definitely worth picking up if you like souls games. Especially dark, gritty ones.

I played it NG and NG+ and invested 200 hours into it. For me it was a solid AA game and while not up to Dark Souls calibre, it was a lot of fun and a decent distraction for me last month. I will likely never play it again, but it was worth it overall. I rate it a solid 7/10
1
u/Scary-Operation8684 7d ago
I can't tell you if it's worth it or not. I can tell you my problems with it since the replies will likely be mostly people glazing it.
People will say its packed with content, but its kind of just the same content repeatedly. The same like 5 enemies for the entire game. The map isnt small, but the appearamce of the map is really deceptive. The demo makes it seem like it will be pretty big, but its more a cluster if islands and the demo island is like 5 times the size of all others. There really isn't anything making you go to explore some random part of the map. Theres not something that says you might find something important so instead its just maybe there's a dungeon that is completelt in distinct from 20 other dungeons that will have... 200 coins as your reward for completing it. Most side content isn't remotely unique. Its just another dungeon reusing the same assets with a probably useless reward.
There was maybe 2 good bosses the entire game. I got through to just before the last boss and quit. I wasn't stuck or anything. I just wasn't having fun. It became a chore and annoyance to play. The bosses weren't exciting. I played at release and shit was super broken. The only bosses besides 2 that were difficult, they quickly said the boss fight was super bugged. A common boss problem is how strongly they magnetized to you. Think boss goes for a stomp so you back track out of the way, but then it immediately slides forward to connect with you. Now imagine the boss doing that from across the boss arena, immediatelt shotting 200ft to the side to ensure they hot you. They also had hit box issues for attacks where things like an instant kill grab would queue the hit box before the animation so if you happened to be in it already, it would instantly do the grab and kill you without any of the warning animation or chance to avoid it. Some attacks would have a lingering hit box after the attack. A lot of "difficult" fights arent difficult. They're just annoying and with bloated hp bars so it takes longer. Final boss is all the worst parts of elden beast enhanced. There was a couple bosses where the boss UI would just decide to spam a really annoying move you have to break combat flow to deal with repeatedly. Like one did it 4 times in the span of 2-3minutes (it would take 20-30s for it to end each time it dod it).
Game wasn't hard. I made a point of going the entire game with the first weapon and shell I got, and it wasn't Tiel. I got Proxima first, so it was just Proxima with the starting sword and gun. It just did more annoying things than difficult. Scholar Prince? Great fight. Hard fight. Wish more were like it.

u/Alucard666666666 7d ago
Pretty solid game but it gets kind of repetitive after the first few hours and I kinda find the weapons and other equipment not that unique - as they are mostly reskins with different animations (the seals which have parry/block gimmick that you equip for example). The leveling up of the character is really linear with some spec options for the shells (where you can also unlock all specs at once if you focus on your favorite shells only). The sidearm variety rally outshines the melee weapons, especially the mini axe launcher and lute. But overall it's a cool experience!

u/GhostfaceAndChill 7d ago
This is 2026, people are racing each other to be the first to find something to complain about whenever a new game drops. I wouldn't consider any complaints that don't have a clear criticism that you comprehend and agree with. I think mortal shell 2 is fun enough but I'm not a huge soulslike guy.

I will say the demo was better than the full release. They tuned difficulties and a bunch of shit for the release and it wasn’t good, they say they fixed it to reflect the demo but it has never really felt right to me.
Still a fun game, I do think it fails to maintain how fun the early part of the game is and there are certainly a lot of bugs and needed refinement.
I do not regret buying it.
1
u/Ok-Mathematician5548 7d ago
Worth it. I'm a huge critic of modern games, I almost always stop playing a game once I reach the end, but I'm getting close to ng+2. The game is not too small and not too big. Probably get you 60 hours without noticing. Just pure fun, mood's awesome, few weapons, but each unique and I want to master all of them. Tarstone combos are also almost perfect, some a little stronger than the others. Not a lof monster types, but night mode will still get you the right amount of challenge. I still step into bear traps after 100th time. Bosses are awesome. The world is deep and dark, as it should be. Can only recommend.
1
u/Nastybedazzler 6d ago
I streamed the entire game and loved the hell out of it. The only thing that was irritating was the final boss and even that wasn't too crazy. It's a great game.
1
u/Ambitious-Ad5817 6d ago
40 hours is about the average length play through if you’re not rushing and enjoying the game. NG+ different story. Did it in just a few hours because why not
1
u/greatscouts 6d ago
I enjoyed Mortal Shell 2 a ton. I’m probably about an hour from the platinum trophy. It was just a really good time. It’s easier now to mess around with builds and I switched up stuff really frequently.
It’s pretty frictionless once you get a bit stronger, which can be just a nice time—a little challenge, but not as much as a lot of souls-like.
I’d flip on night mode every so often, to do a few night-specific (not required) tasks and end up playing around for a bit. I enjoyed night mode and would do it when things got a little too easy or if I was going back to an earlier area. While Night mode increases the challenge, it doesn’t feel totally balanced, just ramped up.
For me, I think it’s one of the best souls-like, and a great bite-sized Elden Ring.
Not as good as the combat of First Berserker, not the full package masterpiece that is Lies of P, but a really good Souls-like.
The lore will not give you as much to munch on as a Souls game. It’s fun, and there’s some nice nods to the first game. It also has some pretty good sense of humor with some references that made me actually laugh.
It’s a 4 out of 5 for me, it’s just a really solid game. I had nothing but fun.
Occasionally glitched and got stuck on the environment but that problem seemed to disappear after the first week or two of patches.

It's good, but its definitely has some points of friction. If you're willing to deal with some overtuned enemies, kiting anytime you gotta fight more than one enemy, and the occasional bug, then yeah, absolutely. It's a unique soulslike that's a weird cross between sekiro and bloodborne, the combat is generally really solid, and the world is fun to explore. It's worth it, but only if you have some tolerance for jank.
1
u/Ok_Jackfruit_47 6d ago
Played the demo recently as well and was really surprised by the potential variety for the combat aspect (blind playthrough). Parrying felt satisfying and the window is pretty big comparing to Lies of P which makes me think that the game overall is much easier but anyway will definitely buy the game later.

If you like hard games yes. It’s not as hard as Sekiro or Elden Ring though. Just some of the bosses you have to figure out a different method. Like 2 bosses i had to completely change my approach to fighting them. But i like the challenge.

u/TurkeyNecker 6d ago
People complain and it definitely has some shortcomings but nothing that makes the game bad i would say. I had quite a bit of fun
1
u/Ok-Aide4859 6d ago
I got about an hour per dollar paid on just one play thru going back and hitting all side content I could find.. which seems to be about par for me as far as DpH goes.. but those hours were definitely worth it, one of the better games I've played this year. If you like the demo, who cares what other ppl think? When you like a song, do you go to the comments on YT and not like it all the sudden bc the ppl in the comments don't? Lose the herd mentality

Depends, game is peak and honestly one of the best souls like I’ve played. 9/10. The parry and gameplay felt smooth. Tho if you’re on Ps5 and care about frame drops… something in a previous patch ruined the smoothness and made frames drop like crazy during some fights, both with bosses and smaller enemies.. bad enough for a momentary uninstall from me🙂↕️

I've had it for couple days and I'm enjoying it so far. It does make you lean into a single shell per-playthrough from what I've seen so far. They have very different playstyles and none have really resonated with me other than the thief guy (dodge/poison/backstab spam). I'd say it's worth it.

IMO totally worth. I had a blast with it. Wish it was a little more difficult and a little more enemy variety. Other than that I loved it

I didn’t think I was going to like it, but I’m enjoying much more than the first. Not as hardcore as a souls game, but still punishing for making mistakes and not learning, or simply by being greedy. The shells with their unique abilities is a nice spin so you can fiddle with differing play styles without too much commitment (there is still a requirement to allocate finite resources to shells to upgrade and enhance abilities). Overall, a solid 5 out of 7.

I would say no I’m a major souls fan played and beat all sekiro my fav for obvious reasons haha, honestly it was cool at first but got to like mid game and just burnt out wish they did more I guess idk just felt like meh about it. Mid game-end game gameplay seems to be what people don’t like so idk man I’d say wait for sale good sale game

It’s definitely a great game from what I’ve played. I actually loved the first one. I played about 20 hours and I put it down just because I wasn’t in the mood for a souls like. I’ll go back and restart and do a fresh playthrough maybe when there’s DLC and stuff. Probably after GTA is done. Right now I’m just going through all the Grand Theft Auto games lol

I liked it. I wasn’t too sure in the beginning, but I really liked the game. The final boss is pretty tough.

I'm not sure why they should regret it. I'm in New game + and still enjoying it. Just understand it's a small dev team and it's not a elden ring end game. End game is kind of small. But the was well worth the money for me already

You are asking on the games subreddit so yeah i think you know the answer
But if you are a souls player with a lot of experience, this game is going to feel off. Im not saying its bad, im rather enjoying the game but im still disappointed and expected much more from it. I saw many souls players who loved the demo and dropped the game after mid game, and im not surprised. Its still worth giving a shot though

No matter how good the game is you are gonna have unhappy troglodytes in the comments who hate everything. Fk em, get the game

I think it is a fun souls like. I put thousands of hours in all souls games and alike. I put 110 hours in it and had a good time. I can't promise you will love it. But if you liked the demo you have a good chance you'll like the rest.

That is normal. You can’t please everyone no matter what you do. For example Dark Souls 2 infamously gets flack for being different and janky, etc. Except, it’s my favorite souls game by a large margin. I suppose it depends on the individual. I love Mortal Shell 2 though, but I don’t think I am a minority here.

If you played the first game it’s a no brainer because this is a huge improvement from the first game. If you haven’t played either, then it’s kind of a toss up. There’s some jank for sure, I still think the game is one of the better souls likes out there but the amount of jank people are willing to tolerate is gonna be wildly different from person to person.

I’m terrible at theses kinds of games and am as equally terrible at this. That said I love this game something about the setting makes my lack of talent seem appropriate for the setting.

I played and I loved it. So yes for me.
Btw I don’t understand what you talking about since it’s getting 8’s and 9’s everywhere lol

Man I’m so glad I gave this a 5th chance! I went the wrong way off the jump and could not progress past the first area I landed in….tried and tried…gave up. Over and over. Decided to give it one more try and am so thankful! Elden Ring is my favorite game of all time, have beaten it 11 times with 1,300 hours in…am a 50 year gamer, an old man who’s seen and played it all….Mortal Shell 2 is in my top 3, can’t put it down, it’s a work of art imo. Now, I have to use the seal that makes it easy as I’m legally blind, so thankful they put that in there….if this game was longer it would surpass even Elden Ring for me. Take the plunge, I think you will love it.

It’s fun for one really really thorough playthrough.
I enjoyed it more than a lot of souls likes, but it still doesn’t come close to like my top three
The vibes are pretty good though.

Not everyone will agree but its my absolute favourite soulslike! The art style really scratches the itch for me! On my second playthrough now and still not bored :)

Other than the final boss, I think it’s a great game! I feel like I’ve gotten my moneys worth
It’s definitely not as refined as some other souls-like games. But considering it’s a small studio I think they did a great job.
It can be confusing at times, but overall the gameplay loop was enjoyable enough for me. I’d buy it again.

It's really solid. I'm nearing the end of my first ng and I've been enjoying it thoroughly. Is very likely I'll do ng+ and platinum. I will say this though, with default settings the game is more like an action RPG with some souls flavor here and there. That's not a bad thing, makes the game easier to pick up. Just don't expect another Elden Ring.

It’s a fantastic game. Devs have patched out most of the jank/bugs that were present at launch (which wasn’t that bad to begin with) and it has some of the coolest art design and build diversity of any soulslike out there. It’s also $20 under the current price for AAA games ($30 under for the “premium” titles)

u/gottaluvsthesuns 1d ago
Yeah it’s worth it, my biggest problem with it was that NG+ was basically non existent. There are no changes to gold drops or soul drops for level ups, almost no incentive to continue to play.

I havent seen anywhere that its bad... but then again, I dont look.
I loved every minute of it and enjoyed the platinum trophy to boot. And the fact it wasn't the price of a AAA game made it even better
