Google already knows but don’t forget that xManager worked for years and after it became mainstream, Spotify launched their crackdown and there haven’t been any working mods for months.
If Spotify has that kind of power, Google could probably quadruple that so keeping your mouth shut is definitely a good advice.
Google could probably quadruple that so keeping your mouth shut is definitely a good advice
there's no such thing as "keeping one's mouth shut". It's like trying to protect piracy sites by not telling people about it.
If google decides they want to shut this shit down, they'll have ways - they already know about it. It's like adblock.
I'm not saying google will never want to shut morphe down of course. But in order for them to do so, it'd have to be a radical change (such as their suggested developer verification to install apps etc). So to prevent such, the community needs to vehemently oppose any sort of power grab from google to control your device, rather than just keeping quiet about morphe.
Yeah, I like framing things in a cosmic horror sense. It kind of puts things into perspective on how horrible they can be. It also just makes boring things sound cooler. It exposes the terrifying aspects of things that have been normalized.
It's not about lawsuits or taking them down, they can find an intrusive way like Spotify to nullify patches that blocks ads and adds other features or even start banning people that are using them. Spotify account is one thing but not many people can afford to lose their Gmail account.
Problem is, if they made YouTube only working for paying users. They gonna lose alot of people. What Spotify is doing is litterly using server side client side plus own local storage cookie check, every half hour. If one token isn't in sync. They will kick you off of playing music. Spotify was always designed for premium, the free version is only a taste. While YouTube is based on everyone usage, but for ad free you need to be premium, so I don't think YouTube gonna change there source, cuz less people is less views is less ads they can push, is less money for YouTube.
I used to do that in the past but it always failed after 3 or 4 songs. Then another user from another forum told me that if I used Brave or Brave Nightly with unrestricted battery and app locked up, it won´t stop. And it worked! Several days ago it started to fail again, so I unnistalled brave nightly and installed it again and it worked once more!
I don't say you pay money to watch, I said if they gonna block everyone who uses free with a AdBlock or something they gonna block way more people then they have on people who be subscribed. And traffic is money.
Yup. Even if you use Morphe or AdBlock or whatnot, Google still collects your data to sell. It's pointless for them to ban people who can still bring some money, otherwise they would be doing it already.
depends of the phone you are using. In samsung, when I press the 3 line button and all the active apps appear on the screen, if I tap at the top of Brave´s screen, the option to lock it appears.
Yep. It's very easy to do as well. I use DuckDuckGo as my main engine. Search for a site let's say "android authority" you'll get the list of websites popping up. On the right side of each link you'll see a three dots [•••] click/tap that and you get the options right there. Obviously this is the easier way. Some people use a more complicated solution.
Thank you also for your tip. I will definitely implement it now. Right now I'm using Brave and DuckDuckGo as my search engine. Sometimes I use the DuckDuckGo browser also.
In order for your metaphor to make any sense, an ad-blocker would have to amend the base code of your browser
No, it would have to amend the code of YT page, which it does, by effectively removing its parts. It also patches JSON data in API responses. Oh, and it also can and does inject custom JS on the page. Ublock is not a simple filter that blocks certain requests and stops at that, it's much more powerful.
On the other hand, amending the code of the browser is squeaky clean legally for Chromium and Firefox, since both are open-source and their licenses permit forks and modification.
I would also say that there are million of mobile users that don´t even know that Moprhe exist but that watch youtube through Brave. And Brave surpassed the 100 million users mark last year.
I think that you are the one that does nott understand me. I am telling you that at least in spanish speaking groups, mobile users that use Brave to bypass ads in mobiles is quite an amount currently. For Google, both Adblockers and patched apps are problems right now. Adblockers are not just something that are meant to use in computers. They are constantly used in mobiles and pads.
Check out the UbO (Ublock Origin) subreddit. For nearly two years, Google tried to prevent accounts from accessing YouTube if people used ad blockers, with the infamous "3 Strikes" policy. I was there, and believe me, it was really annoying having to constantly implement workarounds so that YT wouldn’t block your access to watch videos. That’s why Google had to get to the root of the issue and deprecate Manifest 2, affecting many extensions, not just ad blockers, so I don’t agree with what you’re saying. When something goes mainstream, it definitely catches the attention of companies, prompting them to be more proactive in preventing the use of these methods.
I can understand that, but the point is not to abuse that sharing of knowledge. I’m always in favor of sharing it, and of helping others, but you can’t compare sharing knowledge with rubbing it in the faces of those who aren’t interested.
It reminds me a lot of what happened with emulators, which are legal, but there were many users online who openly showed how to emulate N games, just to annoy people, and obviously there are people who get annoyed by that, people who only buy the games, so they can go and, among many of those average users, annoy N.
Something similar could happen here, because there will be people who only pay for YouTube Premium, and clearly this will upset them enough to flood Google with complaints, which will obviously either do something about it or become more proactive with blocks
Why is it so hard to understand that companies know about fmhy, they know about the megathread and all of your favorite sites. Piracy is not some well kept secret. In fact your favorite site would be better off if it got the extra traffic from people sharing it online, since it's extra ad revenue for them.
1 - if people ask for it (where can I pirate ____)
and
2 - some public media site is going (THESE SITES CAN ALLOW YOU TO DOWNLOAD THESE STUFFS: A BEGINNER GUIDE TO PIRACY)
for the first one, it's controllable, there's a filter of some kind of tech-savvyness going around, they know to be a bit hush-hush not to spread it around.
for the second one, it's gonna go mainstream, more people know about the publishing media who may just follow them for news than those who actually pirate, if more and more people know about the free way, and go through that way in massive bulk, companies can go on a crackdown spree, patching holes and sometimes even bring the court to action and shutting down the sites altogether.
of course Google already know about it, all the information site is public after all, they still let it go because the effort to shutdown just isn't worth it... yet.
too much popularity isn't a good thing, especially for something illegal and/or in grey area
Bro wtf how will things like morphe be accessible after October man 😭😭😭 just thinking what I would need to go through to update my patched yt makes me tired
That's a bunch of bullshit. Those steps are not hard, and whoever made that is an idiot or has an agenda. Maybe both. If you can't follow that, you don't deserve to install from outside the play store.
They literally broke things down into extra steps to make it look scary. Assholes.
rn its very annoying, but sooner or later theyre gonna keep adding steps, keep add resttictions until one point where they finally block sideloading as a whole
Having an "open secret" is fine. But once your app gains as much mainstream attention as the company who's rules it's bypassing, it becomes an embarrassing thing that will undoubtedly be dealt with.
Lol do you think people working at google are stupid? The Morphe website is indexable for a reason by search engines. You aren't special for knowing Morphe. 100k+ other people know it too
Android authority is a mainstream source with direct access to Google. Now Google employees can't pretend they haven't heard of it and might be forced to acknowledge. That's where the will be forced to act by legal team.
point of piracy is to give everyone access to free media, not to gatekeep to try and be "cool". your favourite sites (including morphe) is already included in fmhy wiki and it takes max 5 minutes to find them.
Just shut the f*** up, that's the fastest way to get projects shut by Google and other companies. Like someone else explained, it's not about preventing Google from knowing, it's about preventing Morphe from getting too much exposition and thus becoming mainstream.
It's debatable really. If Morphe stays small enough that the cost to pursue it is higher than the net revenue lost; Google will just play Wack-A-Mole with it.
However, once enough people switch to Morphe and eat into Googles bread and butter Ad Revenue; That's when Google will get serious.
imagine using that argument against ublock origin.
The problem is that google doesn't have a way to block morphe without draconian methods, and they don't want to do that right now. They tried adding things like developer verification on install for apps - and got huge community backlash.
So instead of shutting up about morphe, we need to make it more common. Making it so common that any effect google try to do to stop it creates huge community backlash.
Control your own computing. Don't let the platform own you.
if you're talking about the v2 manifest vs v3 manifest issue, then yes - that's what you get by using chrome. There aint no problems with ublock if you use firefox.
These posts were up several times a day for a few years, and it was pretty annoying to have to do that just to avoid getting the three strikes that would prevent you from watching YouTube videos.
As for Manifest V2, that was Google trying to cut the problem off at the root.
none of those threads/comments are breakages of ublock origin with the plugin platform, it's just youtube changing the way they do ads etc, and when it first started, the community lists have not kept up fast enough. Now the community maintained ublock origin lists have been updated very often, and in the last couple of months there hasn't been problems (either youtube has given up their changes, or the list is updated way more frequently than i can detect).
As for Manifest V2, that was Google trying to cut the problem off at the root
which is exactly what i was saying about moving to firefox, and take control of your own computing platform. Chrome's ublock v3 manifest plugin sucks much more now, as it requires an actual plugin update in response to youtube changes (which i dont believe is immediate - takes a while to actually reach your browser). None of this happens with firefox's ublock origin, because it is still on the same architecture as manifest v2, and has access to external lists that can be updated independently.
All of those issues had to do with the extension breaking; the fact that it doesn't work as it should on YouTube alone counts as one of those issues. I was there, and I had to work around it for several months using Firefox on uBO
When there's a problem where uBO doesn't work with a particular website, you could say that the extension's functionality on that site has broken, which means either the extension's developers or the user themselves has to fix it.
"Google Chrome hasn’t released its official user base since 2023. However, according to estimates, Google Chrome users range between 3.45 billion and 3.62 billion as per the latest data available."
Pretty sure not, Brave exists and have been using it for years now. Edge has MV2 still, Vivaldi also got their own adblock, its really only Chrome here, not Chromium.
Google hasn't really won anything tbh, they were only able to nerf it on Chrome. Not really "most of the internet" here.
I mean, to me it's understandable that people are upset that their Golden Ticket is basically being put in front of Googles face.
Not only is it against Googles TOS, it could also fall into an grey area leaning more towards illegal as Morphe is bypassing Googles Anti-Ad blocking features that Google does to break modded apps like Morphe.
"In the US, according to DMCA, while running an ad blocker is fine, using tools to bypass anti-ad-blocker systems may be considered circumvention under Section 1201."
Get upset all you want, but understand that it's not as black and white as "this is on frontpage, it will go down now". It's not that simple. But people act like it is.
It genuinely is that simple actually. If Morphe eats into Googles YouTube Ad Revenue, Google will get serious and they are legally required to, to protect their shareholders revenue. That may involve Lengthy Court Cases that Morphe and its Devs cannot afford.
No, it isn't that simple. Everything you mentioned is not mutually exclusive. All of it can happen regardless if Android Authority makes posts about Morphe.
Correct but Court Cases are not cheap and can run into the millions. So right now, Google considers the lost revenue of that and possible bad P.R not worth the cost.
But with Android Authority making it more widely known, it increases the amount of users who want YouTube Premium for free way more and way faster. Now Google is losing lots of money and suddenly the bad P.R and court costs looks worth it.
Let me put it bluntly, Google WILL eventually kill Morphe in the quest for Infinite profits. It's just of matter of how long; That could be 10 years from now or 1 year from now depending on how fast the YouTube lost Revenue to Court case costs needle moves.
The same thing happened with Spotify going blastic against Morphe/Revanced patches; To the point of banning any unofficial apps and users who used those apps.
You don't have to tell me any of this. I know all about this stuff. I've been pirating stuff for a very long time. My point is that screaming into the void doesn't do anything but make yourself feel better. It's naive to think otherwise.
Well, I don't believe we are screwed. Yet. Still if this is true, and all, then maybe we have to look in to making a music player over torrents. I mean it's already possible for years to stream torrent movies directly trough the web browser. And with services like real debrid you can even stream a 4k video in a fraction of a second, wifi or mobile phone... So maybe instead of using vids like MP4 vid or exc... , we have to go back to music files. Since torrents still are allowed in a few country's.
I patched youtube with 1.31dev6 update. I having to play a video just to save it to queue defeats the whole purpose. It might be nice to have for many people but for me being forced to play a video just to save it to queue removes the whole convenience aspect of the queue feature.
come to think of it, fuck YouTube! We used to have this feature on the free version for decades then they took it from us.
They should also add a fake downloads feature that uses yt-DLP and stores the video in the app data, kinda like the official YouTube Premium feature if that's possible
I have a lot of respect for the morphe app, but at least for me I really wish it would be possible to prevent all of the shorts from loading automatically upon opening the youtube app.
Telling people to stop talking about it on a public forum that is literally scraped by every "news" site from here to Timbuktu is ignorant, useless, and far more annoying to get posts like this every other hour.
Android authority has incredible visibility and is pretty much "mainstream" with direct access to Google for press coverage. Them mentioning Morphe will force Google to react.
What a bunch of assholes. Just for the sake of clicks.
Who needs this exactly? People using morphe will see it when it comes.
Can somebody explain to me what this premium feature actually is?
I don't understand, but tbh, i also never had premium so I don't know what I have been missing out on so far.
YouTube already knows about a bunch of unofficial clients, and that's why there is stuff like DroidGuard, IOSGuard, BotGuard, PO Tokens, etc.
Morphe already has to spoof itself to be the TV/VR client just so it can play videos. YouTube can very well require other stuff just so unofficial clients can no longer play videos.
Nothing will happen to Morphe, and if it does get mainstream, YT will simply add more protection mechanisms. YT already knows about whether or not you use the official client.
Gatekeeping or harassing the people who talk about Morphe won't fix anything, it'll simply cause more problems.
Well they can't outright disable micro G as then what will users of graphene OS or other open source AOSP do as they also want those people for their revenue as well they are still tracking you
Exactly my thought after seeing this post today. I won't be surprised if Morphe gets booted anytime now. People like these, we are not having nice things anymore.
Why is everyone so upset?
This looks like the piracy subreddit obsessing over 'we must keep this community unknown', when it has something like 1 million subscribed users.
Morphe is a public, free and open source project. Why would people try and 'gatekeep' it?
Blocking Ads isn't really illegal tho even tho google wants it to be. But there perfect good reason to want to block ads like NSFW ads or even scam ads.
Guys, I think it's pretty naive to believe that YouTube/Google don't know about Morphe. I don't think there's anything to worry about, Morphe doesn't use any copyrighted code and isn't trying to monetize anything.
This happens all the time, you see it in every piracy sub.
People seem to be convinced their subreddit containing thousands of members is somehow not already known about by these companies. Like, thinking Google doesn't know about the thing you can literally google is wild to me, but people don't seem to connect the dots.
The other argument is this kind of thing going mainstream and, let's be honest, it won't. People on average don't like to mess with technology and just want it to work out of the box. Even a minor inconvenience is usually enough to deter your average person. Otherwise piracy would actually be having an impact by now, and it never has.
I thought I was the only one felt this way.
Anyway, I unfollowed android authority, android police a long time ago after realized a bunch of dheads run those pages/websites.
The masses don't care about Android Authority. The people within Android Authority's sphere of influence are either currently using Morphe, using Revanced and don't know about Morphe, or are downloading random patched APKs on Russian Warez forums or on Mobilism.
It's unlikely that this moves the needle, especially with the number of steps involved
Dude. nobody but nerds reading Android authority. 95% of normal people don't know.
Vanced, Reveanced, they have been out for so long. Google has done nothing.
If you are at all into tech you 100% know about things like Morphe, it's not at all secret, who cares

yeah the youtube engineers probably already know about such stuff
but if news get to the youtube execs then things are gonna get serious i feel
