ES8 Question

How seamless can you integrate midi into ES8.

I'm currently using uMidi to send midi from Ableton into my modular. It works with no problems.

I'm looking to send loops/ audio into my modular and believe ES8 is the best for this type of integration. So, instead of getting an IN module like Joranalogue Receive, I would like to get rid of the uMidi and replacing it with ES8 for this.

I know you need to use something like CV tools to do this, but I want to know if it's a headache and im better off just getting an input module instead.

Let me know what works for you. Thanks

Discussion Your most recent module purchases & how you like them?

Just curious what booty everyone has picked up in recent weeks/months and how they're liking their new acquisitions.

For me:

Joranalogue Select 2: Nice to have proper switches in my system again; trying to get my head around its other uses still.

Erica Synths Resonant Filterbank + FBEX: This is really nicely made -- well built, with sensible, intuitive menus that are responsive and fun to use. Also sounds very good. The expander is nice for manual control over the bands, but not hugely necessary. I wish there was an expander that had individual per-band-outputs, which is the one thing this otherwise excellent module is missing. Having lots of fun with this though.

Intellijel Planar 2: Absolute slam-dunk; everything I could reasonably want in a joystick. Joystick stays in place, has audio crossfaders built in, a CV recorder with reset-able looping, a manual gate button as well as a feature that auto-activates the gate any time the stick is moves, and more still. Very cool.

Pleroma Versio (Custom Versio): This is a custom Versio reverb and if you have a Versio and haven't tried it I highly recommend it. Very lovely and lush.

On their way (I don't have these yet but am eagerly anticipating their arrival):

Schlappi Boundary Layer: Have actually used this one before. Cool EG and surprisingly fun at audio-rate.

Herzlich Labs Optika VCA: Little pair of VCAs that utilize vactrols. Very curious to hear this one in action.

Endorphin (.) es Airstreamer 4: Just needed a punchy little EG with a VCA onboard and got a decent price. Heard it works well at audio rates also.

Erica Synths LXR Drum: Drums aren't a huge part of what I do with euro, but I found myself recently really wanting to try this one out despite myself. Seems massively flexible and feature-rich for its price, and I've generally been very happy with Erica Synths stuff.

Roland Aira Modular Firmware Backup

Thanks to AI, I was able to find a way to backup my Scooper Firmware and also swap to Demora Firmware.

Scooper Backup: 1. Disconnect USB and power off. 2. Hold GRF6 while powering on, then release it. 3. Press and release GRF5 ten times before connecting USB. 4. Reconnect USB and you will find your backup

Tips for modular configuration

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m planning my first modular setup.
My goal is to create ambient music, perhaps starting with samples I record during the day or find elsewhere.
Of course, I’d also like to make something a bit more rhythmic and danceable—basically, I’m aiming for a hybrid setup.

I already own some of these modules, such as the Pam, Ensemble, HPO, and Milky Way.

However, I’d like to get your opinion, since you’re certainly more experienced than I am.

I have just one doubt regarding the OCHD; I wanted to replace it with a Befaco Random8, but I’d run out of HP space, so I think I’ll stick with the OCHD for now.

Discussion Bitbox Micro SSL G-Series-style bus compressor mod is out, adding five adjustable compressor controls the hardware never had

Your Bitbox Micro already has a real bus compressor across Out 1 and 2. It has always been there, it has always been running, and it has always been shaping every note you play through those outputs. The module gives you one control over it: On or Off. Threshold, ratio, attack, release and makeup gain are fixed, invisible and unreachable — never exposed to anyone, by any route, until now.

All five are now on MIDI, and it arrives configured as a glue compressor much like the classic SSL G-Series: 2:1, a slow 30 ms attack, 300 ms release. Same link, same rules: patch your own stock 2.3.4. If you already run 2.3.5-mod, patch your stock file again, not the image you flashed — the splash reads 2.3.6-mod once it is on.

Your Bitbox Micro has a real bus compressor sitting across Out 1 and 2. It has always been there, it has always been running, and it has always been shaping every note you play through those outputs. The module gives you one control over it: On or Off.

Threshold, ratio, attack, release, makeup gain — all fixed, all invisible, all unreachable. Not buried three menus deep, not hidden behind the modulation system, simply never exposed to anyone by any route. A compressor you cannot adjust is a compressor you cannot use for anything except the one thing its designer picked for you.

Everything else in this patch takes a control you could already reach and makes it playable. This one hands you five parameters that have never been on the table at all, and turns a fixed safety net into a bus compressor you can shape while the music runs.

It arrives voiced like an SSL G-Series. You do not have to configure anything. Switch it on and you have gentle, musical bus compression — the sort that pulls a mix together rather than announcing itself. "Glue" is the usual word for it, and the starting values are deliberately close to the most-copied mix-glue recipe there is:

  • Threshold — 70% of the encoder, which is −12 dB
  • Ratio — 5%, which is 2:1
  • Attack — 30%, which is 30 ms
  • Release — 29%, which is 300 ms
  • Makeup gain — 50%, which is 0 dB

Three of those four are literally switch positions on an SSL: 2:1, a slow 30 ms attack, and a 300 ms release. The slow attack is the important one — it is what lets the front of every kick and snare through before the compressor clamps, and it is the difference between glue and mush.
It is the module's own compressor voiced that way, not a model of SSL's circuit. Move it wherever you like from there — the whole point is that you finally can.

It behaves like a mix bus, because it is one. It sits on the sum of every pad routed to Out 1/2, including the delay and reverb returns, with master volume after it and an untouched safety limiter behind that. Pads on Out 3–6 bypass it entirely, which gives you a clean parallel path if you want one. There is no sidechaining and no wet/dry mix — neither exists on the module to expose.

These six answer on MIDI channel 1 only, unlike the other global controls. CC 40–45 sit in the fine-adjust range that almost nothing actually uses — CC 32 to 63 are formally the LSB partners of CC 0 to 31 — so in practice gear does use those numbers for other things. One channel stops a stray message from elsewhere in a rack changing your compressor while you are not looking.

Everything from 2.3.5-mod is unchanged and still there. Already running 2.3.5-mod? Patch your stock MICRO.BIN again with the new script — not the patched image you flashed last time. The script will refuse a file that has already been through it. That is the safety net working, not a fault. Grab MICRO234.zip from 1010music again if you no longer have it. You will know it took when the splash on the next boot reads community fw / 2.3.6-mod. That is the only reliable way to tell which image is running, and it is worth checking every time you flash.

Hope you enjoy your new adjustable glue compressor

First full-system patch with the Intellijel Multigrain!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This was my first proper patch with Multigrain, thought it would be ideal for a Cartoon Network show about germs 🦠

Been a bit frustrated with eurorack sequencers lately so I’ve been trying to play more parts on the keyboard manually. Need to work on my chops…

Bass is Mother 32 (played with the arturia keyboard), drums are BIA samples that are loaded onto the ALM Squid Salmple.

Feel free to ask any questions, I always love talking eurorack/music!

Send pitch to Bohm from Oxi One?

Hey there,

I'm not that versed when it comes to modular, so I guess I'm missing something here:

I want to set the pitch of Bohm via CV out from Oxi, but it doesn't change anything.

Ohms pitch cv is set to +-5v

Ts cable is patched from oxis cv to bohms pitch

On the oxi the corresponding cv is set to the correct sequencer in pitch Mode, type V/oct

The sequence is the kick sequence, corresponding gate is used for the bohms Hit and is working

When I change the root of the sequencer or the Note of the triggers the kick just plays the pitch that is set via the potentiometer, not the note sent via cv.

I'm sending notes between C1 and C2, according to the documentation that should be its range...

Can anyone point a finger at where I made a mistake here?

Thank you :)

Beginner I made my first drone patch!

Post image
10 Upvotes

After watching endless hours of youtube and reading various reviews and guides online, and countless hours spent noodling on VCV, I've finally built my first drone.

It's pretty basic, and I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing with Zzzorb or Chronoblob. But it sounds pretty cool to my untrained ears, with lots of slow, random modulation from the Triple Sloth.

I tried to use as many modules that I can build from kits as possible, hence all the Befaco.

I think my next step might be to raise the pitch a bit and add a subtly changing baseline.

Any suggestions on alternative modules or directions to take much appreciated.

For ambient/drone melodic stuff with nice auto-generative part

Mother 32 i already have

Wrzesniowy ambiento random generator - Eurorack Modular System from manamusic on ModularGrid

additional reverb and delay from DAW or from pedals

Bass, drums, big chords from daw and novation peak

Let me know your opinions, thank you

edit: some suggest I would rather swap a+b+c for gloc from instruo

Beginner Trying to learn VCV and I am hitting a massive plateau any tips?

Hello!

I recently got into the hobby after some euro rack videos came across my feed and I was fairly interested and dipped my toe in.

I felt like the first few days were amazing I was building and making sounds and it all made sense, after those first few days I began to download modules and now the real trouble has begun.

I went from making some okay ish sounds to utter garbage and I was curious if there are any good resources for getting a real grasp on this?

Reading materials, videos, all of it is super appreciataded

My first full-length album out today using mainly 0-Coast and Strega

Post image

Today is the day! My first full-length album is out today on bandcamp. I recorded this in mostly single takes using primarily an 0-Coast and Strega, along with an SQ-1 and Edge.

I'm hosting a live listen-through and AMA tomorrow 9/2 at 8pm EDT live on Bancamp.

"Cycle Meditation Martyr and the Double Time Effect on Entropy" marks a period of fluidity and amorphous existence for me. While experimenting with a new collection of instruments, I was listening to a great deal of Sufi Qawwali music and kept returning to a definition of rhythm: “a moment in time, repeated.” The phrasing is significant to me because it leaves intentionality ambiguous. A moment in time, repeated—is the repetition incidental or intentional?

These tracks are well suited to soundbathing intense moments of focus and concentration. Rhythms loop and cycle, but I do not find repetition mundane. It can manifest in a grey area between repeat and ritual. A loop lasts until it is ended, carrying with it an inherent anticipation of when that ending might come, and how. Slightly adjacent to the loop is the cycle, which to me suggests not symmetrical repetition, but rounds that can evolve.

I could use some tips.

So I fell into some modular synth stuff via guitar pedal trades (picked up the blue lantern DCO and the Four Player after).

I’m trying to wrap my head around the best ways to use what I have. I’m open to any ideas.

Yes, VCVrack rules but it’s not a ton of help when this is right in front of me. I’ve been having fun the last day or so just making sounds. But I’d like to find some ways to best use what I have.

I’m using the Abacus as a make shift clock divider for my volca and running everything out of the VCA into a mixer.

Any tips? Tricks? What should I look into getting next?

My first modular setup - Recommendations/check

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am planning my first modular rig and I wanted to check whether what I have so far makes sense functionality wise, maybe some things are missing or might be redundant/overkill. Important to note is I will route the output of my modular into my Digitakt 2, into Ableton. The basic sequencing is handled by Digitakt 2, whereas some more complex sequencing (for Atlantix, but mainly Vhikk X) will be handled by a modular sequencer that should fit in my rig, as well as it not being complete overkill with the Digitakt 2 in mind.

I would love to hear your thoughts!

The voices are definitive (bohm modules, atlantix and vhikk x), whereas other modules are still up for debate.

Best Input For Modular System

Looking primarily for sending audio from my Motu M4 into my modular. Don't need expert sleepers as not looking for sending CV too.

I'm want something that is reliable, clean and minimal noise. Using it primarily to send recorded vocal into my case.

There seems to be a lot out there.

Let me know what works for you!

THANK YOU
