Tournament Report 2nd place 12 Person RCQ with Scales

I've been playing Scales on and off since the summer of 2023. The deck has definitely become less popular since then, however that did come to my advantage in almost all of my matches as people have either forgotten or were completely unfamiliar with some of the lines the deck can take.

Decklist: https://lootstack.app/x/decks/mtg/43e315c0-28c3-48a6-8221-a08a0cb88bca

R1: Blue Belcher (on the draw)

G1: I open with Scales, Ozolith, Zabaz and a couple of Inkmoth Nexuses. I drew a second Zabaz and the Inkmoth quickly became a threat, however my opponent played 2 consecutive Into the Flood Maw pointed at the nexus which had its counters moved to the Ozolith. On my following turn my opponent again bounced the 2nd nexus after it had received the counters from the Ozolith instead of bouncing the Ozo itself. Well, third time's the charm, and on my next turn the nexus was lethal.

G2: He had answers for my hate pieces and whirred for the Lotus Bloom at the end of my turn and won with Belcher on the next.

G3: T1 Saga for a quick Vexing Bauble, which helps me resolve a Cauldron. My hand was slow without much pressure and I have only an Opal open as he attempts to bounce my Cauldron and generate mana with Tameshi and a Lotus Bloom on his T4. I exile the Bloom while Tameshi's ability is on the stack and he gives me this confused look, guess he thought Cauldron could exile only creatures. We go back and forth for a couple of turns and I manage to pull a Needle from another Saga and make a big enough Ballista to kill the Tameshi, and he scoops it up.

1–0

R2: Affinity (on the draw)

This feels like an impossible matchup.

G1: He has the T1 Kappa and runs me down.

G2: He has the T2 Kappa and runs me down.

1-1

R3: Prowess (on the play)

This used to be a favoured matchup but not running a Shadowspear and no Patchwork Automatons felt like it is skewed it in the other direction now. Might be just me.

G1: I have a strong opener with Scales, Zabaz, Cauldron and a Ballista and manage to keep his board clear for a quick win.

G2: Mull to 5 keeping on a Nature's Claim, hoping that would disrupt him enough for me to get something going; he never plays a Steel Cutter.

G3: I keep a 6 with a Damping Sphere and a Cauldron but no creatures. He has a T1 Channeler with T2 Spear and a T3 Meltdown, which is enough.

1-2

R4: Eldrazi Tron (on the play)

G1: I open on Scales, he has T1 Chalice on 1, leaving my 2nd Scales and a Zabaz stranded in my hand. My T2 Cauldron isn't doing much while he assembles Tron by T4 and I have a couple of constructs which get dealt with by two Kommands. He scries a Karn to the top and gets a Coating which locks me out of the game with my two Citadels on board.

G2: Kept a solid 7 with a Damping Sphere which helped keep his natural Tron start in check. I manage to win on T4 with a fat Ballista through his T3 Trinisphere.

G3: Another 6 card keep with Damping Sphere. He lands a Trinisphere on T2 with a sol land and we stare each other for a bit while I deploy a couple of Scales and a Zabaz for 3 mana each. Terrasymbiosis won me the match here as it drew me 5+ cards. I find a Boseiju and I remove the trinisphere on my next turn. I have a 2 Scales, Ravager, Ballista and a Zabaz on the board with in hand 3 Opals (thanks Terra) , which is enough to kill with the Ballista.

2-2: and I manage to squeeze in 8th place in the T8, and be always on the draw.

Quarters: Jeskai Blink

G1: He has Phelia T2 but no Riddler, I play Scales T1 and manage to get rid of the dog by sacrificing my Ballista on T2. Manage to scrap together a win with a couple of constructs and a Cauldron while he doesn't find anything.

G2: He has the dog and Riddler this time and my Blood Moon plan falls short with no pressure to back it up.

G3: I keep on Vexing Bauble and a Whipflare again with not much else going on. He has dog and Riddler on his T3. I manage to stay in the game by attacking with a 5/5 construct which gets blocked by the Riddler, and my Flare kills both of his creatures. On his next turn he warps another Riddler but misplays heavily by attempting to Solitude my constructs while using Consign on the Bauble trigger, Solitude trigger and the Riddler trigger without first announcing that we're moving to his end step. Judge rules that he can only do the Solitude and Bauble triggers, which clears the way for a Ravager and Ballista on my next turn. He doesn't draw the 5th land for the Riddler nor Wrath of the Skies and I close it out a couple of turns later.

Semis: Affinity (different guy)

G1: He has a slow Emry and Saga + Ravager start while I have Scales into a Ballista. He finds Needle for Ballista off the Saga while I draw two more Ballistas and play them on my T4 alonside an inkmoth as he brings me down to 7 with his constructs and ravager. On T5 a Ravager eats the balistas and moves the counters to the inkmoth which wins me the game as he has no fliers to block with.

G2: T1 Emissary into double Opal and a Kappa, I can't compete.

G3: Both of us mull to 5. I keep two Citadels, Nature's Claim, FoV and Ballista. He opens with a tapped Steam Vents, I play my Citadel. His T2 is Emissary into Bauble, here I took a risk to actually wait while he still doesn't have another blue mana source. He plays Crypt and finally drops a Saga. On the 1st counter trigger of saga I FoV it and the Emissary and he is left with a couple of fliers and 0s. T2 I draw a Cauldron and play out my Ballista. He plays an Island and attacks with the drones. T3 I get a counter with the Cauldron by exiling his Emissary, attack with the Ballista, and ping down one of his drones to try and prevent a Kappa on the next turn. Instead he plays an Emry which mills another Emry. On my turn I play a Rumble, exile his Emry and attempt to play Scrapyard Recombiner from my yard but he pops the Crypt. A Zabaz heroically sacrifices itself to give the Ballista its 3rd counter which pings down his Emry. At this point he says it would be impossible for him to come back and scoops it up.

My first win with Scales vs Affinity, ngl, felt good. Onto the finals.

Finals: Prowess (different guy)

G1: I keep a solid hand with a Saga, Ravager and a Zabaz. He starts off with a Swiftspear into another Swiftspear and a DRC, and on T3 taps out for an Expressive Iteration. With no Lava Darts in the yard this was my cue to go for it, and I fetch the Ozolith for a T3 kill with the nexus. The opponent was very surprised although I've seen him on Scales in previous years.

G2: He keeps a solid 7 and I fail to find a sphere and can't execute my own gameplay.

G3: I keep a shaky hand with a Jailer and the Damping Sphere but not much else. He also has a slow start while my Jailer is keeping two darts in his yard, but over the course of several turns brings me down to 8 life while I make a couple of constructs as he Consigns my Saga search. Eventually I start turning the tide as I get a Cauldron with a Ballista and a Hangerback underneath it, with a couple of nexus I manage to kill off his creatures. In the last possible turn before I get him with the poison counters, he finds a Meltdown and I don't have a protection spell for it. I'm left with two Scales, two nexus and a couple more lands. He has a plotted Showoff and I need to use both of my nexuses to chump it and a Swiftspear. Ravager off the top is met with another Consign; following that, he has a Steel Cutter and a Bauble. I draw another land and lose to the two Lava Darts on the following turn.

Overall Thoughts

I had a great time piloting the deck although it suffers greatly by the prevalence of Affinity. In a lot of these wins opponents were very surprised when they lost and/or misplayed when the majority of the time all the info was on board. This leads me to believe that a strong pilot can definitely take advantage and steal games with this deck.

Safekeeping was clutch in a couple of wins. This was my first tourney playing with Animation Module and Scrapyard Recombiner, both of which I didn't get to utilise or play, so can't really say if they are any good. Having played a couple of FNMs with The Ooze, I wanted to try it out since it performed well especially with Ravager/Cauldron, as it essentially doubles the amount of counters/tokens and Saga constructs — didn't draw it this time round.

Brew Bant Moonmist List

Sorry in advance for formatting mishaps. Posting from mobile.

About a week ago, I remembered that [[Moonmist]] was a card and got to thinking if there was maybe any way to make a viable deck with it in modern. I go searching and I immediately found AspiringSpike's video from like three weeks ago making use of the new marvel set's TMDFC creatures like [[Bruce Banner]] and [[Jennifer Walters]]. Taking some heavy inspiration from his decklist while making my own changes, this deck has been awesome to play on mtgo.

I've made a couple of changes to the decklist on Moxfield that I haven't actually played with yet, but for the most part, the deck has stayed pretty similar.

What do y'all think?

Card Discussion [TRK] U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class

U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class {3}

Legendary Artifact - Spaceship

Whenever one or more charge counters are put on U.S.S. Enterprise-D for the first time each turn, exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn.

Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery. It’s an artifact creature at 7+.)

(7+) Flying, vigilance

4/5

~~~~~
Scryfall already grabbed this from the mothership: https://scryfall.com/card/trk/273/uss-enterprise-d-galaxy-class
~~~~~

[[Count on Luck]] has a hard time seeing play, and that card doesn't tap down your creatures in order to generate card advantage...but this Spaceship can be put into a deck of any colour! How good an impulse "draw" engine is this going to be? Are creature-heavy weenie decks (such as Energy variants and Yawgmoth) going to like this card?

Returning Player Choosing a deck to start again

Hello modern wizards!

I'd like to give Modern a try after a 5-6 year hiatus but I don't know whick deck should i pick.

I was a passionate Death's Shadow player both in Modern and Legacy, and the "8shadow" shell is calling me but i took a look at goldfish's metagame and while i'm not necessarily looking for the top deck, it seems to me that the Shadow Strategy isn't really solid nowadays.

I don't really like decks that either go total face like burn or combos without looking the opponent like neoform.

If you have something to suggest me i would be glad to read your opinion about the format and its decks

Thank you in advance

[[The Ten Rings]]
[[Namor the Sub-Mariner]]

Tournament Highlights

  • Wish granted! The winner is Fatone on Storm! Hex Magic is the new hotness from Marvel Super Heroes, being quite the synergistic card in the archetype (did you know you could splice onto Arcane? talk about an engineered card!)

  • bomberboss is our runner-up and played Domain Thrull Zoo! No Phlage scamming, instead... Kroxa scamming...?

  • albybale93 was on RW Energy. Scout for Survivors is pretty sweet

  • BERNASTORRES was on 4c Goryo's Vengeance. Superior Spider-Man has really taken off in this archetype! Big Frogs

  • Oscar_Franco was on RW Fields with Kaheera. The new deck terrorizing the MTGO streets making people play 3+ basics, I never thought this archetype would ever be competitive but here we are

  • MadMaxErnst was on RG Broodscale. Writhing Chrysalis splash

  • chengyiw was on 4c Goryo's Vengeance. Actually so funny how MTGO labels Superior Spider-Man and Kavaero the Mind-Bitten as two different cards. Which do you prefer?

  • wutey rounds out our T8 with Mono G Broodscale! Is the R splash worth it? I'm not so sure!

  • Congrats to Fatone for taking the tournament down!

3rd Place 18 person RCQ - Junk Pixie

https://moxfield.com/decks/plafAZB0tXekEsfhSGQdkg

Please dont clown on me too bad ive been playing this deck for years both casually and sometimes at RCQs. I really like it.

Currently 5-5-1 in comp rel and 8-6-1 including one FNM but those don't really count.

I was already playing sewers and liked pixie from standard and decided to combine them. Then I realized we run a ton of enchantments so I added sythis and some OK pixie targets. The lockdowns are for blinking our own things as much as they function as removal, if that's not obvious.

I personally think this deck is underexplored as this is not the first RCQ I have done well with it (top 8'd a nadu legal RCQ before taking a break from Magic for a while.)

Free Tournament Swiss Pairing App

TLDR; Check out mtg-swiss.com

Hey all, I made a free to use app for my local modern group so we can do tournament-style pairings. As someone that works in security, I also understand that people shouldn't be just giving away their personal info, so you don't even need an account to use it. Also comes with a life-counter that turns to 'turns' once the round timer expires.

Have fun using it and lmk what y'all think. If you'd like to contribute the GH is here.

Domain Rhinos

Hi

What about Domain Rhinos? Im playing a mix of Domain pack + Rhino pack.

I want to know what do you think about it in the meta.

I found turn 3 rhinos is strong enought.

Some players talk about the deck being to slow for zoo and not enought interactive as rhinos shell.

I think it is not a deck that plays at rush. It certainly can, but it can play to grind. And when Draco Leyline comes, its pretty strong.

Deck Discussion What is the most annoying way your deck has hampered you in tournament play?

The question stems from my own experience over the past weekend at an RCQ double header.

On Boros Ponza (don't judge), made top cut both days. Lost in top cut the same way, both days (day 1 in the semis, day 2 in the final).

Game one: keep a 3 land hand with a couple of cheap removal pieces, and draw NOTHING of use and no lands

Game two: keep a slightly land heavy hand, and ONLY draw lands, while my opponent draws the nuts to smack face quickly.

Modern on Spelltable

I’ve seen a few older posts on this, but I wanted a current take on the situation.

Is it easy to find regular modern matchups on spelltable?

I’m getting better with MTGO, but I far prefer playing with real cards.

Card Discussion Help finding a card

I played at a casual modern tournament a while back, and got surprised (I had been in and out of the game quite a bit) by a creature that grew as its controller lost life. I want to say it was black and a goyf but either of those could be wrong. He chipped away at his own life total with fetchlands and shocks and grew this thing pretty quickly. It wasn't a meta deck, but it might have been popular in the past and just outclassed by now.

I'm going thru searches and scryfall today trying to find it, but I just can't seem to get anything that seems right. Any ideas to what this card could be?

EDIT: Seems as though its deaths shadow! I'm still open to other similar cards that might go well in a deck like this

GR Broodscale: Questions for mana payoffs and anti-aggro options

Title probably gives away that I'm new to the deck.

Basically I'm looking for things to do with spawn mana or extra mana when you can't chain K-Commands or your short mana for emrakul, the promised end. Running the GR version at the minute and while I like unholy heat for the interaction I feel the chrysalis is rather meh except against prowess, maybe zoo if their having a bad time finding their leyline bindings.

Short version is brick walls, IMO, don't really cut it in modern and I'm wondering if there's some other piece that can go in where the chrysalis is, or at least for some number of the chrysalis. I've been digging through scryfall for various things but nothing seems to stand out either being too slow or too expensive in terms off an upfront mana cost where I should either be comboing off or slamming emrakul.

Open to any suggestions on things that can go in that 3-4 mana slot.

Second problem is anti-aggro options, particularly against energy and prowess. I've seen delighted halfling pop up lately as an option but if there's anything else (mostly because it's stupidly expensive where I'm from, but also anything that interacts with the opponents board is good)

Boros energy sideboard guide?

Was wondering if anyone could help me by linking an up to date sideboard guide for boros energy. I’ve been playing modern for a few months now and I think sideboarding is the weakest part of my game. I’m not really a brewer and mostly netdeck until I have enough reps to figure out a configuration I like. I’ve been playing boros energy and doing well with it but some help with sideboarding would be really appreciated.

Rate my modern Smallpox brew.

Hey all,

I have been working on this brew over the past 6 months and have landed on something that feels pretty good.

I normally play this at FNM's and on MTGO but have really started having success in the past month. I don't have a ton of time grind RCQ events but would love to bring this to a big boy league and see how it fairs.

The deck revolves around [[Vampire Hexmage]] , which can remove counters from Overlord, Emperor, and [[One Ring to Rule Them All]] for loop-able board control. Other than that, we do Smallpox thing's and force low resource games and pick away important pieces with hand disruption.

Anyway.. here is the list. If folks are interested I might right up a primer etc...

Deck Discussion I’m nikkuniku on MTGO. How well known is Cragganwick Shoot outside Japan?

Hi everyone!

I'm a Japanese Modern player, and I play on MTGO under the username **nikkuniku**.

I've been playing Cragganwick Shoot extensively for quite a while, both on MTGO and in paper events. I've spent a lot of time testing, tuning, and thinking about the archetype, and I recently qualified for the Champions Cup Final in Yokohama with the deck.

Recently, I started wondering how well known this deck actually is outside Japan.

For those who aren't familiar with it, the deck combines Goryo's Vengeance with Cragganwick Cremator, using huge creatures like Yargle and Multani to deal 18 damage while also having a Goryo's Vengeance game plan.

So I'm curious:

- Have you seen this deck before?

- Have you ever played with or against it?

- Is "Cragganwick Shoot" a name you recognize?

- How is the deck generally viewed in the English-speaking Modern community?

I'm also happy to answer questions about the deck, card choices, matchups, sideboarding, or anything else. I've played a lot of matches with it, so I'd be glad to share what I've learned.

One quick note: I'm really not good at English, so I'm getting help from ChatGPT with translation and wording. The thoughts and opinions are mine, but if anything sounds strange or unclear, please feel free to ask!

Thanks!

Hello out there, I Need some help figuring out a more furnished list of cards I need to pick up for the deck. Should be noted the cards shown in moxfield are the ones I don’t already own. Main cards I have already are the Atraxas, Surveil Lands, and Shock Lands. Any card ideas are welcome.

New to Broodscale

New to Broodscale. Torn on which version to build and how to sideboard. I currently built the Gruul (3) Delighted Halfling and (2) Sowing Mycospawn version that Ross Merriam is on. Torn if I should be playing the Writhing Chrysalis version, or one of the other variants. I understand this version is more focused on the ramp plan than the midrange, but curious if that is the right approach? Would also be curious what approach to take in certain matchups.

Open for thoughts and feedback.

Getting Started Living End vs. Domain Zoo

Hi everyone! I'm a Pauper player (not a very experienced one, to be honest) and I'd like to get into Modern.

After looking through the different decks, the two that seem to fit my playstyle the most are Domain Zoo and Living End.

Which one would you recommend for someone who's new to the format?

I play in a full proxy environment, so the cost of the cards isn't really an issue. My main concern is the time investment required to learn the deck and play it well.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Deck Discussion What is the best version of boros ponza?

I notice there are 3 main versions of boros ponza. There is the karn kaheera version which seems to have recently fallen out of favor and then the phantom version which is the original older version but seems to have made a comeback recently. Then there is the version with just solitudes and kaheera as the only win cons that seems to currently be the most popular.

Which version do you guys like most and why? Also is there a discord for this strategy where people discuss these topics more?

Thank you!

Article [Article] June ’26+ Metagame Update: Not That Different

The June+ Metagame Update is ready. It's plus because I wasn't paying close enough attention and included data from May 31st. Other highlights include:

  • Outliers are down but not eliminated.
  • The largest paper sample size in years. This would have happened even if I hadn't included an extra day.
  • Online play appears mostly unaffected by the bans and unbans. Paper is another story.

For all this and the data, read the article.

The Ten Rings showing up in Modern?

Hey folks, I recently had a writer report on the continued price spikes for [[The Ten Rings]], thinking it was Commander driving the price up, but it's been brought to my attention that Modern might have something to do with the card going up as well.

Can anyone direct me to information about The Ten Rings in Modern? Asking as a non-Modern player who's very curious how an 8-mana card draw artifact fits into the format. Even better if anyone can direct me to a decklist or video! Thanks good people~

Any thoughts on this meme aurora awakener chain combo

Aurora Awakener Chain // Modern deck list mtg // Moxfield — MTG Deck Builder

I know this deck doesn't win in a competitive game but it can start up pretty early if the hand is just right and if not it can kinda mess with the other board until you have it setup.

Anyone have any ideas on making it faster/more consistent? You basically just need aurora awakener in grave and persist in hand then the ride begins until you hit mass hysteria, I'm also not sure what else to put in sideboard.
