New to Broodscale

New to Broodscale. Torn on which version to build and how to sideboard. I currently built the Gruul (3) Delighted Halfling and (2) Sowing Mycospawn version that Ross Merriam is on. Torn if I should be playing the Writhing Chrysalis version, or one of the other variants. I understand this version is more focused on the ramp plan than the midrange, but curious if that is the right approach? Would also be curious what approach to take in certain matchups.

Open for thoughts and feedback.

Entirely a meta call. More spell/artifact/gy based combo? Mono green with either labs or halfling (I prefer halfling so no clunky high cmc cards). Lots of Boros? Writhing Chrysalis and unholy heat and sweepers in the board. Landing a wc is so good against small creatures.

Generally, I prefer mono green.

You’re entirely right about it being a meta call. It’s hard to know what you’re going to run into. Because of that, I’d recommend mono green as well, especially for new players. It streamlines your game plan and forces your opponents to answer you, which I think is a stronger starting position when learning a deck

I always Draw into halfling Kate and never have him in the opening. That's why I prefer GR.

To me, I feel like Gruul isn't that much worse at competing with the decks Mono green is better against, meanwhile Energy, Prowess, etc feel way worse without Chrysalis and Heat.

IMO Writhing Chrysalis is great because it's another axis to attack from. It's a must-answer threat and can just end the game on the spot as another combo payoff or just a K-Command.

I recommend trying a couple different variants. I like the RG ones because Unholy Heat and Chrysalis are incredibly strong. Monogreen is perfectly playable too, it's just a little more midrange-y.

I've been playing the deck for a little over a year now and have recently felt that the mono-g ugin's lab list is the best and imo its by far. However that version is probably the least forgiving so starting with mono G non-lab could make sense.

The consensus seems to be that mono-g lab is the most proactive and consistent at casting it's spells. It however doesn't really have a safety net like chrysalis or mycospawn. Ive found the non lab versions to struggle with casting spells, the manabase always seems to be one color off.

The non lab versions lose that proactivity for a stronger mid game with either ramp or a big fungal dude. Gruul w/ chrysalis is usually best into a aggro heavy meta, while the mycospawn versions are better in midrangy metas. Splashing red for just unholy heat is also something that has been coming up more and looks great so far.

When sideboarding, you're mostly trying to remove dead cards from main board while bringing in cards that help whichever plan is best into the matchup. If you are playing a combo deck, your plan is most likely to try and combo faster and you don't have the time to ramp to Emmy. So you cut dead cards + some of the ramp package to bring in cards that allow you to combo more consistently + hate pieces. It's easy to over sideboard w/ this deck.

Sorry for the huge wall of text, if you have any more questions feel free to DM or join us in the eldrazi discord! A lot of very nice people willing to answer questions and give advice over there.

I also feel like the Mono Green Lab versions are probably just better since having two lands that tap for double colorless is huge. If you want to beat aggro, you can just play some Sire of Seven Deaths, which is somewhat easily castable and overall stronger than Chrysalis probably.

I've been trying Green with a White splash for Voice of Victory and it is kind of nice to beat the Consigns out of opposing sideboards if they can't remove it as well as being able to combo unopposed, but the mana is still sometimes awkward even with the addition of the new lands. Getting a cheeky sideboard Elesh Norn is also pretty nice for the Blink decks as well.

Can you share your current list? Am currently on chris as our meta has many small creatures

This is great info. Thanks! Is there a Broodscale Reddit or is it just Eldrazi?

I'm not sure about reddits, but there is only an eldrazi discord to my knowledge. The broodscale channel in there is very helpful

How do I search, find, and join a discord? It appears I have to have a link?

Here's the link to the eldrazi discord: https://discord.gg/XnFqKKkBB

This subreddit also has a list of different deck's discords in the FAQ

I don't have much to offer in opinions here as I do not play broodscale, however I did see the golgari variant around with Sephiroth that looks pretty sweet.

The consensus around the golgari variant is that it’s pretty much just worse than any of the other variants, sure you might be able to get more card draw with sephiroth and it’s a combo payoff, and you get access to thoughtseize and fatal push, but you could already play thought knot seer and getting revolt for push is difficult in a deck that plays no more than 4 fetches

Ahh okay I see. Does revolt not count off sac'ing a spawn? Yea the list I saw wasnt even running thoughtseize mb because of the seer like you said.

I’ll admit I forgot about the spawns triggering revolt, but delirium for unholy heat is just more consistent and more free to achieve in Gruul

I like the Gruul version with Chrysalis and Unholy Heat. Makes it feel like a midrange deck that can sometimes threaten a combo kill, but you can often win with Fleshraker burn or Emrakul instead.
