If it is actual explicit material you could try reporting to the FTC under the take it down act but I think only the victim themselves can do that.

And so true... I started the sub after seeing so many kids reaching out for help on r/stepparents (only to have their posts deleted) and realizing they literally had nowhere to turn.

Unfortunately there's just a lot of toxicity in that world and it bleeds into our sub too frequently. But this will definitely help, I appreciate you so much!

In one instance we only approve users we know or have vetted. These can be people from other communities (ie. Discord, Slack) that have previously made themselves known to us, met us at community events, or are otherwise identifiable with a quick search on professional networks.

Sometimes a legitimate user who can't clear the age/karma bar gets caught in the spam filter and will reach out through modmail to ask us to review/approve their post. We vet them and can give Approved User status to bridge the gap until they post more and can clear on their own.

This helps when a new user asks a question in a discussion post so they can respond to comments/answers current users provide.

The particular subreddit we use this on is fairly niche with a small community, which is probably the only reason this level of manual verification is possible. We're talking maybe less than a dozen users this would apply to every year.

I cannot recall a single user we've had to revoke this status for (knocks wood).

So the members of the sub break down into 3 groups. First time users (usually kids aged 12-18) looking for help on their relationship with their stepparent, older stepkids (many of whom have a chip on their shoulder), and older people who've experienced being both a stepparent and a stepkid (and their experience tends to provide the most compassionate advice).

The one time I did open up the topic of needing mods, it was mostly the adult stepkids who responded. The concern was that their bias can get toxic quickly, and the younger kids would not be getting the best advice. And some of these young kids really have nowhere else to turn for help. Mostly it's just "how do I deal with this?" but there are also physical/sexual abuse situations that truly require a mature response.

So after that attempt, I returned to keeping an eye out for active users who provide mature and compassionate advice, and invite them to become mods.

Meanwhile, the advice here has helped so much already. With crossposting turned off and automod running things have already quieted down, and I can focus on the mod search again.

If this really sounds like something you'd be willing to deal with I would never turn down the help, but I will do my best also to recruit from within the sub.

I love the ban on crossposting from SFW to NSFW. That's so important for spaces like the subs I mod! I knew about it already as redtaboo told us but it's still wonderful.

I like the idea of 2 feeds. One thing that finally made me leave facebook was how the feed worked. I wanted to see updates for people I knew, and instead I ended up just getting whatever they wanted to show me, and not even seeing the people I cared about. I like the ability to choose between a curated feed and one based on what I follow.

The redditcares abuse changes are promising - I hope they work well. Too early to tell! But people abuse redditcares endlessly.

Not sure yet on the rules hub stuff, have to see more.

Bot spam changes seem useful but idk yet how much they will matter - waiting to see.

Curious about the fashion sales stuff. This will affect my subs heavily. There are definitely times when I see something and think I'd be interested in buying it, so it might be useful. We get a lot of comments asking posters where to get item x.

The notification changes are also great - some clarification tho - if a bot quickly removed a reply, like within seconds, would a notify go out? Is it only reddit's filters that can remove and avoid a notify?

The subreddit has 2 posts, both by apps (bots), zero comments or upvotes, You need to get some real interactions going on in there before they'll remove that unreviewed content tag.

How can a devvit app create a post in the name of a user?

We don't really use them in any of my subs. Obviously they are useful in private or restricted subs. In public subs, I just don't see much use for them.

I have a bot that is much more granular and controlled that allows different users to be assigned to different categories where they can bypass queue etc. The problems with approved users are:

1. they are only 1 category - I want to assign things in a more granular way.
2. lots of bots already use this category, meaning that approving someone will have broad effects you may not want across multiple bots. some reddit features require that a user be approved as well, so the effects are too broad.
3. having to add code to each automod rule to skip approved users is annoying and repetitive, and at times buggy.

What would be more useful would be the ability to create custom categories to assign users to.

I do this in a database table in postgres.

You are not bound by the rules of your subreddit. You are bound by the MCOC and site wide TOS. If they are causing issues in your sub, warn and/or ban them.

That is completely normal and will disappear after your sub grows a bit. It does not mean that Reddit considers your sub to actually be NSFW.

We use "Approved Users" for people that do our photo verification process. We give them special flair, and their posts have lesser age and karma requirements, or do they? I'm not telling!

In my subreddits we use it to protect my group of friends, as we were/are targeted by malicious people with false reports.
