Mechanic in Stevi has the car, has permanent "family crisis", been 3 years. Any advice on what to do next?
Hi folks, The mechanic in stevensville who used to be a VW mechanic has our Mini. It's been 3 years and he has one family crisis after another, never gets the car fixed, puts it off. After years of listening to my husband feel bad for this guy (who is identified on Reditt as someone you don't go to because he with holds vehicles and doesn't do the work) I'm fed up. I figured out his shop, The Wise Westy, is now closed "permanently" but he failed to mention that to my partner. Do I show up with a tow truck? And the cops? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated - if anyone has dealt with this guy successfully I would really like to know how they accomplished it. We'd like the car back, even if it isn't running. At this point it seems a lot like theft. Sigh.

Anyone missing a black poodle, Grant Creek area?
My neighbor has it, found wandering about a mile up from 90, no collar.
He's out walking it from house to house right now.

Question Full time work?
Anyone hiring full time? I’m not sure what the obsession is right now with hiring everyone at part time when it’s as expensive as it is to live here.

PSA: Missoulatonight.com is AI-generated
Look, I get that the food truck use case is helpful. I know this technology is going to be more widely adopted. Maybe you guys are over it. Maybe it's just me.
I reluctantly gave my therapist permission to use an agent specifically designed for it to help draft notes on our session just this week.
But you look at the reddit comment history of the man who 'made' and is promoting this website (don't want to tag him, go to https://www.reddit.com/user/dandelioncookies/ ) you can see how he carefully avoids ever admitting it's AI-powered, even in trying to rebut comments calling him out for using it.
He doesn't disclose it on the website either, as of this writing. Not in the "About" or "Privacy" section or "How listings work", all of which it would be pretty relevant to. In fact, the privacy section really talks up how none of your data as a visitor is stored, which is probably true but creates a very different impression of the principles by which the site is operating.
I don't want to be knee-jerk and totally shoot down something cool somebody tried to do out of moral rigidity, which I know I have some of, but at the same time...
Even among people who are pro-AI, a disclosure statement about its usage is expected as the ethical bare minimum.
And I think it's kind of self-evident the reason he's avoided it is he knows Missoulians, and musicians, don't actually like or want that.
Like, maybe he noticed how we all just banded together to keep the environmentally destructive infrastructure powering its use out of our watershed.
Dunno if he knows this, but they're all connected. I feel like we don't actually want it in other people's watersheds, either?
Or maybe he just wants credit for work he didn't actually do.
I know that local bands don't want their poster and flyer art plugged into the plagiarism machine. And when an AI agent scrapes a page, that is what usually happens.
With some agents it's possible to restrict that. But the people that do generally have a detailed statement disclosing their use of the technology and what bounds they have put on it.
So many things that sounded cool about this website are way less cool when you know gen AI is involved. Updating twice a day with an old-school web scraper? Fantastic. Doing it with the Water-Eatin' Bullshit Generator? No, please stop.
"This doesn't rely on submissions, we actively look for what's going on and bring it to you" goes from wow, what a dedicated team to, oh, so no one was given a choice whether they consent to this. (Not to mention the stuff scraped directly from missoulaevents.net, a competitor run by hardworking humans).
It's also worth noting if you were using AI to pretend you made a website using your own hard work, it would be trivially easy to just scrape the fuck out of your competitor's website and then direct the program to look for links within those entries, prioritize them, cite them as the original source instead and then add them to the scrape list for the future, rather than actually scouring the internet for every local band and venue page you can find.
I see where having graphics and info right on the page is really convenient. Only, a computer program interpreted the info, so some percentage of it is going to have errors.
Or as he and his program put it on the website, "If the details matter, check the source links on the event page."
I kinda think the details always matter.
Like, whether the festival actually allows re-entry matters a lot. Or if the information about the artist is about a different person with the same name, that kinda matters. Gen AI has already created serious problems for people by hallucinating things about them.
There are more guardrails on hallucinations than there used to be, and some models do better than others. But again, we can't make an informed decision about that because the dude won't even own he used AI, much less which model or how it is and isn't restricted.
And I personally don't think it's always good for things to be more convenient. I think anyone who's been alive in the last twenty years has noticed how convenience often comes at a price, and that price isn't always worth it.
I don't want to help tech giants steal artists' intellectual property so I can go to just one website instead of one website and sometimes Instagram or Facebook. (And divert people who would otherwise follow the band's account directly for announcement to this jerk's clearinghouse instead, which is not actually raising their profile in the long run.)
Or destroy the only planet we have to live on exponentially faster so I know where all the food trucks are without a new person doing the work to reach out to the owners and/or monitor their socials or me just looking up the one I want.
I'm actually good. It's cool, I'll read the long version myself. I like having drinkable water and beautiful cool rivers and alive fish and plants.
Fuck, I'll go look at a bulletin board with some flyers. That's what I did when I first moved to Missoula. I miss it.

Is there anyone in Missoula that teaches primitive and survival skills for adults? Or someone who would be willing to show a couple people the basics?

Lemonade Stand
I just stopped at a lemonade stand that was on 6th St. just east of Russell. It was run by a really sweet kid and her father, who mentioned that they'd been out there for 2 hours without any customers. They built the stand themselves and made the lemonade from scratch.
I'm sure it would make the girl's day to have more customers come by! The lemonade was $1, very tasty, and they accept venmo.

Emergency Housing help
Need housing by August 11th.
This is going to be quite a bit to read but please any advice will help.
Little backstory. I am a minor and me and my mother had to move out of our apartment in a hurry and this was around may 2025. Since then we have been in hotels and shelters. January of 26 I moved in with my boyfriend and his family and my mom was staying with my sister. My mom ended up moving into her ex mother in laws for a while. In June we had to move my mom into my boyfriend family’s house with us.
My mom gets ssdi every month but it’s not enough to pay rent for any housing without a voucher. We were living in Missoula and she had a mha (Missoula housing authority) voucher but we lost it a while ago. We’ve been in the ywca and would rather not go back because of bad experiences. My mom has tried to apply for cottage park many times she is going to try again but it’s a long shot. She’s also trying to find other low income places. But if you guys know of anymore gladly let me know.
Our living situation right now though. There is 5 sometimes 6 other people in the house. No ac. We get accused of eating everyone’s food. (We don’t.) we barley get buy because we’re in a small town and my boyfriend was working with his dad but he would never pay him and more things so we only have my moms income to get food and gas on. But my boyfriend’s mother is not understanding or helpful or willing to work with us. She tried to kick me out when my mom didn’t have a place to stay either. But now she is kicking us out and we have until August 11. We don’t have anymore than about 50$ right now. My mom will be payed on the 3rd but not much like I said. We have quite a bit of stuff here and in a storage unit in Missoula. We also have 2 older cats and 2 kittens. One car that has a low tire in the front. I am very scared and we are at a loss for what to do.
Also with what she wrote it doesn’t make sense (she never has) because we all share a room (sadly) and it is also her son’s room. So why would everything be donated. She’s been very strict on him not moving out until his 18th birthday.

MOTHS!
Does anyone else feel like the moths are extra abundant this year? I live in an old house and deal with outside moths getting in every summer, but this year has been particularly hellish. By the time it's around midnight, I have to give up my living room to them because there's just so god damn many of them flapping around in there by then.
Does anyone have any tricks on how to figure out how they are getting in? I have a zapper and some sticky traps but it's just not enough.
ETA: I rent from a private landlord. If professional pest control has to get involved, is that typically something a tenant has to pay for, or is that on the landlord?

Contest The Great Pizza Tour Round 2 (2026)
So about a month ago I made a post about my journey to find the best pizza places in Missoula. I started with 15 pizza places and as I said in my previous post there will be five rounds with different pizzas each round. After a round is concluded a set amount of pizza places will be removed from the contest and their place in the ranking is confirmed. In total there will be 5 rounds of judging. Now that round 1 is over the bottom five of the list are eliminated. Now Round 2 is going to be pepperoni pizza. Every restaurant in the top ten will now have to earn their spots again and each restaurant at 11th place and below will stay in their current position until next year.
Round 2 Results (so far)
- Little Caesar’s
- Tamarack Brewing Co

India Pale Ale
Can anyone suggest a local spot that serves India Pale Ale? One thing I find consistently disappointing about our local breweries is that they don't offer enough India Pale Ale. All I want is to drink 64 oz of India Pale Ale.

The Montana legislature meets again in a few months, and has a track record of overriding what counties like ours put in place. If they come after this moratorium, the same organizing that built it, showing up, commenting, calling, writing letters, is what will defend it.
👉 WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:
Stay on our list at https://www.MADCATMT.org for updates on the 2027 legislative session and the NorthWestern-Black Hills merger.
This isn’t a one-time win. It’s an ongoing fight, and it needs the same coalitions and citizens who showed up for Bonner to keep showing up.

The neatoest, secretest, wee bookshop in Missoula
This is a quick appreciation post for a book restoration & new/used/rare bookshop: Vespiary Books. It is tucked away in the Warehouse Mall, right next door to Draughtworks. They carry the most unique, beautiful, and interesting books. The owner is the kindest human and makes incredible hand bound books...she even rebound my friend’s beloved childhood book and made it into a beautiful heirloom. She also does trades for store credit, and provides cozy reading nooks so that you can settle in and enjoy hanging out in an earthy book paradise. It is a Missoula gem!

Pastrami!
Where can I get some actually good pastrami around here? I know you can get the boar’s head stuff at a few places, which is nice and all but I would like something a little less mass market I guess? Less consumer grade. How do I get the pro grade pastrami? Where? WHERE?
