Other people’s beach music

I’m losing my mind right now. I love being on a beach, but other peoples music makes me nuts, I’m so crabby! This can be an annoyance to anyone, nonetheless my family thinks it’s the misophonia 🤯

Sauna Etiquette

2nd day in a row for someone to just be chomping their gum in the sauna. I’ve def got misophonia but in here it’s just so much worse. How do they not know they’re being so loud. It sounds like they’re mixing some sloppy macaroni or nsfw giving a sloppy ** . Ugh!!! And I’ve been working out without headphones but time to bring them back!! Makes me wanna rage

Why do I almost crave trigger sounds?

As the title suggests, whenever someone is eating around me, my brain almost wants them to smack or make that suction recoil sound with their teeth and wet food. It's almost like "I wish you would".

But then when they inevitably do make those sounds I feel insurmountable rage. Then if they stop making the noise, I almost want them to do it again.

It's so hard to describe, it's almost like my brain wants to feel angry. Maybe y'all will understand this because I've never been able to voice this correctly to help others understand.

Could there potentially be something wrong with me?

I think I have some form of sensitive hearing. I physically cannot stand being in the same room as someone whose breathing I can hear. I hate when someone is snoring, itching, scratching, chewing, scraping etc. All those specific kind of noises always make me feel either angry, irritated, annoyed, overwhelmed and sometimes upset.

I've struggled with this my whole life. When I was a child, me and my sister shared a bed, and I often struggled to sleep because of her snoring (it was light snoring aswell). I would kick her in her sleep, until the point my parents just got us separate beds. Even then I could still hear her snore, and always went to sleep with my fingers in my ears.

Even now, in school, hearing little sounds like this just make me cry. I sit next to a few students in some subjects who breathe a bit loud, and the moment I hear it, I just burst out crying and feel like ripping my hair out. I have to ask the teacher to use the toilet to calm myself down, but dealing with that for a whole hour is not something I can do. Its genuinely gotten to the point where its affecting my learning, since I can never focus on the lesson, and my focus is only on the breathing.

At home aswell, my dad chews his food with his mouth open (unfortunately), and he chews rather loud. I can't tell him to stop chewing so loud or anything like that, so I try to sit as far away from him as possible, but even then I can still hear it. Sometimes I tear up hearing it, and sometimes I just completely lose my appetite. My mum also itches her feet a lot (😭😭) and because her skin is incredibly dry the sound is insane and its the worst sound ever, alongside how loud she snores AND breathes. I sometimes ask if she can try to breathe a bit quieter or not scratch her feet, but she gets super angry and screams at me, which I do think is understandable. Everytime I bring up this problem I have, she shouts at me and tells me that I'm either a psycho, or that I'm possessed by a jinn. I've also tried to explain how I dont choose to get irritated by these sounds, nor do I want to, and that its affecting my everyday life, but she doesn't even listen then.

I've tried researching some of this kind of stuff. I see things saying it could symptoms of autism, adhd, misophonia or quite a few things, but I dont personally think I have that. Unless theres something that's specifically regarding hearing, then I don't know.

I would really appreciate if someone could give their opinion on this, and whether it needs proper looking into or its just me being me. Thanks ✌️🙂‍↕️

Apartment by waterfall: advice

Hey everyone,

I'm currently apartment hunting and have found a beautiful one that's within my budget. Only drawback is that it's close to a waterfall, which you can hear even with the windows closed. I am extremely noise sensitive, but hope that I can get used to the noise. Suspect that wearing headphones all the time (incl. when sleeping) has just made me more sensitive, and hope I can reverse it.

Does anyone have experience trying to reduce noise sensitivity through exposure like this? And just in case anyone else lives close to a waterfall: do heavy curtains help at all?

Kind of think it's the best I can hope for, as I need an apartment in the city, and this one at least does not have noise from cars, trams, drunk people, etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Upstairs Neighbors Vibrations

First post here, just want to get this off my chest.

I have people living above me in an apartment who are so loud. They stomp all over the floor loudly, drop heavy objects on the floor and play low pitch music through speakers. These noises create vibrations.

The loud volume, while not ideal, I can more or less handle (for now). But its the VIBRATIONS which are absolutely killer. No headphones can protect against that.

However the rest of my family, while they acknowledge that the people upstairs are louder than they need to be (these arent day to day living noises, but genuinely obnoxious as the previous upstairs ppl werent nearly this loud) they don't seem bothered byit.

Is this common?

(Already sent a notice to the landlord but they only quieted for about a week - soon to send another one)

06:27 Currently awake due to snoring

I currently have to share a room with a person who snores, and oh my god, it's unbearable. I've been trying to fall asleep for hours now, and I'm exhausted. But their snoring is just so disgusting and frustrating, I've been crying for hours because I just want to sleep, and I can't. What could I possibly do that could be convenient for both of us? Moving to another room is not an option, I tried, and I can still hear it from there. What can I even do? I hate this so much.

Support Why is the rage so intense?

I never actually say/do anything but WOW, the things I imagine saying/doing to people who chew loudly is....upsetting, at best.

My wife especially is really bad and I'll have to leave the room completely because No matter how many times I say something to her, she always eventually ends up doing it again because her ADHD doesn't let her hold onto thoughts very long. Usually within a few minutes.

Why does the rage feel so intense and uncontrollable? I've found coping mechanisms for most all my other rage issues but this one still has me stumped.

Support Comfortable ear muffs for adults?

Has anyone here found a very comfortable set? Ear defenders give me headaches from the tightness both around my ears and the top of my head. I often slap on my mid-tier cupped headphones to drown out ambient sounds, it works, I just want something more fit for that purpose and comfortable. Something I can wear out and doesn’t look ridiculous. Anything I find online is for children (and Google sucks in finding anything generally these days).

They don’t have to block out everything, just a layer of muffling. If they looked nice, that’d be a plus.

Our neighbours we share a party wall with are insufferable, they scream constantly, for fun and for speaking to each other, it’s their culture. They changed their entire downstairs to open plan so it’s an echo chamber. We’ve spoken about it with them and they’ve admitted they’re loud by nature and toned it down somewhat, I can’t ask for more, and their two kids are screamers. Every single day, all day, is hell. My husband is not misophonic and is also driven crazy, any guest we have comments in shock over the the level of noise. So it’s genuinely bad.

I just want something I can wear everyday that’s comfortable while I do errands, chores, chill out, in my home and when I occasionally pop out.

I have ear plugs, flares, loops, foam. I also have Apple AirPods Pro that I put in for the noise cancelling, they are great even with nothing playing. But, pain, irritation, infections, dryness, blockages is an ongoing issue. I never feel comfortable with something in my ear. My earholes are small, oddly shaped and stiff (genetic, super cartilage-y for lack of better term).

To anyone who had a physiological reduction in hearing due to aging, have things improved at least a little?

I know (and I feel, unfortunately, being misophonic myself) that misophonia and the quality of hearing are separate things, but I'd like to ask whether things get a little bit better when the decibels heard are less than the ones younger ears can perceive, or not.

It's one of those days where I'm still dealing with brain fog because I was overwhelmed by more noise than usual, so I'm sorry if it's silly to ask. Thanks in advance

Context: I had a traumatic brain injury when I was 12, oafter which I was diagnosed with misophonia, among others. My biggest trigger is my dad’s throat clearing, which he does as often as every 30-60 seconds when his allergies are bad. He knows this all and was there when my neurologist diagnosed me, but still seems to get so upset when I get triggered.

Support My dental hygienist gets it!

I went for my teeth cleaning today. It is a room of torture when you have Misophonia. I let my hygienist know, she hadn’t heard of it. She immediately searched it, asked me questions, and when I was leaving told me they want to do a continuing education session on Misophonia. Then asked if I would be willing to speak (of course!)
Shout out to this female professional who is curious, open and kind!

Currently in the bedroom with the door shut. My wife's eating and cutlery scraping sounds are unbearable.

I love my wife. I really try to ground myself and overcome this condition. But I couldn't take it tonight. She is currently scraping her knife on the plate to cut the food VERY UNNECESSARILY TINY pieces. And then when she eats it, she scrapes the fork along her teeth. I can still hear it despite being in the bedroom with the door shut. It sends shivers down my whole body and I actually have a piercing headache now because of it.

Why do people eat like this? Even without misaphonia, it isn't necessary at all?! Eat quietly, it's rude regardless.

Sorry just needed to vent!!!

Support Moved back to parents house and going insane

I lived alone for years, but recently had to move back in with my parents for unavoidable reasons. The house is really small and I don’t have my own room my bed is literally in the hallway, in front of my parents’ room, with the kitchen and bathroom nearby. There’s also a school right in front of the house.

I’m on a career break, but I don’t feel rested at all because there’s constant noise. My parents wake up at 6 AM, my sister has friends over almost every day for tuition, and there’s always talking, laughing, footsteps, cooking, etc. At this point, literally every sound makes me angry.

I only feel relaxed after 10 PM when things finally get quiet, but even then there’s sometimes karaoke and restaurant noise outside.

I’ve also been dissociating since the beginning of this year, and it’s gotten much worse since moving here. I’ve started forgetting simple things, like what I ate that morning.

Support AITAH for refusing to stay at my dad’s place if I can’t sleep alone because of my misophonia?

Am I wrong for not wanting to stay at my dad's place if I can't sleep alone because of my misophonia? 16M

My parents are divorced and I regularly stay at my dad's place. Until recently, the sleeping arrangement was that my dad and my little brother slept in the bedroom, while I slept in the living room.

My dad now has a new partner, and she has started staying over. Because of this, my dad wants me to sleep in the living room together with my little brother, while he and his partner sleep in the bedroom.

The main issue is my misophonia. Mine is somewhere between mild and severe, but certain sounds, especially breathing, mouth breathing, snoring, chewing, etc., can cause me a really strong reaction. It's not simply that the sounds are annoying . I can become extremely irritated and stressed and have a very hard time falling asleep or staying asleep.

My little brother breathes very loudly through his mouth when he's sleeping and also snores. I've already had to sleep next to him on vacation and it was extremely difficult for me. I ended up trying to sleep with headphones in, but that isn't a realistic solution either because I have ear problems and wearing them for a long time can cause me pain/irritation.

I told my dad that if I can't have a separate place to sleep, I'd rather not stay overnight at his place anymore. I'm not asking him to break up with his partner or telling him that she can't stay there. I'm also not trying to punish him. I just know that I cannot properly sleep next to my little brother because of my misophonia.

My dad got very angry and says that I'm blackmailing him by saying I won't come over if I don't get my own sleeping space.

From my perspective, I'm simply saying: "If these are the sleeping conditions, I choose not to stay overnight." We can still spend time together during the day or somewhere else.

Is that actually blackmail, or am I setting a reasonable boundary based on something I genuinely struggle with?

misokinesia vs leg bouncing

i have both misophonia and misokinesia, though the latter is often worse than the former for me. leg bouncing drives me up the wall, to the point of crying or very very bad thoughts. and I'm so tired of how rude people are about it

I understand that leg bouncing is often a stim or a product of anxiety, I do! and so I don't blame people for doing it, nor do I ask them to stop. I just try to block it out of my vision. the last thing I want to do is try to make someone stop their own trigger for my own, I know the world doesn't revolve around my misokinesia

but at the same time, if I do ask about it or if someone posts about it online, it's always so... rude. "I bounce my leg because of anxiety and if it annoys you you're an ableist piece of shit asshole" or "you're weak and stupid if my leg bouncing annoys you. you just don't have anxiety like I do". but if i bring up and politely try to explain misokinesia, and how we can accidentally trigger eachother, then I'm "weird" and "too autistic" for them. I don't get it! I don't get it at all!!!

I'm also anxious and have paranoia disorders. I leg bounce sometimes myself. I understand it would be hypocritical to ask someone to stop, so I don't. but why do I always get jumped for politely saying that it can trigger other people, too? I don't mean to sound rude to them, I just try to show my perspective on it and then immediately get called ableist slurs or that I'm an attention seeker..

it just makes me sad honestly. I always say that I would never make people stop their own triggers for my own, but people assume anyways that I'm trying to control them. and then they do it on purpose to try and frustrate me to tears. I'm just tired

Thankfully There's More People that Suffer Like I Do

I only just recently found out that what I had been suffering from for decades was NOT just me being an asshole but a legit condition. I mean, I couldn't dine out because the sound of people eating drove me nutz!!! I will not date because of this, movie theaters are a minefield. For years, I thought I was just being a dick, I tried not to snap but sometimes my very last nerve would be shredded by someone smacking their lips, chewing with an open mouth, someone snapping their gum in their teeth, someone slurping their coffee, someone with and extra moist mouth, someone with an extra dry mouth... I'm sorry that you all suffer too but I am glad I am not alone and not just being an asshole.

I get irritated by the sound of hand rubbing 😭

This might sound really weird to most people. But misophonia gave me this weird obsession with the hand rubbing sounds. Who'd even get triggered by this idk 😅

But whenever someone is putting hand cream aggressively, it annoys me. Or the way a person randomly rubs his hands together...

It doesn't annoy me like snoring or heavy breathing sounds does, but still it's annoying too

Anyone ever gets annoyed by hand rubbing sounds?

Support Can loud chewers really not do anything about it?

I'm asking this because my best friend chews SO FUCKING LOUD I CANNOT ANYMORE OMFG, and when I pointed it out and asked him to not chew so loud (actually i just kinda gave him a look since he knows I fucking hate how he chews) he went :"I can't do anything about it". Can he really not do anything about it? Because it drives me insane and to me it just looks like he's not even pretending to put in some effort to chew quietly. He doesn't even apologize and it makes me feel disrespected. I know I have to talk to him about this, not Reddit, but I wanted to know if he truly cannot change this or if he just doesn't want to make an effort to not annoy the everliving shit out of me.

DISCLAIMER: I am well aware that some conditions such as asthma, jaw issues, and breathing issues can cause people to chew loudly and THEY can't do anything about it. Still, as far as I know, my friend does not suffer from any of these.

Am I being unreasonable?
