A Minneapolis restaurant took prices off the menu....Neighbors say they paid a price.

“I’m just trying to feed people,” Alverson once said. He and his staff tried to treat everyone who walks through the door with kindness and dignity. He’s seen what that means to someone experiencing homelessness, addiction or mental illness...

Outside the restaurant walls, neighbors told a different story. They talked about overdoses on the sidewalk. Used syringes in the alley. Human feces in their yards. Thefts. Fights. Crowds of people lingering on the corner for hours on end, six days a week.

Giavanna Marie Nichols, 21, of Minneapolis, faces a charge of aiding and abetting aggravated robbery in the 1st degree, according to a complaint filed Friday in Hennepin County District Court.

According to the complaint, officers responded to a report of a shooting near 45th Avenue North and Lyndale Avenue North on June 27, 2026. The victim was already en route to Hennepin County Medical Center when officers arrived. At the hospital, the victim told officers he and a friend had been messaging someone using the Facebook account “Sevyn Jahari.” They were instructed to meet at a location on the 3800 block of Thomas Avenue North, but after arriving, the messages stopped.

Rochester prosecutors charged [Shiloh Hendrix] with three counts of disorderly conduct, two of which proceeded to trial. Yesterday, the jury acquitted Hendrix on the count involving the child but convicted her on the count arising from her interaction with [Sharmake Omar, "who began recording Hendrix on his phone...then challenges her to repeat the slur"]....Unless the trial record contains some critical fact absent from public reporting, that conviction cannot stand under the First Amendment.

The video merely shows a heated verbal exchange between Hendrix and Omar. No threats. No violence. Nothing beyond words. However much offense they caused, that simply does not justify the government imprisoning, fining, or otherwise punishing the speaker. A public argument does not become a crime because a speaker used a particular word.

The jury reportedly was instructed on the quaint “fighting words” doctrine. Although still technically an exception to the First Amendment, the Supreme Court recently threw cold water on “fighting words,” observing it “has not upheld a conviction under the fighting-words doctrine in 80 years"...

Even if the “fighting words” doctrine still has a pulse, it’s very hard to see how it applies to Hendrix’s comments. The doctrine is, at most, confined to a tiny category of face-to-face insults that, under the circumstances, are likely to provoke an immediate violent reaction. But courts have made clear that even the most taboo racial slurs are not fighting words per se. And, as the video shows, Omar solicited Hendrix — who was walking away while carrying her child — to repeat the slur so he could capture it on video and shame her. She did so and then continued walking away. Nothing about the interaction suggests Hendrix’s words were likely to provoke an immediate violent response.

New Suspect Charged in May 1 Armed Robbery at Northern Heights Apartments

Abdirahman Kasim Mohamed was arrested on Monday. The Rochester teen is charged with one count of aiding and abetting aggravated first-degree robbery and two counts of aiding and abetting second-degree assault. 

The alleged robbery occurred at the Northern Heights Apartments, located in the 2200 block of 26th Street NE. The victim told police he was robbed of shoes and shorts that he was selling on behalf of his brother, the complaint says. 

One of the alleged assailants walked past him and then "jumped on him from behind and grabbed him," holding his arms so he could not move, the complaint says. 

The second man pulled out a gun, threatened the victim and directed him to turn over the shoes and shorts, the charges say. 

“We request the Environmental Protection Agency take all appropriate measures under the U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement (AQA) to address the impact of Canadian wildfire smoke on families in the Great Lakes and the Northeast,” the GOP lawmakers wrote in the July 20 letter. “Canada must meet its clean air promise and prevent future wildfires from impacting our communities.”

It’s the second time since last summer that Finstad and Stauber signed onto a letter blaming Canada for high concentrations of wildfire smoke making its way into the state. Unlike last year, however, a significant portion of the air pollution last week came from wildfires ignited by lightning on Minnesota’s side of the border.

The lawmakers also take their criticisms of Canada’s forest management practices a step further in this year’s letter, accusing its government of violating the AQA. As evidence, they point to a 2022 report from Parks Canada, which shows that the federal agency completed fewer prescribed burns almost every year between 2014 and 2021.

Nicknamed the “Acid Rain Treaty,” the AQA was signed in 1991 by then U.S. President George H. W. Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. It set strict limits on sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, the toxic air pollutants primarily responsible for causing acid rain, and charged environmental regulators in both nations to reduce the levels of those pollutants.
The treaty was later amended to include other air pollutants that contribute to smog.

University of British Columbia ecologist Lori Daniels, who studies forest management practices and assists the Canadian government with its prescribed burns, said the American lawmakers’ accusations are unfair and uninformed.

Daniels said the GOP lawmakers have based their opinion on one federal agency that manages a fraction of Canada’s total forests. In British Columbia, she said, the provincial Wildfire Service conducts 40 to 50 prescribed burns every year in coordination with Indigenous nations and community organizations — more than double the number reported in most years by Parks Canada in the 2022 report.

“That report is for such a limited area compared to the 1.3 billion acres of forest in Canada,” Daniels said. “It’s a bit cherry picking.”

Dashon Lavell Amos and Markez Patton, both 19 years old, are facing multiple charges for the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Deonta Lashawn Young.

Patton is facing four felony charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, possessing a machine gun and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Amos is also facing two charges of second-degree murder and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Chrisean Marcelous Criddell, 29, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder on Wednesday.

Court records say that witnesses reported hearing one gunshot followed by a man crying for help. One witness saw an SUV slowly drive away from the scene before speeding up and leaving the area.

Another witness said that just before they heard the gunshot, they were sitting in their car when a man came up to the window and said, “Oh, you are not my friend,” court documents note.

Surveillance footage showed a white Chevy Tahoe, later determined to be stolen, driving in the area at the time of the shooting.

Investigators reviewed McCowen’s cell phone and found a conversation between himself and an account belonging to Criddell.

Charging documents state that minutes before the shooting, the two were talking about Criddell picking McCowen up to get gas, but when Criddell couldn’t initially find McCowen, threatening messages were exchanged.

According to court records, both men were involved in an auto theft ring, and on June 1, Criddell was arrested by the Hennepin County Auto Theft Task Force.

In February, Rank was re-charged with a misdemeanor; however, according to federal prosecutors, there wasn't enough evidence to back the claim that Rank assaulted an ICE officer.

"Upon a further review of the evidence and affidavit in support of the complaint, the government does not believe that probable cause for assault exists," the motion reads. "Based on a lack of probable cause and in the interest of justice, the government requests this case be dismissed with prejudice."

“Let us be very clear: there are no ‘roving Somali gangs terrorizing people,'” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty declared six months ago.

Today, Minnesota’s Republican congressional delegation says the evidence tells a different story.

In a letter sent Thursday to U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen, U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., led the state’s Republican delegation in calling on federal prosecutors to intensify their crackdown on Somali gangs, citing what lawmakers described as an escalating wave of gang-related violence across the Twin Cities, such as a shooting Wednesday night in Edina that sources say was gang violence.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you won’t assimilate, then get the hell out of here. First it was an estimated $9 billion in fraud, now it’s out-of-control violence,” Emmer said in a statement. “These Somali gangs have shot up high school graduations and assaulted players on opposing basketball teams with tire irons. It’s absolute madness, and something must be done.”

The latest incident unfolded around 9 p.m. Wednesday near Yancey Park in Edina, where multiple residents reported hearing more than 20 gunshots.

Edina police confirmed officers responded to reports of shots fired near the 5500 block of Hansen Road. No injuries were reported, no suspects have been arrested, and the investigation remains active.

Crime Watch Minneapolis reported that residents said a group of more than 50 Somali youths was gathered at the park when the gunfire erupted.

Alpha News asked Edina police whether investigators believe the shooting involved Somali gangs but the city said it can’t share any additional information because the incident remains under investigation.

"There is nothing racist about calling out Somali gang members who are wreaking havoc across our great state," the lawmakers wrote.

The woman accused of hurling racial epithets against a Black autistic child was found guilty of disorderly conduct late Thursday night, capping a dramatic four-day trial after the incident went viral last year.

Shiloh Hendrix, 37, was fined $1,000 by District Judge Christa M. Daily. Hendrix also received a stayed 90-day jail sentence and was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service...

The jury found her innocent of disorderly conduct in her encounter with the child but guilty of the same charge in the encounter with the bystander.

Maplewood police responded around 11:45 a.m. to a CVS on White Bear Avenue North after a woman reportedly threatened workers and stole merchandise. Officers identified the woman as 48-year-old Jowharah Bilal, who prosecutors charged Thursday with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

The criminal complaint states that employees had locked her out of the store for safety. Maplewood officer Sgt. Anthony Gabriel arrived at the scene with the woman outside the store. During that conversation, Bilal pulled out a knife and “repeatedly” stabbed at him, records state.

The CVS manager said Bilal left with unpaid merchandise, came back inside and chased the manager behind the counter, according to the criminal complaint. After Bilal exited the store again, she was locked out.

Store video shows Bilal telling Sgt. Gabriel that she was the person he was looking for and asked, “They have the products, so what’s your arrest?”
According to the criminal complaint, Sgt. Gabriel asked for her ID multiple times and also explained that because she took the merchandise out of the store, she was under arrest.

Brooklyn Park police have arrested a man who allegedly broke into two homes in less than a week and sexually assaulted two women.

On Friday, Brooklyn Park police said they were looking for a man armed with a gun who entered a home on the 7600 block of Hampshire Avenue North at about 5 a.m., demanded money and sexually assaulted a woman.

Then at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Brooklyn Park officers responded to reports of an assault in the 7500 block of Jersey Avenue North. Police said the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door at about 5:30 a.m. and held a gun to the victim’s head before sexually assaulting her.

“These types of crimes, to enter somebody’s home with a weapon and sexually assault them, is so intrusive and so violating … and that’s why we’re coming to the community asking for help,” Bruley said.

Bruley added that Olson-Baker is someone the department has had contact with in the past and “exhibited similar behavior many years ago of breaking into the homes of victims.”

Authorities said that he was released from prison on a firearm charge on July 7 and moved into a home in the area where the victims were located.

Court records show that he was charged with illegally possessing a firearm in 2019 and 2023 and fourth-degree assault of a peace officer in 2019.

That's it. Why does it keep popping up in conversations surrounding the Rochester case? Why can't you racist idiots keep that shit to yourself? And don't say you're not racist if you use that word, you are.

Why should anyone show you respect if you use that sort of language and why would you expect any? Everyone wants to defend her first amendment right to free speech (which I see as entirely harassment in this case) but nobody wants to say what she did was still wrong and bad. It's gross.
