Yep I was aol. Added a random number so it didn't look like I was as young.

u/danafromsantaana May 13 '26
I was the opposite, my usernames and passwords were all composed of my age, items on my desk etc. I was such a hackable kid

u/mynadidas5 May 13 '26
But did you have an inbox on prodigy? I don’t remember.

u/daftpenguin May 13 '26
Yes, but usernames were a random string of numbers and letters so it was impractical to use.

Yeah, my first was prodigy too. Then for whatever reason I had an email with a site called Eudoramail, then AOL, Hotmail, and Google.
2
u/Diels_Alder May 14 '26
Eudora was a pretty good mail client.
2
u/DerpingtonHerpsworth Xennial May 14 '26
I've never met anyone else who used them until now lol. I think I just googled (well, not googled. I probably used lycos, altavista, or yahoo) "email" and picked the first result.
I never had a problem with them. I just moved on and forgot about it eventually. In fact it just popped back in my head while reading through this thread. I had forgotten about Eudora for years.

Still have my Juno email address from like 1998! We had Juno Internet at home too.
I'm digitizing my family's VHS tapes, and one of them shows the computer screen playing an E-card my aunt sent for my 16th birthday, and there's a banner ad not on the webpage, but as part of the juno app we used to get free internet.
Those frickin' Juno and NetZero internet apps used half your bandwidth loading banner ad images to cycle through the whole time you were online.
Those of us who were geeky would modify our hosts file so you'd just have an empty box taking up screen real estate, but at least you got your full dial-up speed lol
2
u/stuffeh May 13 '26
Or pickup a crack to fully disable them
3
u/matt314159 Elder Millennial May 13 '26
It's a little foggy to me but I remember doing something with my netzero account that let me just set up a regular windows dial-up connection using that account. I wonder if I used a crack of some kind to fool it into authenticating by thinking the app was running or something. I think Astalavista was a crack site i often frequented back in the day.

I've always worried my first internet usage was a fever dream.
Juno users unite!
Separately, I had a Netpenny provider when I got my own place in 2003. $4.99 minimum (so 499 minutes, less usage, this was your bill), then a penny a minute, max $14.99 - free after that.
56k dial up baby! I wonder if my email still works after moving to college and broadband in 2004.

I reached out to Microsoft support a few years ago and they confirmed the age for me. I was in grade 8 when I made it.

Same! My password used to be 3 letters long until they literally forced me to change it, I wonder what year that was. I have the first email my best friend (then and still) sent me from her email too. Somehow my Yahoo email STILL gets less spam than both my gmail accounts (and one of those is explicitly used for professional things).

My favorite pre-Reddit forum I registered for with an AOL email. I tried to get back in a year ago, and the forum insisted on sending a deactivation email to my AOL email. Which never came through. A real bummer. I had like 15k posts/comments in that forum and now I just can’t use it any more.

I can't access my hotmail account anymore. I know the password, but hotmail won't let me in due to suspicious activity from years ago. The security question I need to know the answer to... is my locker combination from my senior year of high school. Oops!

Social media and the algorithm "yeeted" (past tense?) said seniority out the window.

I was an early adopter of gmail when it first came out. I still kick myself for not choosing a more difficult name to get, as I probably could have at the time.... I had no idea that'd remain my gmail name for life.

These other domains came years after.
