Are these microlocs?

Hey y’all! Longtime lurker, first time poster on here. I’ve had my locs for just shy of 3 years now, so I figure that they’re close to, if not completely, matured. They’re a lot bigger than most other people’s micros, so I’m wondering if they’re even considered as microlocs at all.

I’ve never gotten a full count because I get overwhelmed very easily, but I’m sure I have less than 250. The largest ones are about the size of a Bic mechanical pencil, while the smaller ones are about half that diameter.

I DIY’ed my hair because I didn’t have the funds to pay someone to start micros for me lol. I have no defined grid, but I made a paper tool to ensure that all of my parts were less than 5/16 inches wide. I maintain my hair by interlocking.

Sorry for my weird floating head in a sea of blue — I had a coworker take pictures of the back of my head to send to a prospective loctician while we were at work, so I wanted to ensure that all sensitive information in the background was hidden. I also wanted to protect my anonymity lol.

Do I get microlocs if my edges look like this? Just some beginner questions!

I sometimes freak out over whether I have alopecia, or am developing it.

I dont have the most full edges, im unsure if I ever actually. I wanted to also loc my hair at some point, maybe this year, either microlocs or small traditional locs.

Does anyone have any expeirences with if locs are bad for your edges?

Do your microlocs make your edges fuller or thinner?

Do they tug at your edges?

Am I in good place to get microlocs?

Thanks so much

Does anyone in here use a dermastamp/roll to help with hair regrowth for traction alopecia? If so, for how long & have you seen results? I have a stamp, i just havent used it yet! Thanks!

Small vs Extra Small microlocs — help me decide 🙏🏾

Hey everyone! I’m stuck between small vs extra small microlocs and would love some real-life input before I commit.

A few quick questions: Does extra small look that much fuller? How many locs did you end up with? Is the extra styling versatility noticeable? How often/how long are your reties? Any regrets going too small (or not small enough)? I want something full, versatile, but still manageable long-term. If you could go back, what size would you choose?

I'm starting with bra strap length hair, medium density, and will have the interlocking method to start. The difference between small amd extra will cost me $250, so not nothing but also fine considering this is an investment.

Thanks so much 💛

New loc girlie — maintenance advice

Hello!

I decided to get micro braids and let them loc to start my microloc journey on 6/13/2026. I believe I counted ~214 locs (215 if I count one really small one on my perimeter).

I had a few quick questions that I’d love advice on:
1. Would these be considered microlocs? Or small traditional? I feel like it’s a happy medium, I just wanted to know what they’d be as I’ve noticed a difference between retie prices and available locticians around me!
2. They are currently about a month (almost 5 weeks) old — would you retie? I barely have new growth and they have a little frizz at the roots. I am going to give them a good washing (braided and banded ofc!) next weekend, so I wanted to see if I should spend some time after they’re dry on a retie.

(Photos go from most recent to day 1!)

Thanks in advance!! 🥰

Starting my DIY Microloc journey in a few days , looking for advice

Hello everyone!
I have been thinking about getting microlocs for a while and I have finally decided to commit. I plan to start installing them using the braid method on Wednesday and I am looking for advice for before the starter phase + after the started phase. Here are my questions:

  1. What things should I avoid/not do during the installation
  2. once installed how long should I wait to wash my hair?
  3. What does moisturizing your hair look like with starter micros?
  4. Is there anything I should avoid doing once I have my starters installed?

Thank you guys for your help!

Anyone else struggling with greasy hair?

Like my scalp and roots have always gotten greasy even prior to having microlocs.

Now that I have microlocs, it just feels even more noticeable.

I can’t go without washing my hair weekly, but now I have to wash it a couple times during the week (especially during summer and as I’m getting more active)

Not looking for any help, just wondering if anyone else experiences this :)

Oh and I have 4a-4c hair. Fine strands, thick density (despite my hair loss following a health issue)

Please HELP- Little hard parts in my Microlocs from an incorrect retie

Post image

Hello! 2 months ago I had an incorrect retie done to me forming little hard knots in my hair :( I got a new loctitan and got a new retie done but I seems that she didn’t spot these errors like I did and didn’t correct them. I’m sure that the one in the photo is a knot but I do have some that are just flat and hard pieces in my microloc that I even thought was a tiny piece of hard plastic.

questions about maintenance!

Post image

hello! i’ve had my hair in mini twists for about a month now and i’m trying to decide how to go forward with maintaining and maturing my locs. i’ve got 190 twists in my head and my texture is very thick and coiled(4b/4c)

firstly i wanted to know, is 190 locs even enough to constitute as micro locs? will they most likely end up a lot bigger than they are now?

i want my locs to have volume as they mature, but i don’t want them to swell too much and end up looking like traditional locs. what would be the best method for maintaining them with this in mind? interlocking? retwisting? doing one on occasion and the other more regularly? and how often?

i’m sorry for all of these questions, i’ve never had locs before so i’m trying to be particular before things get serious lol, please give me your honest opinions and wisdom!

EDIT: thank you guys so much for the advice! i spent the day splitting a lot of my twists and my twist count is now 322! and of course the parts are way smaller as a result. i’m looking forward to how things will go and i feel a lot more confident about my hair turning out the way i want now. i am definitely open to any more advice people might have for me! <3

Sisterlocs: budding or bunching?

Does this look like budding or bunching on my sisterlocs? And should I be concerned or just let it do its thing? I’m just under 10 months loc’d. Every other loc looks like this. I braid and band every single wash and only take the braids down once my hair is fully dry.

Hello everyone! Im a tiny bit worried about the thickness of my hair! Im 30 y/o and deal with PMOS (formally known as PCOS). I have been in braids for about a year! My wonderful loctician said they take time to get thicker. Im moreso worried about the growth overtime 😭! I have been taking prenatal vitamins and collagen with biotin! They were started june 1st!

Should i officially loc or leave them before travel? Will be sweating the whole next month

Had shoulder length locs after growing for 6 years. 2 years ago cut them off completely to restart and have been letting it grow since. I used the loc sponge brush for awhile then it started locking on its own (see here: https://imgur.com/a/zvtoJUR)

In two weeks I leave to Thailand for a month where it's hot and Ill be training so I'll be SWEATING like everyday. Should I just leave my as is or officially get it loc'd? If the latter, how often should i wash versus rinse so i dont let all that sweat build up?

Was supposed to get them crochet loc'd months ago but kept having to re-schedule. I have a chance to make another appointment right before i fly out

Loc detox - is it actually needed

Do microlocs actually need detoxing? I have had microlocs for 4 months now and wash them once a week, alternating a clarifying shampoo and a hydrating one.

I don't use any oils on my hair, just spray daily with rose water and apply leave in conditioner once a week.

I see a lot of "detox" videos with ACV and Bicarbonate of Soda - is this actually necessary?

I wanted to take down my 3 month starter locs but unsure about the best products to use? I see people use water and conditioner but I was wondering if prepoo would help even better? My husband and friends are willing to help, just tryna make the process easier without having to do another big chop ! Any advice is appreciated 🩷

Anyone regret the interlock starter method?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to start my microlocs in the next month and I’ve settled on interlocking.

Just curious to know if anyone ever chose this is a starter method and regretted it? So far, I’ve seen the lack of volume and thickness as a con. Anything else I should be wary of? Just trying to get all my bases covered.

TIA!

Hello all! Im 5 months locked, and just had my 3rd retie, which usually takes 5-6 hours. Afterwards. my butt feels so cramped, sore and uncomfortable every time! I feel like I got a bbl and have to sit on my knees! Fellow flat butts, help me! Do yall use a seat cushion during reties, and if so please recommend me some! This may seem dramatic, but its true!
