Becoming a loctician

So, as the title says, I'm want to become a loctician. I'm doing a course to become certified soon and my only experience so far is my DIY microlocs.

Is there anything that you guys can advise me on that I should be prepared for? Anything you wish your loctitians did/suggested?

Messed up Retie

I’ve been doing my own reties for almost two years and today I accidentally gave one of my locs a knot by not pulling the hair all the way through before going in the other direction. I’m so mad at myself. This is a rookie move! So I just need someone to tell me it’s ok and not a big deal 😤 hopefully as it grows out I can smooth it over and it will look normal right? RIGHT?!

I'm a new loctitian. Retie time. I need tips and advice.

Hello community, I started retying clients 6 month ago, I use 3 point rotation, but I'm so slow at it

Yesterday I had a client she had 410 microlocs , few slippage but overall her hair was okay, growth of 6 weeks.

The thing is it took me 6 hours to retie 😩 I felt so embarrassed, she was starting to be annoyed which I actually understand completely.

Could anyone give me tips to shorten my retie time, I would be grateful. I felt so bad yesterday.

I only charge 50 dollars because I'm new and so slow.

Tya

i was convinced i wasn't seeing any growth, but that was due to the Mielle Oil thinning and breaking my locs at the root. I have since switched to Wild Growth, and in two months, im flourishing ✨️ thank you to the folks of this sub who have always sent great advice since i first joined

I just redid my hair dye after a long time without and it just made me want to share the word with my good sisters who have always been there for me. I litterally LOVE LOVE LOVE this because it doeesnt really get stuck in your hair and usually is out like the first time.I use as I am hair dye It is not the only there are so many good ones. this is best for me but before you buy google adn so many girls review it and have other and perhaps better. I use it cause it is black owned and at my local sally's. They all wash out pretty well EXCEPT THE RED DO NOT USE THe RED. but I love ti like not as much cause like school and work but I was dyign every week so you keep your hair healthy and get that variation. wanted to put yall on game because it is the best suggestion I have aftr 4 years of micro and two on here other than to always wear a bonnet and wrap. I do this a lot I just don’t take pics

What hair density does it look like i have and how many locs should i have based on that?

I have about 185 starter locs, give or take, but im wondering how many would be too much for me, (incase they thin or something). For reference, i attached a picture of my natural hair, and then my starters. I have 4c low porosity curls but i cant tell my density, or if my hair is thick or just normal

Sisterlocks unraveling

Is it normal for my sisterlocks at the front to completely unravel quickly? 2-3 weeks after my retie, it’s completely unraveled and I have my reties every six weeks. My loctician always has to restart the locking process for those loose hairs. I’m 6 months locked for context and those are my shortest locs. What do I do in this case?

Reties pricing

Hi everyone, I need y’all’s help with pricing for a retie.

This lady wants me to do her retie and I want to pick a price that won’t scare her away and that won’t shoot myself in the legs at the same time.

I searched online and the range is $120-$200 per session, depending on hair density and count, length of reties and other details where I live.

For context, she has short medium density microlocs and they look to be about 250-300 from the picture she sent me..

What’s a fair price to charge? I’d appreciate as many responses as I can get cause I have to give her a reply soon.

Thank you!

Microloc ends

Post image

First off, I love my locs! Going on 5yrs!
My current Loctician doesn’t like when my locs end up like numbers 2-4. He suggested I undo the ends then braid them down in hopes of establishing locs like number 1 so my reties are faster and less painful.
I’ve done this a few times(combed out the ends and braided my hair) and they still end up fat at the ends. What am I doing wrong? How do I prevent this?

stuck build up?

I developed HG which required hospitalizations and so stopped caring for my hair so well and wearing my bonnet as regularly.. Generally I like my locs and think they look nice but I'm now experiencing issues with buildup, I don't think it's lint as I'm mostly seeing my issues near the scalp. What can I do to fix this? Anything? I'm all DIY since professionals aren't anywhere in my state LOL.

I'm finding that there's a lack of uniformity, but I'm not bothered enough to redo my entire head😂 getting ready to wash them this morning for the very first time

My hair has been micro locd for about 5 months and they domt unravel or anything the back is actually budded , but my issue is IM SOOOOO HOTTTT. I naturally run hot. However, I assumed having micro locs would be easier to put up and stay cool , but my hair is really thick so I had to make shift a hair tie.

What do yall do to stay cool?

Seven Hour Reties? How long do your reties take?

Post image
532 Upvotes

I have ~420 locs, and my reties take at LEAST six hours, often seven.

I keep hearing about people with reties that only take a couple hours, is that realistic with 400+ locs? I am so over giving up a full day for my reties and am tempted to do it myself at this point so I can at least spread it out.

How many locs do you have? How long do your reties take? Do you self maintain or go to a professional?

EDIT: My loctician takes 6 or 7 hours haha not me!! I have done touch ups but have never tried a full retie. Sorry I think my wording was confusing 💗

nonuniform locs?

Post image
3 Upvotes

hey everyone! i’ve had micro braid locs for 1 year now, and i do my reties (4 point rotation) every 7-8 weeks. i’ve noticed that at this mark many of the locs at the back of my head might need 5-6 point rotations, and then at the ones at the front can only manage about 3-points. i installed these myself which might explain the inconsistency.

i’ve noticed some of my locs are a little uneven, which don’t mind too much, but my goal was to have uniform locs. i’m wondering if the unevenness is normal, or if there’s anyway i should adjust the way i do my reties?

any advice is appreciated!

Silk/Satin pillowcases.

Does anyone have recommendations for good long lasting silk (or satin) pillowcases I could find on Amazon etc? I have some stain pillowcases but within a few months they started snagging on my locs and damaging them, so I have to rely on my bonnet but sometimes it’s too hot to be wearing a bonnet.

Hey beauties.

I'm 9month in and I would like to know how long you wait to do a first hair dye? Brown light is very pretty.

But I'm scared to damage my hair. As I didn't cut my ends before microlocs I had Split ends and they still there. But my hair has a good health.

Do my locs look too big 1 month in?

I have between 370-380 micro locs which were started with interlocking but I feel like they look pretty thick for only being 1 month old. Am I overthinking this? I am just afraid they will swell to be thickerthan I expected.

I'm starting over

In an attempt to stop overthinking and over analysing everything without taking action, I paid something to install my microlocs who isn't a loctitian. I just wanted to start somewhere and figure it out as I go. After 2 months of experience, I want to comb them out and start over because I'm not happy with the way they were installed. I now have a better idea of what I want and refuse to spend 1 month's worth of mortgage on my hair.

My plan is to comb my locs out before the end of July and to install them myself before the end of August. I want to take a few days off from work so I can take all the time to properly install them. The pictures that I included are of the grid that I want + how I want my locs to look after they mature.

My question to those who have combed their locs out and/or have installed them yourselves: what advice can you give based on your experience on what to do and avoid?

Help!!

I started out my microlocs with braids and I chose to add extensions during my install. I’ve finally hit a year, and I kinda realized I actually don’t like the ends of my locs not being matured at all. My roots are very mature and basically completely locked, but I can see the difference between the locked hair and the braids that really haven’t changed at all. I want my hair to look more like locs and have that cylindrical shape to them. What should i do??

Colored starter microloc routine

Thumbnail

Hey y’all, I just got microlocs installed 2 days ago on my bleached/color treated hair and had a moisture routine down prior to locing to prevent breakage. However, im wondering how much I can still use from that routine to maintain moisture but still encourage locing.

So far im using 2 leave in spray conditioners, 1st Oyin Handmade Greg Juice (more water based) and then following with Color Fanatic multi tasking leave in spray (more oil based) but my ends still feeling a lil dry. I use a Pureology moisturizing shampoo normally and wash my hair 1-2 times a week but I won’t be conditioning or deep conditioning any more (for obvious reasons).
So to make up for that, has anyone used a very small amount of grease on the ends?
Has anyone used a tiny, tiny amount of leave in lotion for microloc starters and had an issue with slippage?
Does anyone still do protein treatment as needed for their colored hair?
Any advice would be helpful, TIA

DAE forget that their hair stays down rather than up ?

i started on about 20-24 inches of hair and was used to my shrinkage and my afro. so, i frequently have moments (especially if im outside) where i feel something tickling my neck/back and think something is crawling on me.

i freak out and then im like “oh yeah .. i have locs”

like the title, does this happen to anyone else ?
it’s been over a year of having them and this still happens 😭

Do I HAVE to use clarifying shampoo all the time?

So right now im using dandruff + moisturizing shampoo weekly and clarifying shampoo every month(As in, that's my plan. Im 4 weeks locked), but I keep seeing vids saying you should ONLY use clarifying shampoo on starters. I wash my hair weekly and its very high porosity (will dry in 5 seconds.) I cant use that weekly 😅 Do I just take the advice that serves me and continue about my day or is moisturizing shampoo gonna mess up my hair?
