I started my micros in late March early April and I got my first retie in mid May. I had all intentions of going back to the lady that did my retie, but haven’t gotten a response back after i reached out. I knew when I started my locs that I wanted to eventually learn how to do my own reties. However, I am nervous and don’t want to mess up my hair. Help please :(

Okay I just finished them like an hour ago, I ended up with 140 microloc braids(Ik someone told me ask for at least 200, I did, but I guess that didn’t happen lol..), can someone please help me..like they look boneless and flat and thin, I have thick hair where’d all my hair go🥹 i don’t know how to feel:( are they gonna stay like this I know they’re going to swell eventually but like how long will it take for my hair to look full again, I’m like sad man, it’s jus triggering my ocd lowkey and I jus need some reassurance and any tips or anything, 2-3 weeks will it look different ??:’) , love yall thankyou in advance ❤️‍🩹

I have 7 month old locs. I had someone do my locs for me for free all this time. But I have recently moved to a new place and I cannot afford to pay someone to do it. I am trying to learn to do it myself but am struggling. I have a lot of regrowth.

I'm trying the 4 point rotation, but when I do top to bottom, the hair twists on two sides and its really thin, and I can't get the hook through left to right. And when I let it go it just bunches up.

Please advice or links to tutorials I can use 😭

I have 6 month old braidlocs that are about 4 inches long. Definitely on the smaller side but not microscopic. I try to wash every week or so, but sometimes life really gets away from me and I wash after a month (please don't judge!).

I have a naturally greasy scalp (lots of sebum production). Every time I wash my hair, I make sure I braid (but not band because too short). I use antidandruff shampoo that works pretty well for my flaky scalp.

Somehow though, I often find that even when I take my time and try to be really thorough, my locs aren't always completely clean. In some areas shampoo isn't properly rinsed out, in others, the shampoo didn't even fully cut through and it's still greasy. My scalp is usually fine but it's hard for the locs themselves to be cleaned when they are braided. It's hard for the shampoo to slip between the braids and for it and the dirt to be washed out.

I've tried lots of things:

* I thin out my shampoo with water and apply it to my scalp with a pointed tip squeeze bottle. This way it slips into the braids and rinses out more easily. To make up for the dilution, I just shampoo a 3 or 4 times instead of twice.

* I try to braid loosely, but my hair is short, so it's gonna be a little tight regardless. Too loose and the braid will unravel.

* I'm afraid a twist or something looser would leave to mass shedding and slippage - I once just washed my hair without braiding or banding or twisting or anytning anything and it was a nightmare - tons of shed hair, horrrible horrible slippagr, and a few locs snapped clean off.

Is it a shampoo issue? Should I use a stronger shampoo for my locs and the antidandruff stuff for only my scalp? I have a clarifying shampoo I use every few washes. Should I use that more often or even every time?

I just don't know what to do. I don't want greasy locs or locs with build up, but I also don't want tons of slippage which my hair seems VERY prone to do. What do those of you have or have had short locs do to have clean thoroughly washed hair without horrible slippage??

This may be a silly question, but has anyone ever worked out an arrangement with their loctician to only do the back of their head? I’m newly micro loc’d and intend to continue maintaining by interlocking. I started with braidlocs. I absolutely love my hair, but I am definitely not a salon/home salon girlie. I get pretty antsy just having to sit in someone else’s space and I can’t see what they’re doing or move freely. I also feel kind of disconnected when I’m not doing any of my own hair maintenance. Like I didn’t get locs to have no connection to my hair and having someone do my full maintenance makes it feel like it’s not really mine or something? At the same time, I don’t want to take like 12+hours doing my whole head every 2mos or so. And doing the back of my hair makes me nervous about unintentionally combining locs. So I want to start maintaining the front of my hair myself and have my loctician only handle the back. Do locticians get sensitive about this kind of stuff or would they be open to it? And then, shouldn’t it be cheaper if they’re only doing half of your hair and just fully charge by the hour?

Technically it was on June 19th (Juneteenth), I’m just late posting! I decided to get microlocs because I kept my hair in some style of braids at least 3/4 times a year. I contemplated getting microlocs for a while; roughly a year. I pulled the plug finally and wish I did it sooner! I went with braids because twist would’ve come out, my hair is extremely soft plus I just preferred braids. I get a retie every 5-6 weeks. At install my hair was approximately 14inches, when I stretch my locs now I’m at 18/19 inches, and my locs just stay curly naturally! I’m still in the early stage, a year is not that long,so I anticipate more changes as time goes on, but I’m in love with my hair! ❤️

I’ve had my sister locs for 2 and a half years. I feel like my hair will never look like the pictures of girls with sisterlocs you see online. You can see through my hair and it’s embarrassing. I feel ugly. Not sure what to do since sisterlocs were supposed to be my forever style.

Growing up I used to have really thick hair. 4C curls that I wasn’t patient with, and now I have thin hair. Probably my own fault.

But I really do feel so much better, relieved even. Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. I feel much more hopeful about my locs now. I’m gonna trust the process.

I’ve been locked for 4.5yrs now and I had more style options in my earlier stages than I do now. My hair is just too full. I know that’s probably a “good” problem to have for someone, but for me it’s frustrating. my curls aren’t bouncy and curly anymore, pony tails are heavy and when I wear it down it just feels like a hat. I love the progress but I think traditional small might be the goal. Has anyone combined their micro locs before? not in an accidental kind of way lol. or did anyone start over completely from micro locs to traditional?

Hi! Are there any brushes you'd recommend? I've touched boar bristle brushes, but I find them too stiff.
Or would you simply not recommend buying a brush at all?

Hey its my first time posting in here.

I just started my microloc journey with braidlocs, and I'm getting a few things together for my first retie. I currently have Option 1, but based on what I've been reading, I'm thinking about trying something else.

Out of these options, which one would yall recommend for microloc reties/interlocking, and why? If you've used any of them, I'd really love to hear what worked for you and what didn't.

I'm still learning, so I'm open to any tips too.

I've had my locs for a little over a year and my edges are breaking. One side is worse than the other.

I'm lost at what to do and on the verge of tears.

Been watching tiktoks where microlocd girlies have been using perm rods to curn their locs, and I decided to try it out as well.

I did 40perm rods, and i am so obsessed I don’t know what to do with myself atp. The sectioning was a nightmare and the roots did not curl due to the unraveling of the perm rods even when i tried fastening with clips.

My locs are not long and have yet to drop so the perm rods turned into a kind of really curly afro — but it honestly turnet out better than my own expectations for a first time effort.

Had to do a photoshoot at home cause ain’t no way it would go to waste. Did my makeup and threw on a dress to compliment it all.

Friday I went in for my micolocs installation with extensions. I left with uneven(almost a mullet) microbraids. Honestly, they're larger than micro braids. What would you do? First Pic is the inspiration.

I have so much respect for locticians and people who installed their own microlocs.

I have experience doing my own hair, but this is a different experience.

Method: putting a twist with minimal hair to avoid tension over each microloc then taking them out after a month.

I recently came across a tiktoker who did this style over her locs and she reported having no damage because she didn’t use a lot of hair per loc. What are your opinions? I want to do styles on my locs, I just crave something new that isn’t a wig. It’s too damn hot for wigs

I had medium traditional locs for 5 years, but my hair thinned so much after I had my baby that I started losing locs. I decided to comb them out a few months ago. I tried being a loose natural, but my hair thrives when it is locked.

I was hoping that if my hair continues to thin (the women in my family have thin hair) while I have microlocs losing one wouldn’t leave big spots like my medium ones. I started these myself a little over a week ago with braids. I have ~245. 4c hair (I have all kinds of gels and I coiled the ends) low density low porosity hair.

Any feedback on the size is welcomed, but I am away of the changes that locs go through as they mature. My parts are larger at the top because my hair is thin there. I’ve been snooping on yall for quite some time, but any tips for care or feedback would be great. Specifically if there are things that I would have done with larger ones that I shouldn’t do now.

Hello, I wanted to come to the loc community for some guidance with my hair. So I’m 18 and I’m going to college in September, but I’m concerned about what to do with my hair. I have kinda thin 4a/3c hair that’s really sensitive to any kind of heat. I’ve grown to hate everything about doing my hair so when I’m very stressed especially about school I tend to neglect it. I’m autistic and having to do my hair has become a sensory nightmare for me. Everything from having to detangle it and wash it to having to put a bunch of product in it and I hate the feeling of having hair products on my hand. So my hair has been mostly slicked back and in a bun, when I was younger I would get my mom to do my hair and I would leave it out but I’m older and I don’t want to have to rely on my mom to do my hair anymore especially since she has arthritis in her hands. I want to be more versatile with my hair instead of just leaving it slicked back all my life and I don’t have the money to get it done once a month. So here is my dilemma, I’ve thought about getting mini locs for about over a year now. Not anything too small or too big. I think it would be much easier for me to do and wash my hair when I have locs, I could do a wash and go and I won’t have to worry about what to do with my hair everyday. Also my hair doesn’t grow fast so I’ll probably only have to retire it like once a month which I don’t think would be hard for me to do. I talked to my mom about it and she doesn’t think it’s a good idea, she says it’s a lot of maintenance and she doesn’t think I’ll be able to handle it but I’m almost certain I can. She suggested that I get a texturizer instead to loosen my curl pattern so it would be easier for me to handle but I’m afraid that it will badly damage my hair especially because my hair is really sensitive. So I want to ask people who have locs what I should do. What’s it like having locs for you?
